What would i need a mac mini to have on the back if i want to use my 42" lcd TV as it's monitor?

Q. I'm wanting to purchase a mac mini. What does it need/require to utilize a 42" Hitachi LCD TV as it's monitor?

A. 42-inch LCD HDTVs usually have HDMI ports.

Your Mac Mini will have a miniDVI port on the back. Apple used to include a miniDVI-to-DVI adapter with Mac Minis, but no longer, so now you will have to buy the adapter separately.

You will need a miniDVI-to-DVI adapter and a DVI-to-HDMI cable. I have also heard of third-party miniDVI-to-HDMI cables, and those will work too if you can find one.

I'm using a miniDVI-to-DVI adapter and a DVI-to-HDMI cable to connect my Mac Mini to my 52-inch LCD HDTV, and it works perfectly: http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f347/armchairaviator/computer/IMG_0880c.jpg

Hope this helps.

will a mac mini work with a viewSonic VA800 LCD monitor?
Q. I am considering buying a Mac Mini.
I need a Mac to do code testing, but will continue to use my PC for most of my computing.
The Mac Mini is small and cheap.
However, I do not want to buy a new monitor.

I currently have my PC hooked up to a ViewSonic VA800 LCD which has inputs for multiple computers.

Is there any reason I would not be able to hook up a mac mini to this monitor.

A. Any screen will work.

=D

I Love my MAC!

Computer monitor mounting?

Q. I have ordered a dual monitor mounting stand for my husband. It can hold two 27" monitors but they need the VESA fittings (four holes in the back).

What I'm trying to figure out is if the following monitor will work. I can only see two holes. I'm still searching for larger monitors but wanted to know if I see a picture of a back of a monitor that isn't incredibly detailed but that I could see two holes, that it is capable of mounting or not.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?gclid=CJzcref5jbsCFcVQ7AodwDkAAA&Item=N82E16824254094&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-_-pla-_-LCD+%2f+LED+Monitors-_-N82E16824254094&ef_id=UpVYWgAABaqu1wwB:20131201021345:s

A. The pictures of the back of the monitor show the stand bolted in 4 holes. Bottom two are part of the larger 4 bolt pattern called VESA mounting holes for your double stand.

how to convert lcd monitor into touch screen?
Q.

A. Easy.
Buy a touch panel that you either clip on top of your current monitor, or one that you mount inside your current monitor casing. You can get such panels for cheap at eBay. They work by adding a touch-capable transparent panel on top of your LCD screen, and then you simply connect the included USB dongle to a free USB port, install drivers and away you go.

Just search for "touch panel kit" on eBay for instance and you'll get a whole bunch of different types and sizes. I converted my old 19" LCD to touch a couple of years ago by using an internally mounted capacitive panel. Worked great.

Good luck.

Edit:
Okay, who downthumbed this? It's all true. Don't believe me? Do the search and you'll see. 3M makes a lot of panels of this kind, and there are numerous other makers as well.

The other guys who have posted in here as of now, are all wrong.

what is the "live view" feature in modern dslr cameras?

Q. apparently the new flagship sony alpha900 does not have it, thanks

A. Live view is the ability to use the LCD monitor to compose your shot. Many first time DSLR users ask for this feature. Many experienced DSLR users poo-poo this feature, but they are wrong.

Live View is not so different from a view camera from 100 years ago. There are times when Live View can be quite helpful. I use it most for shooting over the heads of people in a crowd: http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/2819873511/ This is not a great shot, but I don't have anything better available on-line right now. Some subjects also benefit from a higher-than-normal view and Live View is of value there.

Okay, this is not exactly wedding photography, but look at this sample, taken from the audience of a children's pageant: http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/3097070087/ Lovely view of the back of some guys' heads. Using Live View from the same vantage point< I was able to capture the entire stage area: http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/3097070135/ which resulted in this cute shot of a shild who needed some extra prompting from the teacher: http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/3097070247/ Chances are, I would not have gotten this shot without Live View.

You can also use Live View when you want a low point of view without getting down on the floor to get it. I used live view here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/3091871958/ It was helpful, because I could talk to the cat and divert her attention so she was looking up at me and away from the camera. This is not a "serious" use, perhaps, but there are similar applications that you could easily think of.

I took this with a D200 that does not have Live View. http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/2311445874/ I did it by holding the camera down almost on the ground and repeatedly taking the shot until I got what I wanted. Even if I chose to lay down on the ground, I don't think I could have gotten my eye low enough to properly view the image in the viewfinder. With Live View, I could have at least come close the first time.

It can be helpful for macro shots. I took this with Live View on the D300: http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/2526886848/ In spite of the comment about poor image quality in the LCD, the D300 has almost a full megapixel resolution in the LCD. You can zoom in for critical focus using Live View. I don't care who you are, nobody is going to get better focus than that using your eye in an unmagnified optical viewfinder.

As far as the pop-up flash, mentioned in another answer, I think pro-level cameras should have a pop-up or SOME light that is capable of triggering off-camera strobes. Why not? I find that the pop-up is quite useful as fill flash if I dial it back a few stops, so I don't know why a pro should be saddled with a huge flash for every single job when just a little fill flash would suffice. It's not a bad idea, in my opinion.

