Can I use a LCD TV as a monitor for a mini-mac?

Q. My friend has linked up his PC to his TV - instead of having a monitor -

I'm just about to buy a LCD TV and wondered if i could then buy a mini mac and then use the tv as a monitor

- Is this possible?
- Do I need to buy a TV with a specific function?

Thanks!

A. Get a TV with HDMI inputs; most new HD LCD TV's have this. You then need to get a DVI to HDMI cable to connect your Mac to the TV.

Otherwise, you could get a TV with VGA input and get a DVI to VGA adapter to connect your Mac to the TV. Only go this route if HDMI is not available as this will not yield the best results.

Unsupported mode LCD monitor?
Q. When I hooked up an LCD monitor to my Mac Pro, I get and unsupported mode message on the screen. I've been using a different monitor up to this point, but I moved to a different city for school and left the other (much larger and heavier) monitor behind. I've done some extensive research into the problem, and the most likely cause seems to be that I was using a screen resolution with my other monitor that isn't supported by this one.

I need to know how to reset the resolution even though I can't see what I'm doing thanks to the "unsupported mode" message. I could try rebooting the computer in safe mode, but if the screen stays blank, how will I know if it is in safe mode and it didn't work, or if it hasn't finished booting yet?

A. You are likely to have to manually set the screen up from the video settings. This will require being able to get the screen working first. Try safe mode as it will at worst report the same problem. It should only disable the drivers for the screen and you should then be able to see it. Alternatively borrow a monitor which will run, and use that to set basic screen resolution and color. You should then be able to use your current monitor to set it up within sensible range.

LCD computer monitors and eye strain?

Q. have used CRT monitors on my pc's 4ever, I just bought an LCD 22" widescreen 5 days ago, heres the link http://www.abt.com/product/34518.html

I like the monitor, it has awsome color and clarity, my problem is, My eyes seem to be straining bad, almost feels like "burning" after 2 or so hours, my eyes get real tired, I dont recall having this on my crt, I have played with the settings like crazy, and it seems even with bright and contrast turned down, I still have it, The screen is matte, (not glossy) shoul i try to find a glossy one? heres a link to another model, its almost the EXACT same as what I got only it has a glossy screen http://www.abt.com/product/34510.html

Should I switch it to the glossy one? or will that have bad glare?

A. Turn up the refresh rate up to 70Hz if possible, 60Hz is the Default setting and alot people will get eye strain I get it on CRT monitors.

Monitor refresh rate.?
Q. I just got a new laptop Dell Latitude E6400 and a new Dell monitor E2209W and the problem Im having is that the monitor set-up is hurting my eyes.
I installed the driver from the cd (came with the monitor) and tried changing to different settings and one of the things I see is that for the refresh rate it only goes up to 60 hertz.

I've now disconnected the monitor and Im using the laptop screen.

Any ideas ?

thanks again.

A. 60hz (or 59, which is usually the default) is fast enough for an lcd monitor. [A clarification on the other post: LCD monitors do have a refresh rate, it just isn't as important (and doesn't need to be as fast) as CRT monitors because LCDs only change the pixels that have changed, where CRT monitors redraw the entire image every refresh cycle.] Make sure you are using it at it's native resolution (if the laptop screen and the external monitor show the same screen, the external monitor is reduced to the resolution of the laptop's screen, which won't look good). If you want to use both screens, you can set them up to display two different images (Fn F7 until they're both on, then right click, personalize, display settings, etc).
If you are just using the external monitor, it should default to the native resolution (the highest you can set it to), but check under display settings to make sure.
If it's running at it's native resolution and 60hz, it should look fine.
Make sure you run the auto adjust (press the menu button on the monitor, scroll over to auto-adjust, and select it). Also make sure the vga cable is firmly attached and doesn't run close to the power cord (If your using dvi or hdmi, you shouldn't have to worry about it).

How can I change the resolution on the mame emulator?

Q. It seems that the default resolution for the emulator is a little blurry. I tried messing the options but didn't find anything that would let me make the picture more pixelated/grainy. Anyone find anything that I may have looked over? Oh, I am using a lcd moniter.

thanks

A. 1 are you using a video card?
2 are you speaking all games in general or specific games?
3 what size monitor are you using?

OKay generally you might change the monitor res or the videocards res. In a lot of the older games it has to do with the video freq. You need to also remember that MAME is an emulator and could be combining backgrounds, foregrounds and the game. (Bezels).

I'll give you more info soon.

help planing out mame cabinet.?
Q. im new to building my own arcade cabinet. are there any tips that anyone wishes to share to a bignner? like where to shop? safty precautions? or how much money and time and space it could take up?

A. I am assuming you are building from scratch. Best advice is plan, measure twice, cut once, Use quality controls, and Take Your Time.

