Is there an adapter to hook my laptop up to a desktop monitor?

Q. My laptop screen got smashed and was wondering if there was a way to hook up my desktop monitor so I can see to extract the files i need.

A. you can hook up a vga monitor to any laptop by plugging into the vga connector on the back or side. another option is to remove the hdd from the laptop and place it as an external to your desktop. Also keep in mind if you would like you can repair your laptop. The Repair for a laptop lcd would run in the $120-200 range depending on the screen model at http://www.computekforce.com. They offer nation wide repair service you just sign up for the service on their website and ship the unit to them.

How do you play your PS3 on a Computer's Monitor ?
Q. My parents are angry because i used their 10,000 dollars LCD TV to play games and they think it will make spoil of the TV .

I was planning to play my PS3 on my desktop monitor instead but how ?

My monitor is a 24" Dell flat panel monitor with DVI and VGA port cables.
I do not have HDMI on my monitor or graphic card.

A. In order to play it on your monitor, you will have to get another cable. Either a HDMI to DVI cable or a HDMI to VGA cable.

Why do Desktop computer systems not come with monitors?

Q. Looking through the ads, I notice that most, not all, systems advertised do not come with the monitor included. Why is this when I can buy a laptop of comparable value with, obviously, a monitor attached?

A. Thank you for your question! By asking this question you have helped me understand one big reason why so many people seem to want to buy laptops these days. You see, I run a computer repair business (in MN) and I always come across people that seem to want to buy laptops and I never can understand why. I always find myself advising folks to avoid buying one if at all possible, unless they really NEED the mobility of the laptop. Laptops are problem ridden, and very expensive to repair. First of all, they're more expensive in the up-front cost for a comparable unit (in terms of performance). Of course, the average person has no idea what performance is or looks like on paper when they're buying a computer. Second of all, even if they're comparable in performance, they can't be upgraded as much as a desktop can. You can't buy a new video card for a laptop, for example. Third, if your monitor breaks or motherboard fails, you're really in trouble if you're not under warranty. You're looking at minimum $250-500 to replace a monitor or motherboard on a laptop. And that's just parts, not labor.

To answer your question more directly. Desktop computers don't come with monitors because monitors cost money. If they came with the monitor, the cost of the system would have to be higher, no matter what anyone tells you. The LCD is one of the most expensive parts of a computer system. Also, people like the option to NOT have to buy the screen if they already have one. People also like to be able to choose the size of the screen and not be stuck with some pre-packaged or bundled screen. Also, this helps sales people avoid the question "how much will this cost if I don't need the screen." Then the sales person would be stuck having to say "sorry, it comes with the screen, you 'can't' get it without it." That is something no sales person would ever want to have to say. Ten or fifteen years ago, that's kind of how it was as a matter of fact. But back then, most people were making their first computer purchases and didn't have an "extra" monitor sitting at home.
I hope this gives you some insight into the business! Thanks again for educating me with your little bit of consumer mindset. Now I know why people want laptops so much other than the fact "they're so cute." :P

where is the best place to buy a digital camera and what is the digital camera?
Q. i am trying to but a digital camera. i dont what kind i should get. i like the ones that have auto face dection, red eye crop and blurr fix. I want to spend under $450. Where and which i should i get?

A. Please look at the new Canon Powershot SD850-IS. This is a very versatile camera that meets your specifications. It has a nice workable zoom range that will take you from broad scenics to decent telephoto views. Look at some sample images from the reviews on the SD700-IS to get the idea what this lens will cover. It has image stabilization, which really works. It is small enough to fit into a shirt pocket. It has a rechargeable battery that is good for 200-250 shots, depending on how much zooming and viewing you do or on how many shots use the flash. A spare battery is 1¾"x1¼"x¼" and the charger is barely twice that size, so carrying the spare is easy and packing the charger is easy. It has an optical viewfinder which can be useful when the sun is too bright to see the image on your LCD monitor. I could go on, but you can read some reviews and see what the pro's say.

Click on "Read Owner Opinions," which are mini-reviews by buyers. You can also read the full review on the SD700-IS by clicking on that option.

