What is the best LCD monitor for my MacBook Pro?

Q. I have a MacBook Pro 13" and I am looking to purchase an external LCD HD monitor. I would like it to be 30". What is the best one that I can get while keeping the price under $400?

A. Presently, there is no such thing as a 30" monitor that costs under $400.

30-inch monitors are usually very high-resolution monitors that do 2560x1600, and those cost upwards of $1000.

Unless you want a 32-inch LCD HDTV, those might be had for $400, but their resolution is far lower, usually 1366x768. There are also LCD HDTVs that can do 1920x1080 (aka 1080p High Definition), but you would be hard-pressed to find one of those for under $400.

what do i look for when buying a widescreen monitor?
Q. Im looking at buying a widescreen monitor, and i want a good deal but i dont wanna sacrafice too much quality for a good price. when looking through them they show at least 3 main descriptive features, Resolution, Contrast Ratio, and # cd/m2 Brightness, how do these 3 affect the picture quality and what numbers are better to look for?

A. I'm going to assume you are going for a 22" or below monitor because if you're buying 24" monitor and up.....wow you must have a lot of money because those monitors cost $500 and up.

Anyway, a number of 1000:1 is a very good contrast ratio for under 22" monitors. Actually, 800:1 is good enough. There are some monitors that have 1600:1 ratio, but find out if this is a "fake" ratio or not
for resolution, multiply the two numbers. The bigger number means more pixels. More pixels is ALWAYS good :)
but a 1400x900 monitor on a 20" has more condensed pixels than a 1400x900 monitor on 22". This means your picture will be better but you'll have 2 inches less screen (the inches are measured from corner to corner)
300 cd/m2 is great. I actually took a look at some monitors at Best Buy yesterday (went to buy a laptop backpack for myself), all of the ones showcased had 300 cd/m2 and they looked good. If you buy any higher I guarantee you won't notice any difference.
don't forget delay. 5 milliseconds response time is good but if you can get lower (I've seen 2ms), that's even better

In my opinion, the most important details to look for are:
1.) Price. I've seen 19" LCD monitors go for as low as $130 at Best Buy and other stores. 22" for $180
2.) pixels (resolution). I intend on buying a 22" (1680 x 1050)
3.) cd/m and response time aren't really that important, you won't notice much if you compare these two. Go with the numbers I mentioned earlier (300cd/m2 and 5ms)
4.) brand (although it doesn't really matter that much....most companies re-sell other companies' monitors)

What's the difference between buying an LCD monitor and an LCD Television today?

Q. Because I'm thinking of getting an LCD monitor for my computer but why not just get an LCD TV and use it as my computer monitor among other things? Whats the difference?

A. There are numerous differences between lcd monitors and lcd tv sets today. The biggest difference is resolution. LCD monitors have way higher resolution than HDTVs. Most consumer HDTVs max out at 1920x1080 pixels (1080p aka "full HD") while common monitors with screen sizes 24-30" are capable of 1900x1200 or even 2560x1600 (that's way more resolution than your common 1080p tv set). Basically, LCD monitors have better pixel pitch since they have a lot more pixels at a much smaller screen size (compare a 1920x1080 50" with a 2560x1600 resolution 30" monitor).

Next is panel technology. Most manufacturers of LCD monitors use TN panels, while almost all LCD tvs use something like MVA (not sure about ips). Basically, TN is cheap and the monitors reflect this in their prices. TN gives fast response times while MVA/IPS allows excellent color reproduction as well as preventing colors from shifting when viewed at an angle. However, there are many mva/ips LCD monitors too, it's just that they're usually much much more expensive.

LCD monitors also usually do not have tv tuners but some, like the samsung T240HD do come with a buil-in tuner and a remote control.

Before buying, try to research first on the LCD tv's input lag and response times, since these will be the factors most readily apparent in everyday computer use.

How Good is LED monitor Compare to LCD Monitor For photo Editing and Gaming?
Q. I have thinking to Purchase LED or LCD monitor monitor for my photo editing purpose but also for GAming, but my question which are the best for editing?

A. For those who don't know, LED monitors are just LCD monitors that use bright white LEDs instead of fluorescent bulbs as the backlight.

The main advantage of LED monitors is that they consume much less power than traditional monitors. They can also have improved contrast ratios since LEDs can be dimmed over a wider range of brightness (the backlight is dimmed when displaying dark colors).

For accurate color reproduction when photo editing, either LED or LCD technology would be fine. The best monitor for the job would depend on other factors such as panel type. A more expensive IPS panel would be better than a cheaper TN panel that would have significant color shifting when the viewing angle changed.

How can I safely clean my LCD computer screen?

Q. I have a 20" Acer computer screen that has a bunch of little spots on it. I've cleaned it with Windex (sprayed onto a paper towel, don't worry) but the spots keep coming back. What are some good ways to clean it, or where can I pick up some wipes specifically designed to clean LCD monitors? Thanks in advance.

