Question about Monitors?

Q. So i've been looking around for the best monitor to buy for my pc i know tons about computers etc but i know nothing about monitors, but i've nailed it down to two monitors left either the Acer S243HL 24 > http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009206 or the HP 2510i http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en/ho/WF06b/382087-382087-3284302-215012-215012-3757979-4128855.html

So my question is based on peoples knowledge of monitors which is the better one to buy ( money isnt a problem ) i want to know which specs better which one has a better picture etc based on reviews knowledge and if you have one of these tell me how good you'd rate it

Most helpful answer wins thank you.

A. Manufacturers tend to exaggerate the contrast ratio of the LCD panel in order to suck consumers into purchasing it, but in reality you cannot really see the difference between say, a 10,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio between a 20,000:1 DFC (even though the numbers seem to suggest a significant difference)

There are currently 2 types of LCD screens -- CCFL and LED backlit ones.

CCFL is the most commonly used backlighting tech, which is just cold cathode light tubes

LED backlit panels are less common, but have the benefit of brighter displays, better contrast ratios, use less power but they cost a little more compared to normal CCFL panels.
There's probably a $30~40 difference between the 2.

The other spec you look at is the response rate. Most monitors have a 5 millisecond response (5ms) but some higher end ones are rated at 2ms.

However you will also see a specification along the lines of "2ms GTG" which means "grey to grey"
These are not true 2ms panels -- it just means if a pixel is grey it takes it 2ms to change to a different color and then back to grey. So thus -- it's a 2ms display that most of the time that only does 5ms.

The response rate of the monitor is only important to FPS gamers and people who watch sports on their screen -- but in typical usage you never really notice 2ms vs 5ms.

In terms of LCD display quality, you have to look at who manufactures the LCD panel. Acer for example, does not produce LCD panels, but they actually use LG branded panels but produce their own electronics.
Samsung arguably comes up with the best panels in the market, so if you want a good quality monitor, just buy a Samsung brand.

23 inch, 2ms response, LED backlit $219 (I recommend this monitor)

24 inch, 5ms response, CCFL backlit $229

which is better LCD or TFT monitor???
Q.

A. The term TFT and LCD has been loosely used.
TFT stands for Thin-Flim-Transistor and LCD, Liquid Crystal Display. They are entirely 2 different items. TFT is used to control the LCD in the display panel and for this kind of display, we call it TFT-LCD, which we see LCD TVs and LCD Monitors. TFT-LCD are called active matrix LCD http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TFT_LCD

Passive matrix LCD are those used in calculators, watches and older monochrome monitors and older laptop screens. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_crystal_display

We could have different types of TFT-LCD panels with different construction technology. http://www.pchardwarehelp.com/guides/lcd-panel-types.php. S-IPS has been considered to be a better panel.

15 inch LCD for text or 17 inch LCD Monitor?

Q.

A. Get a 17" or 19" you will find you can pick up a descent 19" for about £100.
If your using it to view text files you dont want any smaller than a 17" because it can be awkward to read on otherwise.

Also should you want it for other things a 19" would come in very useful should you use for other purposes.

LCD monitor or tv for computer movie viewing?
Q. I am in the process of upgrading my year old computer. I do a lot of online work, so having a 2nd monitor is my top priority upgrade. I sit about 2 feet away from my computer.

Primarily, it will be used to watch tv shows and movies. My current monitor is 720 (I found out) but have to minimize the video playback so I can get as much work done without the video covering up parts of the screen. Secondary usage, though minor, would be a secondary details monitor that might be used to display a webpage I need certain information from, or an excel page I can quickly look at values. I have no problem making the text bigger or smaller for this usage, so I want something that will play movies and tv shows as best as I can.

As far as research I've been doing I'll want a 1080 monitor. By years ends I'll be wanting to buy blue ray player or something for my computer and start watching those discs for the best possible quality of the stuff I watch more than once. So, here are my options I'm thinking of:

24" 1080 monitor for under $200. Viewing a size to distance ratio chart, 24" appears to be the best size for my distance away from viewing movies at that resolution.

27" 1080 monitor for about $300. This is a "play" related monitor while working, so something nice and big would make the boring online work more enjoyable. And if by chance I decide just to have a movie viewing marathon while ignoring work, the bigger the better?

LCD tvs just appear to be cheaper. And if It's going to be used to watch movies like 95% of the time, seems like a good choice when I can adjust settings for when not used as a tv. So, if I can get the same size for cheaper, that would be good, but heck, I wouldn't mind saving up a few more weeks for something really nice.

