Which one of these gaming monitors should I pick?

Q. I'm a gamer and I would prefer the BenQ 27" 3D LED XL2720T, but I'm not sure because I also watch entertainment om my screen too, and from the very few reviews there are for the XL2720T, they say the colours are washed out, a lot! And the ASUS VG278HE 3D LCD Monitor 27" is said to have a much greater life like image... So Help me out here, here are two comparisons from Komplett.no translated with Google Translate.

Better alternative for the Dell UltraSharp U2711 ?
Q. I'm a bit confused here. The Dell UltraSharp U2711 seems to score very well on tests, but it is getting a bit old. Now I find some test results that say it's no longer the hot shot it used to be. Is that true?
Can anyone recommend a BETTER screen of these specifications:

- 27"
- 2560 x 1440
- price under € 600 (or $ 800)

Thanks a lot in advance!

A. You could look into the Samsung LS27A850DS... it is new LCD "PLS" technology. I'm not seeing too many reviews out there, but the few that I have seen seem to love it.

Here is a link to the specs/price (Canada):
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=64747&vpn=LS27A850DS%2FZA&manufacture=Samsung

Here is a link to a glowing review, and a hands on experience:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4JlB01bkEk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezKQjtM8FdE

All I can say is I own a Dell 27" Ultrasharp and 3 Samsung Monitors... and the Dell is starting to have issues 3 years later... so I can only recommend Samsung based on my experience. I also like a 27" with 1920x1200... and don't want such hi-res as 2560x...

How to disassemble a lcd pc monitor to build a projector?

Q. Is there a risk of opening a lcd pc monitor? Are there any guides that explain how to open a lcd pc monitor for this pacific purpose?

A. There are certainly guides on this. It's a fun home project. Here's a step by step guide:

What would happen if a connect a higher res lcd monitor to a pc that only output 800x600 res?
Q. I can not change the video card on this kind of computer (Old computer system of a bowling alley that I'm trying to switch to lcds because the crts are becoming too expensive) Is it possible to do that? Will the lcd monitor get damage? Do I need some kind of adapter?

A. LOL, no. Each LCD has a native resolution, but you can certainly use lower resolutions..it will look weird though.

How do I get sound from my PS3 connected to my monitor with HDMI cable?

Q. I am hooking up the PS3 to a new LCD monitor using an HDMI cable. The monitor does not have built in speakers but I do have a pair hooked up to the computer. How can I get sound?

A. Go to settings and then display. Set the video to HDMI. Then got to audio setting and set the audio to the standard playstation plug. Now you will need a female RCA to headphone adapter. this is to go from the RCA of the PS3 plug to the sound input of the PC. Now on the PC your volume setting should have a LINE IN this is what controls the PS3 volume. This is the same exact way I have mine setup.

How can I know if DVI port on LCD monitor is HDCP-compliant?
Q. I'm planning to connect my ps3 to LCD monitor. I have DVI to HDMI cable. How can I know if DVI port in LCD monitor is HDCP compliant?

A. Google up the model name of your LCD monitor and read the specifications on the manufacturer's website.

Or, read your manual

What is the Windows PC monitor equivalent to Apple Mac monitor?

Q. What is the Windows PC monitor equivalent to the Apple Mac monitor?
I'm not talking about programs or software, I'm talking about the actual hardware monitor.

A. Hi Melissa, hope sincerely you are fine.

If you are not talking about software, then certainly you mean the LCD technology behind! The LCD Panel inside iMacs are manufactured by LG, they are made in China and only assembled in California by Apple. For example the 27" LCD in iMac have the following specs: LED-backlit glossy widescreen TFT active-matrix liquid crystal display with IPS technology,
Resolution: 2560 by 1440 pixels,
Typical brightness: 375 cd/m2,
It can be attached to a wall mount, articulating arm, or other VESA-compliant mounting solution using the optional VESA Mount Adapter Kit. Technically speaking, it is really hard to get an equivalent Monitor using this LCD technology in the market presently. I don't find any monitor competing with the Apple LCD technology.

As for the Apple Cinema Display 27" (i.e monitor only) the following can be noted:
27-inch (diagonal viewable image size) thin film transistor (TFT) active-matrix liquid crystal display with in-plane switching (IPS).

Supported resolutions: 2560 by 1440 pixels, 1920 by 1080 pixels, 1280 by 720 pixels
Colors (maximum): 16.7 million
Aspect ratio: 16:9
Viewing angle: 178° horizontal; 178° vertical
Brightness (typical): 375 cd/m2
Contrast ratio (typical): 1000:1
Response time (typical): 12 ms

To get the equivalent for this is really really hard although not impossible. According to my experience, I haven't seen another display equivalent to the Apple Cinema Display. That said, the Apple Cinema Display has it's disadvantages as well for eg it uses a Mini Display Port!

I know that i haven't answer your question by naming to you the exact equivalent monitor but I say that I haven't found anything matching the Apple Cinema Display yet. If you happen to get one that can match Apple's, please do let me know.