A. You can use cleaners that are used for glasses or camera lenses....

What is the best way to clean my comp monitor screen?
Q. I have a NEC flatscreen LCD monitor. It has greasy fingerprints on it. What is the best way to clean it without doing any damage to the screen?

A. Do NOT use:

Tissues - they will break up and leave fibers on the screen.

Paper towels - they are abrasive.

Dish detergent - this too is abrasive.

Use a soft cloth (cotton or microfiber) dampened with a little water (bottled water if you live in a hard water area) If you need a bit more cleaning power use a soft soap solution, such as a plain liquid hand soap.

Any sprays or wipes specifically meant to clean monitor screens or eyeglasses will work too. Just don't let any liquid run down the screen. Water and electronics do not mix well.

I have seen monitor screens totally trashed because they were cleaned with Windex and paper towels.

Is there a chance that this busines idea of mine could work? 10 points for best details?
Q. I was thinking of buying LCD monitors (around 22 inches) and placing them inside popular cafes or stores (while giving the owner some money, ofcourse) and then letting other businesses place a small 10 seconds advertisements on those screens for a fee.

Is there a chance that this idea could work?

A. They already have these in some stores. I suggest adding something like the news as well since most people won't pay for ads.
Here are some other ideas:
- Look in Burger King (Some have tv's like this) with ads
- Put their menu playing between ads
- Temperature
- Webcams(earth cam feeds) or security cameras.
Also I recommend hiring a programmer for this.
Depending on your budget this might end up being expensive.
Good idea though!

What 1080p LCD monitor is the best for me?

Q. I want a 1920x1080 LCD monitor. 16:9 aspect ratio. A low response time and a high contrast ratio. With no less than 1 VGA (analog) port, 1 DVI (digital) port. And a HDMI port if there is one would also be nice, but i dont need it. And my budget is around 200 but i will consider going over that.

A. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010190020%201106217860&name=1920%20x%201080

How can I assembel a better desktop computer?
Q. I have minimum knowledge about computer.I want to buy a desktop computer. My budget is 40,000.I want a LCD monitor.160 GB HDD.Intel core 2 duo processor.1GB RAM.How can I assemble these parts in my own hand.OR Is there any person in the computer shop that he can assemble my computer after buying these parts. Please help me.

A. Well, with a budget of "40,000" I'd hope that finding pieces and someone to build them in an instant wouldn't be much of a problem!

Typo's aside, if you have no knowledge of building a computer, go with your instinct and as much as I know it wants to have fun and test it out, I'm sure it also says get someone who knows what the'yre doing.

Computers are very fragile things, you chip, bend, or snap 1 little what seems insignificant piece the entire piece of hardware can be ruined, and a waste of valuable money.

From your list of items you want to order, you seem to have either gotten advice from someone with knowledge, or have some background knowledge of computers.

If you have a friend, let them put it together. If they're experienced shouldn't take them much more than a couple of hours to have it up and running with an OS installed.

You should probably even watch them and learn the tricks of the trade. One thing that I may recommend, if you can afford it, your rig seems pretty decent, upgrade to 2 gigs of DDR2 RAM.

What's the best way to clean an LCD monitor?

Q. My LG LCD monitor is looking kind of dirty. How do I clean it without damaging it?

A. You can use a clean soft lint free cloth (microfiber is great) dry (for simple dust & fingerprints) or dampened with warm or cold water (preferrably distilled, or at least clean water like bottled water), or it is also acceptable to use a mixture of 50% alcohol with 50% cool water (anything else can damage the surface), and follow up with a clean soft lint free cloth to dry. Do not use paper towels or tissues if possible as they can scratch the surface. Be careful not to apply too much pressure on the surface.

I normally use just clean tap water (though if you have hard water (water w/high mineral content) you should use distilled or deionized water) on a soft cloth and dry with soft cloth - works great.

Below I've included a couple of good websites that cover this.

http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-10166_7-6209355-1.html
http://labnol.blogspot.com/2006/11/wipe-clean-lcd-screen-laptop-monitor.html

A microfiber cloth usually works well for dust, fingerprints, etc., but if there are little water type spots on it or stuff that doesn't come off with a microfiber cloth you can take a soft cloth dampened with water and wipe the screen well then dry it off with another soft cloth or the microfiber cloth. If there is some ink or something else that the water doesn't touch, I've heard people use standard wipes, but I'd say go to a store that sells computer supplies and get some special monitor wipes for that purpose. Don't use any glass cleaner or other general household cleaners as they will probably damage the surface.

Best of luck.

What do you guys think of kindles?
Q. How much are they? Are they worth the buy? There's a lot of different brands, which is the best one? How much do you have to pay for books once you own a kindle? I saw one at Barnes & Noble and am very interested. Thank you!

A. Kindle is a specific ereader by Amazon. Barnes & Nobel's ereaders go by the name Nook.

Ebooks are priced similar at both stores and average around $10, usually a bit less than physical books.

