Can i connect my ps3 into a lcd monitor without hdmi cable//?

Q. :O

A. it depends.
if your monitor has HDMI capabilities, than you're good to go, but still u'd have to get audio via a sub or an amplifier if your monitor doesn't have speakers or a place to connect a headset.
if your monitor has a DVI socket, you can buy a HDMI to DVI converter cable (wont cost much) use it to play your PS3 and again you need another way to get audio because DVI doesn't carry audio.
if your monitor has only a VGA socket, use a HDMI to VGA adapter. but dont expect a good quality.

Is my monitor or my video card choking graphics quality?

Q. I've been looking into this sort of thing on and off for a while now, and i just can't find a straight answer. I built my first PC a couple months ago and i'm trying to determine what parts are holding back performance for my particular build so i know the most efficient way to upgrade it in the future.

Here's a look at the parts in question...

Athlon II X2 250
Biostar TA880GB+ (has HD4250 integrated graphics, bumped up from standard 500MHz core clock to 700MHz and upped to 512MB shared DDR2 at 533MHz in BIOS).
ASUS LCD Monitor (60Hz, 5ms, 1366x768, VGA connection)
Kingston DDR3 1333 (@1066MHz) (2 x 1GB)

Which of these parts is holding back video quality? (there's some tearing etc. with movies and youtube, not bad but still there). Is it the integrated graphics? the VGA connection instead of DVI or HDMI? the monitor specs? I know these components are the basics for a computer, but that's what i wanted at the time cuz i was/am on a budget and also a noob at PC building. it's just so darn confusing, and i know it's a kind of intricate question, but any insight would be really appreciated. Thank you!
If it's only the integrated graphics card that is slowing things down, then why is DVI supposed to be better then VGA and why are do some monitors have 2ms versus 5ms? and may have the same screen size (18.5") but different resolution?

@Rhyled, i forgot to say i'm running Ubuntu 10.10, so 1.5GB is fine for it. I was even sharing only 256MB for a few weeks but i think upping it to 512MB helped. It's also connected via ethernet with comcast, so i don't think it's connection issues. DVD playback and youtube video quality is about the same (it's not awful by any means, it is what it is, but it's not even regular TV quality honestly, you know? i have an old 27inch stereo TV that i play movies on with my xbox 360 and it doesn't tear, but with my PC it does). I'm just trying to understand the whys about all this. The rest of a computer seems so much more straight forward, but i've never really understood graphics/monitors and how they fit together.
Firstly, thanks for all the detailed answers guys! I appreciate it!

@Black Paladin and @1984...when i first installed ubuntu it gave me a gigantic list of drivers and updates i needed to install (and still does every few days), so i figured it was fine. however, i did "update" it to the most recent catalyst driver from 1/28 i think, but i'm pretty sure i already had it (bare with me, i just don't have the time to research AND fiddle with my computer very well due to good ol college haha). Anyway, that "tearing" or "choppiness" is still the same. I don't know if i'm describing it right, but while the picture quality is definitely passable, it basically just has that computery look to it when things on the screen are moving around a lot. Voice syncing is fine, and it's not laggy motion, just kinda blocky. I know my monitor is super basic, so that's why i wondered if it was the monitor. But the consensus seems to be that the monitor has nothing to do with it? then why are HD monitors bet

A. The monitor has nothing to do with video performance. Yeah a bigger and more high resolution monitor will give you a better picture but it will not impact the actually running and quality of performance from the video its self.

Go to newegg and invest in a fairly good graphics card. There are tons of them there. Shoot for the 75 - 125 dollar category and you should be fine.

If that's not it then it definitely is confusing. It shouldn't be giving you poor quality. Could be the cheaply made Biostar board? What is you OS?

UPDATE. If you are running Ubuntu there is a proprietary graphics driver that you need in order for your graphics chip set to work properly. The integrated graphics chip you described is a pretty modern and should not be giving you difficulty with something as simple as youtube videos. Were you prompted after your installation of Ubuntu to download and install the driver as you should have been?

PS a monitor has nothing to do with your performance. It is just a display.

2nd UPDATE

From the hardware you have described and the OS to the drivers I can't off the top of my head think of what could be wrong. While I use Linux myself I also have Windows in a tri-boot setup. Linux can sometimes do some strange things once in a while. It may behave differently on one machine than another due to your particular hardware setup. I've play with Linux on a variety of machines and have seen it do stranger things. If you are really determined to get to the bottom of this without further screwing up your setup if you have a copy of Windows and a spare hard drive you could unhook your current drive, plug the second one in, install Windows or some other version of Linux Unrelated to Ubuntu such as Vector, Slackware, or Fedora and see if it exhibits the same behavior. From what your describing I am leaning towards thinking that it might be an eccentricity of Ubuntu and its drivers on you particular system. I once had something sort of similar happen to me. I installed OS/2 on a machine that I thought would support it but once the drivers were installed The performance was always terrible, nay unusable ever though I far exceeded system requirements. Probably a driver issue with my particular hardware. Computers sometimes do strange things.

I can't see it so I don't know exactly what the distortion looks like but if it was a defective monitor it would display the same behavior on another machine.

Personally I don't even use an flat screen monitor. I still use a 12 year old CRT because I like it and my eyes don't focus well on HD and it make me nauseous. HD monitors have smaller higher density pixels resulting in a sharper image. They do not increase system performance.

Hope this helps.

Should I get a 24" LCD monitor to replace my 32" Sony Bravia TV for gaming? I think the 32" is use more eye?
Q. I was think of getting a 24 inches LCD monitor instead of using my TV as my PC monitor.
Is it a good idea?
I can't aim with a 32" TV for some reason.(Probably cause my eye have to look farther away)

Also I think my 32" strains my eyes cause its too big.
So I think I should downsize.

Any comments on best screen size & best non eye hurting LCD?

A. I currently have a 23.6" Asus 1080p monitor, it's fantastic for gaming. I have my XBOX 360 hooked up through it. I agree, sometimes smaller is better, all depends on how close you are to the screen.

I found this site in my source that recommends several gaming monitors. It all depends on your budget, but also if you can, you should opt for the 3D model (but you'd also have to buy the NVIDIA 3D kit), but 3D in video games is pretty awesome.