So, is there any drawback for using an lcd tv instead of a monitor (assuming it has proper computer connections)?

A. as yet i have not found a TV that makes a good monitor
colour tints
as monitor are cheapish
get 2 x 24" monitors
1 can be 1920 x 1200 /16:10 display as this is better for web browsing
2 can be 1920 x 1080 /16:9 which is what most films are broadcast in
and if you have films on your hard-drive they can easily be put on the second monitor
a tv tuner will give you the tv is required

LCD Monitor calibration?

Q. Does anyone know a really god place or downloadable software i can use to calibrate this new alienware 1080p native resolution monitor?

A. You really need hardware to properly calibrate a monitor. Something like Spyder:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/ColorVision-S3X100-Spyder3Express-PC-MAC/dp/B002OCF57K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1294076210&sr=8-2
or Pantone Huey:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pantone-MEU101-Huey/dp/B000CR78C4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1294076283&sr=8-2

They'd have you think that recalibration is necessary frequently, but for all but the most demanding uses (e.g. professional photography, in which case you need to consider your room environment and ambient lighting too), you probably just need a profile (.icm or .icc file). You could just borrow such a device if you can find someone who has one.

Having said that, Widows 7 does have some built-in calibration capabilities: see Control Panel, Appearance and Personalization, Display, Calibrate color.

Windows (all versions) comes with a variety of colour profiles, one of which may well improve your monitor display. Some LCD monitors have very strong saturation. Profiles are in C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color and WideGamutRGB.icc may be helpful for you.

See "To enable or disable calibration loading by Windows" in http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-color-management-settings for how to apply colour profiles and calibrate colour in general.

Monitor for Photography Viewsonic VP2650wb?
Q. I've been researching through high end professional color monitors for photography and this is my first time in this class. The question is: has anybody bought one of these and what are the results?
If not good can you give me other model and brand

A. CRT monitors are still the choice for accurate calibration of image files. There are a few LCD's that have a sRGB mode that can be used with some level of success if you are providing images for prints or posting on the Internet.

There is yet to be an LCD monitor that is calibrated for Adobe RGB for those who shoot for publications.

Here is a link that can help you. http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/

You will also find that a calibration device like the EyeOne2 or Spyder will be important if you want to make changes in image file contrast or colour accurately

Picking best resolution for LCD widescreen monitor?

Q. I just brought a new LCD monitor. On the box it says that the resolution it's built for is 1680 x 1050. However, my graphic card/driver is a bit dated and only offers the following resolutions:

800x600,
1024 x 768,
1152 x 864,
1280 x 720,
1280 x 768,
1280 x 960,
1280 x 1024,
1400 x 1050,
1600 x 900

It's a 22" monitor. I know I probably shouldn't pick the lowest resolution (800x600) but I don't know which of the rest I should pick seeing as how my graphics card doesn't seem to support the exact resolution that the monitor calls for.

Furthermore, barring the driver being updated to include that, should I buy a new video card? How much better does it make the image? I use the computer for CGI a lot, but gaming, not so much.

A. Your monitors suggested res gives a 1:1.6 aspect ratio, which is standard widescreen. The 1280 x 768 gives a
1:1.66 ratio which is the closest. You might also try to make sure you have the latest driver for your vid card. If you can get the suggested resolution your display will be sharper, and for me anyway what matters is that widescreen movies properly fit the screen. That doesn't matter so much any more because so many movies are coming out in even wider display resolutions so they still have bars across the top and bottom of the screen. I would try to take whatever application you will be using your monitor into the store where they haveone set up with the correct resolution and see if it makes that much difference in the quality. If it is worth the $90 bucks or so to you go ahead and buy a new card.
Best Wishes
Randy J.

Recommend for a 20" widescreen LCD monitor?
Q. Hi, could anyone recommend me a good quality 20" widescreen LCD monitor? My budget is around $250. Thanks.

A. For a lcd monitor, the respond time( 2ms or 5ms or...) lower is better and the contrast of the monitor. recommened a least 1000:1 or higher.

The monitor is from amazon and the PC is from Mesh.

The monitor from amazon is a lot nicer than the one that you could choose from the Mesh website.

A. Yes, since the GTX570 supports HDMI and so does the screen.

Just hook the screen up to the video card using an HDMI cable. Usually you will have to buy that cable seperately because neither the card or the screen will have it included.

If you didn't want to buy an HDMI cable then you could simply use a DVI cable with a VGA adapter to hook it up.

By the way, the 950W power supply is serious overkill. You could run that system easily with 650W
And 16GB of RAM is overkill too. You will never use more than 6GB of RAM unless you work for NASA or Pixar.

