How much would a computer like this cost me (custom built)?

Q. So basically, I wish to buy a ridiculously good computer within the next few months, and here are some of the specs I really would like to have:

Something like the: Intel Core i7-3960X 3.3 1 LGA 2011 Processor - BX80619I73960X (basically, a CPU processor that will be top of the market for the next 5-10 years)

2 (or more) 2TB+ (or 4+ if they are 1TB) 15000 rpm (or something close, preferably)

32GB RAM+ (Possible the Corsair 32GB (4 x 8GB) Vengeance 1866mHz PC3 15000 240-pin DDR3 SDRAM Quad Channel Kit 32 CMZ32GX3M4X1866C10 or something similiar)

Graphics card such as the: (AMD Radeon HD 6990) or maybe the (ATI Radeon HD 5970)

1 32" LCD Monitor (Such as the Samsung 320MP-2 32") and 2 24" (Maybe ASUS VS248H-P 24-Inch Monitor)

Windows 7 OS

And finally, a Shell with enough fans capable of keeping this computer from exploding
This was a lot more of a *are these good parts, and if so, how much would the top end parts cost* (such as the shell) instead of yea, I want this computer with these exact parts which I visited and saw the price that I'm to dumb to add up.

By the way, for "n/a," yea, I sure as hell can afford this. FYI I'm a professional computer programmer and probably make more money in a month than you do in a year (Just assuming since you've answered 3000+ questions on Answers) and I don't really work with hardware so I don't know this stuff all that well...

Thanks everyone else for your help :)

A. Well, no processor will be "top of the market" for more than about a year. Something newer and faster will inevitably come along. That said, you *can* build a machine that will more than meet your computing needs for the next 5-10 years, assuming those needs don't change.

Your system comes to $5,372.83 (not including shipping) on NewEgg.com and includes the following items:

- Intel Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition Sandy Bridge-E 3.3GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) LGA 2011 130W Six-Core Desktop Processor BX80619i73960X

- COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus RR-B10-212P-G1 "Heatpipe Direct Contact" Long Life Sleeve 120mm CPU Cooler (the LGA 2011 processors don't include heat sinks/fans)

- COOLER MASTER RR-ACCY-2011-R1 Intel LGA2011 Retention Bracket for Hyper 212 EVO & Hyper 212 Plus

- ASUS Sabertooth X79 LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

- G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9Q-16GBXL (two sets of 4 x 4GB, for a total of 32GB across 8 slots)

- MSI R7970-2PMD3GD5 Radeon HD 7970 3GB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card (the Radeon 5970 isn't state-of-the-art anymore; imagine it in 5-10 years!)

- CORSAIR Professional Series Gold AX1200 1200W 80Plus Gold Certified Power Supply

- Crucial M4 CT256M4SSD2 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (for Windows and your applications)

- Western Digital Caviar Black WD2002FAEX 2TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive (two of these, for your data storage; you really don't need 15,000 RPM drives for data storage, even for HD video encoding)

- COOLER MASTER HAF 932 Advanced RC-932-KKN5-GP Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case (more fans than you can shake a stick at)

- LITE-ON Blu-ray Burner with 3D Playback SATA iHBS212-08 LightScribe Support

- DoubleSight DS-307W Black 30" 7ms HDMI Widescreen Wide Screen LCD Monitor with IPS Panel Techology (didn't find any 32" monitors)

- ASUS VS248H-P Black 24" HDMI LED Backlight Widescreen LCD Monitor (two of 'em)

- Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit - OEM

Hope that helps!

DSLR Recommendations?

Q. Need a little advice here. I am semi-literate in DSLR terminology and use and I think enough so to make at least a relatively informed comparison between products but I am very inexperienced with them none the less.

My father is planning on buying a new DSLR that he intends to use to take landscape photographs with the highest possible detail. He is not a photographer and not experienced, his requirements are high build quality, the unit must be able to keep dirt out as best as possible and it may well get wet, also, though I'm fairly sure he'd be hard pressed to perceive the extra quality, he is insistent upon very high sensitivity and quality. So far he is focusing his comparison upon canon 40d. it's equivalent in Nikon (I've forgotten the name) and the Nikon D700, the last one is one he looked at and had some advice on and he was told it was a professional camera that throws you in the deep end and is not easy on amateurs though my father tends to like to buy things given that type of description regardless of whether or not it's best suited because he tends to think it will be the best overall product because it is high range and high price.