Asus is easily one of the best brands for quality in computer hardware these days. Have fun and game on!

Best 30" lcd monitor for graphics work?

Q. Hi,

Anyone can please give me some recommendation on a very good 30" lcd monitor. Price is not important as long as it worths it.

The ones I have found on the web are Dell, Apple, Samsung, HP and Acer.

Thanks!

A. For Graphics work our Studio uses Apple's Cinema Displays. The dot pitch is .250mm on the 30" LCD which is really fine for a 30" display and the screen supports 14ms refresh which is good enough even if you're capturing or editing fast action video scenes. The maximum resolution supported by the screen is 2560X1600 so you'll need a video card to match. The downside to such high resolutions is that you may need to get prescription glasses because everything is so small. We use the GretagMacbeth Eye-one to colour calibrate our screens which is a big plus.

The thin border also gives your eye the impression that the screen is larger than it is. Having said that when you sit less than 3 feet away from a 30" screen it is big!

If you don't own a Mac you'll also need a MAC DVI to PC DVI convertor and you'll also need a graphics card that can support such high resolutions. The NVidia 7600GT, 7900 and 7950 cards all support up to 2560X1600 but the 7600GT only supports it on one of the two DVI connectors! The ATi graphics cards also support such a high resolution but I'd start with the X1800 range and go up from there. ATi deliver better overall quality picture for 2D surfaces than Nvidia but you'd need to read a few reviews and see them running side by side to know there was a difference!

Hope this helps

Flatscreen TV vs LCD monitor?
Q. I have a great offer for a 40" LCD (NEC) PC monitor that I want to use for TV, games and DVD player. I have heard that PC monitor's actually have higher capabilities than an HDTV, is this true? (For high def I would need a tuner anyway, so I'm not worried that a PC monitor doesn't have a built in tuner). Your input is appreciated!

A. The only LCD monitors with "higher capabilities" than HDTVs are the 30-inch WQXGA monitors, which have 2560x1600 resolution. HDTVs top out at 1920x1080 (aka 1080p High Definition), which is what most computer monitors top out at as well.

So either one is fine, really, unless you want very high resolution, in which case you need a WQXGA monitor.

How to set up the LCD Monitor Circuitry(details) for DIY overhead projection?

Q. I have searched a lot but this step seems to have not been explained in any of the sites on net. Please give illustrated details as I might attempt to set up an overhead projector in future for gaming and movies on the wall.I want details regarding the connection of LCD on the overhead projector with my computer and safety measures and voltage requirements.please help.

A. Get a proper video projector. It will work for sure, and you won't risk breaking anything as you would an LCD panel.

What should I do with my cracked LCD monitor?
Q. My monitor just broke, but its old and i don't really care, so whats something fun or constructive that I could do with it. It looks pretty cool looking actually with the waves of color and such

A. One of the more impressive things I've seen people do with old LCD monitors (normally ones the backlight has won out in) is to remove the actual LCD components from the rest of the monitor and use it with a transparent projector. The web is filled with DIY instructions for it, and I'm only including a handful here - if you don't like them, a quick web search will turn up scads more.

Now, if yours is to fubarred to use as a proper video projector (you mention "waves of color", so the LCD screen might be salvagable or not), you might consider pulling off the above mentioned project, except through in an extremely wide angled fresnell lens. Then hook it up to the secondary monitor output on your PC, aim it at the ceiling, and put the visualizer from your favorite audio playback program on that screen. Instant room-wide trippy visuals that go with your music.

Eh, it's just an idea, anyways.

But no matter what you do, and I cannot stress this enough, BE CAREFUL! Though an LCD isn't as dangerous to work with as a CRT, there are still nasty things in the bowels of these that can shock you severely. Work safely.

Help, Canon 60d, 600d, 7d?

Q. hello. im going to get a new camera soon and going to be using it for photography course at college. i love photography and really want to make it as a job when im older. i know how to use a DSLR, and change iso and aperture etc as ive been using my brothers. ok, so i want a dslr that will last me a few years and is good in image quality, i will not be using video at all. ive been tossing between the 600d, 60d and 7d.. ive been in the shops and im not sure about the buttons on the 60d. i will be using my camera ALOT and taking it basically everywhere when i go out. HELP!!!!

A. They all use the same sensor so image quality and ISO are the same. What's different is the body, AF and speed.

If you need 8fps and 19AF points, go with the 7D. It's great for action in low light and outside. The 60D and 600D both have 9 AF points, but the 60D has them cross-type which are more accurate.

Besides, 600D has no top LCD monitor, no specific aperture wheel (you have to hold two buttons).

I think it would be best to go with the 60D as it's a mix of both models! However you should also look at the 650D which is amazing!

Should I buy the Canon T3i or T2i?
Q. I'm buying a new SLR camera, coming from a Sony ax, and I'm set on either a T3i or T2i. I will be primarily using the camera for filming but of course for photography, too. I'm told that it's not worth the extra money to buy the T3i because the T2i is just a good. So which one?

A. If you want a vari-angle 3.0-inch LCD monitor and wireless flash photography get a Canon EOS Rebel T3i. if no want that features get a Canon EOS Rebel T2i.

Building a gaming pc?

Q. http://www.build-gaming-computers.com/gaming-desktop-computer.html

look at the budget pc build on this site what more would i need and what do.you think of these components? what do you suggest? im only 16 so.dont have a big budget help me out :)

A. It depends on what games you're expecting to play as well as the graphics resolution you are attempting to reach. The higher the resolution, the higher graphics detail and also the resources in which it utilises.

The Budget PC price range, as with the previous poster, you need to increase the memory (RAM) to at least 6 to 8GB especially since most games of 2011/2012 will be fairly resource hungry and to compensate any efficiency issues that you might face with Windows 7.

4GB is not enough.

The hard drive itself, 1TB is a lot of storage; but if you're expecting to run it as your primary hard drive, especially with applications, operating system and archiving; then you should avoid it. You should look at getting a 7200RPM minimum speed primary hard drive of 320GB or better and then a second hard drive to operate as storage with 1TB or so and with a speed of 5400 to 5900rpm.

There will be significant performance issues when playing games upon one drive.