I hope that I have been of some help while sharing my experience to you Melissa. Wish you good luck. All the best.

What monitors should i use for my 3 monitor setup?
Q. I would like to have one 3d monitor in the center and 2 regular monitors on the sides. I prefer the 3d monitor to have 2 HDMI inputs of one HDMI and one dvi. i would also like all of the monitors to be 27 inches and have the same refresh rate.Preferably from the same brand but that is irrelevant. my budget is 900 at max. if you would be kind enough to leave links to your suggestions i would appreciate it very much. Thank you! have a nice day!:)
you mean bezel? and no i was asking for actuall sughestions

A. First one is only 3D monitor that size for under $300 that Google and Amazon list:

What is the best monitor, or monitor settings to stop eyestrain?

Q. I am suffering from eye strain. I work all day on the computer, and take regular breaks, but my eyes are suffering at the moment. I am using a monitor that is 17" diagonal flat screen. I have turned the brightness down and the contrast, which helps a little.
I'm wondering if I should use a newer larger monitor?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks it is a Dell monitor 17". I can't see the model anywhere, but there is a series of no. on the back:
CN OY441764180 589 2X9C thanks!

A. flatscreen lcd's are the best

the screen should be PIN sharp, with NO noticeable flickering
and there should be NO vagueness around character edges.
using a magnifying glass, you should be able to see individual pixels
that are Sharply defined. if not, then suspect that your settings are wrong
each monitor has a single IDEAL setting
this has varied over the years as design progress is made.

make certain you are using the IDEAL setting for this monitor.
we cant guess, each one is different but you could ask another question

note: almost all monitors have a menu button, or button combination
that shows the current screen settings and status check that and state that too.

the worst monitors are those that run at 60hz as this may tune itself in to
other lights in the room.modern low power light bulbs can have undesired effects
old filament lights are much better.
strip lights are a complete no no.

so you see the strain is caused by interacting with ambient lighting.

monitors that operate at 85hz often look the best.

most monitors have a system of 3 settings for colour strength, running between
cool and hot choosing a cooler scheme may help

Acer AL2216W 22 inch lcd monitor giving me eye strain?
Q. Acer AL2216W 22 inch lcd monitor giving me eye strain?
This monitor has been giving me killer eye strain for 2 years now, the burning sensation and painful spasms been the worst. Been experimenting like crazy. What are the ideal brightness/contrast to minimize eye strain? Right now it's at brightness 0 contrast 35 and it's more than 30 inches away.

A. Regardless of the brand, it isn't the monitors fault....it's your eyes.

If you already wear glasses, maybe you need a different correction for that distance. If you don't have glasses already...maybe you need some.

You are possibly just experiencing dry eyes also. Refreshing drops every couple of hours may help while on the computer.

There is no ideal brightness and contrast. It's adjustable because not everyone likes it the same way.

You should get an eye exam to help determine the problem. Hyperopia, astigmatism , dry eyes, could all be causes.

What is the best LCD monitor for my MacBook Pro?

Q. I have a MacBook Pro 13" and I am looking to purchase an external LCD HD monitor. I would like it to be 30". What is the best one that I can get while keeping the price under $400?

A. Presently, there is no such thing as a 30" monitor that costs under $400.

30-inch monitors are usually very high-resolution monitors that do 2560x1600, and those cost upwards of $1000.

Unless you want a 32-inch LCD HDTV, those might be had for $400, but their resolution is far lower, usually 1366x768. There are also LCD HDTVs that can do 1920x1080 (aka 1080p High Definition), but you would be hard-pressed to find one of those for under $400.

what do i look for when buying a widescreen monitor?
Q. Im looking at buying a widescreen monitor, and i want a good deal but i dont wanna sacrafice too much quality for a good price. when looking through them they show at least 3 main descriptive features, Resolution, Contrast Ratio, and # cd/m2 Brightness, how do these 3 affect the picture quality and what numbers are better to look for?

A. I'm going to assume you are going for a 22" or below monitor because if you're buying 24" monitor and up.....wow you must have a lot of money because those monitors cost $500 and up.

Anyway, a number of 1000:1 is a very good contrast ratio for under 22" monitors. Actually, 800:1 is good enough. There are some monitors that have 1600:1 ratio, but find out if this is a "fake" ratio or not
for resolution, multiply the two numbers. The bigger number means more pixels. More pixels is ALWAYS good :)
but a 1400x900 monitor on a 20" has more condensed pixels than a 1400x900 monitor on 22". This means your picture will be better but you'll have 2 inches less screen (the inches are measured from corner to corner)
300 cd/m2 is great. I actually took a look at some monitors at Best Buy yesterday (went to buy a laptop backpack for myself), all of the ones showcased had 300 cd/m2 and they looked good. If you buy any higher I guarantee you won't notice any difference.
don't forget delay. 5 milliseconds response time is good but if you can get lower (I've seen 2ms), that's even better

In my opinion, the most important details to look for are:
1.) Price. I've seen 19" LCD monitors go for as low as $130 at Best Buy and other stores. 22" for $180
2.) pixels (resolution). I intend on buying a 22" (1680 x 1050)
3.) cd/m and response time aren't really that important, you won't notice much if you compare these two. Go with the numbers I mentioned earlier (300cd/m2 and 5ms)
4.) brand (although it doesn't really matter that much....most companies re-sell other companies' monitors)

How do I connect my xbox 360 my computer so I can play xbox 360 on my monitor?

