Are colors printed as I see them in a CRT or a LCD monitor?

Q. I'm a graphic design student. I use a Samsung CRT monitor at home to design, but the school monitors are all LCD. The things I design at home look brighter at the school, the blacks turn to brown and the colors always change.
I wonder which one is more accurate for printing? Should I make my pictures darker to be printed like what I want?

A. CRT monitors are far superior in terms of color accuracy. They are all around better monitors, they don't have "ghosting" in games and work well at different resolutions where as LCDs only are good at their native resolution.

The downside is that you have a a chunk of technolgy that weighs quite a bit on your desk clogging up your desk. I've had CRTs that weigh well over 100lbs.

There are also higher quality IPS LCD screens that offer much better color than the ones most used. They are also much more money. It's likely your school does not have these so the color on the LCDs will be off from true color.

Some people also prefer LCDs because they are usually brighter and give a more "crisp" image, but ofcourse that really messes up dark contract colors if you're really into graphics.

Even most of the people I know who are really into graphic design and gaming have gone to LCD monitors just because you get such a big work area without much desk room. They are also tons cheaper since no one makes CRTs anymore.

Is There A Difference Between Analog and Digital Monitors ?
Q. I bought a flat panel analog monitor along with a new computer from Dell. I thought I was only going to use the computer to surf the net and word processing, but I actually got interested in games. Dell also sells a flat panel "UtraSharp" Digital Monitor. I've read mixed opinions. Some say there is no difference between analog and digital. So should I cough up some money for a digital monitor to enhance my game play. Is it worth the money?? Is the "UtraSharp" name misleading?

A. Digital monitors are superior to equivalent Analog Monitors. The first reason being color reproduction. Digital monitors don't suffer from the white washout that analog monitors tend to have. They also reproduce the actual colors properly and to a great accuracy then analog. But for gaming your real concern is with the pixel refresh rate of the monitor you are looking at. While LCD's have gotten a lot better, if your refresh rate is to slow you will see ghosting on your screen.

Ghosting is really annoying when you are playing fast games with a lot of motion. I would say any monitor in general that has a refresh of 9ms to 15ms is probably fine for gaming. Though I would check game site reviews of the monitor. I would also say look at www.newegg.com for a good selection of LCD's at a good price.

UltraSharp doesn't have to mean anything, it just has to be a bit better then their standard monitor. Just find a monitor with a good resolution 19" monitor should have atleast 1280x1024 native support. Hope this helps.