How do I transfer video from the hard drive to the SD card on a JVC Everio GZ-MG630RU camcorder?
Q. I have a 2010 JVC Everio GZ-MG630RU camcorder. i recently bought a laptop with Win-7. i found out that Win-7 does not recognize my camcorder . My question is: how do i go about transferring the videos on my camcorders Hard Drive to the cameras mini SD card ?

Thanx

A. Excerpt from Amazon.com. Read your manual and your question makes no sense. Why do you want to copy from HDD to SD when the camera doesn't seem to have an mini SD card?

Everio Features

All 2009 Everios make sharing and watching videos easier than ever. New for this year is the One Touch Export function that allows Everio videos to be imported into iTunes and loaded into an iPod or iPhone. All 2009 Everios also offer One Touch DVD burning and the One Touch Upload function that JVC introduced to users in 2008 as a new and convenient way to upload videos to YouTube.

To use any of the three functions, simply connect Everio to a PC using the supplied USB cable. Then, the user chooses one of three buttons on the Everio: UPLOAD, EXPORT, or DIRECT DVD. Pressing the button will launch the appropriate Windows PC application that comes bundled with Everio, and the user simply follows the simple on-screen prompts. With just a few mouse clicks the process of uploading to YouTube, exporting to iTunes, burning to disc or transferring to an external hard disk drive will be completed. For uploading to YouTube, the user can perform an in-camera edit of any length video to fit the 10-minute YouTube limit.

For disc based archiving, there is an alternative to using a PC. JVC offers the CU-VD50 Direct DVD Burner/Player as an option, which allows burning of Everio videos to a DVD disc without having to use a PC.

The new Everio MediaBrowser software supplied with all Everio models is a Windows application providing an easy-to-search calendar-type graphical interface for indexing and finding video files. Thumbnail images of recorded videos and stills are superimposed on the calendar so its easy to see when any scene was recorded. The Everio MediaBrowser also allows easy playback, simple cut editing, and "Decomotion" to spruce up recorded footage with animated graphics for upload to YouTube. It also supports Export to iTunes, Upload to YouTube, burning to disc or transferring to HDD.

Another new feature found on all Everio camcorders is Digest Playback, which offers an easy and entertaining way to check the content residing on Everios HDD or SD/SDHC card. The function automatically selects highlight scenes from among the recorded content using JVCs proprietary algorithm and plays back what looks like a "coming attractions" trailer for a movie. Sixty minutes of footage is condensed into five minutes of highlight scenes.

Other Everio features have been enhanced for 2009. Laser Touch Operation has been updated to allow control of zooming and recording using either the Laser Touch scroll bar or buttons next to the LCD screen, as well as by the standard zoom lever and REC button. And as before, Laser Touch makes it easy to browse through thumbnail images of recorded scenes and access menu selection. Power-linked operation, long offered by JVC, goes a step further this year. Simply opening the LCD monitor automatically opens the built-in lens cover and powers up the camcorder. Closing the LCD also closes the lens cover and shuts down the power. With Quick Restart, recording can start in about one second after the LCD is re-opened.

In addition to performance and convenience, the 2009 Everio line offers plenty of style and shooting comfort. A new design features elegant curves, a silver-framed LCD and a comfortable angled grip with a new dual use strap. The strap can be used in the usual camcorder fashion, supporting the users hand when shooting, or it can be extended and used as a wrist strap like the type on most digital still cameras.

What is the problem with my LCD Monitor?

Q. Now, before answering this question, please bear in mind that..

- I do not wish to buy a new monitor.

- This monitor is/was top of the line, and during at the time of it's release, it was the best in it's series.

- This monitor is my baby, and like I mentioned above, I am NOT buying a new one.

- I do not have the money to buy a new monitor.

Okay, now that we've got that bit of information out there, here's the issue(s)..

As of recently, my monitor will not keep a constant picture.

When turned on, the screen will flicker brighter and darker, only to go completely black after about a second and half.

When this happens, the only way to restore the picture is to turn the monitor off and back on again. Which results in an inconsistent picture(as described above).

Now, please bear in mind that the monitor has power, that the monitor itself is not shutting off. It is only the picture, contents of the desktop, and etc, that I am losing a visual off of.

And no, the issue is not my video card. As I have tested 2 other video cards with this same monitor, as well as 2 alternative monitors with the main video card that I use within my system.

If it helps, the brand of my monitor is Hannspree. The model number is HF257, and it is 24/27 inches in width.

[Please, only serious answers. Thank you.]
Just to note, I have had this monitor for 4 and a half years.
And, ugh.. How much will this likely cost for me to get it fixed ?

