Is it possible to use an LCD monitor with DVI port for Playstation 3?

Q. My LCD monitor doesn't have HDMI. Is it possible to connect a Playstation 3 to it using converters or something?

A. yes but you need something else to use to get sound since DVI is a HDMI cable minus the sound you'll need to have a HDMI cable with a HDMI to DVI adapter for the video

What is the significant of monitor resolution refresh rate?

Q. I try to set my monitor to different resolution, but with the same supported resolution, there are a few "refresh rate" settings associated to it. I just wonder what is the significant of monitor resolution refresh rate? If I set the "wrong" refresh rate, will it do any damage to the monitor? If higher the refresh rate, will it produce better picture quality?

A. Refresh rate depends on the monitor's make, monitor's resolution, video card (if installed) or on-board video chip (if included in the motherboard).

You should consult display [monitor] and video card manuals before changing the settings to determine the supported refresh rates. Most users swear that increased refresh rate decreases flickering, thus reducing eye strain due to better picture quality. Microsoft caution users that if the specified refresh rate is beyond what is recommended for the monitor, damage to the display, thus the monitor, can occur http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311403

On smaller CRT monitors (~<14") are set comfortably at 60–72 Hz. On larger CRT monitors (~>17") most are set to a more comfortable 85 Hz or higher. 100 Hz is comfortable for almost any size. However, LCD monitors refresh rate would more accurately be referred to as frame rate in their case (often locked at 60Hz).

The refresh rate can be calculated from the horizontal scan rate by dividing by the number of horizontal lines and multiplying the result by 0.95 (since about 5% of the time it takes to scan the screen is spent moving the electron beam back to the top). For instance, a monitor with a horizontal scanning frequency of 96 kHz at a resolution of 1280 × 1024 results in a refresh rate of 96,000 / 1024 × 0.95 = 89 Hz (rounded down).

How to choose the right LCD monitor for gaming?
Q. I am going to be using the LCD monitor with my Xbox 360 and I am having difficulties on what I should look for.

I can't seem to figure out what specs I am looking for. Can anyone tell me about which contrast ratio, vertical/ horizontal refresh rates, resolution, and brightness I should look for on an LCD monitor?

Also would it be better with HDMI or no? If possible can you also list a few monitors you would recommend?

A. HDMI is good, but expensive. DVI will give you the same result for a lot less.

Refresh rates are going to be about the same for every brand. However, some top of the line have 240 Hz rates - very good.

Resolution: 1920x1200 is HD widescreen.

Contrast of 1000:1 or better.

Response: 5 ms or less

Dot Pitch: 0.28 or less

Brightness: 300 cd at a bare minimum, get the highest.

How do I setup multiple monitors with my laptop?

Q. I've just bought an LCD monitor and tried to set it up so I can see better on a larger screen instead of on the tiny screen on my laptop. However, after hooking up the cable, only the desktop wallpaper is shown on the LCD monitor screen and nothing else. What's the problem? Please help!!

A. That's how it is supposed to be. You only get your taskbar and system icons on your primary monitor. Just drag and drop things over to the other screen.

Is it normal for a monitor to make clicking noises at random when monitor is off and on?
Q. ....it's a kind of a plastic-related clicking noise..which occurs alone (single click at a time) totally at random...maybe about 2-3 times an hour or less. Monitor can be on or off. Noise is the same.

It's kind of loud at times.

Is this normal? Could it just be the case "settling in" or something?

Had it for some months now.

It's a very large TFT LCD monitor.

A. My 26 inch TV has been doing the same thing you describe for as long as I can remember in the 16 years I have owned it. Still works fine.

how do i make my monitor hdcp complient with out buying anydvd software?

Q. i have a hp lcd monitor that reads its not hdcp complient. is there a workaround other than buying any dvd to get it to play blu ray movies?

A. You misunderstood.

HDCP is a hardware thing that needs to be BUILT into the monitor.

You will NOT be able to play back Blu-Ray discs in full HD on a non-HDCP monitor, no matter what DVD drive or software you try to buy.

What is a good blu-ray player to run to my lcd monitor?
Q. I just read i could hook up my P244W lcd monitor to a blu-ray player.I have 2 hdmi imput's and max resolution 1920x1080. Do you think a blu-ray player should work with this monitor?

A. Yes HD movies on blu-ray discs have a resolution of 1080p, so your monitor supports that resolution. But 24 inch is low for watching HD movies in full glory (anything of 32 inch or above would be good) .

Besides Blu-Ray players in India are rediculously high priced. If you can afford it, sony PS3 would be great investment for playing Blu-Ray discs as well as games in budget of around 20000 or you can wait for prices to come down.

Is there a light gun that works with mame and a LCD projector?

Q.

A. Nope, You need a certain type of monitor for the light gun to work.

help planing out mame cabinet.?
Q. im new to building my own arcade cabinet. are there any tips that anyone wishes to share to a bignner? like where to shop? safty precautions? or how much money and time and space it could take up?

A. I am assuming you are building from scratch. Best advice is plan, measure twice, cut once, Use quality controls, and Take Your Time.

Let me start off by saying the end product is what every thing is based on:

Money:
The wood: What you use to make the cabinet needs to be sturdy and one side finished for a good look. (I have used HDO plywood in the past very good product http://www.freemansupply.com/HDOFirPlywood.htm)
The computer: It needs to be fast enough to run the games you wish to play. You can go overboard here and just buy to fast of a cpu that you just didn't need. Remember hard drive space.
The monitor: This can very also. Mainly 3 types to use. 1 a CRT type like the original arcade games used. 2 a flat screen plasma or lcd TV/Monitor. and 3 a regular TV 20+ inch. (Note that orientation is a factor also for the install and overall size.)
The controls: You will need to know how many buttons, joysticks, rollers, spinners, ect you will need for the games you will have loaded. The control panel is what I always built my Cabinets around. I determined How many player and the needed controls and placement. Made a mock up with cardboard to see the size and function ability of the controls. Knowing this size allowed me to know how wide the cabinet would be and then the size of the monitor. Also it showed what king of hardware I needed to connect the controllers to the computer.
The Hardware: You will need wire and at least one ipac/jpac. I always added two fans, a power strip, lighting, speakers, wireless keyboard and mouse.
Cost: from scratch can run from as low as $800 to over $2000 from my experience.