Q. I just got a Emachines destop today and its the EL 1210 series . It has an HDMI input on the back and I want to know how I can connect it to my xbox 360 so that I can play xbox 360 on my lcd monitor.

A. You should contact Xbox 360 to ask about connection issues. See http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/xbox360/contactus.aspx .

If you really want help regarding Xbox 360 from people on Yahoo! Answers, you may want to delete your question and repost it in the Consumer Electronics > Games & Gear > Xbox category.

PS3 connect to dvi in or to a vga output on a lcd monitor?
Q. Is there some sort of adapter that allows the PlayStation 3 to display on a lcd monitor which accepts either a VGA adapter or a DVI In cable?

Cause I presently have a Xbox 360 that is connected to it using the vga hd av adapter by Microsoft.

But I want my PS3 to connect to my lcd monitor if possible.

Thanks for the help.

A. Your best bet is a DVI-to-HDMI cable (DVI end into your monitor, HDMI end into your PS3). That's because HDMI uses the same digital video signal as DVI.

You will need to figure out some other way to get sound from your PS3 though, since a DVI-to-HDMI cable strips out the digital audio carried by HDMI.

Hope this helps.

Is this a backlight problem with this monitor?

Q. http://cgi.ebay.com/BENQ-FP567S-15-LCD-MONITOR-PROBLEM_W0QQitemZ280135673120QQihZ018QQcategoryZ3698QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I believe it is a backlight problem, but wanted to get some other opinions first...it will be used for a DIY projector and I will be using a different light source so a monitor with a bad backlight is perfect for me.
you have to read the description, it says

"This LCD monitor powers on and shows the screen, however, after a second or two it goes back off and I do not know what is wrong with it."

A. It doesn't look like a problem to me. It's probably the flash of the camera when the picture was taken

Whats the best recommended projector for the ps3?
Q. i am wanting to play my games big size but cheap as possible thankyou for any help

A. cheap and projector don't go together. If you want cheap get a TV or DIY

Projectors cost throughout their life and can be difficult to setup. You have to replace bulbs after a few thousand hours of viewing (hundreds of dollars).

If you want to build your own projector you can do so with a small lcd monitor/tv and an old overhead projector. http://www.audiovisualizers.com/madlab/lcd_proj.htm

Does Westinghouse have a firmware upgrade to convert its 1080p 42" LCD monitor from NTSC to PAL?

Q. I moved from the US to India and cant get it to work anymore.

And on that note, does PAL/NTSC matter in composite signals too?
The 220V conversion isn't an issue (atleast not for now)..

how would I change the signal board for the PAL tuner and Pal Processor. Where would I even be able to find the materials for this?

A. You need to buy some boards first...

You need the Signal board for the PAL tuner and Pal Processor.

Then you'll need to get the power supply for 220 V ac conversion...

Once you get that, you should be fine.

Do NOT get the boards for the model listed...you'll want the Indian version of the same model.. cross that over 1st. Then order the boards that fit.

What Monitor would be the great for Video Games?

Q. I was thinking ethier a 17'' or 19'' Monitor that is under 200 dollars.

A. Well, I'm going to keep your price and needs in mind for this one.

You want an LCD; their easier on the eyes, use less power, and use less space. You want to get one with good brightness (at least 300 cmd/m2) and a response time that is 8ms or less. Otherwise, you get "ghosting", which is blur from cheaper LCD's. You'll want one with DVI; it's much clearer than VGA. Make sure that your video card has it (white plug); otherwise, just use the VGA (blue).

My recommendation? It isn't $200, but it's close enough and the quality is worth it:

I love this camera. The controls are self-explanatory and easy to use (so is the manual). The picture quality is fantastic. I really like that it has a view finder, so that I have the option of turning off the (nice, big) LCD screen to save battery. Highly recommended.

Why do some people use 2 monitors?
Q. Why do some people use multiple monitos on desktops, and is there any advantage to them while playing pc games?

A. I think it just gives you a bigger view of everything.

A multiple monitor setup increases the net display area of a system and can be an inexpensive way of improving computer usage.[6] Resulting display area after upgrading to a multi-monitor configuration is limited by the size, resolution and number of monitors. The monitors used for multi-monitor can be different types (LCD or CRT) and sizes. The operating system manages the monitors' resolutions independently.