The 1GB GTX550Ti is a good card, but if you're expecting to play "high" graphics settings, then there will be a majority in which this video card will not be able to reach, especially if you have a LCD or LED monitor that can handle 1920 resolutions or better. Therefore, a GTX560Ti card or a HD6970 is the way to go and you will get "high" settings on the resolution given.

Even though you are on a budget as I have mentioned repetitively, the Black Edition of the AMD is perhaps ok; but for gaming it does not make any difference. I would have chosen an Intel chipset as an old LGA775 chipset will still out-perform this. In any case a lower grade Phenom II X4 series will be just fine in this instance.

Now, if you were to buy these parts individually, may be at a computer swap meet, or look at parts online; or even go to a competitively priced computer shop; then you might be able to get someone you may know or confident enough to put these parts together and save you the hassle in getting ripped off.

Best Gaming Rig Possible 2011?
Q. I'm creating the best gaming computer possible for 2011 my budget is $15,000 I'm sure i can afford anything.

at this moment my specs are:

CPU: Intel Core i7 990X Extreme Edition, 3.46GHz (3.73GHz Turbo), 6 CORE, 12MB CACHE, LGA1366

Optical Drive: Lite-On SATA Blu-Ray & DVD/CD Writer (12x Blu-Ray Write/ 20x DVDRW/ 48x CDRW) - Black

HDD: Western Digital VelociRaptor 600GB 10000RPM 32MB SATA 6Gbs

Case: Thermaltake Level 10 - Black Full Tower (No PSU)

Cooling: Noctua NH-D14 All-In-One Extreme Performance CPU Cooler

PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower 1500W ATX Power Supply with Cable Management SLI & EPS support

OTHER SPECS:

Monitor: Samsung 27" P2770HD ROSE-BLACK LCD - 5MS / WUXGA 1920x1080 / DTV-TUNER / D-SUB / DVI / HDMI / AV / SP

all up is $6,000+ which is a lot but i don't mind.

A. Pointless overkill
Games are just now starting to use quad core so that 990x is a waste for gaming
Most games barely use 4GB of ram so 24GB for gaming is a waste
A SSD would be a better investment then the VelociRaptor
Unless you're planning on running 4 GTX580s that 1500w PSU is a waste
The Noctura i find to be just silly when you're spending $6,000 on a system with 1.6 of it just going to the CPU, spending that much money might as well go watercooled especially if you plan on overclocking
I don't see the point in getting a 27" monitor if the res is no higher then 1080p which most 22" monitors can do

This is nowhere near being the best possible rig for now and some of it is pointless for gaming

LCD monitors vs Plasma monitors?

Q. if compare this two monitors,

which one is better? why?
which one u prefer? why?

what are the weakness of plasma monitors??
what are the stronger of plasma monitors?

what are the weakness of lcd monitors?
what are the stronger of lcd monitors?

got any website is about this information??

A. Before your decide to buy either a lcd monitor or plasma monitor, I prefer you choose the Samsung brand.

LCD monitors - energy saving - clearer picture - better buy for your money - more possibilities - what's yours?

Plasma Monitors - HUGE electric wasters - Burn out after a few years (means they stop working) - there some "brighter" - really expensive!

In my opinion, LCD monitors are much better..... trust me.

White vertical lines on an LCD monitor?
Q. Hi there-

Recently one of my monitors has started malfunctioning.

All dark colors are replaced with shimmering white vertical lines, making text unreadable and normal operation impossible.

The monitor is connected with a DVI connection. It still has the same problem when connected to other computers.

Should I bring it in for repair? Would this kind of malfunction even be fixable?

A. It may be fixable, but likely not worth the money unless it's a very large, very new monitor. It'll probably cost a couple hundred bucks unless it's still under warranty.

LCD monitors for gaming eye strain?

Q. I am going to be buying a new lcd monitor for gaming, I am looking at 2 LG monitors, with the same specs, 2ms, 10,000:1 contrast, the thing is, 1 is glossy and 1 is matte. Which one is better for eye strain? I know glossy will have glare which can cause strain, but i wont have a glare problem. which is better? not worried about colors being better on glossy either, strictly eye strain, (i get it easily)

A. You should buy a matte one as it has less reflectiveness.

What is wearier lcd or crt monitors.?
Q. What is wearier lcd or crt monitors.

Tell me the truth.

A. An LCD/TFT or CRT monitor are equally as easy as each other and so long as the refresh rate is high enough eye strain is not an issue

LCD or TFT monitors take up less space and also provide excellent display

CRT monitors are used where colour accuracy is paramount

So the use of the monitor depends on what you want to use it for, although for general use a TFT or LCD monitor will do what you want very well

What is the problem with my LCD Monitor?

Q. Now, before answering this question, please bear in mind that..

- I do not wish to buy a new monitor.

- This monitor is/was top of the line, and during at the time of it's release, it was the best in it's series.

- This monitor is my baby, and like I mentioned above, I am NOT buying a new one.

- I do not have the money to buy a new monitor.

Okay, now that we've got that bit of information out there, here's the issue(s)..

As of recently, my monitor will not keep a constant picture.

When turned on, the screen will flicker brighter and darker, only to go completely black after about a second and half.

When this happens, the only way to restore the picture is to turn the monitor off and back on again. Which results in an inconsistent picture(as described above).

Now, please bear in mind that the monitor has power, that the monitor itself is not shutting off. It is only the picture, contents of the desktop, and etc, that I am losing a visual off of.

And no, the issue is not my video card. As I have tested 2 other video cards with this same monitor, as well as 2 alternative monitors with the main video card that I use within my system.

If it helps, the brand of my monitor is Hannspree. The model number is HF257, and it is 24/27 inches in width.

[Please, only serious answers. Thank you.]
Just to note, I have had this monitor for 4 and a half years.
And, ugh.. How much will this likely cost for me to get it fixed ?

A. LCD monitors have a back light to display the picture. This back light is a florescent bulb, or lamp. Just like any other lamp, they eventually die. Your symptoms sound like the lamp or the inverter (the device that powers the lamp) is dying.

You cannot fix this unless you want to dive into the monitor's innards. Your only alternative is to replace it or get it repaired. And this will cost more than the monitor.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cost? Guaranteed more than the cost of a new monitor. I cannot give you a price because of the availability of parts, labor costs in your area, and such. But it WILL be more than a new monitor.