Time:
As stated before TAKE YOUR TIME! plan, plan, plan. I never finished one on a set time schedules, but did make goal points.
1 acquire the computer, hardware, and controls.
2 while still acquiring parts, start design as mock build ups.
3 acquire the wood and other materials to assemble the cabinet.
4 build the cabinet.
5 build the control panel.
6 install the monitor.
7 install the wiring
8 Install the CPU
Not really that easy but generally the order.

Space?: To build? I use an 8x10 Shed. Cabinet size, I've only made one monster that was almost 4foot wide and deep. I built one that was a sit down that was two parts and they pinned together and took up about 3.5 wide and 7 foot long. But most are gust over 2 foot wide and just under 3 foot deep. All sizes are footprint size, control panels not added.

Here is a great resource sight for a lot of you needs when building. http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?board=1

What are the parts i need to build a PC ?

Q.

A. Excellent choice building your own PC. There are multiple parts you will need for your build.

-Motherboard: Usually one of the most expensive parts, Recommend ASUS or Gigabyte
-Processor (CPU): Can also be very expensive, Recommend AMD (although many people will refer you to Intel's processors, I do not like them. I've always found AMD to be cheaper, more bang for your buck, and moe efficient and reliable)
-RAM (Random-Access Memory): Usually inexpensive but it depends on the brand and amount (6GB > 2GB) Recommend Corsair, G.Skill, or OCZ
-Graphics Card (GPU): NOT entirely essential for a computer to function unless you want to play games and run certain software (like AutoCAD)
There are two major chipset manufacturers for GPU. ATI and Nvidia. Nvidia: Recommended brands are XFX, EVGA ATI: Recommended brands are Saphire, MSI, ASUS
-Hard Drive (HDD): Usually inexpensive, Recommend Western Digital
-Power Supply (PSU): Usually inexpensive, Recommend Antec, OCZ, Corsair
-Case: Holds all of your components, different cases for different needs.
Antec and Cooler Master make excellent gaming cases for hot systems, large video cards, and have plwnty of fans to keep good air circulation but not recommended for an average joe computer.
-CD/DVD Drives and Writers: One of the cheapest and easiest parts, Recommend Sony, HP
-Monitor: Can be very costly, Recommend Hanns-G, ASUS

Here's my PC Plans (to give you an example) please note this computer is a relatively costly one but is very powerful, not your average consumer PC:

Case: Antec 900 Gaming Case
Motherboard: ASUS Crosshair III Formula AM3 Socket 790FX Motherboard
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2Ghz AM3 socket CPU
GPU: XFX GTS250 512MB GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16
Memory: G.Skill 4GB (2X 2GB) 240-pin DDR3 1600 Dual Channel Kit
PSU: Corsair 650TX 650Watt ATX12V PSU
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
CD/DVD: Sony Optiarc 18X CD/DVD-ROM drive
Monitor: ASUS VH202T 20" 5ms LCD monitor

LCD computer monitors?
Q. I am in my sophmore year at college and i am really getting into using many differernt programs in the visual world like, AutoCad, maya, and 3Ds stuido max. I am working on a 15in. labtop now and i am looking to by a 19 or maybe 21+ in. lcd monitor to use. I was wondering what specs i should be looking for and whats good like Brightness, Contrast Ratio, Display Colors, Display Type. So if anyone knows anything about these, could you tell me whats a good or an ok spec. I am looking for something pretty cheap, like under $200. thanks for the help

A. Get the biggest LCD monitor you can for the price. They're all pretty much the same in that price range you're talking about so the rest of the specs won't matter much.

I am wanting to buy a 22" lcd monitor. Can you give me any useful information about one?

Q. Right now i have a Dell 17" lcd monitor and was wanting a 22" Dell lcd monitor.I only use my computer for about 3 hours a day.Can you give me the pros and cons to buy one or not to buy one.I'm not really a computer genius but i would like to know if i would really benifit from a larger monitor. Thanks

If it means anything i am using a Radeon x300 graphics.

A. you will have a much larger viewing area than a 17 inch, MUCH MUCH MUCH. you iell be able to fit more programs/windows on one screen. if it was me id go for it cuse i just like bigger monitors, and i was in ur position once (or a similar one) and i went for it and was very happy i did. but if you want to save your money, dont get one or wait for a good deal, like i got mine for $200 at bestbuy :). make sure it has at least a 5 ms response time, dvi and vga input, and anything above a 700:1 contrast ratio. and thats its not some cheap brand, get one made by someone like westinghouse, LG, samsung, etc.. not some office depot only brand.
p.s.
if you get this monitor gaming performance (if you game) will be greatly decreased, expecially with that graphics card.

Indian Customs Duty on PC Monitors?

Q. I am planning to buy a 20" TFT LCD PC monitor from abroad and will take it to India. It costs around 400 USD. Will I have tp pay customs duty? Somebody has told me that we can bring with us upto $600 goods duty free. Is it true? Or for IT products it is always duty free whatever be the price ?

A. If your TFT LCD PC monitor is never used or brand new you will definetely have to pay costoms duty. And regarding duty free last year they nearly charged me for liquor bottles aslo. Indian customs sucxxxxxx. If you have your relative working in costums department you can contact them , that may help you ( power). Or try to use your moniter for few days so that it dosent look brand new and call tell hten its my house hold stuffs.

What kind of adapter do I need to buy to hook up my video game consoles to my lcd monitor?