Shot with the pop-up for fill flash:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/3061999053
http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/2705802642
The sun was a a low angle for both of these shots and the fill flash was very helpful in reducing shadows on the subjects' faces.

looking for LCD monitor?
Q. I went to the store (office depot) and they're having a sale, a $150 19" samsung (5ms) and a viewsonic 20" HD. I don't have anything HD maybe a dvd player with component or a wii. I only have a nvidia 6800XT which includes DVI and VGA. The pictures for both look really bad. Must be the graphics card because it looked really out of focus, no sharpness or the VGA. I don't know which to get.... I haven't seen what DVI looks like. I currently have a VGA CRT monitor 15" flat screen.
widescreen plz

A. Don't buy the Dell hype. Viewsonic is a decent monitor. Have 5 or 6 at work and just bought a 20" widescreen myself for home use, mostly gaming. P.S. make sure you use the DVI connection not the VGA. Not sure about your 6800XT but my 6800GTOC does have both types on it.

What are the best/worst led lcd monitors?

Q.

A. Look for an IPS-LCD panel. That will usually guarantee decent color accuracy and very wide viewing angles. However, not many use LED backlighting, though that's not a big loss for what you gain.

Plasma or LCD?
Q. Need to buy a nice TV for the big game ....which one is better Plasma or LCD? Need advice ....running out of time!

A. The new LCD HD-TV's have way better response time and black levels.
Plasma seems to be old technology now days. They will burn a image, No good for gaming, And last 5 years.
Samsungs are junk, Sony is over priced and over hyped.
If you want a great picture and sound without spending a arm and leg look at the Toshiba Regza line of HD-LCD-TV's.

can i use my 19" lcd monitor as a screen for my xbox?

Q. I have a 19" lcd monitor for my computer with a vga input only. I have a cable that is composite HD conections to VGA (red, blue, green, yellow, white to VGA). When i connect them i can get a picture but it looks like a night vision lense (way to much green). Why is this? And is there any way i can get this to work?

A. Wrong cable.

While YPbPr is similar to VGA, it is NOT the same signal. Which is why you got that wierd image.

You should be using the purpose-built Microsoft XBox HDAV VGA cable (sold-separately) to connect your XBox 360 to your monitor. http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360vgahdcable/

Connecting an Xbox 360 to an analog LCD computer monitor?
Q. What would I need in order to be able to accomplish this? The Xbox has a DVI port so I don't know if that would help answer this question. The monitor has a standard 15 pin VGA connector. Currently my gf is using it with the red, white, and yellow connectors on her TV, but it hurts her eyes and so I'm trying to find a way to connect it to her PC monitor in order so her eyes don't hurt after an hour of play..

Also, would the solution also cover the sound output?
hey sensei, that's good but it's not really what i'm looking for.. i did manage to find something but i'm still in doubt because i still have to find some adapters in order to be able to do what i've been trying to accomplish..

A. Now that the Xbox 360 has launched console videogames into the High-Definition era, experiencing your games to their full potential has become an expensive proposition. 360 games look great in Hi-Def, but many are almost unplayable on Standard-Definition TVs. Condemned is a good example of a game that becomes much too dark on SDTV, and Tomb Raider Legends can also be rather hard to play on an old TV due to the necessity of spotting hidden vines and small details.

The case for the necessity of HDTV for proper Xbox 360 enjoyment is pretty solid, but the price starts climbing quickly. In addition to the $400+ for a 360 and games, players are also presented with the necessity of a proper HDTV, which adds thousands to the overall cost. What's a devoted gamer on a tight budget to do? PC monitors may be the answer.

It's easy to set up a desktop gaming setup.

The Pros
Long before "HD" was the most popular consumer electronics buzzword around, PCs were pumping out graphics in resolutions well in excess of the 1280x720 that is 720p. PC monitors have to support a variety of resolutions in order to accommodate the myriad of computers they might have to work with, and as such they are generally very good with scaling non-native resolutions. In addition, LCD monitors have also become highly developed and affordable. Advances in manufacturing have dramatically lowered response times to the gaming-friendly 8ms-or-less range. Prices have fallen such that a 20'' widescreen LCDs that cost thousands a few years ago are now available for less than $400. Because manufacturer's cannot rely upon in-store placement, salespeople, and big marketing for PC monitors as they can with traditional HDTVs, the overall market is very competitive and without major markup, allowing for serious savings for you.

The Cons
Sadly, there are a few headaches with using a PC monitor as your primary 360 display. Size is the first great concern. The affordable sweet spot for LCD monitors lies in the 20-25'' range, which is not really large enough to make out while sitting on a couch in a traditional entertainment situation. Another problem is the fact that most PC monitors have only VGA or DVI inputs, no TV tuner, and no integrated speakers. The general lack of support for Component inputs isn't much of a problem, as VGA wires for the 360 are widely available, but you will likely have a bit of a headache if you want to connect more than the 360 and your PC to the monitor, and a VGA switch-box or TV card for your computer will add to the overall cost. Nevertheless, the savings and efficiency of using a quality monitor for both PC and 360 gaming is pretty strong.