How Good is LED monitor Compare to LCD Monitor For photo Editing and Gaming?

Q. I have thinking to Purchase LED or LCD monitor monitor for my photo editing purpose but also for GAming, but my question which are the best for editing?

A. For those who don't know, LED monitors are just LCD monitors that use bright white LEDs instead of fluorescent bulbs as the backlight.

The main advantage of LED monitors is that they consume much less power than traditional monitors. They can also have improved contrast ratios since LEDs can be dimmed over a wider range of brightness (the backlight is dimmed when displaying dark colors).

For accurate color reproduction when photo editing, either LED or LCD technology would be fine. The best monitor for the job would depend on other factors such as panel type. A more expensive IPS panel would be better than a cheaper TN panel that would have significant color shifting when the viewing angle changed.

PC monitor or LCD/LED?
Q. For these past couple of days I've been wrestling with decisions...I have a PS3 but my current TV is awfully small...I decided to buy a new one...Now I noticed that PC monitors are a lot cheaper than TVs but are there PC monitors with HDMI port so I can connect the PS3 directly to the monitor? Or should I save up more money and buy a TV...?

A. I'm using a monitor right now for school and later on during the day I will switch it to my PS3. You can play games on a monitor yet I highly recommend you get a 2ms monitor. Any higher and you may feel like your controller is lagging.

Also LED are the best.

GateWay DEsktop lcd Monitor display Problem?

Q. this occurred when i changed something in the bios settings..the color button for the monitor is orange, i have already tried another monitor(didnt work), power cables are tighten and i have bought new RAM 4g

Whats Wrong?

A. Well if the monitor turns on it you might have to change the graphics settings try setting them to the lowest possible (on the computer not the monitor) and it should let you use the monitor and then u should be able to see something on the display and log in and change your settings around to fit the monitor.

If that's not it and it doesn't turn on at all (the monitor) it is most likely the RAM. if your BIOS gives you a continuous beeping noise its most likely a card is lose. But if that's not it and you get another beep code try looking it up.

make sure you know what one u have and just google it or yahoo or just search it.

there are a few types but i can only remember phoenix off the top of my head.

Power savings on a bare bones desktop with lcd monitor?
Q. If I run a 400 mhz pc and drop the 3.5 flop and 2 cd roms, minimum ram and slow hard drive what power savings would I realize against a new full blown pc with crt screen? I know laptop would be the best route but i dont have one. I'm trying to drop my electric usage down to 200kwatts a month. expected electric cost, 25 bucks.

A. My 4-yr-old Dell desktop and old CRT monitor (that goes into power-save when not in use) used about 85-90 watts on average, as measured by my WattsUp meter. My power now costs about $0.11/kWh, for a cost of about $0.25/day. If I let it run continuously, my cost is about $7.50/ month (which was enough to encourage a lot me to shut down when possible). Also on the circuit are a printer that mostly stays in power-save mode and a power-cube for an external DVD-RW drive.

Your mileage may vary - I hope your cost of electricity is less than mine.

I don't think it makes much difference how the computer is equipped (mHz, drives, etc.) because you still have to keep the power supply juiced. Most computers in the past 4 years will give modest energy savings by shutting off unused equipment - that's the benefit of the Energy Star program and cross-over of control technology from the laptop world. There is LOTS more potential for energy conservation to make its way into desktops, but manufacturers haven't had much incentive beyond Energy Star. Their primary incentive is to keep desktop costs down, and the standard laptop components that reduce their energy consumption *are* more expensive (although that's due a lot to their small size).

ideas on fixing a flickering LCD monitor?
Q. I left my computer running while I went to make dinner and came back to the monitor flickering. It is like a strobe light almost where it will display for a second and then turn black for a second. I have tried replacing the cable connecting it to the computer as well as the power cable. I also used different connectors so its not the cable or the connectors causing the problem. any ideas on other things that might need replacing?

A. Hello,

If your monitor is several years old then I would say you have a power supply failing in the monitor. If your monitor fits into this age group then you may want to look at the web page below that talks about why monitor power supplies go out and what needs to be replaced to repair the units. Most monitors should be easily repairable.

Now the second thing, if your monitor has a red or pink tint to the image then you have a different problem. The red/pink tint and flickering is caused by the backlight florescent bulbs going out. they are just like the bulbs in the lights in an office just much thinner and smaller. When they start to fail the color changer from white to reddish pink. You can replace the bulbs but this is a much bigger task than most people want to tackle.

Remember before you start repairing anything check the warranty on the unit, some monitors have a 3 year warranty and could get fixed for free.

Can I use Canon 7D LCD and ext monitor at same time?

Q. Hi, I'm shooting short movies using a DSLR rig with viewfinder. I've been working just fine like this, but I need someone to assist me on focus while i move around with my subjects and the different scenes.
I want the other guy to focus while i get the frames and shots. Is there a way to use the Canons LCD and an external monitor at the same time?
A splitter or something that keeps my camera LCD working?

A. Using EOS Utility supplied with your camera allows full remote control from a laptop while still keeping the camera controls live.
Might be a bit clunky wandering around with a laptop connected to your camera by USB cable though!

Canon Rebel T3i vs T2i?
Q. Last June I bought a Canon Rebel XS but I'm looking into newer cameras now so... What are the differences? I'v heard that the T3i has video and the screen flips out, but that's it. Is that true? Because if so i would get the T2i because I don't need video.. Thanks in advance xo

A. If you want a vari-angle 3.0-inch LCD monitor and wireless flash photography get a Canon EOS Rebel T3i. if no want that features get a Canon EOS Rebel T2i.

My 19 inch LCD monitor has "stuck Pixels" how can fix this?

Q.

A. If your LCD screen has a stuck or dead pixel , it's usually malfunctioning because the liquid in the liquid crystal display (TFT LCD) has not covered the whole screen. This can be easily fixed.

Steps
Turn off your computer monitor.
Get yourself a damp cloth, so that you don't scratch your screen.
Apply pressure to the area where the stuck pixel is. Do not put pressure anywhere else, as this may make more stuck pixels.
While applying pressure, turn on your computer and screen.
Remove pressure and the stuck pixel should be gone. This works as the liquid in the liquid crystal has not spread into each little pixel. This liquid is used with the backlight on your monitor, allowing different amounts of light through, which creates the different colours.