Q. I have acer 24" lcd monitor. No speaker port only a hdmi port. I want to connect my xbox(original), wii, ps2, gamecube, etc. to it. What type adapter do I need to purchase in order play all my consoles using the monitor.

A. It has an HDMI port?

None of the systems you listed have HDMI output.

So you may need to see if you can find a converter for the three-pronged "Composite" signal into HDMI. They aren't common.

My monitor turns on and off every 5 seconds. How do I fix this?
Q. It's a Samsung T240 LCD monitor. 24" in size. Never had this problem. Everything was fine. Been using for more than a year. No changes in hardware or anything but lately, the monitor turns itself on and off very quickly like a flash exactly every 5 seconds. How do I fix this? I'm using the DVI port. I've checked all cables and disconnected and reconnected them securely. Still having this problem.

A. I would try the monitor on a different machine.

Any Recommendations For LCD Monitor For Photography?

Q. I'm considering getting a new LCD monitor for photographic use. I currently have a Samsung 931B and Acer x171 (running dual monitors on Gigabyte video card -- 256mb-- and Acer is just for dragging pallettes out of way in Photoshop.) I'm considering a 22" widescreen to go down to a single monitor, but am on a fairly tight budget. I could prolly go up to 'round $350, so I know that's really limiting me.

It doesn't need to be fancy, I just need something that is sharp, true colors, and good contrast w/o being *too* contrasty.

A. I would contact Adobe directly and get recommendations.

I know in the CRT monitors Samsung, Sony, NEC, Dell, Apple and ViewSonic were supported monitors.

In any case you will need to calibrate your monitor. See links below

I need to ask a question about the Canon EOS 350D?
Q. Hi, I am new the world on cameras, and I bought this one as my second camera, and I have a very strong feeling that the only screen is the small one about the LCD monitor. Am I correct? Or is there a setting I can change to make the LCD monitor the screen like almost every other camera?

A. "screen"? "about the monitor"? Your question is very strange.

However, I will take a guess, anyway.

I would say you are asking about the viewfinder, and about something called "live view".
Your camera is rather old and basic (but that doesn't make it a bad camera), and it doesn't have that feature.
However, you are not missing out on anything.

"Live View" on a DSLR is not the same as the screen on a P&S.
You can hold a P&S at arm's length in the typical snapshooter's position (and that is such a bad technique), but thankfully you can't do that for very long with a heavy DSLR & lens combo.
Live view has its uses occasionally , for instance for macro shots, but it isn't instant like the display on a P&S, it sort of lags, and just doesn't feel right.
Live View is not meant to replace the view finder, a serious photographer uses the view finder because it is vastly superior, full stop.
I was excited about my first DSLR with live view, but very quickly gave up on it again - the view finder is so much better.

Your camera may be basic, but you have a perfectly wonderful learning tool - use it to your advantage.

Learn about your camera !!!!

Read your manual !!!! Read it several times, and practice in between. If you don't have a book, download a new one from the manufacturer's website.

Attend a class, read some books, read/watch online tutorials.

The major camera manufacturers (like Canon, Nikon, Olympus etc) all have very useful sections on their website for learning about photography.

What is the best LCD monitors for the best price?
Q. I am looking into getting a new LCD monitor so I can take advantage of my 256mb video card with a DVI output. I am wondering if anybody has some good input on which brand and model to get , I like the samsung T220 with it's 20000:1 contrast ratio . Thanks for you input.

A. Yes I can give you some input. For real, no b.s. like on Polls and Surveys. I studied monitors last year extensively, and here are my results:

The two best choices I could find were Viewsonic and Samsung. I went with the Viewsonic 22" because of it's extremely high user satisfaction ratings, the unbelievable warranty it came with, and the price. Samsung was neck-n-neck, with Viewsonic. But the warranty wasn't as good, and they weren't on the market as long so I had no long term performance information to go on. You will never regret buying a Viewsonic anyway. They are not going out of business, and their quality is near the top of the heap. I bought it from COSTCO. If you don't have a membership then I recommend that you get one, because you are going to save the membership fee with the monitor purchase anyway. They have both Samsung and Viewsonic. You can go with the Samsung, if you want. You won't hear complaints from me. I'm just advising you from extensive experience and age (unfortunately), how you can make the best choice. You can see my monitor on my 360. The picture is tiny, but, you can see it.

Is there any software to convert normal LCD monitor to 3D?

Q. Is there any software to convert normal LCD monitor to 3D or is it to buy a new TV with 3D option.. I read somewhat that it is just a software that can convert monitor to 3D. is it true?

A. Absolutely untrue.

Those 3D-ready LCD monitors have DVI or HDMI ports that can receive a 120Hz video signal. Normal LCD monitors top out at 60Hz only-- They are BUILT that way and no software can ever change that.

Is it possible to replace my lcd monitor on my pc with a brand new larger led-lcd tv?
Q. Will that work as a monitor? What tv brand should I get?

A. Yes. Virtually every LCD monitor and TV has a vga input connection. If you want better video, you may need to add a video card with DVI-out for a digital connection. Look for 120hz, 1080p, and LED. LG, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, and Panasonic are all very good. Element, Viore, and Vizio are budget-level displays, but are usually a couple hundred dollars less than the others with the same exact specifications, just uglier on the bezel.

How can I connect a digital camera straight to an LCD monitor?

Q. I would like to connect my camera direct to an LCD monitor so that clients in the studio can view the images as I shoot. The monitor I have spare does not have a composite video input, just VGA. Is there some convertor out there that will convert composite video from the camera into VGA that can be displayed on the monitor?

A. Such converter does exist, but it costs more than a small TV. $150 or so I think. You can just buy a small TV and probably save a bit of money, unless you are REALLY REALLY cramped in space.