Buy a Kindle or Nook Touch if you're most interested in long-run reading. Their E Ink Pearl display is much better than Nook Color's LCD (backlit) screen for reading text. Deciding between a Kindle and Nook Touch: Kindle advantages: keyboard, 3G model available, 4G internal memory, Text-To-Speech, MP3 support. Nook Touch advantages: touch screen, less page-turn flashing, EPUB support, SD memory expansion port, library borrowing now (vs later this year for Kindle).

Buy a Nook Color if you're most interested in apps and games and browsing the web. Reading long-run text is as tolerable as it is with a computer monitor, and the Kindle's and Nook Touch's capabilities in the non-reading areas pale in comparison.

[Buy an iPad if you are ok paying a considerable premium and want the best app experience, the best PDF support, the best web browsing experience, and value color support over E Ink Pearl display's book-like reading experience.]

Pricing (2011-07-29):
Nook Color: $250; Nook Touch: $139;
Kindle WiFi ($139); Kindle WiFi WSO ($114); Kindle 3G ($189); Kindle 3G WSO ($139).

1. WiFi or WiFi+3G: Choose WiFi+3G if you wish to download ebooks or browse the web when away from a WiFi hotspot. An ereader with 3G support will be able to connect like a cell phone. Unlike a cell phone, however, there is no monthly fee for Kindle's 3G service. Note, though, that the web browser on Kindle isn't so great. Also, once an ebook is downloaded, neither WiFi nor 3G is needed to read it.

2. Special Offers or not:

Kindle With Special Offers Pros:
* $25 (WiFi) or $50 (3G) less expensive.
* May save more if special offers are purchased.
* Offers have been sweet so far: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_navbox_kspot_ksupport?nodeId=200671290
* Ads do not show up in the middle of reading an ebook.
* I've heard only praise from those who buy Kindle WSO.

Kindle With Special Offers Cons:
* May just dislike ads in principle, even outside of reading experience.

What is the best LCD monitors for the best price?

Q. I am looking into getting a new LCD monitor so I can take advantage of my 256mb video card with a DVI output. I am wondering if anybody has some good input on which brand and model to get , I like the samsung T220 with it's 20000:1 contrast ratio . Thanks for you input.

A. Yes I can give you some input. For real, no b.s. like on Polls and Surveys. I studied monitors last year extensively, and here are my results:

The two best choices I could find were Viewsonic and Samsung. I went with the Viewsonic 22" because of it's extremely high user satisfaction ratings, the unbelievable warranty it came with, and the price. Samsung was neck-n-neck, with Viewsonic. But the warranty wasn't as good, and they weren't on the market as long so I had no long term performance information to go on. You will never regret buying a Viewsonic anyway. They are not going out of business, and their quality is near the top of the heap. I bought it from COSTCO. If you don't have a membership then I recommend that you get one, because you are going to save the membership fee with the monitor purchase anyway. They have both Samsung and Viewsonic. You can go with the Samsung, if you want. You won't hear complaints from me. I'm just advising you from extensive experience and age (unfortunately), how you can make the best choice. You can see my monitor on my 360. The picture is tiny, but, you can see it.

I am wanting to buy a 22" lcd monitor. Can you give me any useful information about one?

Q. Right now i have a Dell 17" lcd monitor and was wanting a 22" Dell lcd monitor.I only use my computer for about 3 hours a day.Can you give me the pros and cons to buy one or not to buy one.I'm not really a computer genius but i would like to know if i would really benifit from a larger monitor. Thanks

If it means anything i am using a Radeon x300 graphics.

A. you will have a much larger viewing area than a 17 inch, MUCH MUCH MUCH. you iell be able to fit more programs/windows on one screen. if it was me id go for it cuse i just like bigger monitors, and i was in ur position once (or a similar one) and i went for it and was very happy i did. but if you want to save your money, dont get one or wait for a good deal, like i got mine for $200 at bestbuy :). make sure it has at least a 5 ms response time, dvi and vga input, and anything above a 700:1 contrast ratio. and thats its not some cheap brand, get one made by someone like westinghouse, LG, samsung, etc.. not some office depot only brand.
p.s.
if you get this monitor gaming performance (if you game) will be greatly decreased, expecially with that graphics card.

Both have very good reviews on amazon but I would rather have LED but I don't know if I should go for the bigger one since I am planning to get a wii and/or steal my brother's wii from his room.

A. 27" LCD should be fine.

What's the difference between the Dell ST2410 24-inch and the Dell G2410H 24-inch LCD monitors?
Q. Specifically what one would be better for watching movies? I want to get a second monitor that I will ONLY use for watching blu-rays, so what one of these would have better video quality?

A. THe ST2410 has a regular CCFL backlight and an HDMI port and built-in speakers. The G2410H uses more energy-efficient (and longer-life) LED backlight, and does not have HDMI or built-in speakers.