Tips
Many people report success with this technique but these instructions won't work in every case.
These instructions will fix "stuck" pixels, not "dead" ones. Dead pixels appear black while stuck pixels can be one constant color like red, blue or green.
An alternative, but similar technique involves gently massaging the stuck pixel on your screen. Another method involves playing a video (available for download in external links below) which changes colors 30 times per second.
If these instructions don't work, you can hopefully get the monitor fixed through your manufacturer. Follow the link at the bottom of the page to the Tom's Hardware article on how many pixels it takes for your specific manufacturer to replace the whole monitor. If your monitor falls under the specifications of replacement, get in contact with the manufacturer to set up replacement plans.
Gently tapping the area can also work in some cases.
You can find a program for removal at this site: http://fixdeadpixels.uv.ro. Put the colour square from the "dead pixel remover" on the actual stuck pixel from your screen.

Warnings
Do not attempt to open the monitor as it will void the warranty and the manufacturer will not replace it.
Make sure you don't get any electrical equipment wet or it may break.

LCD Monitor Stretching Issues?

Q. My dad received an 19" lcd monitor for christmas. It's a 16:10 with two plugs, one for dvi and the other for the monitor plugin. He has the monitor plugin but no dvi plugin on his pc. The monitor shows up fine but the screen is stretched just a tad bit and the fonts are a little disorted. On 800X600 is looks fine but any other resolution and it looks bad. I heard 1440X900 would be the best resolution for it but the display settings didn't have that option. His pc is a 2-3 year old emachine. What would be the best way to resolve this issue?

A. You need to lookup the native size for the monitor as LCD screens do not work well outside that resolution

a 19" screen would most likely require 1280 x 1024 for the best appearance but without knowing the make and model, this could be innaccurate.

Your best bet is to take a look in the manual that came with it and find the information, then , if your PC does not support this resolution, you need to upgrade the Graphics card to one that does support it

How do I reset my LCD monitor to factory default settings?
Q. I was messing around with the brightness, contrast, etc. using the buttons on the front of the monitor and now my colors is all weird.
I really wish there was, but I've spend 2 hours on this, trying to get back to the original factory default settings. There is no "reset" option.

A. Go to the menu or settings, and hit Reset Factory Settings.

LED HD computer monitors vs. LED HD televisions?

Q. I'd like to know whether there is any difference in Picture quality between LED/LCD HD monitors of a certain size and resolution vs. LED/LCD HD television of the same size and resolution.

Here, LED/LCD monitors cost significantly less than LED/LCD Televisions.

if there is no difference in picture quality than why the price difference?

Also, if I bought a big enough HD LCD computer monitor, with a good sound system and the right software, will I be able to enjoy a movie the same as I would with a television?

A. The LCD screen itself is the same for the same specifications. A TV has a tuner, audio amplifier, a remote control. I bought a 23 inch monitor for a bedroom TV because the refresh rate was much faster, price low, full HD 1080p. You just have to buy the monitor with the right connectors. In the United States, it was made illegal to not have a tuner in it in large size, so monitors are size limited if sold commercially. The market for large computer monitors is also fairly small, so price spread disappears. But, if the size and HDMI, and fully external audio and video signal (speakers in a monitor usually not very big), good idea. Yes also less HDMI inputs.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of LCD and LED computer monitors?
Q. I'm debating on getting a new 23" monitor and I keep seeing LCD and LED. Is one better than the other. Can someone give me more info, pros and cons. Thanks.

A. All new monitors are LCD panels. But some have CCFL illuminators behind, some have LED illumination.
What makes a difference is refresh rate, resolution, image quality on text and graphics, warranty, and type of LCD. Some better ones have an IPS, as opposed to the TFT type.
It is in the eye of the beholder. Since you give no clues as to what you will use the monitor for, cannot advise.

lcd monitor yellow helppp!!?

Q. When i turned my monitor on today it turned yellow. i checked if all the cable were in propely and it still didnt work. However i tested the monitor on a other computer it was fine. so it must be my CPU. so is by VGA port faulty. Could some please tell me how to fix it.
My monitor is a yuraku and it is a LCD.
i have seen another monitor on my comp and that turns yellow aswell so it is def the cpu

A. It sounds like your blue color is out. I have found that it is usually the cable connection that does that. Try completely removing the connector on both ends of the video cable and reattaching to pc and monitor to see if this helps. Also, if you have another video cable, try that or try another monitor on your pc to confirm that it is the pc's problem.

LCD Monitor problems?
Q. Aight, I got an LCD monitor with my DELL computer about 4 years ago, well, I knew that I should have gottern the extended warranty. the Monitor started turning on and off when the computer is turned on, however, when the computer is turned off, the light shows No Signal, then, when I turn the PC back on, it starts turning on and off again, I think its mainly a problem with the video input on the monitor itself.

A. How does a 3 year extended warranty help in your 4th year? It is always a gamble either way. I always recommend against BETTING against yourself.

Check to see if the switch is goofy. Hit it repeatedly to see if that is the source of the problem. One customer of mine had that problem, and we just TAPED it down, so it would stay on. (He uses a power strip anyway).

Then fiddle with the power cord connection. Maybe that is the source. If you have another power cord, try that. (I had an instance where the power cord was simply not making a good connection, and changing that did the trick).

If this continues to bug you, then consider getting a new one at http://www.newegg.com I recently bought a dozen 18 inch LCD monitors (Samsung) for under $200. They all are looking and working GREAT.

What would be a better choice 24" LED monitor or a 27" LCD monitor?
Q. I am looking for a new monitor and found these at the same price and same brand LG. Both are 1080p full HD? Which would be a better choice 24" LED or 27" LCD? Thanks.

A. personally, unless your gonna get 1920x1200 resolutions, get a 23" 1080p monitor, they are much cheaper and you can almost get two of them for the price of a dell 24"

what does LCD mean and analog Broadcast tuner?
Q. Please help Thanks

A. LCD is liquid crystal display.

Analog broadcast tuner means it can receive regular (non-digital) broadcast signals, which is what most of the local broadcast stations use. However, all broadcasts are required to go to a digital signal in the next few years (they keep pushing it back) and after that time, an analog tuner will no longer suffice.