Setup
VGA wires from Microsoft and MadCatz for the Xbox 360 are readily available at retail and online for around $30. When connected via VGA, the Xbox 360 has wider array of resolution options than when it is connected with Component wires. The resolutions are selectable though the Xbox 360's dashboard, and include:

640x480

848x480

1024x768

1280x720

1280x768

1280x1024

1360x768

When choosing an LCD monitor for Xbox 360 gaming, it's important to check that the LCD has one of these resolutions as either a native or supported resolution. Most modern LCDs in the 20'' range will have native resolutions higher than 1360x768, but that doesn't necessarily solve the problem. Trying to send a non-supported resolution into most LCDs will lead to a muggy, badly scaled, and possibly out-of-frame-image. In our test case, our BenQ FP202W 20'' widescreen 8ms LCD has a native resolution of 1680x1050, but looks best when the 360 is set to 1280x1024 widescreen. Other resolutions could not be scaled properly and looked pretty bad.

Sound is another concern. Because few PC monitors have integrated speakers these days, you'll need some kind of external speaker solution. The VGA wires for the 360 have optical (Toslink) outputs, so if you've got a nice soundcard for your computer with optical-in, you can take that digital signal straight into whatever speakers you're using with the PC. If you don't have optical support, you'll have to use the stereo-RCA wires that are integrated into the VGA cable. That's a hassle, because most 2.0 or 2.1 PC speaker kits only have mini-jack auxiliary inputs. You'll need to grab a little RCA-to-mini-jack dongle to allow for the connection.

Extra VGA resolutions. Make sure your LCD is compatible with at least one.

Performance
Once we found the best settings for the 360 on our BenQ FP202W, we were quite impressed with the results. Compared to a $1,000 Dell W2600 26'' HDTV, our $400 BenQ 20'' LCD produced a much cleaner looking picture free of nasty scaling and response-time blur. A nice feature of the FP202W is the fact that it is able to switch between its DVI and VGA inputs, which allowed us to connect our PC through DVI and the 360 through VGA and switch between them on the fly (perfect for slacking off at work).

Conclusion
There are some serious benefits to choosing an LCD monitor as your Xbox 360 display of choice. LCD PC monitors around 20'' are both more affordable and generally higher quality than similarly sized HDTV LCDs, and you can get some sweet double-duty out of them with your PC.

This is a stereo RCA-to-mini-jack plug.

On the other hand, if you really require standard TV functionality, like component, composite, and S-video inputs, or integrated speakers, the costs to add such functionality to a monitor will add up quickly. Also, two player action is a little limited on a 20'' monitor, and trying to crowd around your PC desk can be less than comfortable. While solitary Xbox Live addicts will have no problem, the more social among us may not be so happy.

In the end, it's really a matter of your particular situation. If you've got $1500+ to spend, a nice big HDTV is the way to go. If you're aiming to keep your costs below $1000, however, a PC monitor LCD is far superior to most of the shady sub-$600 HDTVs being sold at Wal-Mart.

How to clean an LCD tv/ monitor?

Whats the best way to clean a LCD computer monitor?
Q. I have a Toshiba Qosmio laptop, with a 17' LCD Flat screen and Im not sure how to go about cleaning it. Should I just use windex and a paper towel like I would on my TV, or is there a special way to clean LCD monitors?????

A. Cleaning Your LCD Screen

The major computer outlet stores are now starting to carry LCD cleaners for Flat Panel Monitors and Notebooks that do not contain the chemicals found in some commercial glass cleaners. These cleaners will definitely do the job nicely, but you do have to purchase them. If you do not wish to purchase these factory made cleaners, then you can clean your LCD Screen in the following manner.

What You Can Use

Water.

Water with a tiny amount of soft liquid soap.

Isopropyl Alcohol.

Hexane.

Petroleum Benzine.

Commercial glass cleaners that do not contain ammonia.

What You Should Avoid

Acetone.

Ammonia.

Ethyl acid.

Ethyl Alcohol.

Methyl chloride.

Toluene.

Commercial glass cleaners containing ammonia.

How You Should Do It

You should clean your LCD Screen display by applying the cleaner to a soft, clean cloth. Then you should wipe the cloth across the display from left to right, moving from the top of the display down to the bottom of the display. If your display contains grease or some other contaminant, then you should dampen your cloth with water instead of a commercial cleaner as the cleaner may smear the contaminants across the screen.

How is the quality in using an LCD tv as a computer monitor?

Q. Is there any sacrafice in quality in using a computer to connect to an LCD tv using a HD-15 input oppose to connecting to an LCD computer monitor. I am looking for a LCD tv (42 inches) with a resolution of 1920 x 1200. Am I right to asume that a LCD tv with 1080P capability will give me a 1920 x 1200 resolution from my computer?
assuming that my vid card is a BFG GeForce 7950 GT OC

A. Hi,
There is no sacrifice in quality in using LCD TV as monitor.

It is advisable to use LCD TV as monitor as it can serve dual purpose and no lose of display quality. LCD TV is basically LCD monitor with TV function additional.

is a 1680x1050 resolution a good quality for a LCD monitor?
Q.

A. resoulution is not really quality anymore but really just a meaning of size.

By telling me that res. i know you have a 22" lcd monitor which is good.