THe G2410 is HDCP-compliant though, which means it can connect to an HDMI device like a Blu-Ray player using a DVI-to-HDMI cable (but you will have to connect a separate set of speakers to the Blu-Ray player to get sound).

Do you think anyone one would buy a 17 inch or 15 inch monitor on ebay?

Q. If so what price should I have it for . I have a 15 inch dell flat panel lcd monitor and a 17 inch viewsonic flat panel lcd monitor. The 17 has a little markk in the corner but its not very noticable.
What price should I and does anyone want to buy it
I had the 15 inch up for 60$ is that too much havent tried the seventeen yet.

A. That would probably get sold. For me, it would depend on all of the computer specs (processor speed, RAM, et cetera).

Can I force a higher resolution on my PC and monitor?

Q. I have a middle of the road eMachines PC with a 22 inch LCD monitor. My resolution settings are the highest they can go right now (1920x1080)

Can I "force" or trick my PC or monitor into a higher resolution setting??? Is this possible and how?

A. No. If it were a CRT monitor, you MIGHT be able to ever slightly at the sacrifice of refresh rate (vertical scan rate), but pushing the hardware to its limits can cause failure.

LCD monitors have one fixed resolution at which everything must be displayed.

Record xbox game play when using a monitor?
Q. I want to buy a 22 inch lcd monitor and hook my xbox 360 to it while also hooking up my dazzle to record. The monitor only has vga and hdmi so how would i connect my dazzle to it and record? BTW i wont be connecting the monitor to a computer only the xbox, so no use in screen recorders or whatever they are.

A. ur need to split the signal then use a component to hdmi/vga converter

Should I buy the Canon T3i or T2i?

Q. I'm buying a new SLR camera, coming from a Sony ax, and I'm set on either a T3i or T2i. I will be primarily using the camera for filming but of course for photography, too. I'm told that it's not worth the extra money to buy the T3i because the T2i is just a good. So which one?

A. If you want a vari-angle 3.0-inch LCD monitor and wireless flash photography get a Canon EOS Rebel T3i. if no want that features get a Canon EOS Rebel T2i.

External/Field Monitor recommendation for focus in videography?
Q. Hey guys, I shoot music videos with my Canon 7D. I often have to adjust my manual focus on a moving subject. However, I have at times found it hard to determine if I have the most accurate focus on the subject on the small LCD screen on the back of the camera. Depending on the environment and space restrictions, it may be difficult to be right behind the camera looking closely at the pixels to see if they are in 100% focus as opposed to like 90%. I am currently researching external/field monitors to attach or mount to my 7d and or tripod. Originally when starting to search, I was looking for a monitor with NATIVE resolution of 1080p, but I'm starting to think that these aren't very common, if made at all. Even some 3,000 monitors are only 800x400 native resolution. The most common high resolution I've seen so far is 1024x600. There are a few exceptions. The really expensive monitors have all of these cool features but I don't believe I will need any of that. I usually shoot a neutral/flat picture style and then do my color grading and editing in post-production with Sony Vegas Pro; so the extra features won't be needed at the time of production. My main purpose of getting an external monitor is to be able to more easily determine if I have maximum focus on my subject. I would not like to spend more than $400 if possible. I believe a 7inch would probably be my best bet with an hdmi connector. Does anyone have recommendations for my situation? Or thoughts on what to consider when researching these external monitors? Will there be a dramatic difference in determining focus in a cheaper 800x400 monitor vs more expensive 1024x600 monitor?

Thanks guys!

A. I've seen these devices reviewed quite a few times here: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/index.shtml

Is it possible to use an LCD monitor with DVI port for Playstation 3?

Q. My LCD monitor doesn't have HDMI. Is it possible to connect a Playstation 3 to it using converters or something?
Can you explain "right audio jack"? Getting audio seems to be the problem now. Anyone knows how to get audio for sure?

A. In addition to getting an HDMI to DVI adapter, you would connect a second cable to another port on the PS3 to get audio output.

You could use the composite AV cable that came with the PS3, it has three RCA plugs (red, white, and yellow). The red and white plugs are stereo audio. You need to connect those two plugs to something that can amplify the signals and then play them through attached speakers or headphones.

External computer speakers should accept that audio signal, but you may need an adapter that combines the two RCA plugs into a single plug that fits your speaker connection, like this: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=rca+to+3.5mm&hl=en&cid=17333923446508843273&ei=pWrlS6XvE4v6MeSayEU&sa=title&ved=0CAcQ8wIwADgA#p .

You could connect an optical cable to the PS3 instead of an RCA one for surround audio, but then you would have to connect it to a device that can accept optical audio (either a home theater receiver, a PC sound card that accepts optical audio, or a surround headphone system like this: http://www.trittontechnologies.com/index.php/products/gaming_audio_technology/ax-pro ).

How can I watch digital TV on an LCD monitor? (without hooking up a computer to it)?
Q. I have an LCD monitor with HDMI and DVI inputs and I would like to use it as a TV. I would like to connect to antenna and watch the digital broadcast TV after the "transition". I understand I need an external tuner, but what will work after the transition and which is best?