The upgrades for the SD850-IS are:
Canon Digic III image processor instead of Digic II
8 MP instead of 6 MP
Maximum ISO 1600 instead of ISO 800
Accepts up to 4 GB memory card instead of 2 GB
LCD monitor has better image
Face detection

I listed these in the order of importance, in my opinion. The first two are the ones that really count the most and the rest are just gravy.

B&H Photo has this camera for $310 and they will have suitable memory cards (1 GB or more) for $20-30.

Many of us trust and recommend B&H Photo. I have been using them for many years without a single problem. B&H Photo is available through a link at Yahoo! Shopping, www.bhphoto.com or at 1-800-622-4987. See also http://www.resellerratings.com/store/B_H_Photo_Video_Pro_Audio

Green shades in my acer lcd monitor while watching movies or playing games ?

Q. Green shades in my lcd monitor while watching ripped hd movies on character faces or in the corner of the screen or while playing some HD games ....why is it ? and I've tried different codecs yet problem persists, is it my monitor fault or my graphics card nvidia 8400gs fault?
No, I don't have another lcd monitor or tv right now , is there any other way to check it?

A. Do you have another monitor? could you connect your PC to the LCD TV?

If you use another monitor then you would know weather its the card or the Monitor.

Also as its an external graphic card, you could take it out and use the on board graphic card on the motherboard. Try it out and see if monitor is still green.

What is a good blu-ray player to run to my lcd monitor?
Q. I just read i could hook up my P244W lcd monitor to a blu-ray player.I have 2 hdmi imput's and max resolution 1920x1080. Do you think a blu-ray player should work with this monitor?

A. Yes HD movies on blu-ray discs have a resolution of 1080p, so your monitor supports that resolution. But 24 inch is low for watching HD movies in full glory (anything of 32 inch or above would be good) .

Besides Blu-Ray players in India are rediculously high priced. If you can afford it, sony PS3 would be great investment for playing Blu-Ray discs as well as games in budget of around 20000 or you can wait for prices to come down.

Should I get an LCD monitor without a tv tuner or an LCD TV with tuner?

Q. Should I get an LCD monitor without a tv tuner or an LCD TV with tuner? I'm thinking about getting a 30-32" screen for my computer that I will use a lot (and mostly for computing purposes and probably watching Blu-Ray and Netflix on). It seems like LCD monitors without tuners that are 30" are significantly more expensive than LCD TV's. Why is that?

Which should I get?

A. I would suggest getting one without, and buying a tuner for your computer. Only 70 bucks at best buy and you can get a even better monitor without the tuner. It sounds like you are getting a TV that doubles as a Computer Monitor which in most cases is not good. A true monitor will give you the best quality compared to a tv with Monitor Capabilities. Also you can hook up your Cable to the TV tuner and DVR shows, and save yourself some money but not having a dvr from the cable company if you have one already. Go Single Monitor Only, you will be much happier, and buy the tuner separate. Link below for Tuner Cost. I am sure there are cheaper out there but this is the one I use and it has been great.

Can anyone recommend a good non apple monitor to use with my mac?
Q. I've just bought a macbook and need a large lcd monitor to work with it. I decided not to get an apple monitor as I was told I could get just as good a monitor by another company for less money. Any recommendations would be great. It needs to be as good as - or better than the apple cinema display. Thanks!

A. It'd be good for you to check Viewsonic monitors, they're probably the best in these days, especially if you're a designer and care about things like color, contrast, brightness and pixel quality. Hope that I helped you. The page's the following www.viewsonic.com

i need a SLR digital camera that i can shoot a subject while viewing it on the LCD monitor?

Q. i need a SLR digital camera that i can shoot a subject while viewing it on the LCD monitor. can you suggest me some manufacturer and models?

A. Hi,

The Sony Alpha series has this. Canon and Nikon need to flip the mirror up to refocus, so the screen goes blank for a short time. Sony uses a second sensor to focus - so you can view all the time.

You should ask yourself why you want this though. Live view is good for composition and getting horizons horizontal, but DSLR's are heavy, and holding it to your eye/face makes sure it is steady. That's why so many amateur videos look as if they were made by a drunk - it is just too difficult to hold at arms length.

Cheers
Charles

Can you use the lcd monitor to view your shot on a Canon 5d?

