Nikon D40x LCD monitor...?

Q. I just bought a Nikon D40 camera, and I can't see anything in the monitor while I'm taking pictures. The camera works just fine, and I can see the pictures I took on the screen on playback mode, but while I take pictures, the screen is black. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but is that normal? If not, what can I do to fix it?

A. You are now using a real camera, not a point and shoot. You do not use the monitor to take photos. The camera cannot do that. You use the viewfinder. There are some DSLRs that now have "live view" in which you can see the image in the monitor to take the photo, but it is, in my opinion, a gimmick to cater to those who are used to point and shoots.

Holding a camera out and moving it around looking at a monitor is NO way to take photos, not with a point and shoot, and most definitely not with a DSLR.

WHAT... there is ANOTHER Steve P on here? I did not think YaHoo would allow two identical user names?

Is there some sort of Vari-Angle LCD monitor attachment that I can get for my DSLR camera?
Q. I have a DSLR Nikon D3100. The monitor does not flip out or up and down, and i was wondering if there is some type of Vari-Angle monitor attachment thing i could get for my camera, so I would be able to take pictures or film videos in front of the camera with me actually being able to see myself in the monitor.

A. On-camera monitors are common.

Can LCD Monitor on Canon ESO 20D can be used as a Viewfinder?

Q. I did not see it in a Manuel and it is very hard to take photo through the little viewfinder eyepiece.

A. Live view on dSLR's is a relatively new thing that did not show up until about 2008 or 2009 on some dSLR's but NOT all.

The Canon EOS 50D was the first of that series to have live view. 40D or older do not have that feature

As far as using the viewfinder, photographers have been using them for over 50 years without a problem. You may have to refine your shooting skills to make using it more intuitive

What is the best DSLR camera I can get for under £400?
Q.

A. I would suggestion these are good quality dSLR cameras and inexpensive :

Nikon D3000 : 10.2MP, 3 inch hi-res LCD monitor, New Guide Mode for easy operation and enhanced picture taking skills, 11-point autofocus system for tack sharp results, Active D-lighting for shooting in high contrast conditions, etc.

Canon EOS 1000D : 10.1MP, 2.5-inch LCD monitor and Live View mode and EOS Integrated Cleaning System, ultra-light 10 MP digital SLR camera with 7-point wide-area AF system, Up to 3 frames per second continuous shooting, etc.

what is the "live view" feature in modern dslr cameras?

Q. apparently the new flagship sony alpha900 does not have it, thanks

A. Live view is the ability to use the LCD monitor to compose your shot. Many first time DSLR users ask for this feature. Many experienced DSLR users poo-poo this feature, but they are wrong.

Live View is not so different from a view camera from 100 years ago. There are times when Live View can be quite helpful. I use it most for shooting over the heads of people in a crowd: http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/2819873511/ This is not a great shot, but I don't have anything better available on-line right now. Some subjects also benefit from a higher-than-normal view and Live View is of value there.

Okay, this is not exactly wedding photography, but look at this sample, taken from the audience of a children's pageant: http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/3097070087/ Lovely view of the back of some guys' heads. Using Live View from the same vantage point< I was able to capture the entire stage area: http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/3097070135/ which resulted in this cute shot of a shild who needed some extra prompting from the teacher: http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/3097070247/ Chances are, I would not have gotten this shot without Live View.

You can also use Live View when you want a low point of view without getting down on the floor to get it. I used live view here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/3091871958/ It was helpful, because I could talk to the cat and divert her attention so she was looking up at me and away from the camera. This is not a "serious" use, perhaps, but there are similar applications that you could easily think of.

I took this with a D200 that does not have Live View. http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/2311445874/ I did it by holding the camera down almost on the ground and repeatedly taking the shot until I got what I wanted. Even if I chose to lay down on the ground, I don't think I could have gotten my eye low enough to properly view the image in the viewfinder. With Live View, I could have at least come close the first time.

It can be helpful for macro shots. I took this with Live View on the D300: http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/2526886848/ In spite of the comment about poor image quality in the LCD, the D300 has almost a full megapixel resolution in the LCD. You can zoom in for critical focus using Live View. I don't care who you are, nobody is going to get better focus than that using your eye in an unmagnified optical viewfinder.