A. A DTV converter is a digital tuner, so the only obstacle you have is finding one with a DVI or HDMI output or buying a VCR with These connections and using the coax connection from the DTV box.

What happens if I use a disinfecting wipe on my LCD monitor?
Q. I used a Lysol disinfecting wipe on both my LCD monitors while they were turned on (yeah...I know it was stupid) and now neither monitor will work.

To add to that, my G5 Power Mac, which was connected to the monitors at the time, seems to have frozen and won't respond to anything. I've tried unplugging it for 20 minutes and although when I plug it back up, the power indicator on the front is on, there is no other response.

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A. Lysol is mostly water with a little alcohol and ammonia

You may have zapped your Monitors, Graphics Card,Motherboard and/or Power Supply

You will need to test each thing in a good system
Or take it all to a shop and ask what's fried

How does it looks feel when i play xbox 360 on hdtv?

Q. I am planning to get an 22 inch HDTV. Is it worth it? Because i have a lcd monitor that's connected with a xbox 360 with a vga cable. It's high quality but not Hd.

A. Its looks a bit more colorful but I think 22 inchs is a bit to small so I suggest...

-Save your money a bit longer so that you can get a bigger one
-Dont buy it and stick with your LCD Monitor because if you can see your game then its good enough
-Dont buy it and buy some games instead with your hard earned cash
-Dont buy it and save your money for something better

I was thinking about this for a long time myself but I waited a bit longer until I was sure and I was happy with my decision....To keep my money.

Does a higher contrast ratio of lcd monitor presents more accurate color for printing?

Q. Does CRT has higher contrast ratio compare to LCD?
Need more accurate display to assist me in computer graphics illustration.

A. If you want color accuracy without spending $1,000 on a monitor, get a CRT monitor and use a $100 color calibration device like a Huey (etc) to set the colors right.

There are so many combinations of monitors, printers and image software available that it is not possible to make a general statement about color accuracy, except that cheaper CRT's are more accurate than similiarly priced LCD's.

Does the size of your computer monitor affect your gaming performance?

Q. I have a 27 inch acer LCD computer monitor that I game on and I get choppy graphic performance while using it.
If I were to switch to a smaller monitor at a lower resolution that wasn't as high as 1920x1080, would I notice a difference in graphic performance?

A. Yes and no to your questions, its all about settings and resolution, not so much screen size. If you run lower graphics settings and a lower resolution, then yes, you will get better performance. But instead of doing that, why not just upgrade your video card? Then you can continue to play on the 27in. monitor and you may be able to bump up the settings and still get a decent frame rate.

Is there a gaming console Audio/Video jacks adapter for computer monitors?
Q. I ask because I bought a new computer and a 20inch widescreen LCD monitor. I wonder if I could buy and adapter and use my old 27 inch to just watch television while my new monitor can play 360 games. I bought the computer and monitor to mainly play PC games, but it would be nice to play my console games on a better screen.

A. what connections do you have on your monitors? out of VGA DVI HDMI

VGA is 15 pin trapazoid. looks like this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector

DVI looks like these
http://www.ezshopfun.com/index.php?cPath=214

hdmi looks like this
http://www.playstation3hdmicable.com/

simple adapters for $10 or so exist for vga to dvi adaptation, and that is Video only, no audio.
for audio you'll need 3.5mm to whatever you want to plug into. 3.5mm for speakers, maybe rca for a home stereo.

hdmi -> dvi is possible with only video
dvi -> hdmi is possible with only video
straight hdmi will get you video and audio

I don't quite understand the question, but for TV viewing on a monitor i recommend a pci tv tuner card. otherwise an adapter for rca to vga exist...there expensive and not very good

where is the best place to buy a digital camera and what is the digital camera?

Q. i am trying to but a digital camera. i dont what kind i should get. i like the ones that have auto face dection, red eye crop and blurr fix. I want to spend under $450. Where and which i should i get?

A. Please look at the new Canon Powershot SD850-IS. This is a very versatile camera that meets your specifications. It has a nice workable zoom range that will take you from broad scenics to decent telephoto views. Look at some sample images from the reviews on the SD700-IS to get the idea what this lens will cover. It has image stabilization, which really works. It is small enough to fit into a shirt pocket. It has a rechargeable battery that is good for 200-250 shots, depending on how much zooming and viewing you do or on how many shots use the flash. A spare battery is 1¾"x1¼"x¼" and the charger is barely twice that size, so carrying the spare is easy and packing the charger is easy. It has an optical viewfinder which can be useful when the sun is too bright to see the image on your LCD monitor. I could go on, but you can read some reviews and see what the pro's say.

Click on "Read Owner Opinions," which are mini-reviews by buyers. You can also read the full review on the SD700-IS by clicking on that option.

