Whats the best flat screen 1080p monitor I can buy for under 300$?

Q. My room mate has an Acer P243W and it look freaking amazing! I want one equal or better than his. Anybody have any recommendations? Or should I just buy the Acer P243W? (It needs to have an HDMI input too.)

lcd monitor turn on only 5 sec?

A. It's shot (bang bang) and dead. I'm assuming the power is going right back off after 5 seconds, which I'm further rubbing my magic 8 ball to means something in the secondary supply bus is pulling too much current the second it tries to illuminate the lcd xy boards.

Of course, when people give super generic questions, it makes it completely impossible for even the smartest people to answer them.

Off hand, go ahead and do one of the following 3:

if it's under 32" and out of warranty chuck it and buy a new one
if it's under 32" and in warranty, take it back to the store, and plan on buying a new lcd if they won't exchange it on the spot (no one repairs smaller lcd's these days -- which means it'll sit around somewhere on a shelf until the powers that be see fit to issue a credit for a new lcd)
if it's bigger (vastly bigger) and out of warranty you might wanna call some local tv shops, repairs can run from around 300-1600$++, which is why i'm leaning towards chuck it and buy another one.
Next time, buy an extended warranty also, as lcd's do die a lot more often than classical tube-tvs with a cathode.

I would get the LCD off of Craigslist,amazon,or a local chainstore. Most likely off of amazon or craigslist

And the Projector off Craigslist or Ebay.

I would be useing One of the 2 depending on what i get for Computer games and Internet,Xbox 360,and as a TV that I would use often everyday. Lets say 12 hours a day to be on the safe side. Best monitor under $300?

Q. I'm looking to buy a decent monitor (19" or lrgr) with a budget of $300 max. I would prefer a monitor that's ideal for video playing. I'm not a gamer, so that's not a priority. Any help or feedback would be helpful. Thanks!!!

Bought mine from OfficeMax.com for $299. It's currently $399 but they go on sale about every two weeks.

I've had mine for over 2 months and I am happy with it. It doesn't have the best aesthetics (shell not as pretty as Sony, Samsung, Dell, Gateway LCD monitors we have at work) but the LCD panel is just as good as the higher end ones. I think the SOYO is better than the digital Samsung and Dell panels I use at work. Much more brighter.

As with all things, look past the logos and labels and focus on the specifications and materials.

Also, I've hooked up my Xbox 360 to it (VGA connector) and it works really nice...great color and contrast.

Best value for your $300 if you can get one locally or off the Net.

If I weren't going to to have to explain the purchase of a Playstation 3, I would spend that extra money on a Gateway 24 LCD (more inputs) but, then, you're talking about a monitor that'll be double what the SOYO is with the same display specs.

Can I use my digital camcorder to get high resolution video on my pc?

Q. I have a Sony Digital Camcorder Model DCR-TRV340. If I save video on the memory stick you can only have 300 by 200 resolution. Is there anyway to record video with the regular tape and then transfer it to a pc with higher resolution?

A. Yes, if your computer has a firewire port or an available expansion slot so you can add one.

The Sony DCR-TRV340 is a Digital8 camcorder and has a DV port. DV, i.LINK, IEEE1394 and firewire are all the same thing. The DV format video is high quality, standard definition, video. USB won't work and USB to firewire cable/converter things won't work. USB is used for transferring stills from the memory stick.

Download the operating instructions. See page 191 for details on i.LINK. See page 206 for the location of the "DV in/out" port (next to the USB port under the flap on the left side of the camcorder).

Cool camcorder... AV-in (most camcorders no longer have this), LANC (for a wire remote - keeps shake to a minimum when using a tripod - or if you mount the camera to a crane and you can zoom or focus or even take a still without touching the camera - and better than the wireless remote because you do not have to be in front of the camcorder to use the LANC), mic input, NightShot (infrared emitter built-in for zero light video capture), viewfinder and LCD panel, headphone jack for monitoring audio being recorded, a focus ring for manual focus control, interval recording for time lapse stills...