He seems to be willing to spend any between 1000 to 2000 Pounds Sterling on it, though I'm rather hoping I can convince not to go quite so off the rails on something he's unlikely to use very often, anyway what camera (any camera not just the ones I mentioned) do you think would be good for this type of photography with an amateur behind the lens?
Seems to be some controversy over built in image stabilization and lens built stabilization, with where I am in my research and knowledge though not experience I'm inclined to believe that image stabilization is better built into the lens for minimal interference to the end result. Aside from the convenience of working with any lens, does any have any reason to recommend image stabilization built within the camera body?

A. The D700 is a wonderful camera if you want or need a full frame sensor. Here are some of the features:
12.1 megapixel full-frame sensor (8.45µm pixel pitch)
Image Sensor Cleaning (vibration) *
ISO 200 - 6400 (with boost up to ISO 25600 and down to ISO 100)
Also supports DX lenses, viewfinder automatically masks (5.1 megapixels with DX lens)
14-bit A/D conversion, 12 channel readout
Same ultra-fast startup and shutter lag as D3
Nikon EXPEED image processor (Capture NX processing and NR algorithms, lower power)
New Kevlar / carbon fibre composite shutter with 150,000 exposure durability *
Multi-CAM3500FX Auto Focus sensor (51-point, 15 cross-type, more vertical coverage)
Auto-focus tracking by color (using information from 1005-pixel AE sensor)
95% coverage, 0.72x magnification viewfinder *
Auto-focus calibration (fine-tuning), fixed body or up to 20 separate lens settings
Scene Recognition System (uses AE sensor, AF sensor)
Picture Control image parameter presets
5 frames per second continuous with auto-focus tracking*
Optional MB-D10 Battery Pack (same as D300), increases burst rate to 8 fps *
UDMA compatible single CF card slot *
3.0" 922,000 pixel LCD monitor
Live View with either phase detect (mirror up/down) or contrast detect Auto Focus
Virtual horizon indicates if camera is level (like an aircraft cockpit display)
HDMI HD video output
'Active D-Lighting' (adjusts metering as well as applying D-Lighting curve)
Detailed 'Control Panel' type display on LCD monitor, changes color in darkness
Magnesium alloy body with connections and buttons sealed against moisture
Improved Info display on main screen *
DPreview said of this camera "The D700 joins the D3 as a fully-fledged 'professional' model; it has the same tank-like build quality "

The D300 is in the price range and also a great camera with superior photos with an APS-c sized sensor.. It has a flexible program mode and auto white balance and auto ISO so you can use almost automatic. It does have more options and more features to learn. It also has an aperature priority mode, shutter speed priority mode, and full manual. It does not have programed modes like Auto, Portrait, Landscape, Children, Night etc. These auto modes tend to be limiting and many people outgrow using them anyway. So Nikon does not put them on any of the high end cameras.

Nikon and canon put the image stabilization in the lens. Some other manufacturers it in the body. In lens system work smoother and faster with less impact on focus times. So that is why the two largest camera manufacturers went with in lens systems for stabilization.

So either of these he could start out shooting in program and then then use the other setting as he gets more comfortable with him. If he does not want that level the D60 while it does not give you the features of the D300 or D700 gives you all of the features most entry and mid range photographers use and it would give you more money for lenses and such. for landscape he is definitely going to want a good fast wide angle lens.

Email me if I can help

Additional on image stabilization From the Canon white paper this explains some of why Canon and Nikon chose in lens. The same argument for Nikons VR over the in body systems would hold true, hope it helps

"Some of Canons competitors have chosen to use in-body image stabilization. The technique involves moving the image sensor in a controlled fashion, based on signals from movement detecting sensors in the camera body. The obvious advantage of this system is that users have some sort of stabilization available with almost any lens they connect to the body. Short focal length lenses require smaller sensor deflections; 24 or 28 mm lenses might need only 1 mm or so. Longer lenses necessitate much greater movement; 300 mm lenses would have to move the sensor about 5.5 mm (nearly 1/4) to achieve the correction Canon gets with its IS system at the same focal length. This degree of sensor movement is beyond the range of current technology. Short and 'normal' focal length lenses need stabilization much less often than long lenses, so the lenses that need the most help get the least."

