Why should i get a new computer monitor when i get buy a new TV and use it as computer monitor?

Q. I have an old TV and an old computer. I waa looking at new computers today and almost bought an HP tower with LCD monitor. The latter was on sale for $90. Then i noticed that a new HD tv was on sale for $140. Why not get the new 19inch TV and also use it as my computer monitor? The only thing i use the computer for is buying and selling stocks. I watch stock prices in real time. Your opinion please.

A. I myself have a 32 inch tv as my monitor as well as a tv in my office. An HDTV as a monitor your display will be sharp and clear. All new units have a pc selection on your source or input options. Just plug the computer into the tv using a VGA cable..

Should I buy widescreen monitor if the optimal resolution on my current laptop is 1024x768?
Q. I'm using a ThinkPad T41p as my sole computer right now. Would like to get an LCD monitor...either 19" LCD regular (not widescreen) or 20-22" widescreen...trying to decide which to get.

Widescreen monitors seems to be the new standard. However, I'm limited by my laptop video card with optimal resolution is 1024x768. Should I purchase a widescreen monitor and just deal with the flattened stretched out text and images, or will my limited video card never be able to take advantage of the benefits of a widescreen monitor?

From usage perspective: I use Microsoft Office Powerpoint, Excel, Word, and surf the internet all day long. I watch online videos on YouTube. I do not play games, but watch occasional movie.

Thanks for your suggestions!

A. "Optimal Resolution" is a function of the LCD screen, not the video adapter. Go into your graphic settings and see what widescreen resolutions are available. Some common WS resolutions you will see are 1280X720, 1440x900, and 1680x1050 - the last two being the most common in full sized monitors. Setting your color depth to 16 bit will usually allow a wider range of resolution settings, BTW. If any of those resolutions are supported, pick a monitor that matches. You may get additional resolutions settings if you update your graphics driver to the latest version.