Q. As oppossed to using the viewfinder? Is there a setting I have to change to turn the lcd monitor on while shooting?

A. The Canon EOS 5D does not have Liveview.

If you mean the 5D Mark II then it does, and check your manual to see how to turn it on. If you lost it you can download the full manual direct from the canon website.

I want to start getting into photography?
Q. What camera is solid camera to start with for a beginner that isnt that expensive but no crappy?

A. There are TWO primary factors to consider:

1. How much money do you have to spend????
2. What level of photography do you aspire to "progress to" in the coming years ? (i.e. basic beginner, intermediate, or professional/business use).

For most beginners to intermediates I usually suggest one of these two manufacturers:

1. Canon EOS Rebel model XSi. (Also known as the Canon 450D in Britain)
The "kit" package comes with an 18-55mm zoom lens. The camera has pop-up flash, 12.2 Megapixels, and shutter speeds up to 1/4000th, 100-1,600 ISO sensitivity, 7 autoexposure Scene modes, PLUS Shutter Priority, Aperature Priority and Programmed Exposure Modes and Manual. It also has a 3 inch LCD screen, 3.5 frames continous per second max., 9 point AF system, Live View Functioning and the ability to record photos in 3, 6 or 12 Megapixels PLUS numerous other great features found only on more expensive cameras. Wal-Mart is also selling them now for about $799. Sam's Club also has them for $729.

I bought one of these 6 months ago and use it as my "back up" camera to a more expensive Canon EOS 5D Mark II. I absolutely love it. I have gotten some fantastic photos with it and cannot praise it enough. I routinely enlarge my photos to make 8x10's and 11x14 size enlargements with no noticeable distortion or loss of detail in the pictures.

2. Nikon D-90: If you prefer to use Nikon equipment I strongly recommend the Nikon D-90 which has 12.3 Megapixels, 3 inch monitor with Live View, 200-3,200 ISO sensitivity, 11 point AF system with Face Priority, 4.5 frames per second in continous mode, 5 advanced Scene modes for auto exposure plus Shutter Priority, Aperature Priority, Programmed Auto plus Manual. The D-90 sells for around $900-950. (Body ONLY. The 18-55mm lens cost an additional $150.-175.) Typically, Nikon equipment is slightly more expensive than Canon equipment, but (having owned both Nikon and Canon cameras), I have seldom noticed BETTER quality results using Nikon equipment.

These two selections are probably the best choices for any beginner to intermediate skill level, offering the most lenses and other accessories, dealers and places to purchase.

I strongly recommend that ALL beginners buy a good book on digital photography AND take a class or two from a Vocational school or Community Education Center in your area.

You can learn more about the technical specifications of each of these two cameras at these websites:

How do I play my xbox 360 on my computer monitor?

Q. I have an LG HD LCD 24 inch monitor with these specific ports for video input:
HDMI , DVI-D, VGA

So I have 3 ports for input on my monitor and I am having trouble developing a plan to hook my xbox up to my monitor since I have the 2nd model (arcade model I think it's called [the 2nd white model]). My xbox does NOT have an hdmi port so that is making everything a problem.

What would be the best solution to setting up the xbox? I've tried looking for cables for this purpose and I find xbox 360 AV cables to vga (but I know vga is old and does not support HD).

I'd just like to get a second opinion before I go start buying things.

A. Well obviously if you do not have an HDMI option on your Xbox then HD is pretty much out of the question.

What's the difference between the Dell ST2410 24-inch and the Dell G2410H 24-inch LCD monitors?
Q. Specifically what one would be better for watching movies? I want to get a second monitor that I will ONLY use for watching blu-rays, so what one of these would have better video quality?

A. THe ST2410 has a regular CCFL backlight and an HDMI port and built-in speakers. The G2410H uses more energy-efficient (and longer-life) LED backlight, and does not have HDMI or built-in speakers.

THe G2410 is HDCP-compliant though, which means it can connect to an HDMI device like a Blu-Ray player using a DVI-to-HDMI cable (but you will have to connect a separate set of speakers to the Blu-Ray player to get sound).

What amplifier i need for my car PC project?

Q. I have a 2008 VW golf GT with the standard 8 speakers package and i am planning to put a car pc. I will remove the oem Head Unit and put a 7" inch lcd monitor. I will need an amplifier to connect the speakers to it and then the amplifier to the carpc. My question is what type of amplifier i will need? I will have to buy 2 4-channel amplifiers?