When taking a picture of a pure white paper it shows up bluish on my cameras LCD monitor ?
Q. Using a Canon Rebel XS. I can't figure out why the LCD monitor picture is darker than what it looks like through the viewfinder eyepiece. I am taking pictures of small objects and would like to have every picture have a bright pure white background.

A. Two possible options
1. You are shooting with the wrong whitebalance
2. your monitor is in dire need of calibration

The first can be fixed with a quick look at your manual, for the second this will be a good solution: http://amzn.com/B0037255LC

Can LCD monitors damage the skin around your eyes?

Q. I have an LCD monitor and I wanted to know if it can damage or affect the SKIN around your eye in any way? Like for example can it cause premature eye wrinkles, or thin down the skin around it, or anything similar?

A. LCD monitors are the same light as a lightbulb...just a bit more intense and controlled to display images. Unless you're squinting and straining to read something on screen then you're fine.

What is the diff between a TFT-LCD and LCD monitors? Which is good for eyes in terms of long working?
Q. I wanna buy a 19" LCD monitor and currently weighing between HP and Samsung monitors. All HP monitors are called LCD monitors as per the package details as well as per their website, while all Samsung monitors are called TFT LCD Monitors. I am a bit confused, as I work a lot on PC, I would like to protect my eyes and health. Can someone help me with correct answer?

A. LCD monitors use Liquid Crystal Diodes.

TFT is an LCD monitor that uses Thin Film Transistor technology.

Other types are:
TN+Film - Twisted Nematic
IPS - In Plane Switching
MVA - Multi-Domain Vertical Alignment
PVA - Patterned Vertical Alignment
S-PVA - Super Patterned Vertical Alignment.

TFT is the most common today, and LCD is accepted as being TFT-LCD. Usually you only see a differentiation if it's one of the other technologies. The other types all have their advantages and disadvantages, but TFT is the cheapest to manufacture today.

For your eyes, you want an LCD. LCD's are on, and change when they change vs. a CRT which has a refresh rate. In a CRT, the phosphorus is charged and glows, but then dims very quickly. The refresh recharges it, but there is a dimming and brightening affect. The higher the refresh rate, the less noticable it is to you.

Within an LCD, if cost is no object, you want an IPS (better) or S-PVA (best). They will have the highest contrast ratios and brightest screens. Be prepared to pay, and pay well for this luxury though.

What's the difference between an HDTV and a computer monitor?

Q. I believe some of the obvious differences are HDTVs have TV tuners, and the port connections can be different. What I'm looking for are some of the less obvious differences such as refresh rates, aspect ratios, pixel info, etc. I want to get a large monitor (28 inch to maybe 32 inch) for my desktop computer and was wondering whether a 32 inch HDTV would work well.

A. Almost all LCD computer monitors have 60Hz refresh rates. Most cheap HDTVs also have 60Hz refresh rates, but some of the better ones have 120Hz, 240Hz, or even higher.

All current HDTVs on the market will have a 16:9 aspect ratio, while some flat panel monitors are still being made in 4:3 and 16:10.

If you want to use an HDTV as a computer monitor, I would recommend you get one with full HD (1080P) resolution. Also, make sure the HDTV you buy has a port your computer can use. Most HDTVs will have a VGA port, some will have DVI as well. If your computer has an HDMI output in the first place, then you're set!

What is the difference between a plasma and LCD TV?
Q. What is the difference between a plasma and LCD TV? I see advertized on their website, a Vizio 42 inch plasma TV, for $650, including free shipping. Someone told me the reason why LCD is preferable to plasma, but I forgot what it was.

A. TV Size

TV size matters first and foremost. If you look through various consumer and guru guides you will see that its essentially a consensus that you need not worry about high end features unless you are going to break 40" and more so 50". The reason being is that you can not see the advantages of those features in smaller sets. But being that you're looking at 42", an advanced feature/option, like Plasma, makes sense.

LCD

LCDs inherently suffer problems with motion playback. They suffer from motion blur (ghost trails). This is compensated for with the 120Hz/240Hz refresh rates. This feature helps out a lot, but is not 100%. And you are expected to pay a price premium for this add-on.

CCFL LCDs have muted colors, grey blacks, and so-so contrast. This is compensated for with the modern LED LCD. The LED backlight provides a massive jump in quality in regard to those 3 things. It brings it to a near Plasma/CRT/DLP level.

But in smaller sets, LCDs are the go to choice. So for the time being they will certainly still fill an important need there. And there also offer a certain sense of familiarity for many, as LCD computer monitors have been the norm for so long now.

Plasma

Plasmas are inherently near instantaneous in their refresh rate. They are flawless in motion playback. While you might see some tagged with 480Hz or 600Hz sub-field motion drives, this is not a refresh rate. Its more so marketing to trick consumers (because of LCD's refresh rates). But in reality the technology just works quite differently (its more like your old CRT/tube set).

Plasmas inherently deliver vivid color, true blacks, and deep contrast. They do this right out of the box. They are a better overall image. And so you get a better image and perfect motion playback without having to pay anything extra.

Plasmas were not always this good a choice though, they have improved greatly over the years. But because of those past problems they do currently suffer from many myths and misconceptions. The main ones being that they suffer from burn-in, they are more expensive, they have shorter life spans, and they are energy hogs.

Modern Plasmas do not suffer from burn-in. After they are conditioned, you would have to actually work hard to accomplish a burn-in. To condition a new set all you need to do is keep the brightness and contrast turned way down for the first 100-200 hours of use. After that optimize and enjoy.

Plasmas are not more expensive than LCD rivals anymore. Any especially with LCDs needing high end features like 120Hz and LED backlights to compete. Those features often make LCD far more expensive to buy.

Plasmas do not have shorter life spans. The reputable brands will deliver models that are rated to 60,000 - 100,000 hours. That basically means that in 10 years time, at 8 hours a day, 365 days a year, you would only really see at most about a 10% loss in brightness. So the set is likely well useable for beyond 10 years.