Let me start off by saying the end product is what every thing is based on:

Money:
The wood: What you use to make the cabinet needs to be sturdy and one side finished for a good look. (I have used HDO plywood in the past very good product http://www.freemansupply.com/HDOFirPlywood.htm)
The computer: It needs to be fast enough to run the games you wish to play. You can go overboard here and just buy to fast of a cpu that you just didn't need. Remember hard drive space.
The monitor: This can very also. Mainly 3 types to use. 1 a CRT type like the original arcade games used. 2 a flat screen plasma or lcd TV/Monitor. and 3 a regular TV 20+ inch. (Note that orientation is a factor also for the install and overall size.)
The controls: You will need to know how many buttons, joysticks, rollers, spinners, ect you will need for the games you will have loaded. The control panel is what I always built my Cabinets around. I determined How many player and the needed controls and placement. Made a mock up with cardboard to see the size and function ability of the controls. Knowing this size allowed me to know how wide the cabinet would be and then the size of the monitor. Also it showed what king of hardware I needed to connect the controllers to the computer.
The Hardware: You will need wire and at least one ipac/jpac. I always added two fans, a power strip, lighting, speakers, wireless keyboard and mouse.
Cost: from scratch can run from as low as $800 to over $2000 from my experience.

Time:
As stated before TAKE YOUR TIME! plan, plan, plan. I never finished one on a set time schedules, but did make goal points.
1 acquire the computer, hardware, and controls.
2 while still acquiring parts, start design as mock build ups.
3 acquire the wood and other materials to assemble the cabinet.
4 build the cabinet.
5 build the control panel.
6 install the monitor.
7 install the wiring
8 Install the CPU
Not really that easy but generally the order.

Space?: To build? I use an 8x10 Shed. Cabinet size, I've only made one monster that was almost 4foot wide and deep. I built one that was a sit down that was two parts and they pinned together and took up about 3.5 wide and 7 foot long. But most are gust over 2 foot wide and just under 3 foot deep. All sizes are footprint size, control panels not added.

Here is a great resource sight for a lot of you needs when building. http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?board=1

Just got hd lcd monitor want to use it as tv.?

Q. Hey lol first off ill start by saying im not very technical when it comes to this stuff, but basically my buddy justbought a brand new hd tv (huge) for his ps3 and well as just tv in general, well on the road he used a westing house l2410nm lcd monitor for his ps3, but since he got that he gave it to me. I don't want to use it as just a ps3 hook up, but also would like to use it as my general purpose tv. Somone told me get tv tuner and somone said get hd cable box... not quite sure what each is and their price or how i use them could anyone point me in the right direction and elaborate more on what i need to do. ( i have no intentions of using the monitor for my comp cause i have a laptop. Thanks.

A. I Checked out your monitor at the manufacturers website, and I looked at all the ports it has. I hate to have to put anyone down, but the post on C Net tells you a way that works on all monitors, but it really difficult and requires a desktop computer. In your case you will need some sort of a conversion box if you do not have one. If you want HDTV, you will have to subscribe for HD service and the box comes with it. Below are all the ways you can have television:

Depending on how you get your television, there is a few ways you can hook it up.

If you have tivo or another DVR, or if you have a VCR or DVD recorder that you use to record TV, you can go ahead and set up your monitor without a box as mentioned in the end of this answer.

If you pay for your TV service you either have cable or satellite, you will need a set top box (a box with its own remote, in some cases the remote may also work for you TV), if you do not have one, you could call your service provider for one.

If you do not pay to watch tv, you either have an antenna, or cable provided by an apartment or office, If you have an antenna, you need to buy a digital converter box if you do not have one already. You will need to buy one if you have an antenna anyway because tv goes digital in June. If you have cable, ask the person who pays for it for a set top box.

Once you get a set top box, or a digital converter box, if you do not have one already, there are a couple of ways to hook it up:

The easiest way is to use a composite cable( It is made up of a yellow cable, a red cable, and a white cable, and almost everything is compatible with it) and just plug in each cable into the ports on your box and monitor.

If you want better image quality, you can use a component cable or an hdmi cable if the box has the ports for it. An HDMI cable has one plug, and the port is rectangular, with no screws, you just plug it in, A component cable has 5 plugs, Red, White, another Red, Green, and a blue one, one pair of red and white should be seperated, or have somthing different about it.

Gateway FPD1975W 19-inch HD LCD Monitor?
Q. it says it comes with 4 usb ports on the side. My question is what do you use those usb connectors for thanks

It is coming with the gateway computer i bought

A. It does come 4 USB ports but you use those ports for anything flash drives external drives and they are high speed also if it doesn't come with a cable high speed cable to connect the monitor to the computer it should take a printer USB cable so if you have you can use it or go to office depot and get one there.

I just bought an xbox 360 arcade, what components will i need to play hi-def gaming on my 24 asus lcd monitor?

Q.

A. Yea I bought one bc I was short on cash and you can basically turn it into an elite i bought the 120gig hard drive and HDMI cable. You'll just need to get an HDMI cable for it from a store like Walmart or bestbuy. Unless the monitor doesnt have the correct hook up then more than likely you'll need an S-video cable or a converter.