As far as the pop-up flash, mentioned in another answer, I think pro-level cameras should have a pop-up or SOME light that is capable of triggering off-camera strobes. Why not? I find that the pop-up is quite useful as fill flash if I dial it back a few stops, so I don't know why a pro should be saddled with a huge flash for every single job when just a little fill flash would suffice. It's not a bad idea, in my opinion.

Shot with the pop-up for fill flash:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/3061999053
http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/2705802642
The sun was a a low angle for both of these shots and the fill flash was very helpful in reducing shadows on the subjects' faces.

What brand is the best when it comes to cameras?

Q. Canon or Nikon? And what's the difference between dslr/slr/hdslr? Can you please tell me what camera is the best when taking pics from afar?

A. Both cameras which you have mentioned are good. But I recommend you Cannon T3i concerning its affordable price and high image quality as it has 18.0 MP CMOS sensor and DIGIC 4 Image Processor and speed with enhanced video shooting options.
Here is what professionals say about this camera, i hope it helps your decision:

http://www.amazon.com/review/R20WM9N74Y83IH/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B004J3V90Y&linkCode=&nodeID=&tag=arfdwh-20

Pictures taken from canon cameras are much brighter and with true colors as compared to Nikon and if you are a beginner you may chose it because its not much costly plus user friendly.
T3i has a feature of ISO 100 - 6400 for shooting from bright to dim light.
It also has a Vari-angle 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor (3:2) for shooting at high or low angles and 1,040,000-dot VGA with reflection reduction
T3i has a great feature of Live view which is very much helpful in shooting videos.

How do you make the picture that you take appear on your monitor after you take it with the Nikon d3000?
Q. I have a Nikon d3000 and I need to know how to see your picture after you take instantly on your monitor.

A. If by "monitor" you mean the LCD on your camera, look on page 118 of your user manual and follow the instructions under the heading "Image Review"

If you are asking if you can link the camera to your computer, you cannot. Tethering is not an option on most entry level dSLR's

How to get rid of the dust under the screen?

Q. My DSLR has white dust under its LCD monitor. I can only see it when the screen/camera is off. I keep it in a camera bag, its dust free in there and its actually getting worse. The dust doesn't bother me as I don't even see it when the camera is on or in any of the photos I just hope its not damaging the camera?

A. White dust under the LCD monitor. Oil marks / fingerprints under the LCD monitor etc. are recently becoming quite common especially in DSLR's. They are obviously irritating but it's better to forget them. Since they don't interfere with the photos and are not so obvious when the LCD is being used, it's easier to learn to ignore them then getting it cleaned.

Opening a DSLR is a tough job and even after cleaning, it might not be very clean. However you might end up getting new problems. It's not worth getting the screen cleaned. Better learn to live with it and ignore it.

Take your camera out, start photographing and soon you'll start to ignore this.

Second- even if your camera bag appears dust free, use a vacuum cleaner to clean it up further. Use a LCD cover slightly bigger in size than the LCD screen. It also sometimes helps by preventing dust from entering behind the LCD screen.

Most of such problems are however related to the assembling of the camera and I feel that the people there are quite irresponsible.

i need a SLR digital camera that i can shoot a subject while viewing it on the LCD monitor?
Q. i need a SLR digital camera that i can shoot a subject while viewing it on the LCD monitor. can you suggest me some manufacturer and models?

A. Hi,

The Sony Alpha series has this. Canon and Nikon need to flip the mirror up to refocus, so the screen goes blank for a short time. Sony uses a second sensor to focus - so you can view all the time.

You should ask yourself why you want this though. Live view is good for composition and getting horizons horizontal, but DSLR's are heavy, and holding it to your eye/face makes sure it is steady. That's why so many amateur videos look as if they were made by a drunk - it is just too difficult to hold at arms length.

Cheers

how to i let monitor screen to show on dslr camera?

Q. how to i let monitor screen to show on dslr camera?

When I am trying to take pictures, LCD monitor screen doesnt show so I have to use the viewfinder eyepiece. i have canon rebel xti dslr camera

can you help please

A. Read the manual. If it does not say anything about LiveView, it wouldn't be possible to use the rear LCD as a viewfinder on your camera. Your only choice is to use the tiny optical viewfinder, the way lots of great pictures were taken decades back during the film era.

what is a good dslr camera that has video?
Q. I'm looking for a DSLR camera that has video, I was looking into the Nikon D3100 or the Canon T3i BUT I like how the T3i Has the flip part of the camera so you can see your self while recording. (from my research I saw that the D3100 doesn't have that) I'm not sure if anyone knows of any that are better, that won't cost an arm and a leg. My budget is approx $800

As of right now I have the Nikon D3000 but.... I decided on selling it so I can upgrade, I want a camera that is good for photography and videos..... Help please?