The upgrades for the SD850-IS are:
Canon Digic III image processor instead of Digic II
8 MP instead of 6 MP
Maximum ISO 1600 instead of ISO 800
Accepts up to 4 GB memory card instead of 2 GB
LCD monitor has better image
Face detection

I listed these in the order of importance, in my opinion. The first two are the ones that really count the most and the rest are just gravy.

B&H Photo has this camera for $310 and they will have suitable memory cards (1 GB or more) for $20-30.

Many of us trust and recommend B&H Photo. I have been using them for many years without a single problem. B&H Photo is available through a link at Yahoo! Shopping, www.bhphoto.com or at 1-800-622-4987. See also http://www.resellerratings.com/store/B_H_Photo_Video_Pro_Audio

What is the difference between a Nook, a Kindle, and Sony's e-Reader?
Q. And what about the future of the Nook with Borders going under?
Oops, but the question still stands, of all the major e-readers out there what are the differences?

A. Here are the salient differences between the Nook (multiple models), Kindle 3, and Sony Readers (in general).

Kindle 3 ($119 to $379):
Pros:
+ E Ink display is great for long-run reading -- like reading from a book.
+ E Ink Pearl display provides 50% better contrast than E Ink Vizplex found in regular Nook.
+ 4G internal memory
Cons:
- web browsing, apps, and games are much worse than with a Nook Color.
- no SD expansion

Nook Touch ($139): Same pros and cons as Kindle, plus:
Pros:
+ touch screen
+ EPUB/library support now; Kindles updated later this year
+ SD expansion
Cons:
- no 3G
- 2G internal memory

Kobo Touch ($129): Same pros and cons as Nook Touch, plus:
Pros:
+ international bookstore
Cons:
- only 1G internal memory
- Partnership with out-of-business Borders

Sony Readers ($158 - $378): Same pros and cons as Nook Touch, plus:
Pros:
+ better PDF support
Cons:
- expensive
- no wireless except on most expensive model (PRS-950)
- largest screen 7" (compared to 9.7" on Kindle DX)

Nook Color ($250):
Pros:
+ better web browsing, apps, and games
Cons:
- long-run reading experience is poor compared to E Ink readers -- like reading from a computer monitor

Nook First Edition:
Pros: None, unless you catch a great close-out sale or like the gimmicky mini color LCD panel used to show book covers
Cons:
- E Ink Vizplex display is older technology than E Ink Pearl found on Kindle 3s
- Web browsing, apps, and games are worse than Nook Color and Kindle 3

I want to start getting into photography?

Q. What camera is solid camera to start with for a beginner that isnt that expensive but no crappy?

A. There are TWO primary factors to consider:

1. How much money do you have to spend????
2. What level of photography do you aspire to "progress to" in the coming years ? (i.e. basic beginner, intermediate, or professional/business use).

For most beginners to intermediates I usually suggest one of these two manufacturers:

1. Canon EOS Rebel model XSi. (Also known as the Canon 450D in Britain)
The "kit" package comes with an 18-55mm zoom lens. The camera has pop-up flash, 12.2 Megapixels, and shutter speeds up to 1/4000th, 100-1,600 ISO sensitivity, 7 autoexposure Scene modes, PLUS Shutter Priority, Aperature Priority and Programmed Exposure Modes and Manual. It also has a 3 inch LCD screen, 3.5 frames continous per second max., 9 point AF system, Live View Functioning and the ability to record photos in 3, 6 or 12 Megapixels PLUS numerous other great features found only on more expensive cameras. Wal-Mart is also selling them now for about $799. Sam's Club also has them for $729.

I bought one of these 6 months ago and use it as my "back up" camera to a more expensive Canon EOS 5D Mark II. I absolutely love it. I have gotten some fantastic photos with it and cannot praise it enough. I routinely enlarge my photos to make 8x10's and 11x14 size enlargements with no noticeable distortion or loss of detail in the pictures.

2. Nikon D-90: If you prefer to use Nikon equipment I strongly recommend the Nikon D-90 which has 12.3 Megapixels, 3 inch monitor with Live View, 200-3,200 ISO sensitivity, 11 point AF system with Face Priority, 4.5 frames per second in continous mode, 5 advanced Scene modes for auto exposure plus Shutter Priority, Aperature Priority, Programmed Auto plus Manual. The D-90 sells for around $900-950. (Body ONLY. The 18-55mm lens cost an additional $150.-175.) Typically, Nikon equipment is slightly more expensive than Canon equipment, but (having owned both Nikon and Canon cameras), I have seldom noticed BETTER quality results using Nikon equipment.

These two selections are probably the best choices for any beginner to intermediate skill level, offering the most lenses and other accessories, dealers and places to purchase.

I strongly recommend that ALL beginners buy a good book on digital photography AND take a class or two from a Vocational school or Community Education Center in your area.

You can learn more about the technical specifications of each of these two cameras at these websites:

what is the major difference besides price between a digital camera and a digital slr camera?
Q.