Current Plasma models are now energy star certified. This means no more being power hogs against LCDs. They can match LCDs in this regard. But every model is different. There are some LCDs that still perform better, and there are some LCDs that perform much worse. It changes ever year as new models come out.

Brands

Though for Plasma I would recommend looking at Panasonic or Samsung before Vizio. Look at Best Buy right now for some sales on 42" Plasma TVs from those better brands. Vizio doesn't really have the reputation of being an elite Plasma TV manufacturer.

The Samsung PN42B450B1D is on sale right now for only $680. The Panasonic TC-P42X1 is on sale for $700. That's two 42" Plasmas from top tier manufacturers, still within the same price range.

Which provide best picture and text quality in 1920 x 1200 Monitor?

Q. 28" at 1920 x 1200 resolution or 24" at 1920 x 1200 resolution?
Being at only 24" with 1920 x 1200 wouldn't it look better than the 28"? Smaller, compact dots provide best picture, I'm I right?

I was comparing the Hanns·G HG-281DPB and a few 24-26" monitors.

A. Given the same resolution (1920x1200), the smaller monitor would have the finer dot pitch, yes. That does not necessarily mean a "better picture" though.

Some people like having a bigger screen at lower resolution so the letters are bigger and easier to read, some people like finer dot pitches, so it's really a matter of personal preference.

Personally, if I'm buying a 1920x1200 monitor, I would get the biggest one possible since I love watching Blu-Ray DVDs at full pixel-for-pixel 1080p resolution. I run my computer on my 52" LCD HDTV at its native 1920x1080 resolution and I think it looks just fine.

Is a 27" computer monitor too big for 1920 X 1200 resolution?
Q. Would a 24" monitor be better for 1920 x 1200 resolution?

A. I'm using a 52" LCD HDTV as my monitor, displaying 1920x1080 resolution (aka 1080p High Definition). Looks just fine to me. http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f347/armchairaviator/computer/IMG_0880c.jpg

Is it unhealthy if I wash my face after 8-12hrs of working in-front of my PC monitor?

Q. Is it unhealthy specially for my eyes? My monitor are LCD and LED.
I kinda feel refresh each time I wash my eyes but I think its weird, so maybe their is a side effect just maybe.

A. Variations of this have been asked for years. I've never understood the reasoning behind it.

What effect could washing your face possibly have to do with the fact you have been using the computer ?

There is no logical connection in any way, shape or form.

Some idiot parents even forbid their kids to take a bath within an hour of using the computer....what kind of nonsense is that ?

Washing your face is fine...but DON'T wash your eyes ANYTIME...regardless of what you have been doing. There is no need to wash your eyes, they clean themselves better all alone. Washing them removes the natural lubricants and makes the eye feel dryer and opens them up to infection until those lubricants have replaced themselves.

You can hold a cool facecloth over your closed eyes and that will refresh them even better.

Can computer Led/Lcd monitor upscale lower resolution video to fit in higher resolution screen?
Q. Ok it's probably a noob question.

As far as I know HD led/lcd tvs can upscale lower resolution game video/frames(ps3 xbox 360) to fit the whole screen.

So I need to know can computer monitor with hd resolution support (1920x1080) upscale 1360x768p resolution game video/frames to fit the whole screen?Or I need to play at native 1920x1080p resolution so that the monitor can fill the whole screen? Is there any special type or model of any Lcd/Led monitor that can upscale Pc game's frames from lower resolution to fit the whole screen? Is this any special feature for computer Led/Lcd monitor? If so what is this feature is called/named?Do different manufacturers lcd monitor have different names of this feature?

the reason I am asking is because I play at 1360x768p resolution on 16 inches lcd monitor and now I am thinking about updating to a 1920x1080p monitor. But if I play at 1360x768p resolution will there be blank spaces around the edges of monitor screen or the monitor will upscale the game frames to fit the whole screen ?
ok those blank bars do make me feel the monitor is not used to it's full potential

kind of makes the monitor feel empty and game screen with black bars also feels

quite weird to me.

So what is the aspect ratio of 1360x768 resolution 16:9 or 16:10?Will it upscale and fit to 1920x1080 resolution monitor or leave blank bars outside the game frame?

A. 1360x768 is 1.7708333 ratio. 1920x1080 is 1.777777 ratio. Very close.
16:10 is 1.6 ratio. 16:9 is 1.77777 ratio. As you can see, the 16:9 ratio screen best fits both the resolutions you are trying for.
But there is a cost to upscaling. Since you cannot manufacture greater detail out of a lower resolution signal like 1360x768, what upscaling does is to add in duplicated pixels every so often. Since there are (1920-1360 = 560) more pixels to put into the picture, that means somehow those 560 pixels are added over the spread of 1920 pixels. About every 3.42 pixels another one is added. Actually it goes 3,3,4,3,4,3,3,4,3,4 etc. As you can see, a lot of duplicates are added. The resolution is not any better. It is just expanded to cover greater area of screen. It does get fuzzier if you compare side by side. But you are supposed to view from a greater distance so you will not notice.
And, I think the standard is 1366x768, not 1360x768. That gives a 1.7786 ratio.

Where can I find a generic driver for my new 19 inch LCD monitor?

Q. My old CRT monitor died, so i trotted down to Best Buy and bought an inexpensive 19 inch LCD monitor. When I got it home, I discovered that the drivers on the disc are only for Windows Vista, and my computer uses XP. I have also checked the company's website, no luck. I wouldn't care much, except I use this system for photo editing. All of the graphics are stretched to fit the wider screen. Any suggestions?

A. you dont need drivers for almost all monitors. the basic ones windows install work fine and there will be no difference

How do I get true color on my computer monitor for photo editing?
Q. I have a nice Nikon camera that I use to record moments in life and also for artistic expression however I have no idea how or what to do to get true color on my monitor for the photo editing in Photoshop and other photo editing programs. Can anybody tell me in a step by step manner what to do to accomplish this?