Added: and again a bit more on the image stabilization controversy
http://www.cheapshooter.com/2007/09/03/in-camera-image-stabilization-cant-trump-lens-technology/

And Nikons View on it
"(Image Stabilization) in the lens effectively corrects blur in the finder as well as in the image itself. A clear view makes it easier to capture your subject in the focus frame and confirm photo composition.
On the other hand, with cameras that correct the image blur by adjusting an image sensor (cameras that correct image blur inside the camera body), the image in the finder remains blurred." - Nikon
We probably will not decide here which works better and they both work to some degree but I do love a good debate on this type of thing ~grin~

Can LCD Monitor on Canon ESO 20D can be used as a Viewfinder?
Q. I did not see it in a Manuel and it is very hard to take photo through the little viewfinder eyepiece.

A. Live view on dSLR's is a relatively new thing that did not show up until about 2008 or 2009 on some dSLR's but NOT all.

The Canon EOS 50D was the first of that series to have live view. 40D or older do not have that feature

As far as using the viewfinder, photographers have been using them for over 50 years without a problem. You may have to refine your shooting skills to make using it more intuitive

what is the best 19 inch LCD monitor below USD300 and does anyone know a good review site for Samsung 940BW?
Q. thanks max, but i need a site and I need a model for less than 300USD. need a specific answer. thanks
conrad seems to be the winner here, I agree with the DVI option as a must. so any future answers must keep that as a requirement. thanks

A. Here's a ViewSonic for $217, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824116353 and the Samsung 930B for $189 (after rebates), http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824001063

Here's another ViewSonic for $260, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824116375

And here's a similar Samsung to what you were looking for, this one is the 940BF for $270, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824001230

I would say stick to Samsung, Viewsonic or NEC other than that you have plenty of choices and I stuck with monitors that had DVI.

Whats the Best LCD 22- 24" Monitor for the Cheapest Price?

Q. I'm looking to get rid of my CRT, but money is the biggest obstacle to doing this. Not sure that getting a used LCD makes sense, but that is an option.

Seems like the dollar devaluation has taken it's toll on LCD prices, and not sure if cheap prices are realistic at this point. Can't afford $250, but would still like a good view, and reliable electronics - wide screen preferable.

I don't care if the name is "Cheapo Tech" as long as the internals are up to snuff.

I have no idea the refresh rate, or pixelation that will do me best. I don't need top of the line, but don't want to purchase obsolete technology.

Running a P4 with 15 pin video currently - XP

A. Morning,

The ONLY GOOD monitor under 250$ will be this one here.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009094

You can see it has over 1,000 reviews on newegg with 91% being 5 or 4 outta 5.

Its a fantastic monitor (I own 2 myself).

As I said within that price range you won't find anything else that large at this time yet unless you buy very poor brands, in which case you will be upset with your decision.

LCD computer monitors?
Q. I am in my sophmore year at college and i am really getting into using many differernt programs in the visual world like, AutoCad, maya, and 3Ds stuido max. I am working on a 15in. labtop now and i am looking to by a 19 or maybe 21+ in. lcd monitor to use. I was wondering what specs i should be looking for and whats good like Brightness, Contrast Ratio, Display Colors, Display Type. So if anyone knows anything about these, could you tell me whats a good or an ok spec. I am looking for something pretty cheap, like under $200. thanks for the help
and responce time

A. Get the biggest LCD monitor you can for the price. They're all pretty much the same in that price range you're talking about so the rest of the specs won't matter much.

A good monitor for consoles?

Q. I'm in need of a new monitor for video editing, PS3 console gaming, and as a good display here is what Im looking for:

I have a 15 inch 2012 macbook pro that i invested heavily in as a student, and my primary focus for a monitor is one that I will be satisfied for years to come, until I decide it's time to move on. As for price, I will go as high as it takes, but since I'm a kid under $200 is looking very nice for me. I don't have a lot of know how on gaming monitors and I need one that can work with an el gato capture card, as well as has the proper cables/inputs for my mac. I've been told for console gaming you'd want to stay off of a monitor and for tv, but I think thats BS because computer monitors have a lot lower input lag then a tv would, which is important for a fast game like call of duty. But I really dont know, My primary need is a good screen to edit on, but it needs to be able to work with my el gato/ps3 setup I got going. Links, youtube videos, and thoughts on your own brand of monitor would be greatly appreciated. I don't know where to start my research, maybe someone can steer me in the right direction

I found this monitor, and it seems to be really good. A little too good for the price. I'm not sure what I'm missing with it. If you guys can check it out, tell me what you think: Thanks!!