A. http://www.digital-slr-guide.com/difference-between-slr-and-digital.html ...

No Movie Mode
Right up until September of 2008, this was a huge difference between digital SLRs and compact digital cameras.

SLRs are mostly focused on capturing still images, not video.

But in September of 2008, Nikon released a camera called the D90 - the first digital SLR that can capture both still photos AND High Definition (HD) video.

Hot on the heels of the D90 came the announcement of the new Canon 5D Mark II - the second digital SLR that captures photos and video (also HD).

While the addition of a movie mode appears to be an emerging trend in the digital SLR market, the vast majority of old and even new SLR cameras can not capture video.

Limited Live View
If you've seen any compact digital cameras, then you know that you can compose a photo just by looking at the LCD monitor on the camera's back.

You'll notice that virtually everyone who uses a compact camera takes photos this way - they never look through the viewfinder.

A surprising difference between SLR and compact digital cameras is that some SLRs don't have a live preview mode (especially models released prior to 2007).

The LCD is only good for reviewing shots that you've already taken - it won't show you the photo you're about to take.

This means that you must compose all your photos by looking through the viewfinder.

Many newer digital SLR cameras allow you to compose photos using both the LCD and the viewfinder (these are called live view digital SLRs), but they all have one huge limitation: the sophisticated autofocus systems that SLRs are renowned for don't work very well in "live view" mode.

For now, live view on SLRs is fine if you to take photos of static subjects, but it's impossible to use for any type of action photography.

Manual Zoom
Compact digital cameras have electronic zooms. Just push a button (or lever) and the camera's lens zooms in and out.

With a digital SLR, you're going to need two hands - zooming is a manual process. In order to zoom, you have to twist a ring on the lens.

Zoom Range
Since we're on the topic of zooms, let's talk about another difference between SLR and compact digital cameras.

Recently several compact cameras have been introduced with "mega-zooms".

In the compact world, zoom range is described by a multiplier (i.e. 4x, 6x or 10x) while with digital SLR lenses it's described in millimeters (i.e. 50mm, 100mm or 300mm).

Compact cameras with a 10x or 12x zoom cover an extremely wide range from wide angle to telephoto.

A similar lens for a digital SLR camera costs $400 or more and it usually doesn't have the same optical quality as zooms that don't cover such a wide zoom range.

If you want a 12x zoom with a digital SLR, it's a better bet to get two lenses instead of just one.

Size and Weight
If your idea of the ultimate camera is something that fits in your pocket, then forget all about digital SLRs.

The most obvious difference between SLR and compact digital cameras (besides price) is sheer size. Even a small-sized digital SLR camera is twice the size and bulk of a compact camera.

While there are many new digital SLR models that are more portable (and are easier to travel with) the addition of a lens to your camera ensures that you'll never be able to stow it away in your pants.

So What Should You Buy?
Even though I've talked about the difference between SLR and digital compact cameras you still might be on the fence.

Here are a few questions that might help you make up your mind:

Do you want to take more professional-looking photos?
Do you want to be able to change the lens attached to your camera?
Do you want more control over the photos that you take?
Are you sick and tired of the slow speed of your compact camera?
Do you want to take lots of photos in dim light?
If you answered YES to every question, get a digital SLR. You'll be happier in the long run.

If you answered NO or MAYBE to one or more, then take a good look at the digital compact cameras.

What are the names of those cords that I can connect to an lcd monitor with speakers?

Q. I have an lcd monitor with speakers installed in them and currently have a cord that connects to my computer that displays everything, but with no sound. Whats the name of the cord that works for audio and visual? Sorry I'm completely ignorant on this topic

A. Err... well, you've asked the question incorrectly, so first I'll answer the question you asked, then I'll give you the answer you're actually looking for.

Coaxial and HDMI cables are typically what's used in consumer products. Both carry audio and video (HDMI > Coaxial).

However, neither of those are what you want.

What you have connecting your computer to your monitor is probably either a VGA or DVI cable (both used for video only, and both are superior to Coaxial and HDMI). What you should look for, however, near the base of your monitor is a small, round, 3.5mm standard audio jack. You can then buy these at Walmart even.

You can call these a "3.5mm audio cable", and here is a picture of one (first result on google images):

What do I need to do to us my computer monitor to play my ps3?

Q. I have a HP 2010 Series Wide LCD Monitor. Can anyone tell me what kind of adapters I would need, if any?

A. If it has an HDMI input, you'll just need an HDMI cord. If it doesn't, you'll need an HDMI-to-DVI adapter. I used to have my PS3 set up that way, you'll need to use your AV cords for sound (I had mine plugged into the back of a stereo).

If you have to buy an HDMI cord or the adapter, shop online. You can get both on Amazon for under $15, but Radioshack was going to charge me over $120.

