What are the pros and cons of LCD vs Plasma vs Rear projection?

Q. I also heard there is no noticable difference between 1080i vs 720p when your set less than 50"

A. LCD - This is the everyman HDTV. Its mass produced, cost effective, low on power consumption, and just what people "know." LCD monitors in computers make it a more familiar product for many. Its SD playback tends to be a bit sharp/crisp; think the evening news (this isn't good vs bad, this is personal taste). Its colors tend to be a bit more muted (again not good vs bad, just taste). LCDs have a matte finish for the viewing surface (the edge around it can be glossy though depending on model).

LCD's are inherently bad with motion playback. The suffer from motion blur (ghost trails). This is why you see "better" ones advertised with 120Hz or 240Hz refresh rates. The improved refresh rates are an attempt to overcome that inherent flaw.

LCD's will give you weaker blacks, colors, and contrasts on the whole. This is why you see the proliferation of the LED LCD. That technological step alleviates those LCD problems.

Plasma TVs inherently give you better blacks, colors, and contrast. They are also inherently strong in motion playback as their refresh rate is near instantaneous (like a CRT). Plasma colors tend to have more pop to them (not good vs bad, just taste). Plasma SD tends to be a bit softer (think Hollywood films); again not good vs bad, just personal taste.

Plasmas should be conditioned though. For the first 100-200 hours of operation you want to keep the contrast and brightness cranked way down. Then optimize and enjoy. This isn't necessary persay, but most "nerd" consumer groups will tell you to do it for paranoia sake.

Plasma TVs are a shiny finish though, so in rooms with light control problems that finish can create reflection problems. Plasma technology on the whole does use more power than LCD. But not all models are made equal, so one must do some homework. And worst case scenario, a "very bad" Plasma TV would likely only cost you $40 more per year in electricity bills (and again not all models are made equal).

Plasma myth (1) - They experience burn-in. This is inaccurate, those days are gone. Just condition the gasses and then use it as normal and you're fine. Also, the better sets have built-in features to prevent this (on top of the technology just generally being better now than say 5 years ago).

Plasma myth (2) - They have short life spans. This is another inaccuracy. Most are now rated in the 60,000-100,000 hours range. At 8 hours a day 365 days a year that would mean a life of 20-30 years. So do you think you'll still want/own the same TV in 15 years, let alone 30?

Plasma myth (3) - They won't work in high altitude because of problems for the gasses. This is again no longer an issue. Current Plasmas can be purchased and used in mile high Denver, and above, so you'll be fine where ever you are (unless you're living in the Himalayas).

720 vs 1080 - There is no set size on when it matters. Typically though its though that anything under 40" definitely doesn't show any of the advantages of 1080. 40" - 50" is the grey area where some argue it matters and others say maybe a bit or not so much. 50" and above you definitely want native 1920x1080 resolution for your TV, as the advantages will become noticeable.

Damn almost forgot... DLP Rear Projection. The image quality, on all levels, is fairly close to Plasma. It would be at par with it if it wasn't a dying technology. Mitsubishi is the last developer of the technology after Samsung recently announced they were giving up on it. So Plasma is just getting more R&D and advancements than DLP. That said though DLP is still a rock solid image.

Its often joked that DLP will be the last TV you ever own. That refers to the expectation that the TV will still work until its actually physically falling apart (decades). But the bulbs in it need to be constantly replaced. Depending on the bulb and your TV usage, it could last anywhere from 1 year to realistically 4 years. Replacing is something you can do on your own easily enough. A new bulb though costs $200-$250 or higher. Also, some sets have air filters that you should clean every month or two. So there is certainly an inconvenience factor in owning the sets.


How to choose gaming LCD/LED monitor?
Q. I am planning to get a new LCD or LED monitor for gaming. What should I look for when choosing a monitor for gaming. Can you also give me some recommendations please.

1- Buy a monitor with a 2ms response rate or less
2- Are you ever going to use nvidia 3d? If yes, buy a monitor with 120hz refresh rate.
3- Resolution. A good gaming resolution for the price is 1920x1080. Most games do not exceed this resolution.
4- Size. Monitors have different lengths, but can have the same resolution. This means the DPI changes, or more pixels per inch square.This really won't make much difference though.
5- Contrast ratio. Look for high contrast ratios.
6- Color. Get a monitor with a wide field of color.
7- LED back lit. This affects the brightness

2.) Dollar for dollar image quality of a LCD TV won't match a computer monitor.
(partially with help of the video card)
3.) Far more inputs. Can plug your blu-ray player and all your other devices.

6.) Better suited to mount on walls


When playing video games, do plasma HDTVs have noticeably less input lag and motion blur compared to LCD HDTVs?
Q. Currently on my LCD (1080p, 120hz) there is noticeable input lag from when I press a button and the action happening on screen.

Also, during fast paced action (namely rotating my view) the screen gets excessively blurry and I can't find objects that I'm looking for.

A. The screen doesn't have anything to do with lag. That would be your console. It is like a computer. The monitor does nothing but project the picture, and if the internet is not loading fast, that is the tower, not the screen.

Whats a difference between a 120hz LCD vs 120hz LED monitor?

