difference between tft lcd and just a regular lcd?

Q. What is the difference between a "TFT - LCD" And just a regular lcd???

im talking about monitors

A. TFT (thin-film transistor) is the "parent" type of monitor... and there are several different types of TFT monitors. So, in a sense, a "regular LCD" is simply a type of TFT monitor.

"The thin film transistor in a TFT LCD monitor consists of a thin film of a semiconductor material applied over a glass substrate. Each pixel in a TFT LCD monitor has its own transistor along with the liquid crystal material. The liquid crystal material exhibits properties of both a liquid, because of its ability to change quickly, and a crystal, because of its ability to remain in an arranged position. The transistor applies a voltage to the pixel, determining the color and intensity of the pixel. A pixel is short for picture element, and the tiny pixels blend together to create the image on a display." (See the www.wisegeek.com article below for even more details.)

The most common type of TFT LCD (and probably the one you are referring to as a "regular" LCD) is the twisted nematic (TN) display. TN displays are the most commonly used displays... they have high refresh rates but suffer from limited viewing angles and poor color reproduction. On a TN display, if you look at the image from severe angles you will notice a shift in the reproduction of color. While this does not affect most business or gaming users, it does present a problem to graphic artists who need faithful color reproduction across the entire screen.

For those who need accurate color reproduction, an in-plane switching (IPS) LCD would be used. IPS LCDs faithfully reproduce color but tend to have much lower refresh rates. Slow refresh rates are bad for fast moving images, so the IPS LCDs tend not to be favored by home users who may be more into gaming or watching videos on their computers.

There are other types of LCD displays out there, but the TFT type is by far the most common. Almost every LCD monitor you would see at a store is the TFT type... so in every sense the TFT LCD is a good, old "regular LCD". The TFT is generally dropped and we refer to them simply as LCDs.

What is the best monitor for a Graphic Artist? LCD, LED and CRT?