Video output on a computer is generated by a video graphics device, typically on a removable card but which may also be integrated into the motherboard as a discrete device or as part of the chipset logic. The output is interpreted and displayed by a variety of devices. Video outputs are generally connected to a monitor (of either the CRT or LCD type), however they are increasingly being connected to projection equipment or television sets. As a result of this trend, manufacturers have produced video cards which can connect to several types of display devices using the appropriate interface. A "Dual Head" configuration utilizes a video card that supports two discrete outputs. Users may also utilize two discrete video cards, and sometimes even an integrated motherboard video socket plus a second video card, though often the motherboard disables the integrated video when a discrete video card is used (a limitation that was common on older chipsets featuring integrated AGP graphics and an AGP upgrade slot).

Where can I find a generic driver for my new 19 inch LCD monitor?

Q. My old CRT monitor died, so i trotted down to Best Buy and bought an inexpensive 19 inch LCD monitor. When I got it home, I discovered that the drivers on the disc are only for Windows Vista, and my computer uses XP. I have also checked the company's website, no luck. I wouldn't care much, except I use this system for photo editing. All of the graphics are stretched to fit the wider screen. Any suggestions?

A. you dont need drivers for almost all monitors. the basic ones windows install work fine and there will be no difference

how good are the AOC lcd monitors?is this company good in monitors?
Q. i came to know that AOC provide cheapest lcd monitor in india.
i need 22" monitor in chandigarh.
is this company trustworthy?

A. Obviously I can't vouch for them if they are trustworthy or if they have good customer support. However I have heard about them for some time now even though I have never owned one myself. They seem pretty good from what seen in stores and magazines. I haven't heard anything bad about them.

It's all a matter of preference and brand name. If you don't care about brand names they should be just as good as most of the top names out there but without the high prices of the brand names. If you get a good deal on one I say go for it. Just look for the specs that is the most important. Most monitors should last for years if you take care of them.

Are these good gaming specs, is it a good price?

Q. First off I'd like to say everyone who 'nerds out' these questions while saying "You need to spend £1200" to get a gaming pc can go away since I know that is not true. Sorry for the rough start.

What will I use my PC for? Editing videos using sony vegas, dreamweaver, fireworks and photoshop. I will be using it for programming as well and most importantly gaming (Counter strike, Warrock, Call of duty, Starcraft, Civilisation, mincecraft, battlefield, homefront, rift and probably a few more).

This is copied and pasted by the way. I've already got a headset, I can get a mouse, keyboard, mouse mat and monitor somewhere else. Is this a good deal for £598? Where is better? Should it run my games smoothly (Not needed to be on top settings).

A. Realistically? Yeah pretty good and it can play all the games to a certain standard it'll probably perform well, if you can build your own pc with the same budget you can kill that one <.< 3x over LOL that being said you'd probably have to pirate windows 7 to cut costs but since that comes with the OS yeah it seems decent enough.

Thinking about a 2011 Infiniti FX35?
Q. We are shopping around for a mid-size SUV. Anyone drive this SUV before with any feedback? Major things we want out it is safety #1, and would like to know how it handles in rain/snow and how bad of a gas guzzler it is. Thanks!!!

A. :::: I POURED MY SOUL AND TIME INTO THIS SO READ!!!::

The guy above named "ToyotaSucks" is possibly one of the biggest idiots I have ever come across on yahooanswers, and trust me its tough to determine which one is the biggest idiot =) Clearly he has no logic nor knowledge of the Infiniti FX yet alone the Infiniti brand as a whole. For one I want to apologize on behalf of the yahooanswers for receiving such false information like the comment below. To correct him the 2011 FX35 is not a rebadged Nissan at all. The FX35 is purley infiniti inspired it rides on no platform from Nissan, and the fact he compared a Nissan Altima sedan to a Infiniti FX35 SUV is beyond me. The FX35 is a great luxury SUV, it competes with rivals in this segment which include the BMW X5, Lexus GX and Mercedes ML. Out of all its competitors its main rival is the BMW X5, both these manufactures are purley sports oriented brands which offer a blend of Luxury & Performance while Lexus and Mercedes target an audience more interested in the luxury factor rather then the performance department. The FX35 is very upscale crossover, in fact it was the first luxury crossover ever introduced in the world back in 2003, later on and now presently other brands have followed the same idea which gave birth to cars like the BMW X6 and the Acura ZDX. The FX is a coupe styled SUV hence the word "crossover". If its one thing you should know about Infiniti is that they are one of the most intuitive technological vehicles out in the market today, making it a very safe car. The FX35 has the worlds first Around view monitor which allows you to view the vehicle through the LCD screen from all four angles allowing you to park or reverse with ease, remember Nissan/Infiniti was the first company to invent and introduce the Rear View camera. The FX also has an "Intelligent Cruise Control" system, this allows the driver to maintain an appropriate distance from the car ahead. Using a combination of laser sensors, throttle and brake actuators and the vehicle’s braking system, a laser signal measures the distance to the car ahead, then automatically adjusts vehicle speed to maintain a pre-selected gap, the car will actually brake for you trying to maintain a safe distance from the car infront of you, the FX will even come to a complete stop by itself if the car infront of you has stopped aswell. Another cool feature is the "Lane Departure Prevention" system, a camera monitors the road ahead of the car, if it detects that you have strayed out of your lane, it activates a warning sound and light on your instrumental panel. Should you continue drifting the system will gently apply the brakes to the wheels on the opposite side to guide you back into your lane, the car will actually pilot itself into the original course intended. There are still a load of features, way to many to list!! The FX35 has a powerful 303 HP engine which is enough to keep you happy and entertained behind the wheel. Asthetically is terms of design the car is very Unique, it diffently stands out from the crowd and it never goes unnoticed. The FX35 has a very luxurious interior, not to mention the quality is very up to par with Infiniti's brand image. The stitching and design of the leather seats are more closley compared to that found in a Bentley GT contental opposed to your average BMW X5. The FX is a great value, it sells for a MSRP of $42,475 while its rivals are priced alot higher and are very underpowered without the same standards you get in the FX. The BMW X5 and Mercedes ML both start at $46,000 while the Lexus GX starts at $52,000. The FX despite being smaller compared to its rivals, it offers more standards for the money, better performance and most of all its very reliable. In terms of gas, you cant really expect a vehicle in this clas to recieve an MPG of a corolla, this is a Luxury sport performance crossover however its alot more economical on gas compared to some of its rivals, the FX35 has an MPG of 16 city 23 Highway. The Lexus GX gets an MPG of 15 city 20 highway however the BMW X5 does get better MPG compared to the FX at 18 city 25 highway. Out of all its rivals I would say the 2011 FX35 and BMW X5 are my favorite. Hope this helps. Happy Holidays!