Connecting Xbox 360(Arcade version) to PC monitor.?
Q. Im thinking about buying a xbox, but I have no money for a TV.
I need to use my PC monitor.

My monitor has 1 DVI-D port and 1 VGA port
My graphic card is an ATI radeaon 4870(It has 2 DVI)

Im planning on buy the ARCADE version(I have no idea what kind of connector is has)

Can I plug it to my computers monitor?
If so, how do I so?
Will the picture of my monitor going to be ugly or very good?

Thanks

A. The arcade only comes with the standard component cables (Yellow, Red, White.) So you wouldn't be able to connect it off the bat to your monitor.

You would need to buy the VGA cable. Which, unless you have a 30" plus monitor, then you wont really notice a difference in quality of picture from DVI. As VGA is capable of 720p and 1080i. It's just that the cable is an analog format so the signal is converted from digital, to analog and back to digital, which does degrade the quality a bit. Though to a normal eye, it's only noticeable on a larger screen.

http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-VGA-HD-AV-Cable/dp/B000B6MLTG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1224515944&sr=1-1
I used this cable for a while when I used a 25" LCD for both a secondary computer monitor and for my xbox. Worked great and the picture quality was great.

Though, unless your monitor has speakers you wont have any sound.
If you have an external speaker system, then you need to run the red and white audio cables from the VGA adapter to it.

Alternatively if you have an line-in jack on your computer and a compatible audio card, then you can buy an RCA to 3.5mm converter that will take those red and white audio cables and make it usable to a standard headphone jack.

http://www.deepsurplus.com/Home-Theater-Audio-Video_2/3-5-Stereo-Plug-to-2-3-5-Stereo-Jacks-Shielded-Y-Cable/6-3-5-Stereo-Plug-to-2-3-5-Stereo-Jacks-Shielded-Y-Cable

Which then will allow you to plug it in on a line-in connection on a computer. Which then through some work around in your sound settings you can have the xbox play through your PC speakers.

Hope this helps

LCD monitor question?

Q. I've got a monitor that slowly got worse. First when you just barely would touch it, it would lose signal. That was fixed by getting a new VGA cable. Now a week later, it will hold a picture for about three seconds after you cut the monitor on, then it will go black. The power light stays green though. Is it trash? It's a Dell 17in. 3 years old.

A. We have this often at work - especially in computer labs where they're left on all day/every day. It sounds like the monitor is defective. If you put a lot of light on it at different angles, can you see a very very dim picture? That's what ours do sometimes, it means the backlight has failed.

The easiest sure-fire test is to borrow someone else's monitor and try it on your computer - if another monitor works on your computer; and yours has the same problem on another computer...it's definately a bad LCD nomater what Dell or anyone says.

If it's under warranty, call Dell and complain (maybe do that anyways)...if it's not under warranty go to the office store and get a new one that's NOT made by Dell...you could upgrade to a newer/bigger one at the same time if you like and probably get it cheaper than buying from Dell.

Brand doesn't matter unless you have a personal preference (I've had good luck LG brand computer LCDs, TVs, and cell-phones)

A tip, have your computer go to standby or hibernate when it's been left alone for a while - that way the LCD will go to power-saver and last longer...at a minimum, set the monitor to turn off after X minutes of inactivity. This option is under Control Panel > Power Options.

I personally believe turning off the LCD when it's not in use (you know how the power light goes from green to orange...it's not really all the way off) helps too but I have no evidance to back that up - although it will save a little on electricity so that's reason enough for me.

which computer LCD monitors won't harm your eyes so you can stare at it for hours on end?
Q. I am looking for a LCD monitor for my computer so that I can do homework (mainly for using office applications) that won't strain my eyes. At my university those computer monitor are pretty kind to my eyes. Meaning I can stare at them for hours and hours before I feel any strain or hurt to my eyes. However it only takes around 45 minutes for my eyes to feel strained when starring at my LCD monitor, forcing me to take a break. Funny thing is that I don't usually feel a thing when I watch movies on it at home. What are some important things to consider when buying another monitor that 'would be kind to my eyes' and what is the maximum resolution for an LCD monitor that I should aim for so I can run my graphic card 'Nvidia 1792MB GTX 295' at it's full potential

A. most gamers i know stare at the monitor concentrating hard
instead of looking blink and look away now and again
get yourself a 24" or 26" as they are most likely going to be 1920 x 1080 or 1200
and have a nice size screen
LG ViewSonic samsung proview all do good monitors

Gaming monitor: LCD or LED?

Q.

A. Here are the differences-
LED: A thinner monitor, no differences in resolution to LCD.
LCD: A thicker monitor, no differences in resolution to LED.

How Good is LED monitor Compare to LCD Monitor For photo Editing and Gaming?
Q. I have thinking to Purchase LED or LCD monitor monitor for my photo editing purpose but also for GAming, but my question which are the best for editing?