A. Two things. First - you need a monitor that is consistent in color representation from different angles. If you have an old CRT monitor - you're done. It's great in that respect, though does require calibration more often. If yours is a new and cool slick LCD - most consumer level monitors are horrible at that. The LCD monitors that are good at any angle bear Super IPS (aka S-IPS) panels and normally sell at $600-700ish or higher (up to a few thousand), depending on brand and size. If your budget does not allow for this expense - you need to adjust your sitting position such that you are level with the middle of monitor and looking straight at it at about 90 degree angle.

The second thing you need is a way to calibrate it. There are many devices that do it for you, such as mentioned Spyder, or the one I own and am very happy with:http://www.amazon.com/Pantone-MEU101-huey/dp/B000CR78C4 - when activated, this device is placed on your monitor, it will show different colors on display and will read them with its sensors to see how they need to be adjusted to represent the actual colors.

The poor mans version of this (again, if budget does not permit for one) is Adobe Gamma, which comes with Photoshop (not sure if it only comes with full version, or elements too though). You may be able to find it in your Control Panel (or in a few other places - read the info below). It basically does the same things as the hardware calibration device, but asks YOU to answer the questions of what you see on the screen and to make adjustments, until you see what you're supposed to (such as it will adjust brightness until you can see the given number of shades of gray on the screen). It does not do as nice of a job, because you are a very subjective measuring device, but is better than nothing. Here's more information on Adobe Gamma and how it works: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/321/321608.html

How to tell if a monitor has superb colors or not?

Q. I'm looking into buying a nice LCD monitor, and I'd like to get a monitor with pretty much the best colors, and contrast available. What is there to look for? How do I know if it's near the best?
And can you recommend a great one for me?

Thanks

A. Monitor prices depend on the type, size, and features of the display. For example, the AOC e2243FW, a no-frills model that uses a 22-inch TN panel, costs around $150. It lacks niceties such as USB ports and a height-adjustable stand, but it does use LED backlighting, is ultra thin, and requires very little power. Its performance is fine for most entertainment purposes or for viewing business and productivity apps,

Q. Hello i want a 24 inch lcd screen monitor but some reviews say that your eyes will hurt. And i am always on my computer, would it really hurt more? Should i get a 20-21 inch or a 24 inch?

A. I had 21" and I changed to 24". It's fine. Better than before.

Should I get an LCD monitor without a tv tuner or an LCD TV with tuner?

Q. Should I get an LCD monitor without a tv tuner or an LCD TV with tuner? I'm thinking about getting a 30-32" screen for my computer that I will use a lot (and mostly for computing purposes and probably watching Blu-Ray and Netflix on). It seems like LCD monitors without tuners that are 30" are significantly more expensive than LCD TV's. Why is that?

Which should I get?

A. I would suggest getting one without, and buying a tuner for your computer. Only 70 bucks at best buy and you can get a even better monitor without the tuner. It sounds like you are getting a TV that doubles as a Computer Monitor which in most cases is not good. A true monitor will give you the best quality compared to a tv with Monitor Capabilities. Also you can hook up your Cable to the TV tuner and DVR shows, and save yourself some money but not having a dvr from the cable company if you have one already. Go Single Monitor Only, you will be much happier, and buy the tuner separate. Link below for Tuner Cost. I am sure there are cheaper out there but this is the one I use and it has been great.

Can anyone recommend a good non apple monitor to use with my mac?
Q. I've just bought a macbook and need a large lcd monitor to work with it. I decided not to get an apple monitor as I was told I could get just as good a monitor by another company for less money. Any recommendations would be great. It needs to be as good as - or better than the apple cinema display. Thanks!

A. It'd be good for you to check Viewsonic monitors, they're probably the best in these days, especially if you're a designer and care about things like color, contrast, brightness and pixel quality. Hope that I helped you. The page's the following www.viewsonic.com

btw..i already read and understood the manual but i says nothing about my problem...

A. I notice the driver was recently modified..I wonder if you should download from here.

The only other thing I can think of is ...your computer may have the early version usb port and not the Hi-Speed USB 2.0
If it is your usb..your can upgrade your older computer with one.

What is a good camera for a beginner Photographer?

Q. My aunt got me a cutesy digital one but it's not rechargeable, which is a real pain. Plus the zoom sucks.

I want a camera that can catch the sunlight in the morning dew. I don't have much money but I can always save up.

A. I recommend to anyone seriously contemplating the purchase of a new digital SLR camera to consider these two primary questions:

1. How much money do you have to spend????

2. What level of photography do you aspire to "progress to" in the coming years ? (i.e. basic beginner, intermediate, or professional/business use).

For most beginners to intermediates I usually suggest one of these two manufacturers: Canon vs Nikon

1. Canon EOS Rebel model XSi. (Also known as the Canon 450D in Britain)
The "kit" package comes with an 18-55mm zoom lens. The camera has pop-up flash, 12.2 Megapixels, and shutter speeds up to 1/4000th, 100-1,600 ISO sensitivity, 7 autoexposure Scene modes, PLUS Shutter Priority, Aperature Priority and Programmed Exposure Modes and Manual. It also has a 3 inch LCD screen, 3.5 frames continous per second max., 9 point AF system, Live View Functioning and the ability to record photos in 3, 6 or 12 Megapixels PLUS numerous other great features found only on more expensive cameras. Wal-Mart is also selling them now for about $799. Sam's Club also has them for $729.

I bought one of these 6 months ago and use it as my "back up" camera. I absolutely love it. I have gotten some fantastic photos with it and cannot praise it enough. I routinely enlarge my photos to make 8x10's and 11x14 size enlargements with no noticeable distortion or loss of detail in the pictures.