The next best thing is to move up to a 24" which shows 1920x1200, higher than the latest state-of-the-art TV's!

best ram / graphics card for gaming pc?

Q. im going to build a gaming pc over the next few months and ive already selected what case, cooler, motherboard, processor, hard drive, and power supply i plan to use, but i also need ram and a graphics card. i want to know what company makes the best ram to use for gaming( i plan to have at least 32gb of ram as my mobo says it supports 64gb) also what graphics car would be best (would really like to use nvidia)
my setup so far is as follows;

case; thermaltake level 10 gt black
cooler; thermaltake 2.0 extreme cooler
power; sea sonic platinum 1000
mobo; asus rampage IV extreme
processor; i7 - 3930k

A. let me give you a recommended build, dont buy the thermaltake level 10 gt black case, its a little pricey, the corsair carbide 300r is a better choice and still will be able to fit very large graphics cards, and have room for other stuff, personally i like the look of the corsair more too, the noctua nh-d14 is a very quiet and nice aftermarket cooler and actually runs quieter than the thermaltake 2.0 extreme cooler, it may not cool as good as that expensive thermaltake cooler, but its more compact, and costs a lot less, plus the noctua fan has a 6 year warranty where as that thermaltake one only has a 1 year warranty, asus p8z77m is a good motherboard paired with 16gb of the gskill sniper ddr1600 1.25v ram, i personally wouldnt go any higher than 16gb, trust me, if 8gb almost scores max on the windows experience index then 16gb is more than enough, also make sure to buy 2 sets of the gskill sniper 8gb ram in the link, so a total of 4 sticks of ram, for storage device, please use a solid state, mechanical hard drives in my opinion are not good and should only be used on low budget systems and your build certainly is not. solid states are better because they consume less power than mechanical hard drives, run silent, run way faster, last longer, and the thing with ssd is that you can fill them up almost until they are full and will still run just as fast and be reliable where as mechanical hard drives will become really slow or even fail if you put too much space in them, i recommend a 512gb ssd from adata, plenty of space to last you several years, for processor, i would just get the i7 3770k, i wouldnt overclock it though, better to keep everything stock so the parts last longer, a 1000w psu is not necessary in my opinion, the rosewill fortress 750w psu is probably the best psu for the money, 80plus platinum efficiency, 7 year warranty, 750 watts will power the most high end graphics cards now or in the future, for the best gaming experience, go with a 120hz led monitor with 1920x1080 resolution, for graphics card since the newer hd 8000 series amd cards will come out later this year, it would be better to just get a ok graphics card for now while still getting good framerates on max settings on games and sell it later rather than getting a really good card now and upgrading only to a slightly better one, the nvidia gtx 700 series cards come out i think in 2014 or later 2013, im not sure, i would just recommend the amd 7850, getting over 30 fps on absolute max settings on any games and around 50-60 fps with a little settings turned down lower, also go with a good thermal paste, the prolimatech pk3 1.5g is a great one for the price found on ebay for 4.95, search prolimatech, get a cheap but good wired keyboard and mouse, wifi card or usb wireless adapter if needed, windows 7 64 bit, speakers optional, also dont forget cd rom,-

Yes, I've heard of Steam. I'm looking for a list or any recommendations of games I can run at the moment, yes I know this graphics card is horrible and I'm going to try to add on a different card, but in the meantime I'd like to know what I can run at the moment.

A. Nothing close to high end. You have no video card, only Intel integrated graphics

If you want to play modern games, you need to buy and install a decent video card (and most likely the power supply too)

LCD TV/monitor combo?

Q. where would I find a decent 19", 21" or 23" flat panel LCD TV around $100. doesn't need to be HD ready nor a VGA input either. just the TV tuner is fine...
even 18.5" is also fine...is there anything available with coupons or anything like that?

A. Monitors under $100 exists, larger monitors WITH a TV tuner under $100 doesn't exist.

The cheapest LCD monitor by itself is around $75 for a 17".

The cheapest via amazon
http://www.amazon.com/gp/search?bbn=172282&keywords=LCD+TV&rh=n%3A172282%2Cn%3A!493964%2Ck%3ALCD+TV%2Cp_36%3A5000-10000&low-price=50&high-price=200&x=4&y=12

and something ridiculous about 2.2x your budget:

tv tuner for lcd monitor?
Q. where can i get a cheap tv tuner box example link :
http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2707960&CatId=1427

i have a lcd computer screen laying around and i wanna turn it into a tv sience i dont use desktop pc anymore, please links to stores electronic stores or online websites for cheap but working tv tuner boxes with remote any help at all would be apreciated or if there is any other way to connect with out tuner box any tricks or connections any info welcomed

one problem my screen doesnt have speakers so the idea of dvd/vcr combo doesnt help becouse there is no way to connect speakers to it........

A. The best way is to just go out and get a DVD/VCR combo box. It has a tuner in it. You will also need a cable that goes from the S-video or VGA outputs on the back of the VCR to the monitor cable.

This is what I did, and I like it. Instead of just a tuner, I also have DVD/VCR capability.

What would cause white horizontal bands on JVC GR-D33U digital camera LCD monitor?
Q. Our JVC GR-D33U Camcorder is almost two years old, and all of a sudden the LCD monitor has begun acting up (see link below for reference photos).