"No Signal" but computer tower is running normally?

Q. I recently built a computer and installed windows 7 (32-bit) on it and it worked fine for a few hours. Next time I turned it on it wouldnt register my keyboard or my 24" BENQ LED screen - The screen says "No signal" and my computer tower runs fine, the lights are on and the disc drive and fans work. sometimes it randomly registers the screen which makes me think it could be 2 things:
1) The Graphics card or motherboard is faulty
2) There is some kind of connection problem and sometimes a connection is made so that the screen and tower can communicate.

Please help!?

My specs are:
Motherboard - Gigabyte 990FXA-D3
CPU - AMD FX Black edition 6 -core
Graphics - ATI Radeon 6850
RAM - 2 x 4GB G-skill DDR3
I have tried a different screen and the same problem happens, I have checked both the pins on the DVI cable to see if they are misaligned I also tried VGA and still nothing. Inside the computer I checked that everything was connected tighty. My graphics card is PCIE so theres no onboard graphics, the one I have slots in.

A. Sounds like a display issue.

When you do get the screen to work, do you see the Windows background or is it a boot screen?

Do you have a video card built into the motherboard or is it a PCI-E card which slots into the motherboard?

couple of basic things to check first are these:

1. Unplug all power and data cables from the screen. Check that the connection pins at each end of the cable are not bent or misaligned.

2. Reseat the cables back into place and make sure they are connected and tight. Same goes for the power cable.

Another thing you can try is to connect another monitor to the computer and see what happens. If it does the same thing then you have a cable or hardware problem with the VGA port.

If it works then you have a problem with your LCD screen.

Edit: Monday 23 Jan 2012

Well you might have a different problem altogether.

Take out the video card and turn the computer on without it connected. You should get "Post Beep" error from the motherboard (These are audible sounds coming from the system speaker)

If not. Shutdown and remove the RAM and turn the PC back on again. Again, you should get "Post Beep" errors (Although this will be a different sequence of audible sounds)

If not then your motherboaurd and possibly the CPU has failed and not the video card (Although I would still have it checked)

If you do get post beep errors with the video card removed but no display when it is installed, then the video card has failed and will need to be replaced.

Cheers,

Rob

Here is the best Budget decent gaming PC I can give you at that price range and I wouldn't recommend anything less bec for me "decent" means that you will be able to play ALL GAMES on high-max settings with the appropriate resolution.

What I have given you is the I3-2100(best budget gaming processor) and the HD 6850 (best budget GPU) that can let you play all games on high settings, some on max settings (depending on resolution and game requirements).

The HD 6850 is currently ranked #15 overall in benchmark, a step higher than the GTX 560 (ranked #16) yet significantly much cheaper =P

BTW, the monitor is 1080p

Glad to help =P

LCD Monitor vs LCD TV ?

Q. I'm buying the display screen for my ps3 but I don't know which is better and what are the differences ?
Price is not major factor, also are monitors usually smaller than TVs ?

A. It depends on how important you think graphics mean to you. An LCD TV is bigger than most monitors but sometimes have issues with input lag, which is how long it takes to display an image on the screen so the tv can process the image and make the resulting image more vivid and colorful. An LCD monitor, however, do not process the images, they merely show it, which results in no input lag, but typical monitors are smaller. So, the bottom line is if you sit farther away from your tv and like colorful picture quality, than an LCD tv is for you. If you sit closer to the tv and like fast gameplay, than an LCD monitor is for you.

Just got hd lcd monitor want to use it as tv.?
Q. Hey lol first off ill start by saying im not very technical when it comes to this stuff, but basically my buddy justbought a brand new hd tv (huge) for his ps3 and well as just tv in general, well on the road he used a westing house l2410nm lcd monitor for his ps3, but since he got that he gave it to me. I don't want to use it as just a ps3 hook up, but also would like to use it as my general purpose tv. Somone told me get tv tuner and somone said get hd cable box... not quite sure what each is and their price or how i use them could anyone point me in the right direction and elaborate more on what i need to do. ( i have no intentions of using the monitor for my comp cause i have a laptop. Thanks.