2. Nikon D-90: If you prefer to use Nikon equipment I strongly recommend the Nikon D-90 which has 12.3 Megapixels, 3 inch monitor with Live View, 200-3,200 ISO sensitivity, 11 point AF system with Face Priority, 4.5 frames per second in continous mode, 5 advanced Scene modes for auto exposure plus Shutter Priority, Aperature Priority, Programmed Auto plus Manual. The D-90 sells for around $900-950. (Body ONLY. The 18-55mm lens cost an additional $150.-175.) Typically, Nikon equipment is slightly more expensive than Canon equipment, but (having owned both Nikon and Canon cameras), I have seldom noticed BETTER quality results using Nikon equipment.

You might also consider the Nikon D-40 ($499) kit that comes with the 18-55mm lens.
Another great choice is the Nikon D-60 kit ($649) which also comes with the 18-55mm lens.

These selections are probably the best choices for any beginner to intermediate skill level, offering the most lenses and other accessories, dealers and places to purchase.

I strongly recommend that ALL beginners buy a good book on digital photography AND take a class or two from a Vocational school or Community Education Center in your area.

You can learn more about the technical specifications of each of these two cameras at these websites:

Should I wear anti-glare specs to protect my eyes while working on a LCD TFT monitor for long hours?

Q. Are LCD TFT monitors safe for eyes in comparison to the conventional monitors?

What should be done to protect the eyes while working for long hours on computer?

A. Special specs are not necessary and frequent breaks (every hour or so) are helpful for the eyes.

What's the difference between the LCD and the old ones monitor? How fast does the computer spoil our eyes?
Q. I would like to know the difference between the LCD monitor and the old ones, then i'm wondering if my eyes will be spoiled by computer cause i spend sometimes in computers,if so how fast can it spoil my eyes??

A. Flatscreens and LCDs certainly do provide a clearer picture, and I do prefer to use them over CRTs except when using my 3D goggles which only work on CRT monitors. If you plan on watching a lot of movies or playing games on your computer, then an LCD is worthwhile, purely for the quality of picture.

Generally, computer use will NOT affect your eyes. I've been staring into a computer screen for the better part of hmm... about 700,000 hours over 12 years. Probably a lot more, definitely not any less.

Most of that screen time was spent in front of CRT monitors. I only started to experience problems with reading about 2 years ago. My optomitrist says this was more due to having a lazy eye as a child that wasn't picked up. I now use glasses for reading books but can get by fine without them normally. If it were true that my eyesight had been affected by CRT use, then I would expect my dominant eye to be just as, or more, troubled as my non-dominant eye. However I still maintain perfect vision in that dominant eye, even though I use both to look at a screen. Eye problems run in my family, so all things considered, I don't think there's much of a correlation.

I know people who've spent just as long in front of computers as I have and they can see perfectly, if not better than most. Skin is also unaffected, but can get a bit blotchy if you stay up all night on the computer... as it will if you stay up all night doing anything else.
The other thing that makes me suspicious of CRTs causing eye problems is that when you use a computer your eyes get a good work out, reading small print, large print, looking here looking there.

If you're concerned about eye strain, try turning down the glare on your monitor (brightness or gamma) and switch to a less goudy colour scheme (ie no bold reds and contrasting greens). If you are further concerned, try doing simple eye exercises such as focusing on your finger close in and then far out, with each eye, one at a time.

Does anyone have any suggestions? My budget is 2400.
@brian I'm also doing video editing and rendering and virtual machines/minecraft server hosting (which takes up a lot of RAM)

A. i recommend upgrading a few things.
the motherboard and processor change to lga 2011,the costs are the same as what your getting but theres the option to upgrade to a hexacore in the future.

I also recommend staying away from rosewill power supplies.
I had a 850 watt psu rosewill fortress running a gtx 480,i5 2500k,8gb ram,and single hdd,and a dvd burner.
shoulda been at around 50-70% even a max,but within a month it burned out.
I'd go with a corsair,xfx,seasonic power supply.

the evga one is great because while its rated at 1200 it can output 2700.6x12v rails each with 38 amps.
so 38*12*6.because amps*volts =watts.since theres more than 1 12v rail you mulitply it by the number it has 6
38*12=456
456*6=2736
it's so heavily underrated because they wanted all the prestigious approvals of low ripple, clean power output, etc.

switch the ram to quad channel if you decide to change to the lga 2011

listed both since it's your choice.go with the 660 ti PE if you choose the 660 ti as it is more overclockable than a regular 660 ti,it has 2 pcie connectors vs the 1 on a regular 660 ti.

don't forget the dvd drive, you need to in order to install the bios, they can't be found online and you won't have internet access without them.

difference between tft lcd and just a regular lcd?

Q. What is the difference between a "TFT - LCD" And just a regular lcd???

im talking about monitors

A. TFT (thin-film transistor) is the "parent" type of monitor... and there are several different types of TFT monitors. So, in a sense, a "regular LCD" is simply a type of TFT monitor.

"The thin film transistor in a TFT LCD monitor consists of a thin film of a semiconductor material applied over a glass substrate. Each pixel in a TFT LCD monitor has its own transistor along with the liquid crystal material. The liquid crystal material exhibits properties of both a liquid, because of its ability to change quickly, and a crystal, because of its ability to remain in an arranged position. The transistor applies a voltage to the pixel, determining the color and intensity of the pixel. A pixel is short for picture element, and the tiny pixels blend together to create the image on a display." (See the www.wisegeek.com article below for even more details.)

The most common type of TFT LCD (and probably the one you are referring to as a "regular" LCD) is the twisted nematic (TN) display. TN displays are the most commonly used displays... they have high refresh rates but suffer from limited viewing angles and poor color reproduction. On a TN display, if you look at the image from severe angles you will notice a shift in the reproduction of color. While this does not affect most business or gaming users, it does present a problem to graphic artists who need faithful color reproduction across the entire screen.