Thanks in advance

A. A 4-channel with an optional mono amp for subs.

For a "carputer" the idea is to have a "non-hard drive" based computer that runs stand alone Windows XP/Vista from a Bootable USB drive that runs the music player of your choice using plugins.

Your MP3's are stored on another USB drive that can be removed for editing.

This all ties into your sound system (amps, subs/speakers).

No hard drive means nothing will crash. A touch screen display is really the only other peice of equipment needed that can be custom mounted in your dash as you say.

Look up BartPE and Sherpya. These two guys found a way to run the full GUI of Windows XP on a USB drive (under 600 Mb).

A shuttle style computer is all you need for the computer. You can even have 5.1 or 7.1 Dolby digital.

Here is a good place to start:

How long do LCD monitors typically last?
Q. I bought an Acer X163W LCD monitor from wallmart for $99.99, and i was wondering ho long it will last in a 24/7 media environment. I've already had it on for 4 months 24/7 and don't notice anything changing with image quality and brightness.

A. Typically the backlight is rated 50,000 hours, so do the math to see how many years that is. 50,000/24/365 = 5.7 years. Multiply that by 3 if use averages 8 hrs/day. However, if other electronic components are overrated or substandard, or you physically fatigue a connector or break something, that may shorten its life.

Of all the laptops and LCD monitors/TV's at home or small office at work, I have only seen one failure. A 17" Dell LCD monitor failed at work, but not sure exactly what the issue was, maybe a fatigued VGA connector. At first it would fail to wake from standby unless I jiggled the cable. But eventually it was just a black screen with blinking green power LED (which was usually solid green when on or amber in standby). Same cable works fine with different monitor.

I have a PIII 500 laptop purchased Jan 2000 that still works. And I left it on 24/7 for a couple of years as a wireless terminal for a PC in my basement. Although, the display did go into standby when not in use. I have not fired it up much lately other than to get some data from it (dual boots Win98se and Linux).

What is the difference in LCD monitors?

Q. I am planning to buy a new monitor for a new PC, and I wasn't sure what kind to get. I do web design on it and I watch a lot of movies. I also do photo editing and digital drawing. I want something with nice sharp picture, but I wasn't sure what all the numbers mean on the listings. I have been looking at Tigerdirect. Could someone explain the differences and what all the little numbers mean for each?

23" 1366x768 / 720p Native / 8ms / 700:1 Contrast Ratio / HDMI / ATSC Tuner / HD LCD TV

Samsung SyncMaster 216BW 21.6" Widescreen LCD Monitor - 5ms, 1000:1(DC 3000:1), WSXGA+ 1680x1050, Gloss Black, DVI-D, D-sub, 300 cd/m2

The 1000:1 thing and the 720p are what I dont understand at all. Please impart your knowledge upon me.
I know one listing is a monitor and one is a tv, but assuming they will both work with my computer, what do you think.

A. The number 720 stands for 720 lines of vertical display resolution, while the letter p stands for progressive scan or non-interlaced.

1000:1 is a contrast ratio this explains it:
The contrast ratio is a measure of a display system, defined as the ratio of the luminosity of the brightest color to the luminosity of the darkest color that the system is capable of producing

What is the difference between a regular LCD Monitor and an HDTV or HD Monitor?
Q. I am in the market for a 22-24" monitor for my computer. I will use it for web surfing, photo editing, and the occasional watching of videos via YouTube or Hulu. Is it worth the investment to get a HD or HDTV monitor? What benefits does it offer that a regular LCD does not?

A. Sounds like you need just a regular LCD monitor, the only time someone needs a HD Monitor is if they are gaming, also watching TV if it has a built in tuner or advanced video or photo editing.

How to hook up a pc monitor to cable box?

Q. Hello I have IO digital cable and I am using a fifteen year old piece of c&%p tv that is on its last legs. But for my computer I have this beautiful 24 inch LCD monitor for my computer. Is there any way for me to hook up my IO box to my monitor directly or must I have a tuner card put into my pc

A. Does the cable box have an hdmi port on the back of it? You could potentially run an hdmi to dvi cable to your monitor (Or hdmi to vga whatever your monitor is using currently.) Then you would just have to use the cablebox remote to change the input source.