We get horizontal, white bands on a darkened (black) monitor. Occasionally we'll get a clear picture, but only for about 5 minutes before the white bands return. Other times the monitor will look like a distorted black and white picture wherein no object can clearly be seen, but the shape of what's on the screen will shift (reminds me of a less grainy ultrasound picture).

When the camcorder is initially powered on, sometimes the monitor will
read "LENS CAP", indicating that the lens cap needs to be removed, even
though it already has been. View monitor: http://www.users.qwest.net/~rnapoli/jvcGR-D33U.html

A. Factory trained camera tech here. I own one of these cameras and they are actually quite good for their price.

However, several recent models of JVC camcorders had an inherent defect from the factory, including the GR-D33US. The defect caused a high failure rate of the (Sony-made) CCD image sensors in these cams. The symptoms on your webpage are typical of the failure. JVC has posted a notice on their website stating that they will cover this defect under an special warranty if the camera is sent directly to them. See the listed link below.

Also, the triangles you mention are the low-contrast indicators which show up if the camera cannot auto-focus. See page 31 of your owner's manual (available on the JVC website). With the CCD defect, of course, it cannot focus properly.

Good luck!

A. Yes, that configuration would play WoW and Borderlands 2 on ultra without lag.

But it's not the most cost-effective build for the money. You're burning money on things which don't improve performance and skimping in other areas you shouldn't.

First of all, dual GTX 550 Ti's is quite powerful. However, it's always better to have a single higher-end card than a pair of lesser cards running in SLI or Crossfire. SLI performance doesn't scale equally for all games. SLI/CF setups also experience more graphics driver glitches/bugs and also may run afoul of micro-stuttering. Instead of two GTX 550 Ti cards, you're better off with a single GTX 660, which can play top-end titles like BF3 on ultra at 1080p.

By the way, for WoW and Borderlands 2 on that 1366x768 monitor, even a single GTX 550 Ti is enough to run smoothly on ultra.

Second, AMD processors have weaker gaming performance than Intel. Core i5 is the best choice for gaming builds. Even Core i3 beats most AMD processors.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/amd-fx-8120-6100-4100_6.html#sect0

Third, putting 16GB of RAM into a gaming rig is just wasting money. No games utilize more than 4GB of RAM. With 8GB you've got enough to keep your rig future-proof for the next 3-4 years. Gaming requires a high-end graphics

Fourth, you want a good quality power supply- something from a top brand like Corsair or Antec, not the generic one.

Finally, why do you have a secondary hard drive of 500GB? There's no reason for it... and unless you're storing a TON of videos and music, 2TB isn't needed for your main drive. A 1TB drive would be plenty. You might consider an SSD for super-fast boot times along with a 1TB secondary drive, but that's a degree of decadence you might not be interested in ;)

Instead of starting with the Mega Special I, start with the Mega Special III (base price $825)

I suggest taking the air cooling option - Cooler master Hyper 212 EVO rather than liquid cooling. That's fine even for moderate overclocking (which isn't necessary with a Core i5) and is basically zero maintenance.

Upgrade to the Corsair TX650 power supply and 2GB GTX 660 (which is currently a free upgrade from the GTX 560 Ti)

Keep the default Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H motherboard and 8GB of 1600Mhz RAM... those are fine.

You can still chose the Raidmax Augusta case if you really like it... Otherwise the default Cooler Master HAF 912 is just as good and costs less.

Add 64-bit Windows 7, your Azza gaming keyboard and mouse, your 600W PMPO speakers (although I recommend at least getting the Creative T3130) and you're set.

You can choose their ultra care options, although they're pretty much a rip-off. The professional wiring option is pointless when you're running a single graphics card- there's PLENTY of space inside the case, no airflow problems. The ultra enhanced packaging is just some extra foam that won't really matter if the delivery guy tosses the box over a fence. Assuming it doesn't suffer some awful mishap, their standard packaging provides ample protection.

Even with the Thermal Fusion 400 compound and Professional wiring options, your total is $1207 before taxes/shipping, without monitor.

I advise AGAINST getting your monitor from CyberpowerPC, I don't really like their prices, or the models offered. Get that from Newegg or Amazon. For example, this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824113030

Or if you want a full 1080p monitor, this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009316

So you spend less, for a better-performing system. Good luck!

Is it a good time to buy a Canon XH A1 ?
Q. Hello,

Do you think it is a good time to buy a Canon XH A1 or should I wait for a larger sensor camcorder offering
- Better low light peformance
- Shallower depth of field

------------------------------------------

I'm a professional photographer in search of a practical video system to achieve a photographic look as much as I can.

These come to mind:
- shallow depth of field
- low light performance
- practicality

I currently own a Canon HV20 and a redrock micro 35mm adapter with follow focus. I'm using my Nikon lenses with it.

However the rig is way too bulky to be practical and low light performance is poor. Also manual focus is a pain when you or your subject is moving.

--------------------------------------------------

Currently the market offers the Red system, which is aimed mainly at filmmakers,

the Canon 5d MKII, giving a good low light performance, a large selection of lenses, nice shallow depth of field in a quite portable package. The reviews I read mentioned that the autofocus is almost useless in video. And I'm also not sure this is the product to go for with video not being the main function. i.e will require a decent mic added, limited to 30p etc.