A. For those who don't know, LED monitors are just LCD monitors that use bright white LEDs instead of fluorescent bulbs as the backlight.

The main advantage of LED monitors is that they consume much less power than traditional monitors. They can also have improved contrast ratios since LEDs can be dimmed over a wider range of brightness (the backlight is dimmed when displaying dark colors).

For accurate color reproduction when photo editing, either LED or LCD technology would be fine. The best monitor for the job would depend on other factors such as panel type. A more expensive IPS panel would be better than a cheaper TN panel that would have significant color shifting when the viewing angle changed.

Best monitor for photo editing?
Q. I'm a photographer and looking to purchase a new monitor for photo editing to plug into my laptop. What do you recommend?

A. Due in part to Adobe, and their Photoshop software, digital photography has grown with tremendous celerity over the past decade. Computer monitor technology for editing and viewing photos is constantly advancing. CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors are the relic of the industry, while LCD (liquid crystal display) monitors make up the bulk of products used world-wide today. There are four main types of LCD panels, though IPS (in-plane switching) monitors are likely used in most photography schools.

Twisted Nematic

These products are typically cheaper to make, and are widely used by most manufacturers. TN monitors represent 6-bits of color, which is among the lowest color accuracy of LCD products. The angles of view are limited; the picture clarity diminishes when looking from side or top angles. The refresh rate of TN LCD monitors, which refers to the number of frames drawn of a given image per second, is under six miliseconds, fast enough to warrant popularity in the tech fields, gaming more than photography.

Multi-Domain Vertical Alignment

MVA monitors are a mid-range product that offer 8-bit color range, and brightness of a higher grade than TN models. MVA technology tilts the crystals in the display at different positions, creating viewing angles that are wider than TN, though not as wide as those found in IPS models. The refresh rate of a MVA product is fast and similar to that of a TN model. MVA panels are versatile and fast, suitable for photography, or animation and programming.

Patterned Vertical Alignment

PVA technology is in the same class of MVA, offering wide viewing angles and

8-bit color reproduction. The contrast ratio in PVA monitors is higher than that of TN or MVA products. Some manufacturers offer Super Patterned Vertical Alignment Technology (S-PVA), with upgraded 10-bit and 16-bit color displays. This level of color reproduction ability makes an S-PVA monitor more suitable for photography and design.

In-Plane Switching

IPS monitors are of the more expensive, professional class of photography monitors. The range of colors represented in IPS products is greater and fuller due to a true 8-bit color display. Some models are limited by slower refresh rates. The angles of view in IPS monitors are unparalleled by any other LCD panel in their wideness, making them the standard for photography and graphic design. Apple is one company that uses IPS technology in their high-performance machines.

Looking for a great led tv for my first apartment!!xD?

Q. Hi thanks for responding, I'm looking for a 46" led-lcd tv for around 800 or below. I know quite a bit about tvs and monitors from gaming but there are so many out there I can't decide. Please give your opinion about
-brand
-quality
-specs/features
-price

This will be primarily used for television, movies and some single player Xbox games. Thanks again!!!

A. Look at smart tv's get the otpion to get apps etc most are 3d ready. start herehttp://www.gadgetrophy.com/2011/11/3d-smart-televisions-start-gaining-momentum.html

Looking for new tv 3DDDD?
Q. Looking for a new tv, 50-60" but dont really know which brands, types, and sizes are the best for their money. Any suggestions would be great, thanks =)

A. Well depends what you will use it for ,if you play a lot of games ,then you want an LCD or LED ,but if you want it for movies and regular TV then a plasma is the way to go ,plasmas have a better picture and deeper colors than the LCD or LED ,but if you are using it for games or as a PC monitor ,it's going to leave burn marks on the screen. Another thing is that LED ,LCD use less power than plasmas, though the new ones are more energy efficient. I would also wait til black friday to make a purchase because that's the time when they're usually cheaper. From what I've seen online and from what people tell me the best plasmas in 3D right now are the Panasonic 2011 and 2012 models ,they have the best picture of all the other plasmas ,even better than the leading Samsung and I think some of them have the bundle that comes with the free glasses. The best LED ,LCD are the ,the Samsung D8000 or the Sony KDLH850 series, because of the picture and features ,there's another also the Sharp Elite pro ,but that's like 4000+ dollars. But I would advice you to go to cnet.com and see the TV reviews for yourself. http://reviews.cnet.com/tvs/#sort=edRating7%20desc

Good luck.

difference Between lcd and led monitors?

Q. where can i find a full list of differences Between them i need to make a project so i need loots of Information

A. lcd is liquid crystal display, the kind of screen. led is light emmiting diode, like an led torch. so an led screen simply has lights behind the screen to make it brighter

LCD or LED pc monitor for gaming?
Q. I plan on getting a 30' monitor which one LCD or LED for gaming?