A. I Checked out your monitor at the manufacturers website, and I looked at all the ports it has. I hate to have to put anyone down, but the post on C Net tells you a way that works on all monitors, but it really difficult and requires a desktop computer. In your case you will need some sort of a conversion box if you do not have one. If you want HDTV, you will have to subscribe for HD service and the box comes with it. Below are all the ways you can have television:

Depending on how you get your television, there is a few ways you can hook it up.

If you have tivo or another DVR, or if you have a VCR or DVD recorder that you use to record TV, you can go ahead and set up your monitor without a box as mentioned in the end of this answer.

If you pay for your TV service you either have cable or satellite, you will need a set top box (a box with its own remote, in some cases the remote may also work for you TV), if you do not have one, you could call your service provider for one.

If you do not pay to watch tv, you either have an antenna, or cable provided by an apartment or office, If you have an antenna, you need to buy a digital converter box if you do not have one already. You will need to buy one if you have an antenna anyway because tv goes digital in June. If you have cable, ask the person who pays for it for a set top box.

Once you get a set top box, or a digital converter box, if you do not have one already, there are a couple of ways to hook it up:

The easiest way is to use a composite cable( It is made up of a yellow cable, a red cable, and a white cable, and almost everything is compatible with it) and just plug in each cable into the ports on your box and monitor.

If you want better image quality, you can use a component cable or an hdmi cable if the box has the ports for it. An HDMI cable has one plug, and the port is rectangular, with no screws, you just plug it in, A component cable has 5 plugs, Red, White, another Red, Green, and a blue one, one pair of red and white should be seperated, or have somthing different about it.

what is the best 19 inch LCD monitor below USD300 and does anyone know a good review site for Samsung 940BW?
Q. thanks max, but i need a site and I need a model for less than 300USD. need a specific answer. thanks
conrad seems to be the winner here, I agree with the DVI option as a must. so any future answers must keep that as a requirement. thanks

What's a good, cheap widescreen LCD monitor with DVI connection for use with a Mac mini?

Q. So I wanted to know whats a good cheap widescreen monitor that will work with the new Mac mini?

How do you like it or why don't you like it?

I was wanting something within the $175 price range and at least 19 inches.

Thanks to all.

A. Look around for Acer.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010190020%2050001146&name=Acer%20America

They offer very good, and relatively cheap monitors.
For $175 you could get like a 22" Acer, with brilliant color quality.

I have a 19" Samsung monitor, it was a bit pricier than the Acer ones, but its quality is quite a bit better.
Basically, bigger contrast ratio is better, like mine has 3000:1, and thats better than like 750:1 or 1000:1 or 2000:1.
And lower response time is better, mine has 2millisecond response, which is very fast.
Most of the Acers have 5ms, which is fine, but lower=better.

can you use this monitor with the mac mini 320gb?
Q. http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Displays/Monitors/TFT+24+%2B/Samsung+Lavender+SM-P2450H+24%22+True+HD+Widescreen+LCD+Monitor+-+Glossy+Black+?productId=39456

and if it works do you need to buy something more and what do you need to buy

A. Yes you can.

The Mac Mini (I'm assuming you are talking about the latest Mac Mini model) has an HDMI port.

You will need to buy an HDMI cable to connect the Mac Mini's HDMI port to that monitor's HDMI input.

Should I get a wide screen lcd monitor?

Q. I am shopping for an lcd computer monitor. Wide screen is one of my options. Will I have trouble with the resolution? The monitor's listed resolution is 1440 by 900, but the max resolution on my four year old computer is 1280 by 1024. I would choose a standard screen rather than install additional equipment. Also, my DVD player has what they call an s-plug and a digital coaxial output, and the monitorsw have DVI inputs. Are these compatible? Thanks to any of you with helpful information.