At that time, for an analog tuner tv/display to work, you will need to buy a separate digital tuner.

I would not purchase any type of tv or monitor at this time that did not have a digital tuner

do all LCD monitors have HDMI ports?

Q. and are all LCD monitors compatible with a ps3?

A. No, however most new LCD monitors have DVI-D connectors, and you can connect DVI-D to HDMI with a DVI -> HDMI adapter or cable.

Remember of course that you will need to make separate arrangements for sound.

I want to ship and lcd monitor from the UK to India?

Q. what would be the easiest way to ship a Brand new LCD frm the uk to india and what are the customs duties????

A. The easiest way I think would be a way that you could track it, so that's going to mean something like UK's version of FedEx or Priority Mail of some sort. It's going to depend how much it weighs also.

You can check the duties and taxes for India here:

http://www.export.gov/india/dutiestaxes.asp

What is the standard warranty for LCD Monitors of Dell UK ?
Q. I bought it from PCWorld UK, dont know if the manufacturer warranty is valid ?

A. If you bought it retail, then unless you purchased an extended warranty - you get the legally mandated 1 year warranty from the date of purchase.

If you purchased it using a credit card (instead of a debit card) check with your credit card provider to see if they give you extended warranties.

Optimize my LCD monitor??

Q. Howdy. Got a new monitor (Samsung 920NW widescreen 19" LCD 5ms). I just tried playing Counter-Strike Source and the contrast or something looked horrible. I have tried messing with the monitor's settings as well as my vid cards display settings, but still can't find something normal enough. Anyone have any websites with color pallets I can optimize my lcd to? Or any programs to help me out? I need like a color bar, you know? Maybe if i have a color bar i can adjust my lcd to what i think is black, and white and green, etc.

A. well there are those things, but the best way to do this is get a monitor calibration tool, i reccomend GretagMcBeth, if you look for it they have one for about $80, this is used by pro designers and photographers to get the best out of the monitor!!!

software or a new monitor for photo-editing?
Q. I have a very limited budget. I'm using a computer I built myself a few years back and the pc specs are fine but I'm toying with two options and wondering what you think. Right now I'm using photoshop cs2 to edit photos but I'm really in need of something to help with organizing as I'm getting more serious about my photography. The monitor I am currently using is the Dell M782P CRT and I can afford to either get a decent sized LCD monitor or buy Adobe Lightroom 3 and the pantone huey pro so I can calibrate my crt. Which option would you say would be the most prudent and why?

A. The calibration tool is the best way to go for now.

I still use a CRT for my critical colour correction. There are very, very few LCD monitors that can be used to adjust contrast, brightness and colour. Those that can cost upwards of $2500 and more. Those LCD monitors are designated to AdobeRGB standards. Some less costly ones have a sRGB setting, but are still not recommended as monitors for producing "contract" proof quality images.

Lightroom 3 is an amazing product for shooters.

There is one thing you may want to budget for in the next few months. That is the Xrite Colorchecker Passport ($99).

Here is how that works when using it to custom white balance all of your shoots.

Macbook pro mid 2011 black screen?

Q. Okay I made the mistake of updating my macbook pro again because last time I did the same thing and this happened. I get the black screen but when I hook it up to an external monitor it is fine and I can still type on my mac and such like i am doing now.

Is there something wrong with the power support and the led lights? Why isn't my screen up. The computer is on but the backlit keyboard is off and the lcd is too. Help, I just bought this mac a week ago. It is brand new.

A. There is something in the update that is FUBAR'ed, it is shutting off the backlight on the keyboard and lcd, probably a mistake in the power save options. I would say step back the version if you know how to, and don't update it again.

Computer monitors turning off with certain actions?
Q. I have a dual monitor setup (HP w2408 wide LCD monitors). When I do certain things, the monitors will immediately go into sleep mode, every time, guaranteed. These things include:

- Starting playing a song in Winamp
- Once a song finishes playing in Winamp (or I press stop to stop playing a song)
- Plugging in my iPhone
- Unplugging my iPhone

I don't think it's a problem with my monitor, because BOTH monitors go into sleep mode. And I'm not performing taxing tasks at that time (for example I can have just restarted the computer, and plug my iPhone in (no other programs are running), and boom...the screens will go into sleep mode.

It's SUPER annoying, and I'm pretty sure this only started happening after the latest Window update (I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, Service Pack 1).

Anyone know of any fixes for this?

And yes, I checked my power settings. Set them to "never" turn off screen. Still happens.

A. Hello, If you want the display to be just on one screen, you will need to go to your computers' Display Settings which can be accessed by right clicking on your desktop and personalize your display or through the control panel->Appearance and Personalization-> Display. In the settings, for the multiple display option, select "Display desktop only on 1" or "Display desktop only on 2" depending on which monitor is 1 or 2. Here are some websites that will help.

Monitor Calibration?

Q. Can an LCD computer monitor be calibrated? I had a Spyder Pro2 and went through the whole process three times. Each time, everything turned a not so lovely shade of blue. I gave up and sold the Spyder on eBay. I have since read that you can't really calibrate an LCD monitor.

What's your experience with this?

Thanks.
MoJo, I did it a couple of the three times with the room lights off, but the results were the same. "I got the blues."

A. Yes you can but not as well on LCD monitors. When I bought a Spyder I went crazy and calibrated about 10 monitor (my 3 computer) and my friends 4 work computer (then few more elsewhere).

What I found was that CRT monitors are fairly easy to calibrate. And even the cheap CRT have very good color space. The LCD monitors are not easy to calibrate at all. I had to play with many settings BEFORE starting the LCD calibration. And if they didn't look right, I would have to play with LCD monitor setting and start the calibrations again. Some LCD monitors never look really good (exact) no matter what.

Then again on my real cheapy (Averatec) laptop, I was able to get top color quality the very first time. I mean the best of ALL the monitors (CRT or LCD).

On my photoshop workstation, I use a cheap $90 CRT because I can't afford a expensive LCD (ex: Apple) monitor. But even the cheap $90 CRT is far superior to most LCD monitors.

So in summary, you can calibrate LCD with mixed result. Some LCD are easier to calibrate but most are very difficult.

Good Luck.