A. They will both be LCD - that's the display technology that all flatscreen monitors use.
LED or not is to do with the backlighting.

The LED one uses LED lights as the backlight
The non-LED one used a fluorescent light as the backlight.

It is more important to choose one with a good contrast ratio and fast reponse time.
Monitors with slow response times will show a ghosted blurry image in fast moving screen action. Monitors with low contrast ratio will have blacks that are dark grey and colours that look washed out.

Ideally you want a high contrast ratio, a fast response time and LED backlight.

which is the best inexpensive LCD monitor for video editing.?

Q. I am about to purchase a larger monitor than my current 17 inch CRT monitor. I would like to change to a 19 or 20 inch LCD. The main use would be for photo editing using adobe photoshop CS and video editing using Adobe elements

A. Well the monitiors that I use with my Mac G5 are from Sams Club. I bought the Samsung Sync Master916v. I set them as a Dual Display setup side by side and they work GREAT. To my knowledge they were less then $300.00 each. Plus they come with a full 1 year return policy from Sams not including the warranty from Samsung..

How do I hook up 2 LCD's for trading in the markets?
Q. Hi, I got 2 brand new LCD monitors. Now I want to hook them up for trading. How do I do this? Am I going to need 2 separate video cards? I want the displays to show different information on each screens - not share a desktop.
My video card doesn't have two video outs. It's about 3 years old. I can't afford a new desktop. Anything I can do with what I already have?
I don't have PCI-E on this desktop, but maybe AGP - have to check. If I don't have PCI-E or AGP, am I needing to fork out some cash for a new desktop? (Major ouch)

A. You need a video card that can support two monitors.

The majority of current video cards out there support dual monitors-- They have two video output jacks, either two DVI, or one DVI / one VGA.

If all you are going to do is run your online trading software, then just get something like this if you have PCI Express: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161219

Or something like this if you have AGP: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102814

With a video card that supports two monitors, all you have to do is go into Display Properties in Windows and set it to run in extended desktop mode, and the two monitors will be able to display different information on each screen.

EDITED TO ADD: If your computer has a PCI Express 16x slot or an AGP slot, you don't need a new computer. Just buy a new video card. Both video cards I linked to for you cost under $100. About what you would pay for a single share of AAPL or IBM. :-D

Could you advice me LCD monitor which would cost 300~500$ - 19"?

Q.

A. $ US:

There are a lot there less than $300.

What's the difference between these two monitors?
Q. I've tested out to different monitors SEPARATELY with a DVI cable on my computer.

They are both 23" Dell LED monitors. One gives exceptional picture quality. The other one is good, but just not as a bright nad vivid, though they are on the exact same settings as far as brightness, contrast, etc.

The first one is:
Dell S2340M 23 Flat Panel HD LED Monitor (1920x1080)

Specs:
Brand: Dell
Case Count: 1
Color: Black
Contrast Ratio to 1: 1,000
Depth: 6.92 in.
Display Type: LED
Height: 15.7 in.
Number of HDMI Inputs: 1
Resolution: 1080p
Response Time: 7 Milliseconds
Screen Aspect Ratio: 16:9
Screen Brightness: 250 Nit
Screen Size: 23 in.
Viewing Angle (Horizontal): 178 Degree
Viewing Angle (Vertical): 178 Degree
Wattage: 19 W

I've found this one to be absolutley excellent. The display output is very vivid and bright. I was quite impressed.

So what I don't understand how come the second one isn't as great, the second one being as follows, advertised as:

What am I missing?
Thanks.

At first I hooked them up as dual monitors, one with a DVI connection and the other HDMI. And that's when I noticed the stark difference.

So, then I thought maybe it had something to do with my graphics card. So as a test, I tested out the second monitor separately with just the DVI cable, no other monitor hooked up. But it still showed the same quality. I even used the VGA cable, and still it looked the same to me!

I even got someone else to look at it, to see what I was seeing, and we both noticed the difference. I adjusted the color brightness, contrast, color saturation, etc, but that didn't help any. And yes, all under the same lighting conditions.

So perhaps, you're right, something about the specs that's not listed or something with the viewing angles. I have no idea. It doesn't make sense to me.
Thanks.

A. The difference is panel type, which is what you should focus on when choosing a monitor. Most of the specs and features listed for monitors are just marketing gimmicks.

The S2340M uses a IPS panel and the ST2321L a TN panel. IPS panels are mainly used in premium displays and offer the best viewing angles and color reproduction of any other LCD panel type. TN panels are just the opposite, with narrow viewing angles and a limited color gamut.

Will a V7 D19W12-N6 19" Widescreen LCD Monitor connect to a mac book pro laptop?
Q.

A. According to the product specifications for that monitor, it has a DVI port.

To connect it to the older Macbook Pro that has a full-sized DVI port, all you will need is a standard DVI monitor cable.