Like this person here, I wonder why they do not come up with a larger sensor camcorder:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=661527

Now, about the Canon XH A1.
Pros:
- It looks like a great video camera with decent low light performance (not as good as a higher end dslr)
- Good lens with autofocus
- Expandable with accessories
- Decent built-in mic and other sound recording options with added ports
- No need to invest in lenses

Cons:
- Only 1/3" sensor
- No shallow depth of field
- Questionable low light performance when compared to 5dMKII

----------------------------------------------

I'm wondering whether they will come up with a larger sensor video camera soon (next 2 years)
or
Should I just go with Canon XH A1 and forget about the shallow depth of field ?

Thanks

A. There are bigger sensor camcorders, the Sony DSR series, XDCAMs DigiBetas, Panasonic AJ DVC PROs etc. They are all 3ccd, so you have triple the cost of the bigger sensor, they also require bigger more expensive lenses.

In the same way that you can buy a canon powershot for £100 you can also buy a EOS 1Ds Mk3 for £4k.

The redrock system will work on the XHA1 with the right adaptor, to my mind it is a terrible cumbersome system, requiring mirrors taped to LCD, post prod flipping, no zooming etc.

I hate to pour scorn on your idea but if you haven't money for a professional camera then it isn't likely that you will have money for professional sound recording gear, a sound recordist, a professional lighting rig or gaffer etc.

The XHA1 is a decent camera for the money, and used within its limitations will give very good results: it has an ND filter do you can shoot with wide aperture without over-exposure to aid shallow depth of field, also if you move the camera back and zoom in you will accentuate perception of shallow depth of field.

Video and photography need light. The XHa1 has a gain adjustment (similar to ISO control on DSLR) to boost the picture in lo light, but it is noisier. If you want decent looking video then you need to take control of the light rather than hoping for good ambient light.

If you really must have cinematic depth of field then the 5Dmk2 is the only option below 10s of thousands of pounds.

It is compromised in that:

No live expsoure control
Only manual lens movements
MPEG4 based codec (not great with pans and tilts or subject motion)
Rudimentary audio recording with no audio monitoring

If you can't afford a 1/2 inch or 2/3rd inch camcorder then the XHA1 is as close as you are going to get.

What is the best LCD type monitor to play PS3 on (Type, size, manufacturer)?

Q.

A. Monitor as in computer monitor? Or TV? Its best to go with a tv and not monitor (unless by monitor you mean a 40inch TV without a tuner) purely because of size. When playing for hours on a tiny monitor, you eyes will murder you.

Type. PS3 takes full advantage of 1080p so if you have the money this would be the Best. 120Hz is nice but not necessary. And make sure you get LCD, not plasma.

Size. Completely Dependant on the size of your room and how close your going to be. 40 inch looks real nice on the ps3, as does 52 although 52 can be a bit big sometimes.

Manufacturer. Assuming your getting an LCD TV, Sony, Samsung and SHARP make the best LCD pannels. I personally have a Sony and its a thing of beauty. Hope this helps

LCD monitor screen size?
Q. when a LCD monitor says 17" for screen size, is that its viewable screen size? (since in CRT monitors, the viewable screen size differs from the monitors' size)

A. the viewable size of a 17" LCD screen is 17", but on a 17" CRT the viewable size is about 15.5" to prevent from misunderstandings.

difference between tft lcd and just a regular lcd?

Q. What is the difference between a "TFT - LCD" And just a regular lcd???

im talking about monitors

A. TFT (thin-film transistor) is the "parent" type of monitor... and there are several different types of TFT monitors. So, in a sense, a "regular LCD" is simply a type of TFT monitor.

"The thin film transistor in a TFT LCD monitor consists of a thin film of a semiconductor material applied over a glass substrate. Each pixel in a TFT LCD monitor has its own transistor along with the liquid crystal material. The liquid crystal material exhibits properties of both a liquid, because of its ability to change quickly, and a crystal, because of its ability to remain in an arranged position. The transistor applies a voltage to the pixel, determining the color and intensity of the pixel. A pixel is short for picture element, and the tiny pixels blend together to create the image on a display." (See the www.wisegeek.com article below for even more details.)

The most common type of TFT LCD (and probably the one you are referring to as a "regular" LCD) is the twisted nematic (TN) display. TN displays are the most commonly used displays... they have high refresh rates but suffer from limited viewing angles and poor color reproduction. On a TN display, if you look at the image from severe angles you will notice a shift in the reproduction of color. While this does not affect most business or gaming users, it does present a problem to graphic artists who need faithful color reproduction across the entire screen.

For those who need accurate color reproduction, an in-plane switching (IPS) LCD would be used. IPS LCDs faithfully reproduce color but tend to have much lower refresh rates. Slow refresh rates are bad for fast moving images, so the IPS LCDs tend not to be favored by home users who may be more into gaming or watching videos on their computers.

There are other types of LCD displays out there, but the TFT type is by far the most common. Almost every LCD monitor you would see at a store is the TFT type... so in every sense the TFT LCD is a good, old "regular LCD". The TFT is generally dropped and we refer to them simply as LCDs.