A. for sure. go for LCD monitors. reasons:
1) save alot of space (you can even hang it on the wall) and light to move
2) easier on the eyes (LCD don't rapily flash the image, unlike the old CRTs. less eye and head achs.)
3) no screen saver program nessary (LCD don't have "screen burn-in" problem. CRTs and plasma do. screen saver will slow down or interupt another program thats already running)

go for Wide Screen if you can. reasons:
1) more desk room for editing programs (for example like photoshop, you can have the little tool windows on the side where your standard screen wouldn't have, thus more canvus space)
2) viewing 2 windows side by side is better (have 2 windows open, right click on an empty part of taskbar, click "Tile Windows Vertically". the 2 windows are wider and easier to see simutaniously)
3) and of course, more suitable for wide screen movies

as for the resolution problem, you should do more research. what i think is the PC (with Windows XP) will detect and find the capiable resolution of the new monitor and spit out a new list that you can choose. but i may be wrong so double check that.

ok, these input/output ports is alittle more complicated. the biggest difference, other than shape and size of the port head, is Analog or Digital Signal that runs through it. the PC, LCD monitor, and DVD player all handle and deal with digital, so it's best if the signal still digital through out the way between them.
Analog Ports: VGA (15 pin) / S-Video
Digital Ports: DVI
Digital Coaxial output is for Audio only. CRT monitors only handles analog ports.

Apple LCD monitor or Dell LCD monitor?
Q. Which one is consider better between Apple monitor and Dell LCD monitor? I think I'm going to buy DELL U2412M. But I've heard users say that the Apple is very vibrant, and specialized for photo video editing.

A. Apple monitor still better in my opinion, but in the other hand Dell offer more reasonable price. If you a person who like price performance then go with Dell.

Looking For New LCD Monitor... E-IPS?

Q. I am in the market for a new lcd monitor. After doing research i found out there are 3 types of panels... one has a bad refresh rate so i will ignore but the other 2 are TN and IPS. TN is the cheap panel because it has a crappy viewing angle. e-ips is the cheaper of the ips and has a good viewing angle. Many sites don't mention this in their descriptions(...really annoying) and I can't seem to find a decently priced e-ips lcd screen. I don't want to spend $500+ I heard the Dell UltraSharp 2209WA is good and cheap with ips but I can't find it at the $200ish price that is mentioned online, plus i'd very much like a 1080p resolution to connect a ps3 or xbox360. Does the monitor I'm looking for simply not exist or am I unaware of some cool techy site that can help me?

In conclusion does anyone know where I can find a 1080p or higher monitor with ips (preferably e-ips because its cheaper) in the low 20's inch range that is decently priced? Thanks!

A. ips screens are probably not that good for xbox. check out newegg. most of the 178 degree viewing angle screens that they sell are ips.

Computer Monitor LCD vs LED and TN vs IPS panels?
Q. My monitor for the computer is starting to fail and i'm planning to buy a new one.

I've been doing some research on whether or not I should get a LCD or LED monitor, many say that LED is better than LCD in many aspects including color ratios, respond time, energy usage and life expectancy. Even though the currently breaking monitor I have now is a LCD and the display is great and has been lasting for nearly 5-6 years.

My main problem is actually the difference between a monitor with a TN panel vs an IPS panel, I found out about these 2 things during my search and it sounds to me like TN panels are the kind of screens that uses a smooth sheet of plastic as the screen's surface, while an IPS panel is one that has a nice glossy glass surface, am i right?

The one that I've been using up until now has a glossy glass surface and I prefer this kind, because my dad has one with the plastic surface and when looking at it from the sides the color changes dramatically and I dont like that.

I'm basically trying to confirm if "TN panel" and "IPS panel" is the right name in which to refer to the 2 differences previously mentioned before I go and buy a monitor online, due to the fact that the images they provide sometimes cannot clearly show whether the screen has a glass surface or plastic

A. First I've gotta clear this up before we discuss displays, a lot of people get this misconception that LCDs and LEDs compete with each other. The thing is though that an LCD is the type of display, while LEDs are a type of backlighting. A display with LED backlighting will also have an LCD display so they don't compete with each other.

For displays, there are CRTs and LCDs. Basically you can't really buy a CRT anymore so you have to buy an LCD. The only advantages a CRT has over an LCD is the framerate, though even now you can just buy a 3D LCD display that can display 2D content at 120Hz.

Then the backlighting, there are CCFL (cold cathodes) and LEDs. There are two main differences with cold cathodes and LEDs, number one the amount of space they take up (LED displays are very thin) and the amount of power they use. LEDs use much less power than a cold cathode. LEDs are better to have and if you can get an LED backlit display for around the same price as a CCFL lit display it's worth it, though it's not something hugely important as it doesn't really make it look any better.