To connect it to the newer Macbook Pro that has a miniDisplayPort jack, you will need a miniDisplayPort-to-DVI adapter, and a standard DVI monitor cable.

So find out which Macbook Pro you got.

which is the best inexpensive LCD monitor for video editing.?

Plus they come with a full 1 year return policy from Sams not including the warranty from Samsung..

having problems with monitor?
Q. once in a while my computer monitor starts making a clicking noise and the screen flickers when it is shut down for a while and i turn it back on it works fine does anyone know what causes this and what you can do to fix it

A. What kind of computer monitor ? Is it a CRT (the old kind of monitor) or is it LCD (the thin flat-screen) ?

=====

In the CRT type

There is a relay that degausses the tube (applies a varying magnetic field to erase any residual magnetism). This relay is supposed to turn on only when the power is turned on, then turn off shortly afterward and not turn on again. If there is a problem with the power control circuit it might be turning that relay on, which turns on the degaussing coil. If it is clicking then the circuit is going bad, turning the relay on and off.

Another type of clicking noise can be caused by the input circuitry being unable to keep track of the "scan rate" which determines the resolution of the image on the screen. When the circuit changes resolution there is a loud click. If this control circuit is going bad you would hear clicking.

CRTs have high-voltage power supplies for the picture tube; if the transformer is going bad there might be clicking, but usually it buzzes.

When you turn off the monitor the power supply still has power in its capacitors and as those discharge the circuit going bad behaves erratically and causes screen flicker.

=====

In LCDs you do not have degaussing coils. But the monitor still has circuits that detect the scan rate to display the correct image; if the circuits are going bad it might be making a clicking noise.

=====

Put the monitor on another computer and see if it still clicks.

If the monitor does not click, your video card or circuits in the computer to be suspected as going bad, sending out bad video signals.

If the monitor does click, you will need to get the monitor repaired or replaced. Repairing monitors is sometimes not worth the trouble; the technician might have to get a service manual for it and then have to get parts. I have been told the Chinese manufacturers are not very helpful with supplying manuals, and parts might be difficult to get. A new monitor is often much cheaper than trying to get it fixed; you can't get much of a warranty on a repair job on old monitors, while you do get a warranty on new monitors.

===== Edit:

I suggest you take it back to the store as it should still be under warranty. Even if the manufacturer's warranty has expired, the store should still maintain the merchandise.

What's The Best Way To Clean A LCD Computer Monitor?

Q.

A. Cleaning Your LCD Screen

The major computer outlet stores are now starting to carry LCD cleaners for Flat Panel Monitors and Notebooks that do not contain the chemicals found in some commercial glass cleaners. These cleaners will definitely do the job nicely, but you do have to purchase them. If you do not wish to purchase these factory made cleaners, then you can clean your LCD Screen in the following manner.

What You Can Use

Water.

Water with a tiny amount of soft liquid soap.

Isopropyl Alcohol.

Hexane.

Petroleum Benzine.

Commercial glass cleaners that do not contain ammonia.

What You Should Avoid

Acetone.

Ammonia.

Ethyl acid.

Ethyl Alcohol.

Methyl chloride.

Toluene.

Commercial glass cleaners containing ammonia.

How You Should Do It

You should clean your LCD Screen display by applying the cleaner to a soft, clean cloth. Then you should wipe the cloth across the display from left to right, moving from the top of the display down to the bottom of the display. If your display contains grease or some other contaminant, then you should dampen your cloth with water instead of a commercial cleaner as the cleaner may smear the contaminants across the screen.

Doe every monitor work for every desktop?

Q. I'am not really good at this computer stuff.

A. An LCD monitor usually uses 2 kind of connections:
VGA

http://cdnsupport.gateway.com/s/monitor/7005574R/graphics/VGA_CONN.jpg

DVI

http://pix.crutchfield.com/kb/hd_connectors%5Cdvi_connector.jpg

If your computer's videocard has the output connections like this one(VGA,S-Video,DVI) you can be sure any display you buy will work.
http://www.microsoft.com/library/media/1033/windowsxp/images/using/setup/hwandprograms/67360-video-card-annotated.jpg

If your computer has got only a white connector(or two) but not the blue one...just like this one:
http://multi-monitor.info/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/67360-desktop-available-dvi-port.jpg
...you can use a VGA->DVI converter(if the display hasn't got any DVI connection..although ...nowadays every LCD has DVI connections):
http://www.masproductos.com/catalog/images/vga-to-dvi.jpg

Anyway..here's a DVI->VGA converter..just in case you need it although I'm completely sure you won't:

Multiple Monitors, Multi-Monitors & Multi-Screen Computers?
Q. I am a Day Trader that is finally going to go multi-monitor like the rest of my friends and colleagues. I am looking to convert my current system to three screens, or should I purchase a new system? Can somebody kindly let me know what all of the Multiple Monitor options are and which one would be best for Day Trading? Thank you!