Are LCD-monitors relatively safe to use, and if so for how many hours per day?
Q. I bought a 22-inch LCD Samsung monitor. I want to know how it compares to other monitors (CRT) in terms of safety. What distance is best to view it from, and how can I minimize the harmful effects.

Thanks in advance.

A. Yes it is quite safe to use an LCD Monitor, but is not as stable/reliable as an ordinary monitor, and it is not advisable for one to use long hours since it is very sensitive and it's lifespan isn't impressive either.

How big should my widescreen LCD be to match a normal LCD's height?

Q. I am thinking about upgrading to a widescreen LCD monitor with my new computer. How big should a widescreen LCD be to have the same screen height as a 17" and/or a 19" regular LCD monitor?

A. Hi. The screen's resolution should equal the number of pixels in the LCD, so size is not the main issue. My LCD has 1280 by 1024 pixels, so that is what I run at. The 17" and 19" dimensions are the hypotenuse values (diagonal). I don't know the brands you are looking at but try to have at LEAST 1024 vertical pixels.

When constructing a web page, how big should the pixel size be?
Q. Simple question for developing a web site. These days common PC users have LCD monitors usually a wide screen. Please suggest your opinion.

A. pixel size?? im sure u meant to talk about the width of the page and graphics? i usually design so that it works fine even on a 15" monitor (1024 x 768 resolution)... so generally that makes the width of the page 900-1000 px a good value...

What is the difference between an LCD Monitor and an LCD TV?

Q. Why are LCD Monitors cheaper than LCD TVs? Both receive and process digital information so why the big price difference? Is it the resolution and clarity? Or is it just a rip off the industry doesn't want you to know about?

A. Those LCD panel for Monitor use is design main for text display. LCD display panel for tv use is design for image/picture. is not the same panel, some technical difference ! A low end standard LCD monitor price can be cheap, but a good monitor should be cost more than LCD tv ( compare to same size screen ). For TV..LCD display + tuner RF > IF> colour decode > Audio RF>IF> ..... Total many other parts and circuit design . Monitor need good Resolution LCD panel + VIDEOS display circuit , because of resolution ,LCD Display panel price always high,or even very high ! ( unless ,some cheap monitor use bad resolution panel ). maybe make is more sample for this... F1 engine and WRX sport saloon car engine, is engine, but difference design because of difference NEED !

How do I get my speakers to my monitor to work ?!?
Q. Okay so I have no speakera & I just noticed that my monitor comes with built in speakers, So how do i get my Speakers to my Monitor wich is a HP 23" Widescreen LCD Monitor with BrightView Panel, 16:9, W2338H <-- That is the exact Monitor i have That i bought from walmart.. PLease help ! :)

A. On the back of the monitor, there should be a connection for a 1/8" (3.5mm) headphone jack. This is the sound input connection.

You simply need a cable that has the standard headphone jack on both ends. One plugs into the monitor and the other plugs into the computer.

That cable should have been included in the box with the Monitor.

What is the best configuration for a gaming PC within $900?

A. I believe what you looking for is this

http://www.affordableproductreview.com/products/?go=make-high-performance-gaming-desktop-2013-games-ready

The gaming pc would cost you around $800. It has the following parts:

What is the current value of my desktop computer?
Q. I purchased all the parts to this computer in June 2011 (getting close to 2 years ago) except for an additional 2TB hardrive June of 2012 and the Logitech Illuminated keyboard a few months ago. Everything is still in great condition; I just have no need for it anymore and would like to sell it. I am wondering what an estimation of the current value of it would be so that I know what to sell it for? All the components brand new were originally $1060, and now all the same components would cost $999 brand new. Here are the specs/components and their current price ($999 total):

How to tell if a monitor has superb colors or not?

Q. I'm looking into buying a nice LCD monitor, and I'd like to get a monitor with pretty much the best colors, and contrast available. What is there to look for? How do I know if it's near the best?
And can you recommend a great one for me?

Thanks

A. Monitor prices depend on the type, size, and features of the display. For example, the AOC e2243FW, a no-frills model that uses a 22-inch TN panel, costs around $150. It lacks niceties such as USB ports and a height-adjustable stand, but it does use LED backlighting, is ultra thin, and requires very little power. Its performance is fine for most entertainment purposes or for viewing business and productivity apps,

How do I know the form factor and monitor type of my desktop?
Q. Form Factor:
Desktop: Standard
Desktop: High Performance
Laptop/Notebook

Monitor Type:
LCD (Thin, Flat Panel)
CRT (Older, Larger type of monitor)
Dual LCD Screens
Dual CRT Screens

Monitor Size

How do I know what all of those are? And how do I measure the monitor size, like diagonal, across, etc?
Those are the options a program I downloaded gave me, so how do I know what I have?

A. First off, you probably have a standard desktop (unless you have a laptop) so choose that. The monitor type is like it says. If it is the newer flat type it is LCD. If it is big and heavy it is CRT. Unless your computer is REALLY old, you probably have an LCD. Dual screens is for...well.. two screens. You probably don't have that. The size is measured diagonally from corner to corner. It will be 16 or 17 inches, possibly higher.

What is the difference between LCD TV and LCD monitor?

Q. I want to purchase a LCD TV/LCD Monitor for my PC. Which should I purchase - LCD TV or LCD monitor. Is LCD TV harmful for eyes as compared to LCD Monitor? Which is the best one LCD TV or LCD Monitor?

A. A LCD MONITOR does not have a built in tuner...

That's the ONLY difference between the same model...

They are great if you know you'll be connected to Satellite or Cable and using their HD Set top boxes for the next 10 - 15 years.

If you're unsure, get the LCD TV.
If it was harmful to the eyes, do you think they would be allowed to sell it?

You can test a LCD TVat this site

How do you connect your ps3 to your lcd computer monitor to play games?
Q. I would like to play ps3 games in full hd but I don't have enough money to cough up for a new hdtv. I have a VH242H Asus LCD monitor(24 inches). Do you need an hdmi to dvi cable? or can you connect it using hdmi directly since my monitor has an hdmi port. How do acquire audio?

A. you can use a HDMI cable to your computer. Once it starts up it should automatically reset the settings, or you can go to the settings to adjust them.

Audio will be set up after you have done the video settings on your PS3 (like right after so they arn't seperate) or they should automatically be done.

I need ideas for a good High definition DSLR camera?

Q. Hey guys

Im looking to buy a brand new Digital SLR camera that takes good High Definition photos AND it has to also be very good at taking High definition videos. Please tell me what you think is best.... The most I am willing to pay is $1,500 but I would prefer to keep it under $1000.

Thanks in advance

A. As of yet buying a Nikon DSLR for even moderate video use would be insane. The rolling shutter issues are terrible and there is very little manual control. The d3100 does look promising however.

The pentax k-x, while probably a good stills camera, is not well suited for video

In your price range, you are looking at:

Canon Rebel t2i: Great low budget HDSLR. Captures images quite similar to the 7d at a lower price. I own a 7d and purchased it only for video use. It is great. The t2i is very similar with a cheaper plastic construction.

Canon EOS 60d: Probably your best choice. Great images, better than t2i, almost as good as 7d. Has a swiveling lcd monitor which is great for video.

Conclusion: There are a ton of great DSLRs out there, but the Canons FAR surpass the others as far as video is concerned. Canon DSLRs are being used to help shoot large Hollywood productions.

All others are very poor as far as video is concerned, with the exception of the GH1 and soon to be released GH2. These camera from panasonic are quite good for video, but will not take as good of stills as the larger sensored Canons, and will not be very good in low light. Canon is currently the clear frontrunner. Look up Philip Bloom and Vincent LaForet on vimeo to see what these cameras are capable of.

What do I need to do to us my computer monitor to play my ps3?

Q. I have a HP 2010 Series Wide LCD Monitor. Can anyone tell me what kind of adapters I would need, if any?

A. If it has an HDMI input, you'll just need an HDMI cord. If it doesn't, you'll need an HDMI-to-DVI adapter. I used to have my PS3 set up that way, you'll need to use your AV cords for sound (I had mine plugged into the back of a stereo).

If you have to buy an HDMI cord or the adapter, shop online. You can get both on Amazon for under $15, but Radioshack was going to charge me over $120.

Would buying an ultra HD monitor be the wise choice with my system?
Q. HP Pavilion p6674y Desktop PC
HP 2010 Series Wide LCD Monitor
Windows 7 Home Premium
ATI Radeon HD 4200 video card

My computer can play HD videos (720p and 1080p) but the colors are always REALLY dark or the playback is choppy. My drivers are up to date, but I can't help but think the problem is the monitor (which I assume is pretty middle-of-the-road quality). I want to be able to watch clear 720p and 1080p videos.

I'm looking at the Asus VS247H-P 24-Inch Full-HD LED-Lit Monitor, but don't want to spend the money if it's my whole CPU that's the issue.

Thanks!

A. I really wish people would stop using the term "CPU" to refer to their entire machine. But that's besides the point...

I doubt that the monitor is your problem (your monitor doesn't really have much of a say over how choppy your video is). If I had to venture a guess I'd say the problem if your graphics card: the Radeon 4200 is kind of lower end.

My recommendation would be to buy a new graphics card. If all your doing is watching videos then you don't need to spend money on a gaming card or anything - just a basic $30-$50 card should cut it for you.

Is there a way I can keep my LCD Monitor from strectching everything?

Q. I just bought a new monitor and it is stretching everything. I use Photoshop a lot and everything looks funny. Does anyone know a way I can make this not happen?

A. Set your resolution to the native resolution of the monitor. This is usually the highest allowed resolution under the display preferences.

The only reason to use a lower resolution than native is if you have problems seeing things.

Any Recommendations For LCD Monitor For Photography?
Q. I'm considering getting a new LCD monitor for photographic use. I currently have a Samsung 931B and Acer x171 (running dual monitors on Gigabyte video card -- 256mb-- and Acer is just for dragging pallettes out of way in Photoshop.) I'm considering a 22" widescreen to go down to a single monitor, but am on a fairly tight budget. I could prolly go up to 'round $350, so I know that's really limiting me.

It doesn't need to be fancy, I just need something that is sharp, true colors, and good contrast w/o being *too* contrasty.

A. I would contact Adobe directly and get recommendations.

I know in the CRT monitors Samsung, Sony, NEC, Dell, Apple and ViewSonic were supported monitors.

In any case you will need to calibrate your monitor. See links below

Do I need any additional graphic card for E248WFP 24 inch monitor?
Q. I am planning to buy E248WFP 24 inch LCD monitor and I want to know any requirement regarding any additional graphic card to run it in its native resolution optimally.

My system config:
Intel Core2Duo E6750
2x1 GB RAM
Intel(R) G33/G31 Express Chipset Family
Display Adaptor

I don't play games and watch movies but use task intensive applications.

Please help me.

Thanks

A. Intel integrated graphics can easily handle the native resolution of your 24" LCD, especially in 2D mode. It is in 3D graphics where its performance is less than satisfactory. Unlike dedicated cards or better integrated graphics, Intel GMA 3100 has no hardware vertex shader and just relies on software for 3D acceleration.

You can consider an HD capable video card as an upgrade when you need it. The ATI HD 2400 is very cheap but supports HDCP and HDMI.

What should I upgrade to make my computer better for gaming?

Q. Okay, so I have an HP Elite 570T Desktop computer with dual 23" HD monitors. I'm looking to up my frames and enhance my graphics on Planetside 2 and other games. What should I invest in primarily, given my current specs?

Specifications:
Model: HPE-570T
Harddisk Drive: 1.5TB 7200RPM (I'm assuming if I purchased a solid state drive I'd be in better luck)
Processor: Intel Core i7-2600 CPU @ 3.4GHz
Memory: 9GB DDR3
OS: Windows 7 64-Bit
Graphics Card: NVidia GeForce GT 440 3GB
Primary Monitor: HP 2310 Series Wide LED LCD Monitor 1080p
Secondary Monitor: Samsung PX2370 LED LCD Monitor 1080p

Once again I'm looking for enhanced graphics and better fps.
Thanks!

A. Get a faster Graphics card. The GT 440 is pretty slow compared to other cards out there.

However the problem is that your computer's power supply is only 300W. This limits what you can upgrade to. You should upgrade to a ~600W powersupply, and then get yourself a GTX 660 Ti, if space is an issue, Zotac makes a short form factor version.