When the camcorder is correctly connected to the computer with a firewire cable, and the camcorder is in "Play/Edit" mode (on the power switch), Launch MovieMaker and "Capture" the video. Sometimes MovieMaker throws up for some reason - try WinDV (free download and use - no watermarks) for the transfer, then drag the transferred file to the Capture Area in MovieMaker... then drag to the timeline and edit...

Q. I purchased the tv from Best Buy yesterday with the Blu-Ray player and they told me for the BestBuy tech team to calibrate it would cost me another $300! Wondering if anyone has the same tv who has had this calibrated by them or found the ideal calibration setting online?

A. Most of today�s better quality modern fixed-pixel displays, such as Samsung�s HD TVs, have specific modes and/or settings that provide (very) good gray-scale and CIE �D65� color performance out of the box, better than the displays manufacturer�s offered to consumers not too long ago. The optimal settings will always vary from one display to another and will equally vary depending on your viewing environment; the best you will be able to do without using measurement equipment is to get your settings �into the ballpark.�

When it comes to normal color vision, unless you have some sort of side-by-side visual reference for color accuracy, such as a high quality, professionally calibrated display or a calibrated (color critical) �reference grade� professional monitor, then, like the vast majority of people, it is very difficult for an average observer to tell if the color or white balance is incorrect. This is particularly true if you take a little time to optimize your display settings for your specific viewing conditions.

The ultimate solution would be a professional calibration of your display; however this is frequently beyond the need and/or budget of the substantial majority of consumers, particularly if one�s viewing habit is more casual than critical. (Should you ever decide that you need or want a �professional� calibration, rather than utilizing Best Buy�s Geek Squad service, I believe you would be better served by hiring a knowledgeable, independent, professional calibration expert that has abundant experience; I�ve provided a few links below.)

One cost-effective alternative to a professional calibration is to purchase your own colorimeter, such as the inexpensive models (often less than the cost of a typical professional calibration,) from GretagMacbeth, Datacolor, etc., and learn to calibrate your own display(s).

Regardless, you should rent or purchase one of the display optimization (aka �calibration�) DVDs such as �Avia� from Ovation Multimedia or �Digital Video Essentials� from Joe Kane Productions to properly optimize and maintain your display.

Below I�ve provided the majority of the picture settings needed for the do-it-yourselfer to get the picture fidelity for Samsung�s 6xF Series of LCD HDTVs (including your Samsung LN-T4066F display) in the ballpark. These settings should be used for ALL viewing particularly if color accuracy is valued.

Using either HDMI or analog component video inputs...

First, in the Picture menu set your Samsung display to �Movie� mode. Again, you should use this �Automatic Picture Setting� for all viewing.

The backlight setting should be preferably set to 0�, and no higher than 4. This is essential if you wish to maximize the contrast ratio of your display.

Aside from using either of the recommended display optimization DVDs try the following picture settings.

   � Contrast: 85-95
   � Brightness: 45-55
   � Sharpness: 0-20
   � Color: 50-55
   � Tint: 0

Detailed Settings Menu
   � Black Adjust: Off
   � Dynamic Contrast: Off
   � Gamma: between 1 and -3 (Note: the MEASURED gamma value for a �Rec.709� compliant HD display should be as close as possible to 2.5)
   � Color Space: Auto
   � White Balance: (It�s probably best if you leave these settings in their default, centered position unless you have access to a measurement instrument to assist you in setting the proper white balance.)
   � My Color Control: All should be set to the default of 15
   � Edge Enhancement: On (only if Sharpness is kept to an absolute minimum of 20 or less, otherwise set to Off)
   � xvYCC: Off
   � Film Mode: On (for 480i film-based sources only)
   � Game mode: Off
   � Energy Saving: Off

   � Color Tone should be set to �Warm2�
   � Digital NR should be set to �Off�

Active Color and DNIe are not available in Movie Mode.

Under Screen Size the �aspect ratio control� should always be set to �Just Scan�
