Nikon D40x LCD monitor...?

Q. I just bought a Nikon D40 camera, and I can't see anything in the monitor while I'm taking pictures. The camera works just fine, and I can see the pictures I took on the screen on playback mode, but while I take pictures, the screen is black. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but is that normal? If not, what can I do to fix it?

A. You are now using a real camera, not a point and shoot. You do not use the monitor to take photos. The camera cannot do that. You use the viewfinder. There are some DSLRs that now have "live view" in which you can see the image in the monitor to take the photo, but it is, in my opinion, a gimmick to cater to those who are used to point and shoots.

Holding a camera out and moving it around looking at a monitor is NO way to take photos, not with a point and shoot, and most definitely not with a DSLR.

WHAT... there is ANOTHER Steve P on here? I did not think YaHoo would allow two identical user names?

Is there some sort of Vari-Angle LCD monitor attachment that I can get for my DSLR camera?
Q. I have a DSLR Nikon D3100. The monitor does not flip out or up and down, and i was wondering if there is some type of Vari-Angle monitor attachment thing i could get for my camera, so I would be able to take pictures or film videos in front of the camera with me actually being able to see myself in the monitor.

A. On-camera monitors are common.