What kind of adapter do I need to buy to hook up my video game consoles to my lcd monitor?

Q. I have acer 24" lcd monitor. No speaker port only a hdmi port. I want to connect my xbox(original), wii, ps2, gamecube, etc. to it. What type adapter do I need to purchase in order play all my consoles using the monitor.

A. It has an HDMI port?

None of the systems you listed have HDMI output.

So you may need to see if you can find a converter for the three-pronged "Composite" signal into HDMI. They aren't common.

My monitor turns on and off every 5 seconds. How do I fix this?
Q. It's a Samsung T240 LCD monitor. 24" in size. Never had this problem. Everything was fine. Been using for more than a year. No changes in hardware or anything but lately, the monitor turns itself on and off very quickly like a flash exactly every 5 seconds. How do I fix this? I'm using the DVI port. I've checked all cables and disconnected and reconnected them securely. Still having this problem.

A. I would try the monitor on a different machine.

what is the best brand of lcd monitors?

Q. what is the best brand of lcd monitors?considering the price and quality?im planing to buy one this holiday mainly for gaming purposes.

A. I think every brand of lcd monitors has its own prestige. It may depend on you, what specs would prefer. The best brands of monitor can be seen in Toshiba, Sony, Samsung, AOC, LG and many more. You may also check an online reseller and compare their features.

Is it possible for a LCD monitor to display black light?

Q. Can an LCD monitor create a black light effect the same as a black light bulb?

A. Yes and no.

It's basically very possible, as the lighting on a LCD screen is usually thanks to a few tiny cold-cathode fluorescent tubes. These tubes start out by generating "black light" inside the tube, then since most people want while light, the tube makers coat the tubes on the inside with a phosphor that emits while light when struck by UV light.

You can get uncoated CCFL tubes, and with a little careful work you could replace the tubes in your LCD display with the UV-emitting tubes.

But that would be kinda dumb, as the color selecting pixels will not do anything interesting withthe UV. Well, maybe the blue pixels will pass a little of the UV, but that's about it. Now if you were a bee and could see UV, you'd see an image of sorts on the screen. But I assume you're not and you can't do you wont.

Now thinking a bit more about your question, are you asking whether the LCD color pixels, instead of being little color filters backlit with white light, could they be color phosphors backlit with UV? Now that might actually work. Probably been thought of and patented though.

What's the best, safest way to mail a desktop computer and LCD monitor?

Q. I'm mailing my computer and monitor from KS to NY through the mail. What kind of shipping/materials would I need to secure a safe delivery?

A. Because of the financial value of the unit, you must insure it. Most package delivery services will not insure it unless the box meets their criteria and that can be very hard to satisfy. If you have the original manufacturer's shipping boxes you are probably ok, but if not you may find yourself in a situation where the carrier will not insure it. Usually the easiest way to get the carrier to accept and insure it is to have it packaged by a shipping company (e.g. UPS store or Fex Ex Kinko or similar).

Ground transportation is fine for this, and a lot cheaper than air.

Can a LCD withstand being outside covered throughout the year in Arizona's climate?

Q. Arizona has moderate temperature in the winters and extreme heat in the summer. I want to use my back yard patio more and I thought if I put a 32" LCD monitor on my concrete wall we would use our back yard more. I would cover the TV when not in use, and it would not get much direct sun light.

A. depends on how many you wish tobuy...after every humid episode or hot temps you'd better plan on buying a new one

hope this works.

what qualities should i look for when purchasing a digital camera?
Q. what is the easiest one to use, but also takes nice pictures? please be specific. thanks.

