Is AutoCAD bad for my eyesvision?

Q. I am using AutoCAD almost 40 hours a week on an LCD monitor, and I am wondering if this can affect my eyes. Does zoom in/zoom out commands trick my eyes? I am farsighted (blurred distance vision ) and I think my vision is getting worse. If you have some tips tell me.

A. Your age may be a factor if you are close to 40.
Have your eyes checked to be sure..

im planning to buy a computer.which montor shld i go for is lcd better than the normal one?
Q. i need software which supports video, music and photo sharing as well as internet.as well as other autocad and microsoft application.wht should be the good specification?what all softawres shld i load in my computer/what all acessories should i buy and which brand offer all good ones whith nominal rates.can any one help?

A. First off I'll answer the question in your first heading. If you're going to edit videos and if you need an accurate monitor for autocad and such, then go for high quality CRT monitor, probably a 20". This is because it does not blur like some LCD screen because of their response times. You could also get an LCD screen with a very fast refresh rate (in the 2 ms range) if it's not a big deal.

I'm guessing the rest of your question refers to what kind of hardware you'll need to run autocad and media software. You'll want a core 2 duo processor and at least 2 Gigs of memory, seeing as autocad takes quite a bit of system resources. Try going for 4 Gigs of memory if you can to be on the safe side. You'll also need a socket 775 compliant motherboard to run the core 2 duo processor. Also, try getting a good video card such as the new nvidia geforce cards (the 8000 series or the 7950 GT). You can also add a tv input card to a pci slot on your motherboard. Get an asus P5B deluxe motherboard for integrated 7.1 audio and good performance.

I honestly don't know what else you need other than a case and a power supply of at least 550W to support your video card. All you'll need after this custom build would be an operating system (xp pro would be good), and your software. I don't do video editing so you'll have to look that up, but autocad can be obtained at autodesk.com and is around $4,000 - unless you can get it through your business. Good luck and hope this helps.

What are the pros and cons of LCD vs Plasma vs Rear projection?

Q. I also heard there is no noticable difference between 1080i vs 720p when your set less than 50"

A. LCD - This is the everyman HDTV. Its mass produced, cost effective, low on power consumption, and just what people "know." LCD monitors in computers make it a more familiar product for many. Its SD playback tends to be a bit sharp/crisp; think the evening news (this isn't good vs bad, this is personal taste). Its colors tend to be a bit more muted (again not good vs bad, just taste). LCDs have a matte finish for the viewing surface (the edge around it can be glossy though depending on model).

LCD's are inherently bad with motion playback. The suffer from motion blur (ghost trails). This is why you see "better" ones advertised with 120Hz or 240Hz refresh rates. The improved refresh rates are an attempt to overcome that inherent flaw.

LCD's will give you weaker blacks, colors, and contrasts on the whole. This is why you see the proliferation of the LED LCD. That technological step alleviates those LCD problems.

Plasma TVs inherently give you better blacks, colors, and contrast. They are also inherently strong in motion playback as their refresh rate is near instantaneous (like a CRT). Plasma colors tend to have more pop to them (not good vs bad, just taste). Plasma SD tends to be a bit softer (think Hollywood films); again not good vs bad, just personal taste.

Plasmas should be conditioned though. For the first 100-200 hours of operation you want to keep the contrast and brightness cranked way down. Then optimize and enjoy. This isn't necessary persay, but most "nerd" consumer groups will tell you to do it for paranoia sake.

Plasma TVs are a shiny finish though, so in rooms with light control problems that finish can create reflection problems. Plasma technology on the whole does use more power than LCD. But not all models are made equal, so one must do some homework. And worst case scenario, a "very bad" Plasma TV would likely only cost you $40 more per year in electricity bills (and again not all models are made equal).

Plasma myth (1) - They experience burn-in. This is inaccurate, those days are gone. Just condition the gasses and then use it as normal and you're fine. Also, the better sets have built-in features to prevent this (on top of the technology just generally being better now than say 5 years ago).

Plasma myth (2) - They have short life spans. This is another inaccuracy. Most are now rated in the 60,000-100,000 hours range. At 8 hours a day 365 days a year that would mean a life of 20-30 years. So do you think you'll still want/own the same TV in 15 years, let alone 30?

Plasma myth (3) - They won't work in high altitude because of problems for the gasses. This is again no longer an issue. Current Plasmas can be purchased and used in mile high Denver, and above, so you'll be fine where ever you are (unless you're living in the Himalayas).

720 vs 1080 - There is no set size on when it matters. Typically though its though that anything under 40" definitely doesn't show any of the advantages of 1080. 40" - 50" is the grey area where some argue it matters and others say maybe a bit or not so much. 50" and above you definitely want native 1920x1080 resolution for your TV, as the advantages will become noticeable.

Damn almost forgot... DLP Rear Projection. The image quality, on all levels, is fairly close to Plasma. It would be at par with it if it wasn't a dying technology. Mitsubishi is the last developer of the technology after Samsung recently announced they were giving up on it. So Plasma is just getting more R&D and advancements than DLP. That said though DLP is still a rock solid image.

Its often joked that DLP will be the last TV you ever own. That refers to the expectation that the TV will still work until its actually physically falling apart (decades). But the bulbs in it need to be constantly replaced. Depending on the bulb and your TV usage, it could last anywhere from 1 year to realistically 4 years. Replacing is something you can do on your own easily enough. A new bulb though costs $200-$250 or higher. Also, some sets have air filters that you should clean every month or two. So there is certainly an inconvenience factor in owning the sets.