What is the best type(LCD, LED, Plasma) of tv for console gaming?
Q. I think I'm going to go with the brand Samsung so really I'm wanting to know if LCD, LED, or Plasma will give the best gaming experience. Longevity is also a small factor.

A. Go with a 42" plasma by panasonic, its the smallest they make, with a 15.8 GBps or greater transfer rate HDMI cable. Panasonic bought Pioneer's panel technology when they went out of business. Plasmas don't have that screen burn issue any more either. Plasmas have 0.00001ms or something like that pixel response, and true 600hz refresh rate. (600 pictures per second). The problem with 240hz and 120hz tv's is its all picture processing and creates a fair amount of input lag and unnatural movement. LCD TV's are terrible for gaming, no matter what the refresh rate or pixel response time. If you want a small screen, which would give you a very sharp, crisp picture, get a Samsung 2770FH monitor, its a 27", with a 10.2 GBps transfer rate HDMI cable. They are a 1ms pixel response time monitor, 60hz which is ps3's native output refresh rate, and the reason pixel response is important is because the lower the response time, the sharper the picture stays. I owned one and it was a wonderful screen, and I noticed a big difference between it and the samsung 23" 2ms monitor immediately playing F1 2010. Anywho, hope this helps, get internet that is at least 1 mega byte download speed, and always set whatever screen you get to game mode.

Is it possible to hook up the original Xbox to a Media Center PC or LCD monitor and play Xbox games?

Q. I know that hooking up my Xbox via a Media Center Extender will allow me to swap pictures, music , and record TV and such. But what if I want to play my Xbox games? Will it show thru my monitor? If not, is there a way to hook up my Xbox to my LCD monitor? Will playing the Xbox damage the monitor?

A. Yes, assuming that your media center pc has tv inputs. I use regular old XP with an Aver TV card and have no problem using my xbox on it.

PS3 connect to dvi in or to a vga output on a lcd monitor?
Q. Is there some sort of adapter that allows the PlayStation 3 to display on a lcd monitor which accepts either a VGA adapter or a DVI In cable?

Cause I presently have a Xbox 360 that is connected to it using the vga hd av adapter by Microsoft.

But I want my PS3 to connect to my lcd monitor if possible.

Thanks for the help.

A. Your best bet is a DVI-to-HDMI cable (DVI end into your monitor, HDMI end into your PS3). That's because HDMI uses the same digital video signal as DVI.

You will need to figure out some other way to get sound from your PS3 though, since a DVI-to-HDMI cable strips out the digital audio carried by HDMI.

Hope this helps.

Why does my monitor stays black for so long after windows permissions?

Q. Whenever windows requests permissions for a program my monitor goes black for what seems like an abnormally long amount of time. I have dual monitors set up now and I can verify that one monitor stays black about twice as long as the other. It's only maybe a second and a half but it throws me off.

The monitor that blacks out is a new Acer LCD LED Backlit monitor hooked up through HDMI and the other one is an old Samsung LCD hooked up through DVI. Even before I had dual monitors set up my ACER seemed really slow, so without comparing the two specifically together I'm just curious why this is happening.

A. Hello

From what I can tell you are probably talking about user account control or UAC feature which was introduced first in windows vista. It is a feature to warn the users about applications which are making unauthorized changes in the computer. It warns the users and shows a dialog box for the permission for the changes needs to be make by an application. For some reason it seems your video card is not supporting this feature its black out feature. You may simply disable it as necessary. Go to control panal then user accounts and family safety then again click on user accounts then click on change user account control settings, then move the slider all the day to down then click ok and accept any permissions if asked.

Hope this helps!!!

Can computer Led/Lcd monitor upscale lower resolution video to fit in higher resolution screen?
Q. Ok it's probably a noob question.

As far as I know HD led/lcd tvs can upscale lower resolution game video/frames(ps3 xbox 360) to fit the whole screen.

So I need to know can computer monitor with hd resolution support (1920x1080) upscale 1360x768p resolution game video/frames to fit the whole screen?Or I need to play at native 1920x1080p resolution so that the monitor can fill the whole screen? Is there any special type or model of any Lcd/Led monitor that can upscale Pc game's frames from lower resolution to fit the whole screen? Is this any special feature for computer Led/Lcd monitor? If so what is this feature is called/named?Do different manufacturers lcd monitor have different names of this feature?

the reason I am asking is because I play at 1360x768p resolution on 16 inches lcd monitor and now I am thinking about updating to a 1920x1080p monitor. But if I play at 1360x768p resolution will there be blank spaces around the edges of monitor screen or the monitor will upscale the game frames to fit the whole screen ?
ok those blank bars do make me feel the monitor is not used to it's full potential

kind of makes the monitor feel empty and game screen with black bars also feels

quite weird to me.

So what is the aspect ratio of 1360x768 resolution 16:9 or 16:10?Will it upscale and fit to 1920x1080 resolution monitor or leave blank bars outside the game frame?