Good monitor for Photoshop work?
Q. I'd like to buy a really nice monitor for Photoshop work which is at least 22" in size. Can anyone recommend some good options for this purpose?

A. If I was spending a lot of time editing photos, I would want a monitor with a fairly high resolution, and accurate color. (Virtually all LCD monitors can benefit from running a color calibrator.)

The point of a photo editing monitor is not just to have punchy, saturated colors, or deep black levels, or high contrast, but also the ability to display fine gradations of color at intermediate levels.

Gaming monitor: LCD or LED?

Q.

A. Here are the differences-
LED: A thinner monitor, no differences in resolution to LCD.
LCD: A thicker monitor, no differences in resolution to LED.

A more expensive IPS panel would be better than a cheaper TN panel that would have significant color shifting when the viewing angle changed.

can i use my 19" lcd monitor as a screen for my xbox?

Q. I have a 19" lcd monitor for my computer with a vga input only. I have a cable that is composite HD conections to VGA (red, blue, green, yellow, white to VGA). When i connect them i can get a picture but it looks like a night vision lense (way to much green). Why is this? And is there any way i can get this to work?

A. Wrong cable.

While YPbPr is similar to VGA, it is NOT the same signal. Which is why you got that wierd image.

You should be using the purpose-built Microsoft XBox HDAV VGA cable (sold-separately) to connect your XBox 360 to your monitor. http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360vgahdcable/

Connecting an Xbox 360 to an analog LCD computer monitor?
Q. What would I need in order to be able to accomplish this? The Xbox has a DVI port so I don't know if that would help answer this question. The monitor has a standard 15 pin VGA connector. Currently my gf is using it with the red, white, and yellow connectors on her TV, but it hurts her eyes and so I'm trying to find a way to connect it to her PC monitor in order so her eyes don't hurt after an hour of play..

Also, would the solution also cover the sound output?
hey sensei, that's good but it's not really what i'm looking for.. i did manage to find something but i'm still in doubt because i still have to find some adapters in order to be able to do what i've been trying to accomplish..

A. Now that the Xbox 360 has launched console videogames into the High-Definition era, experiencing your games to their full potential has become an expensive proposition. 360 games look great in Hi-Def, but many are almost unplayable on Standard-Definition TVs. Condemned is a good example of a game that becomes much too dark on SDTV, and Tomb Raider Legends can also be rather hard to play on an old TV due to the necessity of spotting hidden vines and small details.

The case for the necessity of HDTV for proper Xbox 360 enjoyment is pretty solid, but the price starts climbing quickly. In addition to the $400+ for a 360 and games, players are also presented with the necessity of a proper HDTV, which adds thousands to the overall cost. What's a devoted gamer on a tight budget to do? PC monitors may be the answer.

It's easy to set up a desktop gaming setup.

The Pros
Long before "HD" was the most popular consumer electronics buzzword around, PCs were pumping out graphics in resolutions well in excess of the 1280x720 that is 720p. PC monitors have to support a variety of resolutions in order to accommodate the myriad of computers they might have to work with, and as such they are generally very good with scaling non-native resolutions. In addition, LCD monitors have also become highly developed and affordable. Advances in manufacturing have dramatically lowered response times to the gaming-friendly 8ms-or-less range. Prices have fallen such that a 20'' widescreen LCDs that cost thousands a few years ago are now available for less than $400. Because manufacturer's cannot rely upon in-store placement, salespeople, and big marketing for PC monitors as they can with traditional HDTVs, the overall market is very competitive and without major markup, allowing for serious savings for you.

The Cons
Sadly, there are a few headaches with using a PC monitor as your primary 360 display. Size is the first great concern. The affordable sweet spot for LCD monitors lies in the 20-25'' range, which is not really large enough to make out while sitting on a couch in a traditional entertainment situation. Another problem is the fact that most PC monitors have only VGA or DVI inputs, no TV tuner, and no integrated speakers. The general lack of support for Component inputs isn't much of a problem, as VGA wires for the 360 are widely available, but you will likely have a bit of a headache if you want to connect more than the 360 and your PC to the monitor, and a VGA switch-box or TV card for your computer will add to the overall cost. Nevertheless, the savings and efficiency of using a quality monitor for both PC and 360 gaming is pretty strong.

Setup
VGA wires from Microsoft and MadCatz for the Xbox 360 are readily available at retail and online for around $30. When connected via VGA, the Xbox 360 has wider array of resolution options than when it is connected with Component wires. The resolutions are selectable though the Xbox 360's dashboard, and include:

640x480

848x480

1024x768

1280x720

1280x768

1280x1024

1360x768

When choosing an LCD monitor for Xbox 360 gaming, it's important to check that the LCD has one of these resolutions as either a native or supported resolution. Most modern LCDs in the 20'' range will have native resolutions higher than 1360x768, but that doesn't necessarily solve the problem. Trying to send a non-supported resolution into most LCDs will lead to a muggy, badly scaled, and possibly out-of-frame-image. In our test case, our BenQ FP202W 20'' widescreen 8ms LCD has a native resolution of 1680x1050, but looks best when the 360 is set to 1280x1024 widescreen. Other resolutions could not be scaled properly and looked pretty bad.

Sound is another concern. Because few PC monitors have integrated speakers these days, you'll need some kind of external speaker solution. The VGA wires for the 360 have optical (Toslink) outputs, so if you've got a nice soundcard for your computer with optical-in, you can take that digital signal straight into whatever speakers you're using with the PC. If you don't have optical support, you'll have to use the stereo-RCA wires that are integrated into the VGA cable. That's a hassle, because most 2.0 or 2.1 PC speaker kits only have mini-jack auxiliary inputs. You'll need to grab a little RCA-to-mini-jack dongle to allow for the connection.

Extra VGA resolutions. Make sure your LCD is compatible with at least one.

Performance
Once we found the best settings for the 360 on our BenQ FP202W, we were quite impressed with the results. Compared to a $1,000 Dell W2600 26'' HDTV, our $400 BenQ 20'' LCD produced a much cleaner looking picture free of nasty scaling and response-time blur. A nice feature of the FP202W is the fact that it is able to switch between its DVI and VGA inputs, which allowed us to connect our PC through DVI and the 360 through VGA and switch between them on the fly (perfect for slacking off at work).