What is the best amount of inches for a TV used for gaming?
Q. Also what is better lcd or LED?

A. LED is better, both have the same screen hence liquid crystal display (LCD), but LEDs (light emitting diodes) back the lighting on a LED backlit tv and that makes for a better picture.

As for size that's up to you. I've played on 22" monitor, 32" tv, 46" tv, 58" tv. It's always the same game.

Is There A Difference Between Analog and Digital Monitors ?
Q. I bought a flat panel analog monitor along with a new computer from Dell. I thought I was only going to use the computer to surf the net and word processing, but I actually got interested in games. Dell also sells a flat panel "UtraSharp" Digital Monitor. I've read mixed opinions. Some say there is no difference between analog and digital. So should I cough up some money for a digital monitor to enhance my game play. Is it worth the money?? Is the "UtraSharp" name misleading?

A. Digital monitors are superior to equivalent Analog Monitors. The first reason being color reproduction. Digital monitors don't suffer from the white washout that analog monitors tend to have. They also reproduce the actual colors properly and to a great accuracy then analog. But for gaming your real concern is with the pixel refresh rate of the monitor you are looking at. While LCD's have gotten a lot better, if your refresh rate is to slow you will see ghosting on your screen.

Ghosting is really annoying when you are playing fast games with a lot of motion. I would say any monitor in general that has a refresh of 9ms to 15ms is probably fine for gaming. Though I would check game site reviews of the monitor. I would also say look at www.newegg.com for a good selection of LCD's at a good price.

UltraSharp doesn't have to mean anything, it just has to be a bit better then their standard monitor. Just find a monitor with a good resolution 19" monitor should have atleast 1280x1024 native support. Hope this helps.

How do i change the display area of an LCD monitor?
Q. Hi,
I have built an lcd monitor into an old iMac g3 case and the old CRT that was in there was convex and also the actual viewable area of the display was less than 15" which was advertised. The casing surrounding the screen now cuts off the corners of the screen and a large section of the taskbar when in windows. Does anyone know a program that I can use to shrink the viewable area of the screen or change the resolution without stretching the image?
Thank You

A. You should really purchase one.. 25 bucks, and the display is on the right side of the screen.. What a waste of money.

Can I use a Step-Down Transformer to lower the output voltage of an AC adapter?

Q. Here is the deal...

I have an IBM LCD monitor that I got on the cheap from Ebay, the issue was that it didn't have a base or a power supply.

Big deal, I thought because the plan was to wall-mount it and I had 6-7 old ac adapters lying around that would have roughly the same voltage and amperage.

So, now that I got it in the mail, I find that it requires a 12v 3.0 amp adapter. Unfortunately, all the adapters I have that provide enough amperage are all 19V or higher.

Back to the question, couldn't I just add a transformer inline with the output cable to step down the voltage to a level that will not fry the monitor?

Where could I find a step-down transformer that small?
The adapters I am looking to use are all old notebook adapters. I imagine these are too well regulated to work considering what you are all telling me.

The main point of this was to figure out a way to do it and avoid having to buy the adapter outright. There is a good level of satisfaction knowing that you were able to avoid spending money by doing things yourself.
I found a 15v 4A adapter, but again it is a notebook adapter. Looks like I will have to suck it up and buy a new one, unless anyone has any other ideas...

A. It depends.
If the adapters you have generate a regulated DC output, then trying to reduce the voltage by running the AC side off a transformer isn't going to be successful.

However, if the adapter produces an unregulated DC output, or an AC output, then if you can find the correct transformer it should work. For example, using a 24V adapter with a transformer sold to run 120V appliances off a 240V mains would give you the 2:1 ratio that you need. You might have to do some wiring. If the output of the adapter is AC, the step-down transformer can go on either the mains side or the output side of the adapter. If the output of the adapter is DC, you would have to put the step-down on the mains side.

I would be a little careful here, though. It is likely that the monitor needs a regulated DC supply, in which case you have to buy something that supplies the required voltage and current. Usually, monitors that I have seen come with a brick power supply similar to what is used for laptops, and those generally provide a high-current, regulated, DC output.