A. Great question, I needed to find this out myself!

Buying advice Digital cameras
From shooting to sharing, these photos leave film behind

Digital cameras give you extraordinary control over images. You can transfer them to your computer, then crop, adjust color and contrast, and add textures and other special effects. You can make prints at home on a color inkjet or snapshot printer, drop off the memory card at one of a growing number of photofinishers, use a self-service kiosk at your local drugstore to select, edit, and print pictures instantly, or upload images to an online photofinisher. Final results can be e-mailed, made into cards or T-shirts, or uploaded to a digital picture frame or photo-sharing Web site for storage, viewing, and sharing with others.

Like camcorders, digital cameras have LCD monitors for composing shots or viewing those already taken. Many digital cameras can also shoot video with sound. While some camcorders can shoot still photos, a typical camcorder’s resolution is no match for a good still camera’s.

WHAT'S AVAILABLE

The leading brands are Canon, Casio, Fujifilm, HP, Kodak, Nikon, Olympus, Samsung, and Sony. Other brands come from consumer-electronics, computer, and traditional camera companies.

It’s easier than ever to go to extremes with a digital camera. Small is bountiful, and big is also booming. The smallest cameras we tested recently, subcompacts, weigh 5 to 8 ounces and can fit in a pocket. Price: $185 to $450.

Too big to pocket, but small enough for most handbags and glove boxes are mainstream compacts. The ones we tested recently weigh 7 to 14 ounces. Price: $140 to $480.

More serious cameras have the versatility and power to capture fast action or create photographic art under the most demanding light conditions. Advanced compact cameras are typically larger and heavier than compacts, with versatile controls and long zoom lenses. Price: $280 to $850.

Super-zoom cameras are characterized by a very long zoom range--10x or greater. While traditionally larger and heavier than compacts, a few new models are designed to be smaller and lighter than older models. Price: $250 to $700.

SLRs (single-lens reflex), the largest and heaviest type, offer the most versatility and power, including interchangeable lenses. Price: $600 to $1,700 for consumer models; professional models can cost thousands.

HOW TO CHOOSE

The first step is to determine how you will use the camera most of the time. Consider these two questions:

How much flexibility to enlarge images do you need? If you mainly want to make 4x6 snapshots, a camera with 5- or 6-megapixel resolution should be fine. It will also make an 8x10 print of an entire image without alteration that won’t look much different than one from a 7- or 8-megapixel model. To enlarge the image more or enlarge only part of it, you’ll want a camera with a resolution of 6 megapixels or greater.

How much control do you want over exposure and composition? Cameras meant for automatic point-and-shoot photos, with a 3x zoom lens, will serve casual shooters as well as dedicated hobbyists much of the time. The full-featured cameras in the advanced compact and super-zoom categories offer capabilities that more-dedicated photographers will want to have. Two of the more important capabilities are an optical zoom range of 5x to 10x or more, which lets you bring distant outdoor subjects close and also lets you shoot candid portraits without getting right in your subject’s face, and a full complement of manual controls that let you determine the shutter speed and lens opening.

Once you’ve established the performance priorities that you need from a camera, you can narrow your choices further by considering these convenience factors:

Size and weight. The smallest, lightest models aren’t necessarily inexpensive 5-megapixel cameras. And the biggest and heaviest aren’t necessarily found at the high end. If possible, try cameras at the store before you buy. That way, you’ll know which one fits your hand best and which can be securely gripped. In our tests, we found that some of the smallest don’t leave much room even for small fingers.

Battery type and life. All digital cameras run on rechargeable batteries, either an expensive battery pack or a set of AAs. In our tests, neither type had a clear performance advantage. The best-performing cameras offer at least 250 shots on a charge, while the worst manage under 100. We think it’s more convenient to own a camera that accepts AA batteries. You can buy economical, rechargeable cells (plus a charger) and drop in a set of disposable lithium or alkaline batteries if the rechargeables run down in the middle of shooting.

Camera speed. With point-and-shoot cameras like the ones we tested, you must wait after each shot as the camera processes the image. Most models let you shoot an image every few seconds, but a few make you wait 5 seconds or more. They may frustrate you when you’re taking photos of a subject that is very active, such as a child or pet.

Your other cameras. If you own a film camera with interchangeable lenses, you can probably use the lenses on digital SLRs of the same brand. Some new Olympus digital SLRs require a special $100 adapter to use film lenses, but you’ll only be able to focus those lenses manually.

Can you get sound from a 360 to a computer moniter without built-in speakers with an HDMI cable?

Q. I have a BenQ V2400W LCD monitor and some sort of Logitech 5.1 surround system that works great with my monitor when playing computer games in 1080p, and it makes 360 games look great, too. I can deal with it for games like madden, but for Mass Effect, you just need sound. So, is there any way so I can the game on the computer monitor?

A. yes you can connect your logitech system to the audio autput or headphone output of the lcd monitor. But if the logitech system has seperate inputs for the front rear and center you won't be able to have 5.1 sound but just stereo.
OR you can connect 360 to your lcd hdmi input as you do usually and then the lcd audio output connect it to your computer's line in(but this depend on your computers sound hardware).

