How to tell the difference between best graphic card?

Q. i understand that 8600gt is lower than 8800gt card, but i'm confused on higher end cards like gt450,gt520. I'm about to purchase new pc and want a graphic card that run Battlefield 3 pretty well.

A. There are various ranking sites, and review sites, and also specifications of power usage. Each game has a minimum and recommended description of whether and how well it should play at a certain card level. Since performance is a combination of CPU, GPU, DRAM, and other factors in a computer like card bus and even screen/monitor/display/LCD, it is an approximation.
add this good one: http://www.graphicscardbenchmarks.com/

etc.
Adding: A card number is like a model number, and a higher number may not be a better card.

I am instered in building my own computer soon. Any tips, websites, guides you could that you know of?
Q. I am a moderate to advanced user. I have anywhere from 1500-3500 $ to spend and really want to customize a machine for gaming. Any tips or info on how to do this is greatly appreciated.

A. well it sounds like you got some good money as i could build a wicked machine for that with custom mods and all. what you should do and this is coming from a builder who has built hundreds if not more for customers friends and family for over adecade is do your research. get online and go to places like daves hardware.com and follow the latest reviews. these sites get hardware before anyone from the manufacturers to trial. then they can give good reviews about it or bad ones. this will lead you into what you want to spend your money on.

one of the most important things to consider when building a good machine is stability and performance. then compatibility with teh os and other software and hardware. and before you do all this you need to learn what it takes to put together a good machine. so you need to learn more about building one and how everything functions on at least a high level. then you will have a better understanding of what you want and what to put in the box.

now since you ahve the money you want to start with the box, the case as you can make it look like you want and you will want to get one with a good power supply or without and put the power in later when you buy it seperately.

then pick the best motherboard you can get and check the presell reviews on it ,and if you dont want to wait a little bit for their release then go on proven track records by reading alot of reviews and support sites on current boards. this will be the most important component you get. so make sure when you find something you like , read everything you can about it on every site your willing to spend time on. this way you make an educated purchase. and go for the board that can support the biggest processor available or coming out. this is for future plans and you might want to upgrade the cpu later and you wont be able to if the board is limited to this years capacity.
next would be to focus on the video card and again if you got the motherboard then you can wait to get eh best video card later. as the video card alone you can spend all your money!

so you want to balance it. lets go with 2500. so spend 300-500 on the board and cpu. then another 200+ on the memory where you dont want to slack either so go with crucial mushkin kingston corsair then maybe patriot pny super talent even, just to name some i would trust with crucial and kingston probably my most trusted. and then the case and power supply, well i wouldnt spend more than 150-200 on both and get one taht looks the way you like with lcd screen even and front ports and memory card reader.

so now were up to 900 so we look to the drives. well we want at least a terabyte drive or 2 so spend another 150 on 2 of them, and then another 150 on 2 good optical drives and this is high balling it as i can get reseller rates so im not sure what retail is but definitely at least go to newegg and tigerdirect and even 3btech.

so now 1200. or add another 100 and make sure you have bluray capability. so now 1300. and now do you want extras like a camera adaptor to run your security cams, and a capture card to hook all your video accessories to it, if so then lets add another 200 for good ones. and the network and sound will be built in but lets say you want to add the best sounds card maybe a new audigy or even better. add another 200+. ok so we are getting closer to the video card. and we have 1000 left.

well we musnt forget the software which is at least the OS. so windows 7 add 150. and do you want office well darn thats 500 or so ,last time i checked so maybe not, do you really need it. maybe but what about crysis and other new games to let this machine munch on. so will skip any other software but the OS.
any other features like mods such as lights drive bay components like lcd screen temp monitors etc. well hopefully you get most of that with the case. so we can spend 100 on modding it to your style.

ok now we are at the peripherals like the speakers monitor and input devices. well go cheap with them for now and keep it under 200 for all. not including printers scanners digital cameras etc. so for a good set of logitech surround we spend 150 on ebay, logitech wireless mouse and key we spend 50-80 and a decent webcam for now another 20 thats puts us at teh 200. and now the total is 2000.

hey we have enough for a 500 video card woohoo. this will get you a great video card or even 2 decent ones for sli. ok and this is a little higher but your new to buying these components so you might not always get teh best price unless you spend your time making good purchases and doing that research i told you about. and of course if you spend that other 1000 you can max out alot of this but keep it focused on that video card as this is a gaming machine that the xbox and ps3 would truly be envious of. something they just couldnt touch. thats is where you want to put the money for games. BOARD RAM CPU and VIDEO VIDEO VIDEO.

ok i had fun with this one but i hope it helps. and again toms hardware as i have been contributing and listening there for over a decade! good luck and do your research. dont forget ebay and check their feedback!!!
