Q. i have a samsung crt monitor and am planning to buy an lcd monitor ! how do i know if my system would be compatible with it ??? i have a intel d101ggc mobo [ integrated graphics ] .wat would be the price ?

A. If your connectors are the same you should have no issue. Not all LCD monitors or graphic cards support both DVI and VGA so you might need to get an adapter or just match your connectors.

Now your graphics card might not be able to optimally handle your LCD monitor but that's usually on the higher end LCD monitor. For instance, your graphics card may only be able to display 1024x768 while your LCD monitor may be able to handle much higher resolutions (this isn't a problem for lower end LCD monitors).

So worst case scenario is you pay for a premium LCD monitor but could have gotten away with a cheaper LCD monitor and get the same quality (but not be as future proof).

The difference in all the video chipsets out there is the difference in the level of graphics acceleration. Useful for gaming or if you do tasks that use a lot of graphics horsepower like 3D modeling.

If that is not a problem to you then get one at the price point you feel comfortable with. If you are going to run Vista more graphics memory is possibility more important than more acceleration.

Anyone can please give me some recommendation on a very good 30" lcd monitor. Price is not important as long as it worths it.

A. For Graphics work our Studio uses Apple's Cinema Displays. The dot pitch is .250mm on the 30" LCD which is really fine for a 30" display and the screen supports 14ms refresh which is good enough even if you're capturing or editing fast action video scenes. The maximum resolution supported by the screen is 2560X1600 so you'll need a video card to match. The downside to such high resolutions is that you may need to get prescription glasses because everything is so small. We use the GretagMacbeth Eye-one to colour calibrate our screens which is a big plus.

The thin border also gives your eye the impression that the screen is larger than it is. Having said that when you sit less than 3 feet away from a 30" screen it is big!

If you don't own a Mac you'll also need a MAC DVI to PC DVI convertor and you'll also need a graphics card that can support such high resolutions. The NVidia 7600GT, 7900 and 7950 cards all support up to 2560X1600 but the 7600GT only supports it on one of the two DVI connectors! The ATi graphics cards also support such a high resolution but I'd start with the X1800 range and go up from there. ATi deliver better overall quality picture for 2D surfaces than Nvidia but you'd need to read a few reviews and see them running side by side to know there was a difference!

How do i set the display settings on XP?

Q. PC had a few viruses do i put in the XP cd and formatted. Now, the display is all pixeled up, i can barely make out the desktop! In display settings, i can not move the settings slider and the color setting says minimum, 4 bit or something like that. PC is a dell, P4 1.8ghz, 1gb ram with a viewsonic lcd monitor. Graphics were fine before the format. Pliz help.

A. Try Safe Mode, and then from there, you can try and restore the Settings.
You are probably trying to run too high of a resolution and since the computer thinks you can see it properly, it won't change it.

A. If you plug a DVI, (Digital Visual Interface), cable into the DVI port of an LCD monitor, it will be digital. (And plug the other end of the DVI cable, into a DVI port on your computer. Only a dedicated graphics card, has this port!)

Why? Because computers normally put out a digital signal. The signal has to be converted to analog, for a VGA monitor, or a VGA connection on an LCD monitor. An LCD monitor is naturally digital.

3.To use a VGA monitor, you are slowing the signal down from your computer.

What source should I consult to find out why my computer does not function with my new LCD monitor?

Q. I have a Quicksilver G4 mac (using OSX 10.3.9) that has a Nvidia GeForce2 MX graphics card. I recently purchased a Samsung 204B LCD monitor It has both VGA and DVI inputs and offers the ability to rotate the screen from landscape to portrait mode.
I can use the DVI input and the rotate feature on my new macbook (intel 950 graphics card) (using OS X 10.4.3) but not on the older G4. Only the VGA input works.
Is this a graphics card issue? Can it be tweaked? Who should I ask? How can I tell if another card will support the features?

A. Try lowering your screen resolution to 640X480 (256 Color)

That should activate it to default detection mode.
It Usually happens when the Video card is set to a Non-Standard Refresh rate. Or Set to a resolution the LCD can't handle.

A. If the 3D pictures/games require the use of the old style 3D glasses with the colored type lenses, then Yes, you can use your current hardware. But if you're referring to the new 3D technology designed monitors/TVs, then No, you would need the actual hardware designed for that capability.