A. 1360x768 is 1.7708333 ratio. 1920x1080 is 1.777777 ratio. Very close.
16:10 is 1.6 ratio. 16:9 is 1.77777 ratio. As you can see, the 16:9 ratio screen best fits both the resolutions you are trying for.
But there is a cost to upscaling. Since you cannot manufacture greater detail out of a lower resolution signal like 1360x768, what upscaling does is to add in duplicated pixels every so often. Since there are (1920-1360 = 560) more pixels to put into the picture, that means somehow those 560 pixels are added over the spread of 1920 pixels. About every 3.42 pixels another one is added. Actually it goes 3,3,4,3,4,3,3,4,3,4 etc. As you can see, a lot of duplicates are added. The resolution is not any better. It is just expanded to cover greater area of screen. It does get fuzzier if you compare side by side. But you are supposed to view from a greater distance so you will not notice.
And, I think the standard is 1366x768, not 1360x768. That gives a 1.7786 ratio.

Can I use a Step-Down Transformer to lower the output voltage of an AC adapter?

Q. Here is the deal...

I have an IBM LCD monitor that I got on the cheap from Ebay, the issue was that it didn't have a base or a power supply.

Big deal, I thought because the plan was to wall-mount it and I had 6-7 old ac adapters lying around that would have roughly the same voltage and amperage.

So, now that I got it in the mail, I find that it requires a 12v 3.0 amp adapter. Unfortunately, all the adapters I have that provide enough amperage are all 19V or higher.

Back to the question, couldn't I just add a transformer inline with the output cable to step down the voltage to a level that will not fry the monitor?

Where could I find a step-down transformer that small?
The adapters I am looking to use are all old notebook adapters. I imagine these are too well regulated to work considering what you are all telling me.

The main point of this was to figure out a way to do it and avoid having to buy the adapter outright. There is a good level of satisfaction knowing that you were able to avoid spending money by doing things yourself.
I found a 15v 4A adapter, but again it is a notebook adapter. Looks like I will have to suck it up and buy a new one, unless anyone has any other ideas...

A. It depends.
If the adapters you have generate a regulated DC output, then trying to reduce the voltage by running the AC side off a transformer isn't going to be successful.

However, if the adapter produces an unregulated DC output, or an AC output, then if you can find the correct transformer it should work. For example, using a 24V adapter with a transformer sold to run 120V appliances off a 240V mains would give you the 2:1 ratio that you need. You might have to do some wiring. If the output of the adapter is AC, the step-down transformer can go on either the mains side or the output side of the adapter. If the output of the adapter is DC, you would have to put the step-down on the mains side.

I would be a little careful here, though. It is likely that the monitor needs a regulated DC supply, in which case you have to buy something that supplies the required voltage and current. Usually, monitors that I have seen come with a brick power supply similar to what is used for laptops, and those generally provide a high-current, regulated, DC output.

what would be the best camera for making home movies?
Q. It should be from under $200 - $350 and it should have good lighting and sound quality. Any ideas?

A. While most cameras take video, and some camcorders take photos; to get the best of both, you need both. Have not seen a camera that compares with the video from a camcorder and camcorders can't take good quality photos. Suggest the least expensive Canon Camcorder and the Canon A590IS camera.

What gives a camera its picture quality?
It is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures. Megapixel resolution is about potential photo size, not picture quality.

In new cameras, look for a viewfinder (LCD invisible in bright sun), optical image stabilizer, and check battery prices. High mega pixel settings take longer to process and may not be needed unless required for very large pictures. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches. There is no one particular place to get great buys, but you may see something above that really helps you find the best buy. Click on the second link in the information above for an example then search for your camera of choice at the upper left. Camera prices at this link change often.

You may never need expanded wide angle or telephoto capabilities, but the A590 IS is compatible with Canon's accessory lens adapters: A small button next to the lens bezel is actually a latch; press it and you can remove the bezel ring, exposing a bayonet mount for accessory lenses. Canon offers the WC-DC52 0.7x wide-angle lens, the TC-DC52A telephoto lens, the 250D 52mm closeup lens separately, along with the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them on the camera. (Note that the wide, tele, and macro lenses all need the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them to the camera. The lenses won't work by themselves.)

This could be the best slim line camera with a viewfinder and ... It's PINK, but it uses a $49.50 Series G Rechargeable 960mAh lithium-ion battery.

CAUTION Do not overcharge! Batteries can be damaged. Use an automatic two or more hour Energizer Compact smart charger with temperature monitor, trickle charge technology, and safety timer ($9.76) at Walmart. Use pre-charged 2000mAh Duracell ($12.97) or RayOVac ($5.97) batteries (both hold charge one year) and a full cycle charge. To preserve battery charge, use the viewfinder.

CAUTION To prevent memory card corruption, keep batteries charged, format in camera, and don't delete or fill card completely. Wait for lights to stop flashing then turn camera off before removing memory. For card readers, double click Safely Remove Hardware. Select, then click Stop and OK.

Lots of great camera tips in this link.

My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7 x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.

Check with the Geeks in several stores and compare prices. Once you select a camera, read all about it in the owner's manual. You can view owners manuals at this link, but will need to Login. http://www.retrevo.com/s/digital+camera ...

The source links show most of the cameras out there with prices and make digital cameras work better with help on cleaning camera and battery electrical contacts.