How do I play NTSC PS1 games on my PAL PS3?
Q. I have a few PS1 NTSC games that I wanna play on my PS3 (I have a modded PS1 but it isn't as clear on my HDTV.) Everytime I stick a disc, the PS tunes me about the regional codes and stuff, how do I prevent that? P.S... THESE ARE ORIGINAL GAMES, NOT COPIED OR FAKES.

A. HD on PS3 have no PAL/NTSC problems but if you use the regular composite cable then there will be problems.

HDMI usage also must be complemented with HDCP compliant HDTV or any HD display such as PC Monitors/LCD's or no display at all.

Using Component cables gives you resolution up to 1080p on games but only max 720p on movies.

(Using Regular Composite cables supplied with PS3) PAL games will not run on NTSC PS3 via regular NTSC TV

(except for PAL games that are programmed by developers to support both PAL and NTSC signals) and vice versa.

Hope that answered your questioned !

I would like to get started in photography..?

Q. ...especially since i plan on traveling a lot when I'm older and out of school. Can anyone give me some suggestions on what are some good, affordable camera's that I would be able to buy in order to start out?

A. Well....Anyone planning to start digital photography and purchasing a new digital camera should think about this:

There are TWO primary factors to consider:
1. How much money do you have to spend????
2. What level of photography do you aspire to "progress to" in the coming years ? (i.e. basic beginner, intermediate, or professional/business use).

For most beginners to intermediates I usually suggest one of these two manufacturers:

1. Canon EOS Rebel model XSi. (Also known as the Canon 450D in Britain)
The "kit" package comes with an 18-55mm zoom lens. The camera has pop-up flash, 12.2 Megapixels, and shutter speeds up to 1/4000th, 100-1,600 ISO sensitivity, 7 autoexposure Scene modes, PLUS Shutter Priority, Aperature Priority and Programmed Exposure Modes and Manual. It also has a 3 inch LCD screen, 3.5 frames continous per second max., 9 point AF system, Live View Functioning and the ability to record photos in 3, 6 or 12 Megapixels PLUS numerous other great features found only on more expensive cameras. Wal-Mart is also selling them now for about $799. Sam's Club also has them for $729.

I bought one of these 6 months ago and use it as my "back up" camera to a more expensive Canon EOS 5D Mark II. I absolutely love it. I have gotten some fantastic photos with it and cannot praise it enough. I routinely enlarge my photos to make 8x10's and 11x14 size enlargements with no noticeable distortion or loss of detail in the pictures.

2. Nikon D-90: If you prefer to use Nikon equipment I strongly recommend the Nikon D-90 which has 12.3 Megapixels, 3 inch monitor with Live View, 200-3,200 ISO sensitivity, 11 point AF system with Face Priority, 4.5 frames per second in continous mode, 5 advanced Scene modes for auto exposure plus Shutter Priority, Aperature Priority, Programmed Auto plus Manual. The D-90 sells for around $900-950. (Body ONLY. The 18-55mm lens cost an additional $150.-175.) Typically, Nikon equipment is slightly more expensive than Canon equipment, but (having owned both Nikon and Canon cameras), I have seldom noticed BETTER quality results using Nikon equipment.

These two selections are probably the best choices for any beginner to intermediate skill level, offering the most lenses and other accessories, dealers and places to purchase.

I strongly recommend that ALL beginners buy a good book on digital photography AND take a class from a Vocational school or Community Education Center in your area.

You can learn more about the technical specifications of each of these two cameras at these websites:

A. You have listed quite a few different camera types.

Keep in mind the following points.

Compact cameras (the slim, colorful ones) - designed to be easy to use, take decent pictures and be suitable to be carried around or slipped in a hand bag. Lenses and sensors are small. All have live view, viewfinders are becoming rare. In this range, look at Canon, Sony, Nikon, Panasonic.

Mid Range/Big Zoom/SLR Like (The sony H50 and similar) - Smaller than an SLR, but often have some manual control options available. A larger body than a compact, allowing for a larger sensor and zoom. Lens quality is generally higher than a compact, but you have a fixed lens which cannon be removed. Generally have live view and viewfinder. Look at Canon, Sony, Nikon, Panasonic.

Digital SLR. - "Bulky" Cameras with large sensors and removable lenses. A lot more versatile, as the camera can be adapted to your needs through purchases of flash, lenses etc. Many models do not have live view, but all have viewfinder. Generally do not have any movie modes (Except the D90 and 5D Mark II). DSLRs come in Entry level, Enthusiast level, and Pro level Models. If you are looking at an SLR, take a look at http://www.digital-slr-guide.com/ as there is an awful lot to consider.

Good Luck!

How can I know if DVI port on LCD monitor is HDCP-compliant?

Q. I'm planning to connect my ps3 to LCD monitor. I have DVI to HDMI cable. How can I know if DVI port in LCD monitor is HDCP compliant?

A. Google up the model name of your LCD monitor and read the specifications on the manufacturer's website.

Or, read your manual

Is there a LCD monitor which can connect to a PS2?
Q. I need to buy an LCD monitor, preferably 21 inch or 22 inch which has connectors for PS2 and preferably PS3 also (though the latter is not important).
I already have a Z-5500 speakers which are said to be the best in pc speakers, I also would like to get an LCD monitor which will make it really cool to play games on with my PS2.
Thanks.