A. LCD monitors have a back light to display the picture. This back light is a florescent bulb, or lamp. Just like any other lamp, they eventually die. Your symptoms sound like the lamp or the inverter (the device that powers the lamp) is dying.

You cannot fix this unless you want to dive into the monitor's innards. Your only alternative is to replace it or get it repaired. And this will cost more than the monitor.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cost? Guaranteed more than the cost of a new monitor. I cannot give you a price because of the availability of parts, labor costs in your area, and such. But it WILL be more than a new monitor.

LCD Monitor 19 to 22 inches for under $60?

Q. I'm looking for an LCD Monitor 19 to 22 inches for under $60

A. You would have to look for a great sale... perhaps on black friday or cyber monday. Even on newegg, the cheapest LCD monitor is $86 dollars and that's for an open box item.

eBay or Craigs list might have some cheap monitors, but you would have to be careful about functionality and age of the equipment. Depending on where you are, the local newspaper ads might have a few as well.

A. The samsung is better. When looking at LCD monitors, the higher contrast ratio and the faster response time are both important factors. Samsung also has a good reputation for video products.

Any suggestions on a better build? Also, how long does the "back to school" megasale last?
Sorry about the other details that say "none". Just ignore those. Also, instead of an i7 what if I changed it for an i5 3570k? I'm hoping to build a computer that will not only last a long time but play future high-end games and MMORPGs.
And I have a monitor...

A. Willie,

Its all good, other than building a rig yourself you can't do much better, your GTX570 is the biggest bang for your GPU buck until the Kepler powered GTX660 comes out, and even then it might still be the better buy. By adding the pro wiring and sound insulation your hoping to get more care taken from the builder, its not big bucks so why not.

For the blinded by Bulldozer tard who can't see your Optical Drive: 24X Double Layer Dual Format DVD+-R/+-RW + CD-R/RW Drive (BLACK COLOR)

Performance Analysis

With the addition of numbers for the Intel Core i3-2100 and Core i5-2400 in some of our benchmarks, it's plain to see that even with a price cut, the FX-8120 struggles in most of our tests. In very multi-threaded tests such as Cinebench and WPrime, it just about manages to hold its own against the similarly-priced Intel Core i5-2400 - slightly ahead in WPrime, a little behind in Cinebench and noticeably faster than the cheaper Core i3-2100. The Core i5-3570K is much faster in both tests, but then it costs around £30 more.

Our image editing test was a real let down with the FX-8120. It came bottom of the graph, being trounced by a staggering 500 points by the Core i3-2100 - a CPU that costs just £90. Even the ageing AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition was considerably faster while the similarly priced Intel Core i5-2400 was nearly twice as fast. Clearly, if you do any amount of photo editing, the AMD FX-8120 represents particularly poor value.

With eight cores at its disposal, you'd think the FX-8120 might stand a good chance in our video encoding test. Sadly this wasn't to be and its score of 2,150 was over 400 points short of the Core i5-2400. Thankfully for the FX-8120, the Core i3-2100 was noticeably slower, with its two physical and two virtual cores not able to keep up.

Everything started to fall away from the FX-8120 again in our multi-tasking test, where it was yet again at the bottom of the pile, coming 100 points short of the much cheaper Core i3-2100, while the Core i5-2400 was nearly 50% faster - pretty damning result. Overall, it was no surprise to see the FX-8120 rock bottom, bettered by the Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition and Core i3-2100 and trounced by the Core i5-2400.

Our game test lacks data for the two Sandy Bridge CPUs as we tested these some time ago, however, with the Intel Core i5-3570K retailing for just £30-40 more, it's clear from our results that the FX-8120 isn't a great buy for games either. The Intel CPU was 60 per cent faster in Arma II while costing around 30 per cent more - not a bad rate of return if you can afford the extra layout.

Conclusion,

Sadly, its more of the same bad news for AMD or anyone with a Socket AM3+ motherboard looking for a decent CPU for around the £150 mark. The FX-8120 just isn't a good choice when it comes to the kind of applications we run on our PCs. It's regularly outpaced by far cheaper Intel dual-core CPUs, while the similarly-priced Intel Core i5-2400 is significantly faster in many of our tests. It's not all bad news for AMD - before we get accused of being biased towards Intel, we have no qualms recommending the A8-3870K for those looking to build a budget gaming PC, while we also recommend many of its graphics cards. Do drop the CPU OC its so easy why pay for it.

As it stands, the FX-8120 will have to be a lot cheaper for it to be worth considering over an equivalently-priced Intel setup, while owners of the Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition can rest assured that there aren't any worthwhile upgrades yet.