How do i get my stuff back from someone elses landlord?
Q. I let my brother borrow a lcd monitor a while back when he moved into his friends/coworkers house. A couple of months later they emptied the house out so everyone had to move out. My brother had no been keeping up in rent and they decided to keep MY monitor as collateral, to which he agreed. How do i go about getting back my monitor without getting in between their financial agreement?

A. The landlord really can't give you the monitor, How would he know who owns it? This is not his problem.

You need to deal with your brother, no one else can get involved with this.

What happens if I use a disinfecting wipe on my LCD monitor?

Q. I used a Lysol disinfecting wipe on both my LCD monitors while they were turned on (yeah...I know it was stupid) and now neither monitor will work.

To add to that, my G5 Power Mac, which was connected to the monitors at the time, seems to have frozen and won't respond to anything. I've tried unplugging it for 20 minutes and although when I plug it back up, the power indicator on the front is on, there is no other response.

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A. Lysol is mostly water with a little alcohol and ammonia

You may have zapped your Monitors, Graphics Card,Motherboard and/or Power Supply

You will need to test each thing in a good system
Or take it all to a shop and ask what's fried

Can I use old capacitors to repair LCD monitors?
Q. I am fixing an LCD monitor (needs new capacitors). In an old VCR/DVD player there are some with the exact same voltage and uF rating. Can I use them?

A. Don't use old electrolytic capacitors. They have a tendancy to dry out and go bad. If the old capcitors are not electrolytic, then they would probably be OK, but you might test them to see if they are still the rated capacitance.

Q. I have an LCD monitor and I wanted to know if it can damage or affect the SKIN around your eye in any way? Like for example can it cause premature eye wrinkles, or thin down the skin around it, or anything similar?

A. LCD monitors are the same light as a lightbulb...just a bit more intense and controlled to display images. Unless you're squinting and straining to read something on screen then you're fine.

What is the diff between a TFT-LCD and LCD monitors? Which is good for eyes in terms of long working?
Q. I wanna buy a 19" LCD monitor and currently weighing between HP and Samsung monitors. All HP monitors are called LCD monitors as per the package details as well as per their website, while all Samsung monitors are called TFT LCD Monitors. I am a bit confused, as I work a lot on PC, I would like to protect my eyes and health. Can someone help me with correct answer?

A. LCD monitors use Liquid Crystal Diodes.

TFT is an LCD monitor that uses Thin Film Transistor technology.

Other types are:
TN+Film - Twisted Nematic
IPS - In Plane Switching
MVA - Multi-Domain Vertical Alignment
PVA - Patterned Vertical Alignment
S-PVA - Super Patterned Vertical Alignment.

TFT is the most common today, and LCD is accepted as being TFT-LCD. Usually you only see a differentiation if it's one of the other technologies. The other types all have their advantages and disadvantages, but TFT is the cheapest to manufacture today.

For your eyes, you want an LCD. LCD's are on, and change when they change vs. a CRT which has a refresh rate. In a CRT, the phosphorus is charged and glows, but then dims very quickly. The refresh recharges it, but there is a dimming and brightening affect. The higher the refresh rate, the less noticable it is to you.

Within an LCD, if cost is no object, you want an IPS (better) or S-PVA (best). They will have the highest contrast ratios and brightest screens. Be prepared to pay, and pay well for this luxury though.

How can I detach my laptop's monitor?
Q. I'd like to detach the screen, then extend the connections it has to the CPU so that the laptop would essentially become a PC with a separate monitor. I plan on wall mounting the Touch Screen LCD, then running a wire/wires to the base of the laptop hidden away.

Any ideas? Has anyone tried such a thing?

A. Its WAY above your head. The mylar strip that sends signals to the monitor tears very easily. I suggest you forget the idea.

What are the most popular LCD computer monitor brands?

Q. Hello,

I'm in the market for a 24" widescreen LCD computer monitor and I'd like to know which brands are the most popular brands on the market?

A. Samsung is my personal choice. You also have dell, viewsonic, hp, asus, and LG. I think that covers about all of the most popular brands.

As I said, Samsung tends to put out high quality LCD screens. On top of that, they often have very good product warranties. The offer 36 month warranties on many LCD screens, which is pretty long considering.

In the LCD screen ratings I have read from PCworld magazine, it is usually Samsung that scores the highest, with HP close beind and then LG. I rarely hear anything good about viewsonic or dell.

How much can I get for a BenQ FP757 monitor?
Q. I have a BenQ FP757 17" VGA LCD monitor, and I wanted to know how much I could get for it. It works great, no scratches or anything, but since it's for a gaming PC, we wanted to get something bigger.

A. Depends on when you bought it, it's current price, the price of the current market fav.

- In the eyes of a bank, Computer parts depreciate @33% every year. So subtract this amount from your cost price

- If your monitor is still available at a reduced price, factor in the price drop. For ex: if there's a 10% price drop, subtract this amount from your cost-price too. If the monitor is not available in the market at all, the discount calculation becomes complicated since your monitor can face a 50% depreciation or some appreciation too.