Conclusion
There are some serious benefits to choosing an LCD monitor as your Xbox 360 display of choice. LCD PC monitors around 20'' are both more affordable and generally higher quality than similarly sized HDTV LCDs, and you can get some sweet double-duty out of them with your PC.

This is a stereo RCA-to-mini-jack plug.

On the other hand, if you really require standard TV functionality, like component, composite, and S-video inputs, or integrated speakers, the costs to add such functionality to a monitor will add up quickly. Also, two player action is a little limited on a 20'' monitor, and trying to crowd around your PC desk can be less than comfortable. While solitary Xbox Live addicts will have no problem, the more social among us may not be so happy.

In the end, it's really a matter of your particular situation. If you've got $1500+ to spend, a nice big HDTV is the way to go. If you're aiming to keep your costs below $1000, however, a PC monitor LCD is far superior to most of the shady sub-$600 HDTVs being sold at Wal-Mart.

Droid Incredible to Computer Monitor?
Q. I have been looking to get a larger, high quality computer monitor for some time now. I watch a lot of movies, tv shows and internet video. The 15inch display on my Sony Vaio VGN-NR120E just doesn't cut it.

While I know I can connect my Droid incredible, running 2.2, to my computer. I can connect it to my TV, both with HDMI/Charging cable. But my question is, if the lcd or led monitor has HDMI input, can I simply plug into that and watch whatever video is playing on the Droid, on the monitor?

I have the NHL app and watch a ton of live games, it'd b nice to simply put my monitor wherever I want to watch, plug in the phone and watch on much bigger screen than my tiny phone.

A. A good LCD monitor can display High Definition movies - 1920 x 1080 p. The highest resolution possible with the Droid Incredible is 800 x 480.

Connect LCD monitor with computer via HDMI.?

Q. HI,
i need to buy a monitor, so i was thinking that if i can use a LCD TV as monitor, would be great, so i want to that connect LDC TV with computer via HDMI how will be the clarity? i am an architect, so work on CAD and max. will the TV clear as monitor or? witch tv do u suggest?

A. You might not like my answer, but I don't think a TV is a great choice for computer monitors. The maximum resolution of any TV is 1920 x 1080 and some as low as 1280 x 720, while high quality 28" and 30" LCD monitors can go as high as 2560 x 1600. They will run about the same price at that size: ~$1K.

Unless your screen will be > 6' in front of you, the only thing you'll end up accomplishing with a screen that size is moving your head from left-to-right more often.

I talked a buddy of mine out of this same decision and he's happy I did. He bought a 24" Samsung monitor (1920 x 1200) for $350 and loves it. You might even want to consider dual-screening 2 x 22" or 2 x 24" for a MUCH bigger workspace (but more head movement :-) )

Of course if you can also use your TV for more standard purposes, you might want to just get the TV.

do all LCD monitors have HDMI ports?
Q. and are all LCD monitors compatible with a ps3?

A. No, however most new LCD monitors have DVI-D connectors, and you can connect DVI-D to HDMI with a DVI -> HDMI adapter or cable.

Remember of course that you will need to make separate arrangements for sound.

A. Just downloading the "Windows 7 Activator" crack will not work. You will first need to obtain a copy of Windows 7 and install it, then use the crack.

Also if you just want the MS office suite then you don't need Windows 7 you can get a copy for XP..

Samsung Touch Of Color T220HD 22-inch LCD HDTV Monitor compatible with windows 7?
Q. has anyone ever had an issue with the monitor listed above working with windows 7?

A. All monitors work with Windows 7, it's the Graphics card you have to worry about, if it supports HD output or not.

Monitors are standard display except for the quality, input type and the refresh rate.

What's the smallest LCD HDTV with 1080P?
Q. Here's the deal: I do a lot of graphics work on two monitors that are side by side. One of them is a 24" CRT and the other is a 17" LCD. The LCD broke the other day so it's time to get a new one. However, I want to get an LCD HDTV instead. That way, I can chuck my ten year old TV and clear up more space in my room. Problem is that I haven't been able to find an LCD with 1080P under 32". I can probably fit anything 30" and under on my desk. This would be used as the second monitor to the CRT and as a TV/video gaming (PS3/XB360). I need that 1920x1080 resolution for my work, so please leave comments about 1080P being useless on screens smaller than 42" and etc at the front door. A 720P resolution just won't cut it. Also, I will only be a foot or two away from the screen, so I will be able to tell the difference in image. Any help? And does anyone have a 1080P TV that is below 32"?

A. There are many 19201200 WUXGA monitors in the 19- to 30-inch size rangeparticularly in the 23/24- and 26/27-inch classesthat are capable of functioning as a 1080p Full HD display. Finding full blown 1080p HDTVs in the same size range is still fairly difficult though a few new models are slowly beginning to trickle out. For what its worth many experts and enthusiasts believe the ultimate WUXGA/1080p monitor/HDTV in the 19- to 30-inch size range will utilize one of the various IPS (In-Plane Switching) LCD panel technologies, i.e., S-IPS, AS-IPS, H-IPS, etc., along with the obligatory overdrive technology to reduce panel response times. Included in the list below are several FPDs that utilize in-plane switching LCD panels.

The features that I believe are important in a high performance, fixed-pixel, HD flat panel display are: adjustable gamma control (preferably over the range of gamma values from 2.0 to 2.6,) good black level performance, rapid panel response time (16 ms or less - worst case measured response time,) good screen uniformity, 1:1 pixel mapping, native 1080p24 support, true 10-bit panel technology, accurate gray-scale and color reproduction including support for full display calibration for each input, fully HDCP compliant, HDMI/DVI AND VGA inputs (YPbPr component video inputs would also be a welcome addition,) and above all highly effective video and image processing. (In addition, with all things being equal I prefer LCD monitors or HDTVs that use RGB LED back-light units rather than the standard fluorescent lamp-based BLUs.)

With so many new high resolution, HD displays in the 19- to 30-inch size range it remains difficult to narrow-down the field of choices to a select few. Starting with the list below I recommend that you attempt to narrow the selection using your own criteria and then visit nearby dealers to thoroughly evaluate the chosen displays on your short-list.

Below is a brief list of 22- to 27-inch class WUXGA/1080p displays currently available from which one or more models should meet most of your requirements.