A. i recommend Samsung Touch Of Color T220HD 22-inch LCD HDTV Monitor.
Touch of Color bezel - While the crystal-like bezel frame catches light beautifully, it actually reduces reflection of light off the bezel. And since the rich red color is injection molded for a blown glass effect, instead of spray painted, there is less environmental impact. It's easy on your eyes as well as on the environment
Dolby Digital Surround (3 W x 2 ch) An invisible speaker system with Dolby Digital Surround (3 W x 2 ch) gives sound quality to match the impressive picture.
10,000 - 1 Dynamic-Contrast Ratio - The ultra-wide range gives you blacks and whites that are full of detail, even under adverse lighting conditions (typically 1,000 - 1 static-contrast ratio)
300 cdm2 Brightness
Full HDTV monitor - The T220HD features a built-in full HD 1080p digital HDTV tuner, so you can watch both TV and HDTVDual HDMI inputs, DVI and VGA inputs / 2 HDMI connections

How can I connect a LCDTV to a desktop home theatre personal computer(HTPC) even if the tv...?

Q. ...does not support PC formats?
I own the LCDTV Viewsonic(3235) and I would like to use this with a home theatre personal (HTPC) desktop computer for recording from TV and FM radio stations. I also want to use the (HTPC) desktop as a digital/analog TV tuner. Do I have to purchase any electronic parts in order to make the LCDTV and HTPC compatible?

A. Well, if I'm correct your lcd tv has a vga input. You can hook your computer up via this input. The only thing the tv will do is act as a monitor. It is not going to help you record anything.

For recording you will need a tv tuner card for your pc. A tv tuner will allow you to watch tv as well as record tv.
There are two types of tv tuner cards. There can be digital or analog. Digital can be used to get Over the Air(OTA) broadcasts which are HD resolutions. Analog cards are used to get regular broadcasting hooked up via cable tv or antenna.

There are many tv tuner cards available. A good start would be the ATI all in wonder cards.

I think there are some cards that have both a analog and a digital tuner in one card.
Here's one such card:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2905637&Sku=H56-2010&SRCCODE=GOOGLEBASE&CMP=OTC-GOOGLEBASE

This should have you set in your HTPC.
Here's an article that will help you build a HTPC and what components you will need.
http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2186980,00.asp

It might be a little over the top, but it's a general idea of what a HTPC should be capable of.

Whats a good gaming laptop or gaming desktop for around 1000-1300$?
Q. Im going to get some money Pretty soon and i want a good gaming laptop or desktop for FPS games. Im a hardcore gamer on the Consul and i want to take it to the PC just because i think it would be a better experience... Can anyone name and give me a link to a good gaming laptop or desktop?

A. You can try cyberpower PC http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Gamer_Xtreme_2000/ . This tower has 2x 6770 in SLI, an i5 2500K ( K for unlocked and overclock friendly), Asetek 510LC Liquid Cooling System with dual 120mm fans, 750watt PSU, Win 7 included and tons more. Within your budget at $1200.75. No need for the 2600K. If you were doing a ton of encoding & rendering maybe. but the 2500K is extremely powerful when it comes to gaming. This quad core 3.30 GHz gaming computer should work VERY well for you. Grand Total: $1,200.75 after 5% instant rebate and shipping. Yes Shogun 2 is included. I slapped this together in about 5 minutes. This is just to give you a general idea about them.

YEAH WHATEVER. THEN YOU ADD IN SHIPPING AND I HAVE TO GIVE AN ARM AND A LEG. Nope. This includes the shipping.

How to configure vista to activate touch screen?

Q. I have a LCD monitor and I want to activate the touch screen features in windows. How do I suppose to do it?

A. try the microsoft web site, thats all i can say

Found out my Dell E153FPT is a touchscreen. How do I restore?
Q. Bought a nice Dell E153FPT LCD flat screen monitor at a thrift store. Found out that this model number is a touchscreen. I am disabled and would find it very useful to have this feature restored. Any suggestions? Thanx!

A. >I know that Windows 7 has accessibility features for handicapped individuals and so if you have W7, you should look at HELP to see how accessability features are enabled including touch screen applications. According to this Dell description, the touch features are enabled by specific touch enabled software...

"While touch optimized applications are not required for touch screen usage they are especially compelling for: Customers with touch optimized applications (Retail Point-of-Sale, Manufacturing, Banking, Hospitality Kiosks, Food Service, Hospitals, Electronic Voting, Tablet applications); customers who utilize menu driven applications (Healthcare); customers who utilize browser driven applications (Call Centers); disabled users, or other users with mouse challenges."

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/popupproductdetail.aspx?sku=320-4088&?~lt=popup&c=us&l=en&s=dfb&cs=28

So I presume this means there is nothing software wise for the LCD itself. Your operating system and software have to provide the ability to use the screen as a touchscreen. if your software has that capability, you should just have to plug the LCD into your computer and it should be working for you.

Read your specific HELP sections in your software and enable any windows features which interface with touch capability.

Is it true that putting your speakers beside an LCD monitor can harm the monitor?

A. it happens if u have a very very very poor quality monitor otherwise it does not happen.

How to have audio on Xbox 360 via HDMi on LCD Monitor without having the LCD connected to a Desktop?
Q. Is it possible to connect the Xbox 360 to one of my LCD monitors with HDMi and still have audio without having to connect the PC in and other stuff ... The problem is that the actual LCD Monitor does not have incorporated speakers ... so can normal speakers be connected to my xbox using some cables or extention. Much appreciated

A. Yes, you can do that. You have two options:

1. You can use HDMI for video and the optical audio output on your Xbox if you have one of the model with both.

2. You can use HDMI for video and buy the A/V HD adapter that allows you to use either optical or the red/white rca stereo hookups. You can find these adapters on amazon.