Q. Can anyone shed some light? I'm stuck between buying the benq xl 2410 or asus vg236he. Only difference is asus is lcd and benqis led. Is it worth paying $400 for the led instead of the $328 lcd? What's the difference?

A. The only difference between an LCD and LED display is the backlight. In ordinary LCD displays, some sort of luminescent lamps are used, whereas LED displays use LED's (light-emitting diodes). The LED's consume less power (and therefore emit less heat), they also usually produce steadier light. The LED's also typically live longer than luminescent lamps.
Since LED displays consume less power and live longer, they are more economical in a long range. But given the price difference, it's unclear whether you'll get return on your investment any time soon (if at all).
Since the light characteristics differ quite a lot between different luminescent lamps and even more so between any of them and LED's, I'd suggest looking at the displays in question before buying them - just to make sure you like the colors.


What is the normal refresh rate for LCD monitor and browser scrolling itself?
Q. I have 2 refresh rates 60 and 75. I saw recommended is 75. Main problem of screen flickers is especially on mozilla and internet explorer. Even when I changed the mouse, the browsers scrolled up and down quickly and flicker. Why does this happen, how to solve?

A. LCD monitors use 60hz. 75 makes moving graphics on the screen a little more smooth (mainly only noticeable in games) but most LCD displays don't support over 60.

There are some higher-end displays that support 120hz, but they're pretty damn pricey!

A. No, the monitor has to be 3D ready, and you HAVE to have a supported Nvidia card so no, you cannot play 3D PS3 or any games that are 3D for that matter.

Those 3D-ready LCD monitors have DVI or HDMI ports that can receive a 120Hz video signal. Normal LCD monitors top out at 60Hz only-- They are BUILT that way and no software can ever change that.

Element, Viore, and Vizio are budget-level displays, but are usually a couple hundred dollars less than the others with the same exact specifications, just uglier on the bezel.

What is the difference between a plasma and LCD TV?

Q. What is the difference between a plasma and LCD TV? I see advertized on their website, a Vizio 42 inch plasma TV, for $650, including free shipping. Someone told me the reason why LCD is preferable to plasma, but I forgot what it was.

A. TV Size

TV size matters first and foremost. If you look through various consumer and guru guides you will see that its essentially a consensus that you need not worry about high end features unless you are going to break 40" and more so 50". The reason being is that you can not see the advantages of those features in smaller sets. But being that you're looking at 42", an advanced feature/option, like Plasma, makes sense.

LCDs inherently suffer problems with motion playback. They suffer from motion blur (ghost trails). This is compensated for with the 120Hz/240Hz refresh rates. This feature helps out a lot, but is not 100%. And you are expected to pay a price premium for this add-on.

CCFL LCDs have muted colors, grey blacks, and so-so contrast. This is compensated for with the modern LED LCD. The LED backlight provides a massive jump in quality in regard to those 3 things. It brings it to a near Plasma/CRT/DLP level.

But in smaller sets, LCDs are the go to choice. So for the time being they will certainly still fill an important need there. And there also offer a certain sense of familiarity for many, as LCD computer monitors have been the norm for so long now.

Plasmas are inherently near instantaneous in their refresh rate. They are flawless in motion playback. While you might see some tagged with 480Hz or 600Hz sub-field motion drives, this is not a refresh rate. Its more so marketing to trick consumers (because of LCD's refresh rates). But in reality the technology just works quite differently (its more like your old CRT/tube set).

Plasmas inherently deliver vivid color, true blacks, and deep contrast. They do this right out of the box. They are a better overall image. And so you get a better image and perfect motion playback without having to pay anything extra.

Plasmas were not always this good a choice though, they have improved greatly over the years. But because of those past problems they do currently suffer from many myths and misconceptions. The main ones being that they suffer from burn-in, they are more expensive, they have shorter life spans, and they are energy hogs.

Modern Plasmas do not suffer from burn-in. After they are conditioned, you would have to actually work hard to accomplish a burn-in. To condition a new set all you need to do is keep the brightness and contrast turned way down for the first 100-200 hours of use. After that optimize and enjoy.

Plasmas are not more expensive than LCD rivals anymore. Any especially with LCDs needing high end features like 120Hz and LED backlights to compete. Those features often make LCD far more expensive to buy.

Plasmas do not have shorter life spans. The reputable brands will deliver models that are rated to 60,000 - 100,000 hours. That basically means that in 10 years time, at 8 hours a day, 365 days a year, you would only really see at most about a 10% loss in brightness. So the set is likely well useable for beyond 10 years.

Current Plasma models are now energy star certified. This means no more being power hogs against LCDs. They can match LCDs in this regard. But every model is different. There are some LCDs that still perform better, and there are some LCDs that perform much worse. It changes ever year as new models come out.

Brands

Though for Plasma I would recommend looking at Panasonic or Samsung before Vizio. Look at Best Buy right now for some sales on 42" Plasma TVs from those better brands. Vizio doesn't really have the reputation of being an elite Plasma TV manufacturer.

The Samsung PN42B450B1D is on sale right now for only $680. The Panasonic TC-P42X1 is on sale for $700. That's two 42" Plasmas from top tier manufacturers, still within the same price range.