A. The Three main ways to Setup Multiple Monitors

1) You can buy a pre-manufactured multiple monitor computer. The best place to purchase a multiple monitor computer is at: http://Multi-Monitors.com. They carry a multi-monitor computer line called SUPER PC that can support from 2 to 12 monitors (or more if you ask).

http://www.multi-monitors.com/SUPER_PC_Multi_Monitors_com_Multi_Screen_Computers_PCs_s/23.htm

http://www.multi-monitors.com/SUPER_PC_Multi_Monitors_com_Multi_Screen_LCD_Displays_s/21.htm

2) You can get a USB to VGA Adapter, or USB to DVI Adapter that will allow you to add an extra monitor to your computer via any USB2.0 Port. You can also add multiple extra monitors by using multiple adapters. This is a great option for viewing documents, surfing the web, using Microsoft Office and many other business tasks. This is not a good option for intense graphical situations such as HDTV, Blu-ray, Gaming and 3D / CAD Workstation applications. For those types of scenarios, it is highly recommended that you purchase a high-powered multi-monitor workstation or a Matrox Dual or Triple Head2Go.

http://www.multi-monitors.com/SUPER_PC_Multi_Monitors_com_Multi_Screen_USB_Adapters_s/22.htm

3) You can replace or add an extra video card to your existing computer, depending on how many monitors you wish to support. Although this sounds easy enough, this is a rather complex solution for a beginner, especially when trying to find a compatible graphics card. For this reason, I am going to write an entirely seperate post on that topic and will link to it here, very soon.

http://www.multi-monitors.com/category_s/1914.htm

Once you have your multiple monitor system set up and ready to use, you will need to enable all of your monitors in your Display Properties Control Panel. Here is a great link to a complete and animated walkthrough of how to enable your multiple monitors in Windows.

ideas on fixing a flickering LCD monitor?
Q. I left my computer running while I went to make dinner and came back to the monitor flickering. It is like a strobe light almost where it will display for a second and then turn black for a second. I have tried replacing the cable connecting it to the computer as well as the power cable. I also used different connectors so its not the cable or the connectors causing the problem. any ideas on other things that might need replacing?

A. Hello,

If your monitor is several years old then I would say you have a power supply failing in the monitor. If your monitor fits into this age group then you may want to look at the web page below that talks about why monitor power supplies go out and what needs to be replaced to repair the units. Most monitors should be easily repairable.

Now the second thing, if your monitor has a red or pink tint to the image then you have a different problem. The red/pink tint and flickering is caused by the backlight florescent bulbs going out. they are just like the bulbs in the lights in an office just much thinner and smaller. When they start to fail the color changer from white to reddish pink. You can replace the bulbs but this is a much bigger task than most people want to tackle.

Remember before you start repairing anything check the warranty on the unit, some monitors have a 3 year warranty and could get fixed for free.

How to secure my LCD monitor?

Q. At work, we're moving from offices to cubicles, and I'm worried that my flat screen monitor might get stolen. Here's why: There are still construction workers all over the place, and little to no security. Someone could walk out with it very easily. I bought a kensington lock for my computer... is there anything comparable out there that I could use to secure my monitor?

A. A lot of LCD monitors have a Kensington lock slot on the back.

Take a look over the covers to see if yours has one.

Macbook pro mid 2011 black screen?

Q. Okay I made the mistake of updating my macbook pro again because last time I did the same thing and this happened. I get the black screen but when I hook it up to an external monitor it is fine and I can still type on my mac and such like i am doing now.

Is there something wrong with the power support and the led lights? Why isn't my screen up. The computer is on but the backlit keyboard is off and the lcd is too. Help, I just bought this mac a week ago. It is brand new.

A. There is something in the update that is FUBAR'ed, it is shutting off the backlight on the keyboard and lcd, probably a mistake in the power save options. I would say step back the version if you know how to, and don't update it again.

Computer monitors turning off with certain actions?
Q. I have a dual monitor setup (HP w2408 wide LCD monitors). When I do certain things, the monitors will immediately go into sleep mode, every time, guaranteed. These things include:

- Starting playing a song in Winamp
- Once a song finishes playing in Winamp (or I press stop to stop playing a song)
- Plugging in my iPhone
- Unplugging my iPhone

I don't think it's a problem with my monitor, because BOTH monitors go into sleep mode. And I'm not performing taxing tasks at that time (for example I can have just restarted the computer, and plug my iPhone in (no other programs are running), and boom...the screens will go into sleep mode.

It's SUPER annoying, and I'm pretty sure this only started happening after the latest Window update (I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, Service Pack 1).

Anyone know of any fixes for this?

And yes, I checked my power settings. Set them to "never" turn off screen. Still happens.

A. Hello, If you want the display to be just on one screen, you will need to go to your computers' Display Settings which can be accessed by right clicking on your desktop and personalize your display or through the control panel->Appearance and Personalization-> Display. In the settings, for the multiple display option, select "Display desktop only on 1" or "Display desktop only on 2" depending on which monitor is 1 or 2. Here are some websites that will help.