A. By keeping in view your requirements and your mentioned budget, i would recommend you the Nikon D5100. It has advanced features then the Canon T3i. The D5100 has a slight edge
(0.6 f-stops) in low noise, high ISO performance (1183 ISO). D5100 has Significantly better image quality (80.0) and has a 13 EV dynamic range. D5100 also Distinguishes 1.4 more bits of color
D5100's movies are look great, with smooth motion and impressively low noise in dim light. It has In camera HDR which Combines multiple exposures to capture high dynamic range. D5100 has APS-C 23.6x15.6mm sensor, which is much larger than T3i. It has 3x less delay when turning on. It has contrast detection video autofocus which automatically focuses video shooting. The D5100's boost ISO is 1 f-stop better (25600 ISO) and has 11 focus points which Set focus accurately within the frame. the following link will help you to decide about this camera.

http://www.amazon.com/review/R1KCF39XVQCDBJ/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B004V4IWHY&linkCode=&nodeID=&tag=tawerh-20

It has 3-inch, 921,000-dot Super-Density horizontal type Vari-Angle LCD Monitor. It has In-camera Special Effects Mode, n-camera HDR (High Dynamic Range), Stunning Full 1080p HD and Movies with Full Time Autofocus. ISO Sensitivity: 100-6400 (Extended Mode: 100-25600)

What are some versatile, high-end cameras good for both still and video use?

Q. I haven't used a DSLR before, but since I'm a fast learner and since I need a camera that is versatile enough to capture excellent photos as well as record sharp video, I'm considering investing in one. I have also heard of Sony's SLTs as versatile, as well. Thoughts, suggestions? Thanks.

A. I would suggest you the NIKON D5100, because it has excellent result for both pictures and videos. Judged on its own merits the D5100 is a great camera, but we're concerned that an enthusiastic beginner might outgrow it faster than some of the competition. Image quality is definitely the D5100's trump card. It offers effectively the same image quality as the higher-end D7000, at a lower cost. D5100 has normal interface, but with plenty of manual control. The D5100's movies are look great, with smooth motion and impressively low noise in dim light. At low ISO settings, the D5100 is on a par with the best of the competition, but at the higher ISO settings, it produces some of the best image quality that we've ever seen from an APS-C camera. The following link will give you the more detailed information and reviews of professionals about this camera

http://www.amazon.com/review/R1KCF39XVQCDBJ/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B004V4IWHY&linkCode=&nodeID=&tag=tawerh-20

D5100 has 3-inch, 921,000-dot Super-Density horizontal type Vari-Angle LCD Monitor. In-camera Special Effects Mode, 1 Yr Camera / 5 Yrs Lens. In-camera HDR (High Dynamic Range). It has
stunning Full 1080p HD Movies with Full Time auto focus with ISO Sensitivity: 100-6400 (Extended Mode: 100-25600).

Which brand is the best among the best for dslr camera?
Q. well, like the question said.. among nikon, sony and canon which one is the best dslr camera for a beginner like me? and how much does it cost in Ringgit Malaysia?

A. For perfect photos, fast and simple, there's nothing better than Canon's EOS Rebel XS. With powerful features including a 10.1-megapixel CMOS sensor, Canon's DIGIC III processor, fast shooting and more, it's a digital powerhouse. With simple, easy-to-use controls, a compact design, a 2.5-inch LCD monitor, and Live View Function, it's a beginner's dream come true.

Can you buy the LCD monitor that comes with a camcorder and attach it to a point and shoot camera?
Q. I have a canon point and shoot camera and I film videos. Since I can't see myself in the screen it's hard to see if the camera is focused and pointed in the right place. I'd rather not buy a camcorder and the other canon dslr cameras are very expensive. Please help if you have any ideas or if they sell the screens? Thanks

A. most point and shoot cameras have an AV output so you can watch on TV set. assuming you do have this output, they do make LCD monitor screens but you would find them expensive.