To save some bucks now going to a i5 3570k is a great idea and go with the cheapest GPU for now or if you have one already use it till the Kepler power GTX660 comes out.

I do recommend building your own rig not buying, you will have fun learning and taking control of your computational needs, and get more gaming power for your buck. I have added a few more links, hope they help.

Can't LCD monitors run games at 60fps?

Q. I've just bought a Samsung 2233SW Widescreen LCD monitor, and i'm wondering why games can't seem to display at 60fps when i'm turning my character in Call of Duty 4 for example. Everything else like running forwards or sideways, and even the other soldier's motions are 60fps but specifically when i'm panning the camera, there's a stutter. Even if FRAPS clearly shows framerates going way over 100fps in those instances. Before i upgraded my monitor, i was enjoying silky smooth 60fps or higher framerates on my CRT monitor, no matter what i was doing onscreen.
Is there a limitation to LCD monitors that i should know about? that even though the PC is churning out 60fps, the monitor displays significantly less than that?

My rig:
Core 2 Duo E7200 2.53ghz
2GB Ram
8800GT 256MB DDR3
Samsung 2233SW monitor

A. LCD monitors do not refresh like a normal CRT monitor does.

A CRT monitor refreshes the whole screen based on it's refresh rate, which usually is 60hz or 60 times a second.

LCD's refresh individual pixel changes, and the speed of that refresh is based on the monitors response time. Which for your monitor is 5ms.

That is why you are noticing the stuttering or screen-tear that you speak of.

Most monitors built for gaming have a sub 5ms response time because of that exact issue. Some people cannot tell the difference between 6ms and 4ms, others can.

You are one of the ones who can.

Whats the best way to clean a LCD computer monitor?
Q. I have a Toshiba Qosmio laptop, with a 17' LCD Flat screen and Im not sure how to go about cleaning it. Should I just use windex and a paper towel like I would on my TV, or is there a special way to clean LCD monitors?????

A. Cleaning Your LCD Screen

The major computer outlet stores are now starting to carry LCD cleaners for Flat Panel Monitors and Notebooks that do not contain the chemicals found in some commercial glass cleaners. These cleaners will definitely do the job nicely, but you do have to purchase them. If you do not wish to purchase these factory made cleaners, then you can clean your LCD Screen in the following manner.

What You Can Use

Water.

Water with a tiny amount of soft liquid soap.

Isopropyl Alcohol.

Hexane.

Petroleum Benzine.

Commercial glass cleaners that do not contain ammonia.

What You Should Avoid

Acetone.

Ammonia.

Ethyl acid.

Ethyl Alcohol.

Methyl chloride.

Toluene.

Commercial glass cleaners containing ammonia.

How You Should Do It

You should clean your LCD Screen display by applying the cleaner to a soft, clean cloth. Then you should wipe the cloth across the display from left to right, moving from the top of the display down to the bottom of the display. If your display contains grease or some other contaminant, then you should dampen your cloth with water instead of a commercial cleaner as the cleaner may smear the contaminants across the screen.

How Good is LED monitor Compare to LCD Monitor For photo Editing and Gaming?

Q. I have thinking to Purchase LED or LCD monitor monitor for my photo editing purpose but also for GAming, but my question which are the best for editing?

A. For those who don't know, LED monitors are just LCD monitors that use bright white LEDs instead of fluorescent bulbs as the backlight.

The main advantage of LED monitors is that they consume much less power than traditional monitors. They can also have improved contrast ratios since LEDs can be dimmed over a wider range of brightness (the backlight is dimmed when displaying dark colors).

For accurate color reproduction when photo editing, either LED or LCD technology would be fine. The best monitor for the job would depend on other factors such as panel type. A more expensive IPS panel would be better than a cheaper TN panel that would have significant color shifting when the viewing angle changed.

Dell U2412M monitors for photo editing?
Q. I currently have two TN LCD monitors and am really displeased with the image quality. I would like to upgrade and found the Dell U2412M, which seems to be very reasonably priced.

Does anyone have this monitor? Is it OK for photo editing?

A. Whatever monitor you use, you need to calibrate and profile your monitor on a routine basis.

The optimal monitor would be one that can reproduce the AdobeRGB gamut like the Color Edge monitors made by Eizo.

http://www.eizo.com/global/products/coloredge/index.html

Most people do not want to invest so heavily in a monitor so buy a monitor that is sRGB compliant. With such a monitor and using a monitor calibration tool like the Xrite Eyeone Pro. Here is how that works
