How can I reduce computer-use related eye strain and still use a computer 6-8 hrs a day?

Q. I need to use the computer for my job, but my eye's get extremely strained after just an hour of use. I have a nice, 22" LCD monitor. Any ideas?? My refresh rate is locked at 60 Hz. Could that have anything to do with it?

A. Yeah 60Hz is a bit low my man... try being above 70, but the more rezolution the less refresh rate.

Here are other things that work great:

1. They make computer eye drops, really. The drops soothe the eye and keep it wet. Some eye strain is due to dryness.

2. Get your eyes checked. I had the same issue. Big screen - sore eyes... turned out my astigmatism had gotten worse so I had slight issues focusing up close.

3. If you wear specs, get the anti glare coating. That with new glasses really reduced my eyestrain.

When all else fails, drink whiskey.

Can LCD monitors damage the skin around your eyes?
Q. I have an LCD monitor and I wanted to know if it can damage or affect the SKIN around your eye in any way? Like for example can it cause premature eye wrinkles, or thin down the skin around it, or anything similar?

A. LCD monitors are the same light as a lightbulb...just a bit more intense and controlled to display images. Unless you're squinting and straining to read something on screen then you're fine.