And, of course, you'll need a sound system/speakers that can use whichever connection you go with. You can can an adapter that will go from rca stereo to 3.5mm for portable speaker systems.

Does a LCD Monitor consume much less electricity than a CRT Monitor (as far as computers are concerned)?

Q. I am from India and I have bought a LCD monitor. I have heard that a LCD monitor does not have the glare which a CRT monitor can emit, and so is also better for the 'eyes'.

A. They do in fact use less electricity than crt monitors do.

See the below article for more comparisons:

Does Westinghouse have a firmware upgrade to convert its 1080p 42" LCD monitor from NTSC to PAL?
Q. I moved from the US to India and cant get it to work anymore.

And on that note, does PAL/NTSC matter in composite signals too?
The 220V conversion isn't an issue (atleast not for now)..

how would I change the signal board for the PAL tuner and Pal Processor. Where would I even be able to find the materials for this?

A. You need to buy some boards first...

You need the Signal board for the PAL tuner and Pal Processor.

Then you'll need to get the power supply for 220 V ac conversion...

Once you get that, you should be fine.

Do NOT get the boards for the model listed...you'll want the Indian version of the same model.. cross that over 1st. Then order the boards that fit.

Is it possible to use an LCD monitor for a TV?

Q. I would like to purchase a LCD monitor and hook it up to my tivo and some speakers, they are so much cheaper than LCD tvs. Is this possible? Do I need some type of converter? Do LCD monitors all have the same inputs? Help please!

A. It depends on the cable service you got your Tivo hooked up to.

If your cable service is standard-definition (uses coax or composite to connect to a TV), then you can't use a computer monitor.

If you have digital HDTV cable service and the cable box has a DVI or HDMI output, you can use any HDCP-compliant LCD computer monitor to display the HD cable box's video output.

The video signal carried by HDMI is in fact single-link DVI, so a DVI-to-HDMI cable can be used to connect an HDMI cable box to a DVI monitor. And cable boxes ARE TV tuners (which is why they have remotes for changing channels), so the monitor does NOT require a tuner on-board to work with an HD cable box. It merely displays whatever DVI signal the HD cable box is telling it to display.

Since broadcast-quality High Definition TV signals are at least 720p (1280x720 resolution), pretty much any LCD monitor can display 720p, as long as it is HDCP-compliant so it will work with the digital HD cable box.

If you want 1080i broadcast HD, you should get an HDCP-compliant monitor that can display 1920x1080 resolution.

Keep in mind most computer monitors have no speakers. You will have to hook up a separate set of speakers to the cable box to get audio.

Hope this helps.

Does LCD monitor or plasma give more better quality image?
Q. I know LCD monitor is cheaper then plasma but more LCD have 1080p, right? Which is better? Why there is a price difference? I know LCD is liquad, and?

A. Plasma has better response time so will show movement better than an LSD TV; important when watching action particularly sports. A good LCD has a 5 Milli Second response time where as a good plasma 0.2 MS.

LCD screens are generally much brighter and better suited for rooms the receive a lot of light. Plasma's are better in darker rooms; easier on the eyes.

Generally plasmas are 42 inches or larger. LCDs are manufacured by more companies.

LCDs sometimes are manufactured with pixles that are burned out causing a dot on the screen. Plasmas have problems from screen burn.

I decided after much research to forget about buying a set for another year; I was holding out for 42 - 48 inch 1080 p plasma. A couple of weeks ago Tiger Direct had a 42 inch LCD 720 p set on sale for $699 and I couldn't resist. I am extremely happy because I am getting a great picture, I have all the bells and whistles (PIP, split screen, TV tuner, multi connectors including computer) and I paid a lot less than anything I have seen before or after.

My advice: Get a good inexpensive 720 p that you you like (plasma or LCD) make sure it has an antenna (broadcast hi def is better than hi def on cable or satelitte), and enjoy. 1080 p is more expensive and really only gives a better picture with a Blue Ray DVD (also relatively expensive).

By the time prices fall for Blue Ray machines and discs and more channels are broadcasting in hi def the price of TVs will fall dramatically. Move the set you buy now into another room and get yourself a bigger set

What is the best monitor for photo editing under $400 ?
Q. LCD or LED monitors? What brands are the most successful among other photographers.

A. Any monitor that is routinely AND properly calibrated (at least once a month, or more often) with a good calibrator is better than a $1,500 monitor that is not calibrated.

At the >$400 range, almost anything will suit your purposes.

For a monitor calibrator, I use a DataColor Spyder3 Elite...but there are other good brands as well.

On of my favorite editing monitors is a Peachtree CRT. It is a generic Sony Trinitron and the colors are flawless. For LCD's, I am using Dell's.

How many watts of power will I need for my gaming computer?

Q. This summer I plan on building my own gaming PC and assembling it at home because it is cheaper and I like to customize things myself. It is an 850 dollar computer but the specs are exceptional. For the motherboard and processor, I am following a YouTube tutorial. In the YouTube video it says only 500 watts of power are needed, but in the comment section somebody (who was picked for best answer) claims that you actually need at least 630. I am planning on getting a 750 watt battery anyways, but if I don't need to, I'll try and get something cheaper. So how much power will I need based on this setup:

A. 500W (or greater) power supply with one 75W 6-pin PCI Express power connector recommended

http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/7000/7850/Pages/radeon-7850.aspx#2

Thus, for a system with a single HD7850, a good branded 600W PSU is the ideal one to get and since your mobo does not support crossfire, then that 750W is too much for that build since Xfire is already not possible.

BTW, for Xfire, amd recommends 600W minimum, thus 700W is the ideal one to have (just an added info).