ATI Radeon HD 4200 video card

My computer can play HD videos (720p and 1080p) but the colors are always REALLY dark or the playback is choppy. My drivers are up to date, but I can't help but think the problem is the monitor (which I assume is pretty middle-of-the-road quality). I want to be able to watch clear 720p and 1080p videos.

I'm looking at the Asus VS247H-P 24-Inch Full-HD LED-Lit Monitor, but don't want to spend the money if it's my whole CPU that's the issue.

Thanks!

A. I really wish people would stop using the term "CPU" to refer to their entire machine. But that's besides the point...

I doubt that the monitor is your problem (your monitor doesn't really have much of a say over how choppy your video is). If I had to venture a guess I'd say the problem if your graphics card: the Radeon 4200 is kind of lower end.

My recommendation would be to buy a new graphics card. If all your doing is watching videos then you don't need to spend money on a gaming card or anything - just a basic $30-$50 card should cut it for you.

How much should it cost to build a basic computer?

Q. Now I don't do any gaming, video editing, or anything that would require a lot of power. Mainly I would be just converting video files to DVD and burning them, surfing the web, and downloading music. Of course I can just buy a pre-built computer that can do all of this without a problem, but I want to have some kind of computer building experience just for fun. How much do you think I should spend on building a simple rig?

A. I chose some good PC Hardware from Newegg.com for you

ASUS M2N68-AM AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 7050PV Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
$55.99

Hanns·G HB-175APB Black 17" 8ms Widescreen LCD Monitor
$129.99 -$40.00 Instant save = $89.99

XION II XON-103 Black SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 450W Power Supply
$69.99

ASUS (Dual Panels) IDE DVD-ROM Drive Model DVD-E818A3 - $19.99

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Windsor 2.0GHz Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Processor
$35.99

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop
$34.99
-----------------------------------------
Total = $306.94 w. flatscreen

Total = $216.95 w/o flatscreen

These are much better quality hardwares than you can get from any low price prebuilt system like Emachines and whatnot.

You can basically just upgrade the processor to something more powerful should your needs grow. Anything else is solid

How does my computer affect my power bill?
Q. I have a computer running off a 400w PSU and it's always on. When I use my computer i usually push it pretty hard (gaming, video editing, photoshop), and i was wondering what sort of impact this has on my power bill.

A. i run a 1100 watt power supply and my pc is always on. plus a 28 inch lcd monitor . i dont even use the power saving options. as a matter of fact I turn all the power saving stuff off for performance and my bill isnt that high. its within normal .. but i must say i am very good about turning other lights off and things of that nature. I highly doubt 400 watts is going to make that big a diffrence though i would have to say somewhere in the nature of maybe 20 to 50 a month higher.. I very seriously doubt the higher end of that especially if you have a power saver on your pc which many do. it doesnt ALWAYS use 400 watts. and you have to have alot of things on it to max out that 400 watts..

i think youll be fine. like i said. ive been running 1100 watt power supplies and they are maxed and its not that much more. gaming is your most power hungry activity and how often will you game pushing it really hard.. just to let you know i run a 32 man server which is always full 24/7 and im always on the pc myself. and my bill is NEVER over 140.00 and i live in HIGH BILL MARYLAND. which just became the highest electric bill state in the country..BGE our electric bills went up 75 percent since last year because the state woudlnt let them raise the rate for ten years so its really went sky high. some people need vouchers in this state now.

hope this helps..

Switching from Headset to TV speakers without unplugging it?

Q. I can't do that on my Samsung B2330HD 23" LCD HDTV Monitor Full HD 1080p HDMI, is there a device that can do that? Thank you!

A. It's not a question of a device, it's the design. The headphone jack on the TV has a switch that disconnects the internal speakers when headphones are plugged in.

What might work is if you had an external amplifier (like a home theater system) and used that to drive speakers and the headphones.

What is the difference in LCD monitors?
Q. I am planning to buy a new monitor for a new PC, and I wasn't sure what kind to get. I do web design on it and I watch a lot of movies. I also do photo editing and digital drawing. I want something with nice sharp picture, but I wasn't sure what all the numbers mean on the listings. I have been looking at Tigerdirect. Could someone explain the differences and what all the little numbers mean for each?

23" 1366x768 / 720p Native / 8ms / 700:1 Contrast Ratio / HDMI / ATSC Tuner / HD LCD TV

Samsung SyncMaster 216BW 21.6" Widescreen LCD Monitor - 5ms, 1000:1(DC 3000:1), WSXGA+ 1680x1050, Gloss Black, DVI-D, D-sub, 300 cd/m2

The 1000:1 thing and the 720p are what I dont understand at all. Please impart your knowledge upon me.
I know one listing is a monitor and one is a tv, but assuming they will both work with my computer, what do you think.

A. The number 720 stands for 720 lines of vertical display resolution, while the letter p stands for progressive scan or non-interlaced.

1000:1 is a contrast ratio this explains it:
The contrast ratio is a measure of a display system, defined as the ratio of the luminosity of the brightest color to the luminosity of the darkest color that the system is capable of producing
