can't set lcd monitor to highest refresh rate on alienware m11xr2?

Q. i have new lcd monitor LG 2241A 22inch. i have alienware m11xr2. i connected the laptop to lcd monitor using HDMI cable. i installed the driver first. it worked, but only able to set the refresh rate to 25Hz at 1920x1080.

why can't i set it to 60Hz? do i need to install any?

A. Drop resolution to make the refresh rate higher. This shows the limit of the video chipset in the laptop:

Monitor Refresh Rate?
Q. Ok, I used to have an old computer that had windows XP and a Generic non-PnP Monitor. In the settings, it showed I could only put the monitor's refresh rate up to 60Hz. I later bought a new computer with a much better CPU & GPU., but I am still using the same monitor. Now, It shows that I can put the refresh rate up to 170Hz! However, I still cannot check the "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" option, though before 170 Hz never showed up on the list at all.

-Can I actually increase it up to 170hz (doubt it)?
-If not, how could I find out how much I can increase it to?

A. Computer monitors often have a "maximum refresh rate" listed in their technical specifications. Google the make and model. This number, measured in hertz (Hz), determines how many times the screen is redrawn each second. Typical refresh rates for CRT monitors include 60, 75, and 85 Hz. Some monitors support refresh rates of over 100 Hz.

The higher the refresh rate, the less image flicker you will notice on the screen. Typically a refresh rate of less than 60 Hz will produce noticeable flicker, meaning you can tell the screen is being redrawn instead of seeing a constant image. If the refresh rate is too slow, this flicker can be hard on your eyes and may cause them to tire quickly. As if sitting at a computer for several hours wasn't hard enough!

To avoid flicker, you should set your monitor to use the maximum refresh rate possible. This setting is found in the Monitors control panel in Windows and the Displays system preference in Mac OS X. While 60 Hz is considered a good refresh rate, some people will find that 85 Hz is significantly better.

The maximum refresh rate is determined by three factors: 1) The rate your video card supports, 2) the rate your monitor supports, and 3) the resolution your monitor is set at. Lower resolutions (i.e. 800x600) typically support higher refresh rates than higher resolutions (i.e. 1600x1200).

If you have an LCD monitor, you may not be able to adjust the refresh rate. This is because most LCD monitors come with a standard refresh rate that is well above the "flicker" point. LCD monitors produce less flicker than CRT monitors because the pixels on an LCD screen stay lit longer than CRT monitors before they noticeably fade.

Whats a good refresh rate for a 28" LCD monitor?

Q. I have a 28" LCD monitor for my PC, and some games I play get a little blurry when the background turns. Could this be due to refresh rate?

What is the best refresh rate available, for a top of the line LCD?

A. EVERY LCD monitor has a default (recommended) resolution
and refresh rate. Anything else makes it work harder and
internally re-size/convert things. (Often with blurry results.)
Either look up the settings for your monitor model, or
see if any of the settings offer to return it to defaults.
Do this while using it in the mode you will use the most.
(Like while the game software is active.)


Why are PC LCD Monitor frequency/refresh rates so far behind the 120/240/320 frequencies offered for HDTV?
Q. In CRT days, the monitors were always way ahead of TV's, but now looking into a new PC Monitor, the standard for LCD still seems to be 60Hz, why is it taking so long for the PC LCD Market to catch up to the latest 120+ Hz frequencies that the latest LCD HDTV's offer?

A. For starters, LCD monitors are far more complicated than a TV that only has to display one resolution. Additionally, TVs are in an entirely different price bracket than most LCD monitors. 120Hz LCD monitors exist though.

What is the significant of monitor resolution refresh rate?

Q. I try to set my monitor to different resolution, but with the same supported resolution, there are a few "refresh rate" settings associated to it. I just wonder what is the significant of monitor resolution refresh rate? If I set the "wrong" refresh rate, will it do any damage to the monitor? If higher the refresh rate, will it produce better picture quality?

A. Refresh rate depends on the monitor's make, monitor's resolution, video card (if installed) or on-board video chip (if included in the motherboard).

You should consult display [monitor] and video card manuals before changing the settings to determine the supported refresh rates. Most users swear that increased refresh rate decreases flickering, thus reducing eye strain due to better picture quality. You also want as low a refresh rate as possible. The electronics in the video card and the monitor have a limited slew rate - the time taken to change the voltage from one level to another level - So the shorter the pixel time the higher percentage of time that the electronics spends changing the voltage level and the shorter the time actually spent at the correct level. Higher vertical refresh rates or resolutions mean higher horizontal scan rates which means shorter pixel times.

The problems seen due to this is jitter in LCD monitors, and dim vertical lines and blurring of the image in CRT monitors.


Set LCDs to a 60 Hz refresh rate, and CRTs to 75 Hz. If you can still perceive flicker on the CRT when looking off to one side then up the refresh rate to 85 Hz.

How can i change the refresh rate of my monitor?

Q. I had disconnected my lcd monitor from my tower for a while, then when i connected it again it only worked in safe mode. Someone told me the solution is to set my monior on 60Hz but in safe mode icant do this and the biggest problem is that i connected a crt monitor to solve the issue and i saw that there is no option to change the refresh rate in normal mode too.

Can a flatscreen LCD monitor with a low refresh rate cause blindness?

Q. My brother has been convinced (by a computer salesperson, surprise surprise) that his flatscreen LCD computer monitor is going to cause him to go blind because its a couple of years old and has a slower refresh rate. My husband and I think thats bunk and that the salesperson is trying to pull one over on him. Anyone know for sure?

I would report that salesperson ... he's trying to use scare tactics to make a sale ... the one thing that was noticeable about early LCD monitors with slow refresh rates was that they tended to "flicker" a little under florescent lighting which in some cases caused headaches ... but if this isn't a problem with your brothers ... use the old adage ... if it aint broke don't fix it


What is the best frame refresh rate for a 19" LCD wide screen monitor?
Q. I just purchased a new AOC 19" LCD widescreen monitor for my pc, and every view seconds I see diagonal lines over the screen. Should I change the refresh rate of the screen or is it something else?

A. you should check in the manual, or on the box, you may need to install the drivers in some cases..

the manual should have the best settings "resolution, refresh rate etc" for your monitor.