What's the difference between buying an LCD monitor and an LCD Television today?
Q. Because I'm thinking of getting an LCD monitor for my computer but why not just get an LCD TV and use it as my computer monitor among other things? Whats the difference?

A. There are numerous differences between lcd monitors and lcd tv sets today. The biggest difference is resolution. LCD monitors have way higher resolution than HDTVs. Most consumer HDTVs max out at 1920x1080 pixels (1080p aka "full HD") while common monitors with screen sizes 24-30" are capable of 1900x1200 or even 2560x1600 (that's way more resolution than your common 1080p tv set). Basically, LCD monitors have better pixel pitch since they have a lot more pixels at a much smaller screen size (compare a 1920x1080 50" with a 2560x1600 resolution 30" monitor).

Next is panel technology. Most manufacturers of LCD monitors use TN panels, while almost all LCD tvs use something like MVA (not sure about ips). Basically, TN is cheap and the monitors reflect this in their prices. TN gives fast response times while MVA/IPS allows excellent color reproduction as well as preventing colors from shifting when viewed at an angle. However, there are many mva/ips LCD monitors too, it's just that they're usually much much more expensive.

LCD monitors also usually do not have tv tuners but some, like the samsung T240HD do come with a buil-in tuner and a remote control.

Before buying, try to research first on the LCD tv's input lag and response times, since these will be the factors most readily apparent in everyday computer use.

How to change the the resolution on my LCD monitor for my PS3?

Q. I got a Viewsonic VA2448m-LED 60cm/24" (23,6" viewable) Widescreen LCD monitor that supports Full HD 1920x1080 resolution. Whenever i play most games a "Resolution Notice" pops up that says for best picture quality change resolution to 1920x1080? ive searched the menu and cant find any way to? is it already on that resolution?

A. The console should automatically adjust resolution. I believe the only options available is to change the quality in the ps3 settings. Make sure it's on 1080p and not 720p.

How can I use my Wii with my Dell monitor and external speakers?
Q. I have a Nintendo Wii and a Dell 2405FPW 24-inch LCD monitor. The Wii comes with one of those red/yellow/white three headed cables which plugs in to my monitor just fine - but I can't figure out how to get sound. It seems that the red and white cables are for audio - there are sockets for them on the monitor, but I can't work out how to wire my external speakers up to the monitor or to the Wii. What do I need to do?

A. The red and white are for audio. You can either plug these directly into an amplifier or find out where the headphone socket is on your Dell monitor (there should be one if there is an audio input) and plug some external speakers into that.

What would i need a mac mini to have on the back if i want to use my 42" lcd TV as it's monitor?

Q. I'm wanting to purchase a mac mini. What does it need/require to utilize a 42" Hitachi LCD TV as it's monitor?

A. 42-inch LCD HDTVs usually have HDMI ports.

Your Mac Mini will have a miniDVI port on the back. Apple used to include a miniDVI-to-DVI adapter with Mac Minis, but no longer, so now you will have to buy the adapter separately.

You will need a miniDVI-to-DVI adapter and a DVI-to-HDMI cable. I have also heard of third-party miniDVI-to-HDMI cables, and those will work too if you can find one.

I'm using a miniDVI-to-DVI adapter and a DVI-to-HDMI cable to connect my Mac Mini to my 52-inch LCD HDTV, and it works perfectly: http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f347/armchairaviator/computer/IMG_0880c.jpg

Hope this helps.

What sort of monitors does the mac Mini work with?
Q. I'm looking at buying a mac mini, but I'd really prefer to not pay another 500 dollars to get the mac's display, and the mac website is incredibly vague. Can I buy another display and attach it to the mac mini, or would that just not happen? thanks.

A. The Mac Mini has a DVI output jack, and it comes with a DVI-to-VGA adapter.

So it will work with any monitor that has either a DVI or VGA plug.

I own a Mac Mini, and I have used it with a variety of monitors from a 15-inch Dell LCD with just a VGA jack, to a 52" Sony Bravia LCD HDTV using a DVI-to-HDMI cable. They all worked beautifully.

Hope this helps.

How is the Dell studio 17 for photography?

Q. Just need to know about the screen. I currently use a Dell monitor 17'' nothing really special and it's fine, I will still use it with my laptop but I'm wondering how much difference there is between the two.

A. Until the monitor is calibrated and profiled, NO monitor will provide you with the information you need if you are attempting to retouch image files or adjust colour. This applies to notebook computers as well.

Since the only LCD monitors that be used professionally by retouchers cost from $2,500 and up, most of us poor photographers still use CRT monitors that have been calibrated and profiled. We do this each week to assure colour accuracy.

Do you have a calibration tool like the Pantone huey, I1Display 2 or ColorMunki?

http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/reviews/pantone_huey.html

http://www.xrite.com/product_overview.aspx?ID=788

http://www.xrite.com/product_overview.aspx?ID=1114

The huge plus for the Studio 17 are as follows:

* Intel® Core™ i5 CPU
* 64-bit operating system
* 4-pin IEEE 1394 port
* 54 mm ExpressCard slot
* 8-in-1 Media Card Reader

I would add 6 gb of RAM if you intend to do any video or RAW file processing

Where can I get a reasonably priced small computer monitor?
Q. I do basic troubleshooting for friends and family and sometimes come into the issue of their monitor doesn't work. Connectors and firmware aside, does anyone know where I could purchase a small lightweight computer monitor with VGA and/or DVI and/or HDMI inputs for testing purposes? The only lightweight monitors I can seem to find are USB-connected and powered and I would like to test the actual input device that people are currently using. Links to products are helpful and welcome!