For those who need accurate color reproduction, an in-plane switching (IPS) LCD would be used. IPS LCDs faithfully reproduce color but tend to have much lower refresh rates. Slow refresh rates are bad for fast moving images, so the IPS LCDs tend not to be favored by home users who may be more into gaming or watching videos on their computers.

There are other types of LCD displays out there, but the TFT type is by far the most common. Almost every LCD monitor you would see at a store is the TFT type... so in every sense the TFT LCD is a good, old "regular LCD". The TFT is generally dropped and we refer to them simply as LCDs.

What is the best monitor for a Graphic Artist? LCD, LED and CRT?
Q.

A. CRT

Is it possible to play Wii on an LCD Monitor?

Q. Games look decent on my 24"? TV, but it's Full Screen, and I honestly think that games would look 10x better on my LCD monitor.

I'd pay upwards of $60 to do this. Not really planning on breaking out a couple of hundred to do it, but if there are any hook-ups to make this possible, I'd love to know where and how to go about this...

Here's my monitor...

Also my video card is a Radeon X1650 PRO...

It has a number of different colored TV like wires in the box.

Says on box...

15-pin D-Shell (female) VGA output
DVI-I Output

TV-Out with S-Video Connector (TV-Out Version)
VIVO with S-Video Connector
HDTV Display Support

A. go to bestbuy or walmart but i doubt dat the picture wud change probably only a little bit

Is it possible to get dual monitors with just one iMac?

Q. I have an iMac here with a really great PC Monitor. Is it possible to get a cable from my iMac to that monitor and have two workspaces? Or does this require a whole nother machine?
Also, what kind of cable is it?

A. If you have one of the previous-generation Intel-powered iMac, it should have a miniDVI port. You need to buy a miniDVI-to-DVI adapter or a miniDVI-to-VGA adapter from Apple to connect it to your PC monitor to run dual monitors.

If you have the latest iMac with the new LED-backlit LCD display, it has a miniDisplayPort. You will need to buy a miniDisplayPort-to-DVI or miniDisplayPort-to-VGA adapter from Apple to connect it to your PC monitor.

Hope this helps.

Worth to upgrade from lcd pc monitor to led?
Q. I have a 3 year old LG 24 in pc monitor and was wondering if its worth upgrading to a led monitor?

A. Prices on LED Back-lit monitors is still falling.

And though your florescent back-lit will eventually die when the florescent tube
or the High voltage power supply that powers the florescent backlight fails
switching to a newer monitor will only cost you money you don't need to spend.... NOW.

LED Back-lit monitors have a much longer lifespan (no florescent = No Florescent to fail or wear out)

in the next year or two the OLED monitors will start to hit the market, and those don't use
the fragile liquid crystal at all but an array of colored LEDs

But when they do hit the market they will initially be very expensive.

What is a good LCD monitor for doing some photo work (hobby not pro) Budget = $400?

Q. Looking for a monitor good for doing photo editing but not anything completely professional. In researching monitors, many mention the gaming, video, text capabilities but not photo. What brand of LCD TV would work best as a computer monitor?
Q. Gonna be building a brand new computer almost specifically for gaming and want to know if anyone has any input with experiences on different TVs. The computer I am currently using is hooked up to a 26" vizio and while its okay I'm looking to go to something in the 40" range since im getting the new comp. Would really appreciate some suggestions and certain specifications that are a must have for this new TV. Thank you in advance!

A. Plasma is the only way to go for gaming. Get a 42" 1080p Plasma by Panasonic, its the smallest they make, with a 15.8 GBps or greater transfer rate HDMI cable. Panasonic bought Pioneer's panel technology when they went out of business. Plasmas don't have that screen burn issue any more either. Plasmas have 0.00001ms or something like that pixel response, and true 600hz refresh rate. (600 pictures per second). Remember, your taking 1,920 pixels by 1,080 pixels and putting them on a screen, the bigger the screen, the bigger the pixels are getting. Stretching the picture, thus giving you a fuzzier image. The rumors that its all about viewing distance, response 5ms response time tv's being adequate, that the human eye cannot detect anything past 60 HZ are reviews from retards. I have tested many tv's, and the differences are HUGE, there is a very noticeable difference between 2ms and 1ms response time monitors. The problem with 240hz and 120hz tv's is its all picture processing and creates a fair amount of input lag and unnatural movement. LCD's are terrible for gaming, no matter what the refresh rate or pixel response time and will ALWAYS suffer from motion blur, very noticeable in first person shooter games, the background will get very distorted whenever you move. If you want a small screen, benefit would be a very sharp picture and less money, get a Samsung 2770FH monitor, its a 27", with a 10.2 GBps transfer rate HDMI cable, and be sure to set the response time setting to fastest. They are a 1ms pixel response time monitor, 60hz which is ps3's native output refresh rate, and the reason pixel response is important is because the lower the response time, the sharper the picture stays. Get internet that is at least 1 mega byte download speed, and always set whatever screen you get to game mode.

What happens if I use a disinfecting wipe on my LCD monitor?

Q. I used a Lysol disinfecting wipe on both my LCD monitors while they were turned on (yeah...I know it was stupid) and now neither monitor will work.

To add to that, my G5 Power Mac, which was connected to the monitors at the time, seems to have frozen and won't respond to anything. I've tried unplugging it for 20 minutes and although when I plug it back up, the power indicator on the front is on, there is no other response.

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A. Lysol is mostly water with a little alcohol and ammonia

You may have zapped your Monitors, Graphics Card,Motherboard and/or Power Supply

You will need to test each thing in a good system
Or take it all to a shop and ask what's fried

Can I use old capacitors to repair LCD monitors?
Q. I am fixing an LCD monitor (needs new capacitors). In an old VCR/DVD player there are some with the exact same voltage and uF rating. Can I use them?

A. Don't use old electrolytic capacitors. They have a tendancy to dry out and go bad. If the old capcitors are not electrolytic, then they would probably be OK, but you might test them to see if they are still the rated capacitance.