And finally is the panel, there are TN panels and IPS panels. Honestly there is not really any point in getting a TN panel for a monitor right now. Pretty much every IPS panel display will look better than any TN panel display. Additionally, an IPS panel has a much higher viewing angle like you said, and if you touch it it doesn't distort the picture like a TN panel does, that's why every touch screen device needs an IPS panel. There are also very affordable IPS panel monitors out there, especially the ones from Asus. They're about the same price as other TN panel displays so they're a great deal.

This is a great monitor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236122
There is also a 24" version on Amazon.

Samsung Touch Of Color T220HD 22-inch LCD HDTV Monitor compatible with windows 7?

Q. has anyone ever had an issue with the monitor listed above working with windows 7?

A. All monitors work with Windows 7, it's the Graphics card you have to worry about, if it supports HD output or not.

Monitors are standard display except for the quality, input type and the refresh rate.

LCD Monitor calibration?
Q. Does anyone know a really god place or downloadable software i can use to calibrate this new alienware 1080p native resolution monitor?

A. You really need hardware to properly calibrate a monitor. Something like Spyder:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/ColorVision-S3X100-Spyder3Express-PC-MAC/dp/B002OCF57K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1294076210&sr=8-2
or Pantone Huey:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pantone-MEU101-Huey/dp/B000CR78C4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1294076283&sr=8-2

They'd have you think that recalibration is necessary frequently, but for all but the most demanding uses (e.g. professional photography, in which case you need to consider your room environment and ambient lighting too), you probably just need a profile (.icm or .icc file). You could just borrow such a device if you can find someone who has one.

Having said that, Widows 7 does have some built-in calibration capabilities: see Control Panel, Appearance and Personalization, Display, Calibrate color.

Windows (all versions) comes with a variety of colour profiles, one of which may well improve your monitor display. Some LCD monitors have very strong saturation. Profiles are in C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color and WideGamutRGB.icc may be helpful for you.

See "To enable or disable calibration loading by Windows" in http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-color-management-settings for how to apply colour profiles and calibrate colour in general.

lcd monitor turn on only 5 sec?

Q. and screen black power is on

A. It's shot (bang bang) and dead. I'm assuming the power is going right back off after 5 seconds, which I'm further rubbing my magic 8 ball to means something in the secondary supply bus is pulling too much current the second it tries to illuminate the lcd xy boards.

Of course, when people give super generic questions, it makes it completely impossible for even the smartest people to answer them.

Off hand, go ahead and do one of the following 3:

if it's under 32" and out of warranty chuck it and buy a new one
if it's under 32" and in warranty, take it back to the store, and plan on buying a new lcd if they won't exchange it on the spot (no one repairs smaller lcd's these days -- which means it'll sit around somewhere on a shelf until the powers that be see fit to issue a credit for a new lcd)
if it's bigger (vastly bigger) and out of warranty you might wanna call some local tv shops, repairs can run from around 300-1600$++, which is why i'm leaning towards chuck it and buy another one.
Next time, buy an extended warranty also, as lcd's do die a lot more often than classical tube-tvs with a cathode.

Projector or LCD HDTV? for games, monitor, television UNDER:$400?
Q. I am wondering if i should get a LCD HDTV or a Projector non HD since there too expensive.
BUDGET:under $400

I would get the LCD off of Craigslist, amazon,or a local chainstore. Most likely off of amazon or craigslist

And the Projector off Craigslist or Ebay.

I would be useing One of the 2 depending on what i get for Computer games and Internet,Xbox 360,and as a TV that I would use often everyday. Lets say 12 hours a day to be on the safe side. I think the only things that i would use the HD for is My XBOX 360 or PS3 and Maybe my computer if i get a new VIDEO CARD

I would like to know the PROS VS CONS on haveing a LCD HDTV VS a REGULER PROJECTOR (no HD). Assume i would be getting both of them used.

What should i loook for in a used projector? are they are to repair the projector? Should i get some paint or a screen. I heard there is paint that i could paint on the wall that is better then a screen?

A. get a 32 inch samsung LCD or Panasonic LCD both 1080p you wont be dissapointed but idk i tried my ps3 on my friends Sony Bravia 1080p 32 inch and only 300 bucks in best buy and it looked amazing