- If a better model is available at the same price as your model, apply a 10-15% off.

Remember, how much value you can extract depends purely on your prospective buyer's willingness to pay. I know of someone who sold a 1 year monitor at profit simply because a technology lab wanted that specific model very badly.

Most people I know had to sell 1 year old goods at 50% of the buying price.

What type of computer systems do the photography industry use?

Q. Operating systems, software, hard drives, monitors, back up systems.

A. Any and all, we all have our preferences. Personally I prefer a PC, not one from the High Street or Ding Dong Dell which are made down to a price with poor hardware, but one put together by someone who knows what they are doing, then you'll get a machine that will knock the pants off any Mac offering for half the price.

With Mac's your limited to expensive hardware and software, innovative software is always written for the PC first, then, maybe a Mac version will come out. I was using Photomatix Pro (for HDR) for 5 years before a Mac version came out. If your interests are more specialised and you want to try stacking software for Astro or deep depth of field shots you have to use a PC at the moment.

There is a myth that the Mac OS is more stable than PC, and that's exactly what it is a myth, even with their tight controls of hardware and software they do 'freeze' and 'fall over' probably more than an equally well made PC running XP or Windows 7.

I do own two Macs and boy do they exasperate me, you have to go into 4 separate screens to set all the parameters for printing, with Windows drivers all the parameters are in one screen, they keep insisting on reverting back to the 'generic' drivers in the OS even though you have the up to date state of the art driver from the hardware manufacturer, it take a couple of hours for me to tell it different.

Monitors are probably the single most important component, I'm still using a 21" CRT monitor as it gives me a bright colour corrected image with higher resolution than you can get with LCD screens, up to now LED, LCD and even Plasma screens aren't as good - yet, but they are getting there.

What configuration computer require for a engineering student?
Q. My son will be get admission for B.Tech Information Technology. He has to study four years to complete the course and he may be continue his master studies. So,please suggest a best configuration computer that will suit upto certain years.

A. 64bit, 3GHz, Quad-core processor
4GB RAM
500-1000GB SATA 2 hard drive
512MB video card
Blue Ray/DVD/CD burner
20" LCD monitor
That will give him a good start! I would get a desktop rather than a laptop. You get much more for your money; easier to upgrade, and last longer. Keep in mind that the state-of-the-art computer system you get today, will be outdated, but still functional in 4 years. The conventional computers that everyone uses today will be replaced with a "super" cell phone in less than 10 years!
I would let your son pick out the computer.

Is it possible to hook up the original Xbox to a Media Center PC or LCD monitor and play Xbox games?

Q. I know that hooking up my Xbox via a Media Center Extender will allow me to swap pictures, music , and record TV and such. But what if I want to play my Xbox games? Will it show thru my monitor? If not, is there a way to hook up my Xbox to my LCD monitor? Will playing the Xbox damage the monitor?

A. Yes, assuming that your media center pc has tv inputs. I use regular old XP with an Aver TV card and have no problem using my xbox on it.

Hope this helps.

dell lcd monitor, appearing a colour strip on the screen?
Q. I own a Dell LCD monitor though it is working normally, a thread like something appear on the screen. It is pink in colour and sometime also with light green and yellow. Though all the other function is normal i would like to know the reason.

A. Most likely a bad electrical connection at the edge of the screen at that spot for that line of pixels, usually occurs after an impact of some kind, but can occur just because. Not much you can really do about it other than replace the screen or whole monitor.

What do you think?

A. >Excellent computer. Just realize now that with Home Premium edition, you are maxed out on the gigabytes of RAM you can have, even if you have more slots on the motherboard. Home Premium 64 bit can only access up to 8 gigs of RAM, that is the only condition I see you might want to consider. But other than that, looks zuper to me.

A. Hi there, with your gtx 570, you could play all games on maximum settings on 1080p resolution with good FPS.

If you're plaaning to have two gtx 570 in sli in the future then the 950w PSU is Okay but if you don't have plans on having another gtx 570 in sli then this is too much bec the power requirement of the gtx 570 is just 550w so a 700w would be more than enough.

DONT FORGET =P

A great aftermarket cooler (coolermaster brands are great)

Great gaming speakers

Gaming keyboard and mouse

AND your good to go, Enjoy your build, Merry Christmas =P

How much will it cost to replace the monitor on my Dell 1501 inspiron notebook.?
Q. I just recently broke the monitor on my Dell 1501 inspiron notebook. It is totally shot i cant see a thing. I tried the website but its not under warranty. I was wondering how much it will cost for me to replace and where i can send it besides dell. I just want to get a quick price.

A. Depends if you have the 14.1" or 15.4" LCD. You should be able to get a new 14.1 on eBay for around $150, a 15.4 for $185. Slightly more for the TrueLife screen. Installation at a computer/laptop repair shop shouldn't run more than $50-60.