My LCD monitor blanks then shows 'out of range' when I run a 3d game?

Q. I checked my monitor settings and windows allows up to 200hz but when I try it, the monitor shows 'out of range'. I was thinking of checking the box "Hide modes this monitor cannot display." but it's been grated out.

I have a GEforce FX5200 video card with a 17" LCD monitor. I used to be able to run these games before I reformatted my PC and re-installed everything. I use Directx 9.0c.
Other details: My OS is Windows XPSP2, games I tried running that worked before is Vampire the masquerade and Avencast.

If I have to tweak the registry, please tell me how. Thanks
Thanks Norlore for the input. Unfortunately, i didn't get the CD when I got his monitor from my dad. I tried looking for the manufacturer's site (Digital Cynos) and I couldn't find it. There was a site but I couldn't get through. www.driverguide.com also doesn't have the driver from that manufacturer.

I checked the config of Vampire, the settings are within my hardware's specs. Avencast however, shows settings beyond my specs. But the funny thing is, I was able to run it the last time before I re-installed my whole system. Trying to find the proper settings of my PC for this. Thanks.

A. Well the "hide modes" box is probably greyed out because windows does not know the specifics of your monitor,

Windows uses generic settings if it has no information on your specific monitor, this is what is on the cd that comes with a monitor, it is an INF file, or monitor driver which tells Windows what resolutions and refresh rates your monitor can do (don't confuse this with the video card driver)

Now LCD's unlike CRT's like a slower refresh rate, usually 60-80 hz, only a few will operate above that

Ok that said you have the latest driver in for your video card right, now if you can run the cd that came with the monitor, if not try to get it (the driver or inf file)at the makers website,

If you cannot get the monitor driver, check to make "sure" the game is not trying to run at a resolution higher than the monitors native resolution (usually 1280x1024)

If you have a 17" widescreen you will need to know what the native resolution is, it varies on many of them from 12xx up to 14xx

Most monitors will error trying to run a resolution higher than native

EDIT

Did you get a driver at the Nvidia site or are you using the Microsoft supplied driver, Your monitor is probably compatible with any generic settings,

If you are using the driver from the XP disc I would grab the Nvidia driver from there site, that might have more definitions of monitors and access more of your cards abilities, the MS ones are sometimes kind of bland

Minimum refresh rate for monitors to support ?
Q. And I was wondering if there are 3D computer LED/LCD monitors that can be bought.
Damn, I meant to support full hd 3D.

A. There are quite a few LCD monitors on the market that are 3D capable. The minimum refresh rate for a monitor is 60Hz for a 2D display, but for 3D, you would want a 120Hz monitor. That way, you could use either passive or active 3D technology. Passive technology uses the same type of glasses you would have that the theater for a 3D movie. (I.E., There's one red lens and one blue lens.) There's no electronics in them. Active glasses use technology to show first a one image to one eye while blocking the other eye. Then they show a second image to the other eye while blocking the first. This is why 120Hz is required - so both eyes are being presented with a 60Hz display. In general, most people agree that active 3D looks better than 2D, but it's more expensive for the glasses and the display.

I'd recommend going to a Best Buy or the like an viewing both active and passive 3D. The last time I was at Best Buy, there weren't any passive 3D setups left. However, there were active 3D TVs, Xboxes and Playstations 3s. What you see on the latter two would be similar to the computer display. I've seen newer (1080p) TVs that are 240Hz, which is supposed to make the 3D pop even more. I haven't seen a monitor specifically for a computer that is 240Hz yet, but I'm sure those are in the works. (You can always use a TV as a monitor of course.)

Keep in mind that the monitor and the glasses are generally sold separately. The monitor is fairly generic with regards to the glasses, but the glasses are usually specific to a particular set of graphics cards from a specific manufacturer. That is, you'd want Nvidia-compatible glasses for an Nvidia card.

** edit **
I doubt it's possible to get any 120Hz monitor that is not full HD (1080p).

LCD monitor with speakers?

Q. Seems to have problems with my audio card in my PC. Can I get a LCD monitor with built-in speakers to bypass the problem with my audio card?

A. If the problem is with your audio card, different speakers will not help. You need to replace the audio card or fix the problem.

is a LCD monitor with those specification details worth $270.40 Australian dollars / $221.46 American Dollars? I live in australia

A. Is it 20"? The spec is not bad. Rule of thumb when to purchase a new LCD monitor: Contrast ratio should be high, the higher the better (i.e: 1000:1 is way better than 500:1), the lesser the response time is always better (will have smoother graphics when you are watching or playing game), the higher the brightness is also better, and the option to have both analog and digital input is always nice to have and last, the viewing angle, more angle is better if you are looking at bigger screen size. Overall the specs is good. I think it is pretty good buy if it is 20" screen size.