A. 7 and 10 inch portable (12vDC) monitors for photography pros have HDMI inputs. They are less than $200 http://www.amazon.com/Lilliput-interface-dedicated-high-definition-Koolertron/dp/B0041I8UAO

http://www.amazon.com/Coby-TF-TV1925-19-Inch-720p-LCD/dp/B0037KLEKA/ref=dp_ob_title_ce newer model, less $ because no internal DVD player, no USB stick port, no SD card port.

Would you rather have an LCD or a PLASMA?
Q. I just recently bought a Samsung LCD 32" for nearly $700 and I absolutely love it. But why do people keep saying that Plasma tvs are better?

A. Alright first off you bought the best possible brand tv...so I applaud you there. First off there is a huge difference between the two! Plasmas have a glass diplay on the outside, where as LCDs dont...Plasmas actually have a glass tube running through it filled with plasma gas, the light is then projected through this gas giving you your image. LCD is an all around digital screen compared to that of a computer monitor. when deciding whether to get a plasma or lcd look at how much natural sunlight you have in the room you putting the tv in. If they're is alot of natural light stay away from plasma, you'll have a horrible glare. Plasma's are known for they're vividly bright colors but they fade quicker than LCD, but since you bought a samsung...you really don't have to worry about that Samsung is known for they're bright display no matter what type of TV you bought, where as Sony is known for Deep blacks and whiter whites...but if you have any doubts in which tv to buy go with LCD because they require less maintance long term and they're aren't as fragile...If you put a plasma tv on it's back this puts pressure on the glass tube and can crack it and once it leaks the gas your screen will be a nasty green color. They both have the same average life now even though LCD once had the edge, but they both last on average of 45,000 to 60,000 hours. But an LCD screen will look overall better during this long time period.

What is the best monitor for Graphic designers CRT , LED or LCD?

When buying a mac computer, do you have to buy the monitor and tower separate?
Q. I want to buy a mac computer. However I don't know if I have to buy the monitor and tower separate or together. Please help me out!

A. That depends on which Mac you are looking at buying. The iMac lineup has the monitor built-in, no need to buy a separate monitor. If you buy a MacBook or MacBook Pro (laptops), they also have built-in LCD displays. The only two Macs that do not come with their own displays are the Mac Mini (low-end) and MacPro (high-end for graphic design, science, and Windows-based hard-core gamers). Check out a local Apple Store or you can go to www.apple.com and look at each Mac model. If you are a new computer user or are novice to computers, I would recommend the iMacs. They are easy to set-up, have the monitor and speakers built-in, and come with basic productivity software and the mouse and keyboard as well.

How can I add speakers to an LCD monitor?

Q. Currently, my LCD monitor has no speakers. It has a VGA and DVI connection. I was going to connect an xbox to it with an HDMI to DVI connection but I was wondering how I would get sound. Any ideas? The only one I can think of using is Turtle Beach headsets to play sound through there but any other ways would help.

A. If you're using HDMI to DVI connection for your XBox, you'll need to use that little audio adapter thing that plugs into the other video port (not the HDMI port, but the other, larger one you'd use for the component video cable) for audio output to a pair of speakers or surround set.

What are the names of those cords that I can connect to an lcd monitor with speakers?

Q. I have an lcd monitor with speakers installed in them and currently have a cord that connects to my computer that displays everything, but with no sound. Whats the name of the cord that works for audio and visual? Sorry I'm completely ignorant on this topic

A. Err... well, you've asked the question incorrectly, so first I'll answer the question you asked, then I'll give you the answer you're actually looking for.

Coaxial and HDMI cables are typically what's used in consumer products. Both carry audio and video (HDMI > Coaxial).

However, neither of those are what you want.

What you have connecting your computer to your monitor is probably either a VGA or DVI cable (both used for video only, and both are superior to Coaxial and HDMI). What you should look for, however, near the base of your monitor is a small, round, 3.5mm standard audio jack. You can then buy these at Walmart even.

You can call these a "3.5mm audio cable", and here is a picture of one (first result on google images):

How to choose the right LCD monitor for gaming?

Q. I am going to be using the LCD monitor with my Xbox 360 and I am having difficulties on what I should look for.

I can't seem to figure out what specs I am looking for. Can anyone tell me about which contrast ratio, vertical/ horizontal refresh rates, resolution, and brightness I should look for on an LCD monitor?

Also would it be better with HDMI or no? If possible can you also list a few monitors you would recommend?

A. HDMI is good, but expensive. DVI will give you the same result for a lot less.

Refresh rates are going to be about the same for every brand. However, some top of the line have 240 Hz rates - very good.

Resolution: 1920x1200 is HD widescreen.

Contrast of 1000:1 or better.

Response: 5 ms or less

Dot Pitch: 0.28 or less

Brightness: 300 cd at a bare minimum, get the highest.

Is a faster monitor refresh rate better than a slower one?
Q. Is a faster monitor refresh rate better than a slower one?

I'm just after performance, increase my fps in games - nothing more.

Many thanks.

A. For FPS in games it is going to make no difference.

For usage, it depends.

You need a fast enough refresh rate that the screen will not flicker. For LCDs that is 60 Hz. For CRTs most people are happy at 75 Hz. Some need to run at 85 Hz.

You also want as low a refresh rate as possible. The electronics in the video card and the monitor have a limited slew rate - the time taken to change the voltage from one level to another level - So the shorter the pixel time the higher percentage of time that the electronics spends changing the voltage level and the shorter the time actually spent at the correct level. Higher vertical refresh rates or resolutions mean higher horizontal scan rates which means shorter pixel times.

The problems seen due to this is jitter in LCD monitors, and dim vertical lines and blurring of the image in CRT monitors.

Set LCDs to a 60 Hz refresh rate, and CRTs to 75 Hz. If you can still perceive flicker on the CRT when looking off to one side then up the refresh rate to 85 Hz.

Why can't my LCD monitor display its native resolution correctly?

Q. My widescreen LCD monitor does not display its native resolution of 1280x800 correctly. The display is crushed horizontally, and adjusting the size and position of my display using the monitor's controls is ineffective.

The monitor itself only seems to recognize 800x600, 1024x768 and 1280x800. Any other resolutions cause the monitor to set itself to one of the three mentioned (normally 800x600) and also causes scrolling to occur.

A. Try updating your graphics driver. With the right driver, you will usually have more than those 3 settings.

The sharpest image is displayed at native resolution. Most LCD screens can display at higher/lower than native resolution. However, a certain degree of pixel distortion sets in.

Can i turn my monitor into a device i can use to play xbox on?
Q. so ive got a pretty good size lcd monitor and a huge blurry crt tv and was wondering if there was any type of adapter i can put onto my monitor to allow me to basicly hook my jacks up to my monitor and play my xbox off of it.
I just spent $10 on the cables in this guide. if this doesn't work, I'm not going to like you very much.

I get $700 a month through ssi for my condition so i'm wondering if that's too expensive?

A. Too much detail....

It is overpriced
The CPU and a Single GTX670 or GTX680 video card are fine
You don't need 1000W PSU if you are running a single video card. Hard to read but maybe you are getting two cards. Don't know why you think you need to SLI two high end cards for a single 1920 x1080 monitor. Really, the difference between 130 fps and 140 fps is not going to make or break your gaming pleasure.
Why are you considering using a 32" TV as a monitor? You will be disappointed, it is fine for movie watching but it has low resolution for the size for computer use and you are going to have to sit 10 feet away from it.
You don't need water cooling if you are not overclocking intensively.
Do you need a wireless adapter in a desktop? Better performance if you hardware cable it to the router
Two SSD drives is kinda silly and more expensive than you need. SSDs don't help gameplay all that much. It will boot quickly, and load games quickly when you open them, but that's it. IF you must have an SSD, use it as a boot drive, and get a 500 GB 7200 RPM hard drive for your data drive.
The 16 GB RAM is OK if you plan to use Photoshop or do video editing or graphics or audio production, doesn;t do much for gaming over 8 GB

Bottom line, you can probably spend $1000 less for a good system, and put the money where it would be better used.

"No Signal" but computer tower is running normally?
Q. I recently built a computer and installed windows 7 (32-bit) on it and it worked fine for a few hours. Next time I turned it on it wouldnt register my keyboard or my 24" BENQ LED screen - The screen says "No signal" and my computer tower runs fine, the lights are on and the disc drive and fans work. sometimes it randomly registers the screen which makes me think it could be 2 things:
1) The Graphics card or motherboard is faulty
2) There is some kind of connection problem and sometimes a connection is made so that the screen and tower can communicate.

Please help!?

My specs are:
Motherboard - Gigabyte 990FXA-D3
CPU - AMD FX Black edition 6 -core
Graphics - ATI Radeon 6850
RAM - 2 x 4GB G-skill DDR3
I have tried a different screen and the same problem happens, I have checked both the pins on the DVI cable to see if they are misaligned I also tried VGA and still nothing. Inside the computer I checked that everything was connected tighty. My graphics card is PCIE so theres no onboard graphics, the one I have slots in.

A. Sounds like a display issue.

When you do get the screen to work, do you see the Windows background or is it a boot screen?

Do you have a video card built into the motherboard or is it a PCI-E card which slots into the motherboard?

couple of basic things to check first are these:

1. Unplug all power and data cables from the screen. Check that the connection pins at each end of the cable are not bent or misaligned.

2. Reseat the cables back into place and make sure they are connected and tight. Same goes for the power cable.

Another thing you can try is to connect another monitor to the computer and see what happens. If it does the same thing then you have a cable or hardware problem with the VGA port.

If it works then you have a problem with your LCD screen.

Edit: Monday 23 Jan 2012

Well you might have a different problem altogether.

Take out the video card and turn the computer on without it connected. You should get "Post Beep" error from the motherboard (These are audible sounds coming from the system speaker)

If not. Shutdown and remove the RAM and turn the PC back on again. Again, you should get "Post Beep" errors (Although this will be a different sequence of audible sounds)

If not then your motherboaurd and possibly the CPU has failed and not the video card (Although I would still have it checked)

If you do get post beep errors with the video card removed but no display when it is installed, then the video card has failed and will need to be replaced.

Cheers,

Rob

How do you connect your ps3 to your lcd computer monitor to play games?

Q. I would like to play ps3 games in full hd but I don't have enough money to cough up for a new hdtv. I have a VH242H Asus LCD monitor(24 inches). Do you need an hdmi to dvi cable? or can you connect it using hdmi directly since my monitor has an hdmi port. How do acquire audio?

A. you can use a HDMI cable to your computer. Once it starts up it should automatically reset the settings, or you can go to the settings to adjust them.

Audio will be set up after you have done the video settings on your PS3 (like right after so they arn't seperate) or they should automatically be done.

what's the difference between ghosting and motion blur on an LCD monitor?
Q. I think my LCD monitor has it bad while playing games with a response time of 25ms, NEC LCD 1980sxi.

A. Yeah, that's pretty low-spec for a monitor. motion blur should not affect you when you're simply chaning your point of view. Also, motion blur is a desirable effect while ghosting is not.

How good is the compaq presario sr5710f?
Q. I am looking for something under 500 dollars and this one caught my eye. Is it a decent computer for gaming, etc.?

A. Current Dell deals,

http://www.techbargains.com/dellcoupons.cfm

For example, one current sale is a Dell Vostro 220, with an E7500 CPU (Core 2 Duo 2.93 GHz) and 22" LCD monitor for $409,

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&kc=&oc=brcwa1p&dgc=BF&cid=27740&lid=1204709&acd=10689810-227502-A11A0C173848E1A01173691A0

The Vostro 220 comes with a smallish 300W power supply (with only 18A on a single +12V rail), but I suspect this low powered version 9600GT would still run. You would just have to try it, and see how stable it is. (If it's not 100% stable, you would need to upgrade the power supply as well, for about $50 more.)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130485

Considering the price range, an E7500 CPU and 9600GT video card would run games quite well.

Yes, I've heard of Steam. I'm looking for a list or any recommendations of games I can run at the moment, yes I know this graphics card is horrible and I'm going to try to add on a different card, but in the meantime I'd like to know what I can run at the moment.

A. Nothing close to high end. You have no video card, only Intel integrated graphics

If you want to play modern games, you need to buy and install a decent video card (and most likely the power supply too)

Need help configuring LCD HDMI Dual View?
Q. I've connected my laptop to my LCD TV and want my TV to display one thing and my monitor to display another. When I connect to the Dual View mode, my monitor displays one of the things I need to see, but the TV displays the DESKTOP behind what is on my laptop screen. This makes no sense to me. There has to be a way to configure it in order to to have a true dual view that I need. Any suggestions?

A. Hello, If you want the display to be just on one screen, you will need to go to your computers' Display Settings which can be accessed by right clicking on your desktop and personalize your display or through the control panel->Appearance and Personalization-> Display. In the settings, for the multiple display option, select "Display desktop only on 1" or "Display desktop only on 2" depending on which monitor is 1 or 2. Here are some websites that will help.

Q. The LCD TV in my room has the same screen the LCD monitor on the computer I am using right now has.
There is a plasma TV in the living room and I the screen feels and looks totally different.

A. The technology used for creating the image in a LCD and a Plasma is different, hence why the picture would indeed look different, there are pro's and con's to each technology.

What laptop is best used to install graphic design software?

Q. What laptop computer is best for installing adobe photoshop, premiere, alias maya, etc, used for graphic design? i'm planning to buy one so that i'll be able to work while on the road.
between Dell, Fujitsu and Neo, which laptop is best for installing graphic design software like adobe photoshop, premeire and Alias Maya?

A. I would never recommend a portable system for graphics purposes. The real problem is that the size of the monitor is severely limited, making real, detailed graphics work more difficult.

But, that is just my opinion. I also recognize that there are a lot of legitimate reasons some people NEED to install graphics apps into a laptop or notebook. For examples, folks that can't afford to maintain two separate systems, a desktop and a portable. There are students that need to keep their schoolwork, homework and other accoutrements at their side 24/7. And, such as yourself that will be doing work on the road.

So, with that, the only advice I can offer is to buy the one with the best raw processor speed, the most ram and the biggest hard drive you can afford. If you will also be interfacing with other units, especially with your home desktop, you will need connectivity or some other way of transfering data. I suggest you remain versitile by making sure your portable has a fast USB connection and a good CD or DVD burner. And of those two, I recommend the DVD burner because you can use it to back up and archive your hard drive. Graphics take up a LOT of space, so even the big hard drives fill up fast and you don't want old files clogging up your system.

And finally, what I think might be the most important feature: Get the one with the BIGGEST monitor you can find. You are NEVER going to get a good color match for print jobs with LCD screens, so, don't worry about that. You will need a BIG, bright screen to work with. You can always make color adjustments later, when getting ready to print.

how to tilt the laptop screen to get true color in photography?
Q. I'm just starting out in learning photoshop to edit my photos. I only have a laptop and depending on how far forward or backward I put the screen it changes the colors dramatically. At what position should the screen be to show the true color so that it prints the same as I see it on the screen. FYI I have already color calibrated. Thanks!

A. Only when you're dead square onto it will the colour be right, you can always connect an old big, heavy, bulky CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitor to it and not have any problems very cheaply, even free these days. Calibrated it will give you truer, brighter colour.

You have to spend a lot of money to get even close the the accuracy and quality of the CRT image with an LCD monitor.

Why do the 360 graphics look mediocre ?

Q. I have a 19" widescreen HD LCD monitor. and I'm that impressed by the 360 graphics.

A. My guess is because you may be a computer gamer. The 360 and the PS3 have finally caught up with the graphics that a decent PC has had for quite some time. I wasn't impressed at first either, but that was before I played Gears of War. You also have to remember that game developers have not learned the full potiential of the system yet and as time passes the games will get better and more impressive.

Electronic Service Manual - Which Site Has Service Manuals For LCD Monitors In One Place?
Q.

A. It's hard to find specific manuals with a simple search, but you can try Jestine Yong's LCD site for a good starting point. It's a troubleshooting site with Benq & Acer's electronic service manual, though you can find manuals for other brands as well (Dell, HP, Panasonic, Samsung). The developer of the site is an LCD technician who runs courses in electronics & hardware. He's known worldwide for his troubleshooting skills.
